Gautam Gambhir’s expected appointment as India’s head coach could provide a new lease of life to IPL champion skipper Shreyas Iyer’s international career during the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in July-August. Having led Kolkata Knight Riders successfully in the IPL, Iyer could also go for the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe starting July 5, but the more realistic chance of a comeback is the ODI series against Sri Lanka. Gambhir, who is the front-runner for India coach position, and Iyer forged a successful partnership during KKR’s victorious IPL campaign this year and the talented Mumbai right-hander, who has been a prolific 50-over batter, might finally have fortune favouring him after a few tumultuous months. Gambhir was the mentor of the franchise.

Iyer was dropped from BCCI’s central contracts, along with Ishan Kishan, after he hey fell out with the establishment for his apparent reluctance to play Ranji Trophy.

However, Iyer always maintained that his recurring lower back issue kept him out of the game even though he did play the Ranji Trophy final scoring 90-odd runs.

Currently, a lot of young hopefuls, who have performed in the IPL, are training at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for five T20Is against Zimbabwe set to be announced some time next week.

“Shreyas is currently not at NCA. Here mostly those players are there, who have performed in the IPL and will be in contention for Zimbabwe selection.

“Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, Harshit Rana, Nitish Reddy, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Yash Dayal are all at the camp. Some will go to Zimbabwe T20Is,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

“However, there is every possibility that Shreyas will travel for the three-match ODI series in Sri Lanka. The last ODI that India played was in South Africa and he scored a half-century (52). He had 500 plus runs (530) in World Cup and averages just around 50. Can you drop him?” he added.

It is understood that seniors like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, along with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, will now focus on ODIs and Tests for the remainder of the season with nine WTC Tests between September 2024 to January 2025.

The schedule includes two home games each against Bangladesh and New Zealand, five away against Australia and the marquee ODI Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

While there will be a lot of new players in T20Is including IPL stars, the likes of Rinku Singh, Shubman Gill, Avesh Khan, and Khaleel Ahmed are also expected to travel to Zimbabwe.

In case Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are not rested, they are expected to be the designated captain and vice-captain for the tour although both have been playing constantly since the start of the IPL.

When the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 started, Lucknow Super Giants’ Mayank Yadav was being hailed as the breakaway star of this edition. His speed generated awe as he regularly clocked over 150kmph. His case was almost same as Umran Malik, a couple of seasons back, who broke fast bowling record in the IPL. Umran Malik has been in the shadows in the IPL 2024. Mayank also did not look the same after an injury cut kept him out for considerable time.

In the midst of such youngsters, one bowler who made a brilliant comeback was Rajasthan Royals’ Sandeep Sharma. He went unsold in the auction and was inducted in the team as a replacement for injured Prasidh Krishna. But he did not let that deter him. He took a five-wicket haul against Mumbai Indians and has so far taken 13 wickets. His economy is 8.18.

Against SunRisers Hyderabad in the Qualifier 2 on Friday, Sharma returned with figures of 2/25 in four overs. He took the wickets of SRH top-scorer Heinrich Klaasen and opener Travis Head.

Sunil Gavaskar was effusive in his praise of Sandeep and also blasted those who get impressed by express-pace in Indian cricket.

“In India, we start salivating whenever anyone bowls over 145. We say he’s the next big thing. But bowlers need cleverness which Sandeep Sharma has. No one talks about it from the India aspect. He has been delivering consistently,” Sunil Gavaskar said on air.

Though Sandeep has consistently performed in the IPL for various franchises, he has never been given a consistent run in the national team.

On him being called under-rates, Sharma recently told Indian Express: “I don’t know. I have never thought about it. Kabhi kabhi lagta hai mujhe mera due nahi mila jo milna chahiaye tha (Sometimes I feel like I never got the credit I deserved). But it’s fine. I am not 23-24 anymore. By the end of this tournament, I will turn 31. Few things are just not in your hands.”

Mayank Yadav, after his recent injury concern, may be out of the rest of the IPL 2024, according to a report in the Cricbuzz. The journey  of Lucknow Super Giants pacer, who bowled a 156.6 kmph delivery in the IPL 2024, this year seems all but over after he sustained a suspected abdominal muscle “tear” during the game against Mumbai Indians, making it his second injury breakdown in past four weeks. Also, Chennai Super Kings pacer Deepak Chahar may no longer take part in the IPL 2024 due to an injury. “Deepak injury is not looking good. I will not say he is ruled out of the season but doubtful,” Kasi Viswanathan, the CEO of Chennai Super Kings, said about Chahar, who pulled his hamstring.

Chahar bowled only two deliveries before walking out the the game against Punjab Kings at the Chepauk.

Also, the report added that there is “serious doubt” over the participation of Mayank for LSG in this season.

Earlier, a PTI report claimed that Mayank Yadav ‘might just’ be ablr to play if LSG reach playoffs.

“Mayank has a tear but it is more likely a grade 1 tear. It will be cutting it fine but in case LSG qualifies for the play-offs, he might just be able to play the knock-out games. But it is like hoping against hope and right now he is doubtful for the remaining IPL games,” a BCCI source informed PTI on condition of anonymity.

Mayank, who burst into the scene with 155 click deliveries and back-to-back ‘Player of the Match’ awards at the start of the IPL, broke down in the third match and was ruled out for four weeks.

He made a comeback against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday after passing fitness tests but was forced back into the dugout after bowling 3.1 overs in which he gave away 31 runs.

Had Mayank been fit all this while, there was a possibility of him being a left-field selection in the T20 World Cup but right now, handling him with care is the primary job of the Indian cricket establishment.

Former Australia fast bowler Brett Lee feels Lucknow Super Giants did not manage Mayank Yadav‘s injury well, suggesting that the young tearaway pacer was brought back to IPL action prematurely after being sidelined due to abdominal soreness. The 21-year-old Mayank developed abdominal soreness during LSG’s match against Gujarat Titans on April 7. That was his third IPL game, and he impressed one and all with his express pace and two Man-of-the-Match awards.

He made a comeback in LSG’s win against Mumbai Indians in Lucknow on Tuesday but walked off the field without completing his fourth over after an injury scare.

LSG coach Justin Langer said the young pace sensation is feeling “sore in the same spot” that kept him out of action for almost three weeks, while captain KL Rahul that added Mayank had complained of slight pain in his sides.

Lee, one of the game’s most feared fast bowlers, laid the blame on the LSG top management and medical staff.

He said Mayank’s initial injury would have required four to six weeks to heal, much more than the time period the youngster spent at the sidelines before being brought back.

“A side strain or whatever they’re calling it, normally takes at least four to six weeks to even come right. We don’t know the depths of how big a strain it was but for somebody who is pushing the limits of his body by bowling 150 kmph, that’s not good management at all,” Lee said in a JioCinema release.

“His first game coming back and getting injured, has to directly be on the leadership and the medical staff of the Lucknow Super Giants.”

The 47-year-old Lee, who took 310 wickets from 76 Tests between 1999 and 2008, sympathised with Mayank, saying he should have got the right advice.

“The only person who has to pay this price is this poor young guy Mayank, who is just electric. Everyone in the IPL has loved seeing what he’s brought… You wish he got the right advice, so he doesn’t have to go through and absorb this.

“Now, it’s most probably going to mean that he’s going to miss out on the World Cup if there’s an injury that might come up.” At the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Tuesday, Mayank walked off the field after bowling the first ball of his fourth over having taken one wicket for 31 runs. He was returning to action after missing five games.

Mayank made a sensational start to the IPL by taking six wickets in his first two games before getting injured.

He was later seen engaging in a conversation with India and MI pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.

Former India batter Suresh Raina said Mayank must have got some valuable insight on how to manage injury.

“It was a fantastic gesture from Jasprit Bumrah to talk to the youngster. He has so much experience. When (Mayank) meets him, he will learn so much from Bumrah’s words about looking after an injury. It’s not easy to return from an injury and take wickets,” Raina said.

“Team doctor Vaibhav Daga has worked with the BCCI before and helped Bumrah return to fitness as well. When Mayank bowls more with the red ball and white ball, I want to see him in Test matches when we play in Australia, England, or New Zealand.

“We haven’t seen pace like this in India for a while. The tips Bumrah gives him now will one day be invaluable.”

Pace sensation Mayank Yadav’s participation in the remainder of the IPL round-robin stage seems doubtful after he sustained a suspected abdominal muscle “tear” during the game against Mumbai Indians, making it his second injury breakdown in past four weeks. However, there is a silver lining for the 21-year-old Delhi man as he is all set to be given a pace bowling contract by the BCCI alongside Umran Malik, Vidwath Kaverappa, Vyshak Vijaykumar, Yash Dayal and Akash Deep. The contract will place Mayank under the supervision of NCA’s Sports Science and Medical team, who will take charge of his injury management and fitness programme from his IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants.

“He will soon be handed a pace bowling contract and once he is in BCCI Pathways structure, his growth will be systematically monitored.

“The national selection committee and the Indian team management would like to gradually blood him and ensure that he can maintain peak fitness,” the BCCI source added.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain KL Rahul on Tuesday said that during the match the star pacer Mayank Yadav suffered a strain in his side after the first ball and he felt it would be best to “not risk him” for the next five balls as a precaution. The express speed bowler Mayank had another injury scare during the 2024 Indian Premier League when he left the field after bowling an incomplete fourth over against the Mumbai Indians. He ended his night after taking 1 for 31 in 3.1 overs.

Marcus Stoinis once again rescued a win as Lucknow Super Giants emerged triumphant with a four-wicket win against Mumbai Indians at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on Tuesday in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. LSG struggled in the opening and suffered a middle-order collapse, but Stoinis played an influential knock, which ensured that the hosts walked out victorious.

Following the match, Rahul stated that he felt it would be best to “not risk him” for the next five balls as a precaution when Mayank approached him following the first ball of his fourth over to express his discomfort in his side.

“I have not really spoken to him. He had slight pain in his side and after the first ball, he said that there was a bit of pain. Thought there was no need to risk it, he is still a young lad. It is not just the pace. In this game, he showed he has more skills than bowling 150-plus. The more he plays, the more he will learn when to bowl what. Right now, we have given him a free hand to just enjoy himself and bowl what he wants,” Rahul said in a post-match presentation.

“We still had batters in the middle. An experienced batter in Pooran and KP is seasoned as well. Was a bit dry. 165-170 would have made it a competitive game. It takes time to adjust to this wicket. Our bowlers did well and put pressure on them. Always happy when you get those two points. We need to gain momentum in the back end of the tournament and the momentum helps,” he added.

Having come on after the powerplay, Mayank began his day with a bang, hitting Nehal Wadhera in the helmet with his first delivery at 144.1kmh after taking off from a short distance.

Later in the over, he exceeded 150 kmh as well, but he bowled mostly between 140 and 147 kmh, pitching the majority of his deliveries in the short or short-of-good-length zone.

This marked LSG’s sixth win at home and helped them move to the third spot with 12 points in 10 matches.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) bowling coach Morne Morkel on Monday said that quick Mayank Yadav cleared fitness tests and is expected to return in a game against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Tuesday at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. The 21-year-old walked off the field after bowling just one over against Gujarat Titans earlier in the tournament. LSG’s Chief Executive Officer Vinod Bisht informed that the speedster had suffered “soreness in the lower abdominal area” and would have his workload controlled.

The world of cricket is eagerly waiting to witness his sheer speed that leaves the batters baffled.

Ahead of the clash against MI, LSG bowling coach Morkel said Mayank has passed the fitness test and the team is “excited to have him back in the squad.”

“Mayank Yadav is fit. He has passed all his fitness tests. We are excited to have him back in the squad and in the potential playing 12 tomorrow,” Morkel said in the pre-match press conference.

Ahead of LSG’s clash against Rajasthan Royals, Sriram provided a fitness update on the pacer and his possible return.

“He’s bowling today in the nets. So we’ll find out how he pulls up after today, he’s pretty close, so ya hopefully, fingers crossed,” Sriram said in the pre-match press conference.

Mayank set the IPL 2024 on fire with his fiery pace against Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). He took six wickets across both matches and was adjudged the ‘Player of the Match’ award in both games.

Mayank touched the speed of 150 kmph consistently and his control over line and length left many in awe.

Whenever he has been handed the ball, he has sent down thunderbolts, including one that clocked 156.7 kph against RCB, the fastest by far this IPL season and the fourth-fastest in the history of the tournament.

Nicholas Pooran has been one of the most consistent performers with the bat for LSG in IPL 2024. The explosive left-handed batter has accumulated 280 runs in eight matches at an average of 70 and a strike rate of 169.69. Pooran could be the game-changer for LSG against a quality RR bowling line-up.

Deepak Hooda

Deepak Hooda scored a match-winning cameo of 17 not out off just six balls to help LSG secure a memorable victory against CSK in Chennai. Batting at No.6, Hooda forged an incredible 55-run stand with Stoinis to power LSG to a brilliant win. He could once again play a key role against RR.

Ayush Badoni

Young Ayush Badoni has batted at different positions for LSG this season. The right-handed batter has scored 113 runs in eight games at a strike rate of 124.17. He will look to make another useful contribution on Saturday.

Krunal Pandya

Experienced Krunal Pandya is a key player for LSG with both bat and ball. The 33-year-old all-rounder has bagged five wickets and scored 58 runs in eight matches in IPL 2024. He could play a pivotal role with his all-round skills against an in-form Rajasthan outfit.

Matt Henry

RR Predicted XI

Yashasvi Jaiswal

RR’s flamboyant opener Yashasvi Jaiswal returned to form with a match-winning century against Mumbai Indians in their last game. Chasing 180, Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 104 off just 60 balls to guide RR to a nine-wicket win in Jaipur and the southpaw will look to continue his form against LSG.

Jos Buttler

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s opening partner Jos Buttler has also been in scintillating form this season. Buttler has scored 285 runs in seven games at an average of 57 and a strike rate of 146.90, including a magnificent ton against KKR and he will aim to produce another big knock in Lucknow.

Young Riyan Parag has been the leading run-scorer for RR this season so far. Batting at No.4, Parag has accumulated 318 runs in eight matches at an average of 63.60 and a strike rate of 161.42. He will once again hold the key in the middle-order for the Royals and will hope to keep his position as RR’s top-scorer this season.

Dhruv Jurel

India international Dhruv Jurel is another quality inclusion in RR’s playing XI. The Indian youngster has scored 50 runs in five innings in IPL 2024. With RR’s top-order firing, Jurel has had limited opportunities and will look to impress in Lucknow.

Shimron Hetmyer

West Indies’ explosive batter Shimron Hetmyer has been one of the top finishers in T20 cricket. Hetmyer has scored 70 runs in limited opportunities at an impressive strike rate of 194.44. He will look to contribute against LSG if any opportunity arises.

Rovman Powell

West Indies’ T20I captain Rovman Powell is a match-winner on his day. The 30-year-old has played three matches for the Royals this season and also chipped in with some handy contributions. He is expected to retain his place in RR’s playing XI against LSG.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Veteran cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin can contribute with both bat and ball in the T20 format. However, Ashwin has picked up just a solitary wicket and scored 53 runs in seven matches this season. Ashwin will aim to bounce back with an all-round performance in Lucknow.

Trent Boult

RR’s star pacer Trent Boult has provided early breakthroughs for the Royals in IPL 2024 so far. The left-arm fast bowler has scalped nine wickets in eight matches at an economy of 7.46 and could trouble the LSG batting line-up on Saturday.

Avesh Khan

India’s Avesh Khan has been a wicket-taker for RR this season. The right-arm pacer has claimed eight wickets in just as many games at an economy of 9.41. Avesh could be crucial in the middle overs against LSG.

Yuzvendra Chahal

Yuzvendra Chahal has been the joint-leading wicket-taker in IPL 2024. The star leg-spinner has already bagged 13 wickets in eight matches at an economy of 8.83. He could once again be the wrecker-in-chief for the Royals in Lucknow.

The Lucknow Super Giants assistant coach Sridharan Sriram was hopeful of speed sensation Mayank Yadav’s participation in the match against Rajasthan Royals at Ekana Cricket Stadium after the star bowler suffered a soreness in the lower abdominal area during the match against Gujarat Titans. “He is bowling today and looks fit, but we will have a final test ahead of the game tomorrow then only we will take a call on his participation against RR,” said Sridharan Sriram in the pre-match press conference on Friday.

“He is a terrific talent and from the place he comes, he knows very well what to do and what not to. The quality he has with his length is not inferior to others in this season’s IPL and with that pace, it is very hard to play shots against him, and that is what makes him special,” said Sriram.

Yadav has so far played three IPL matches and has claimed six wickets, three each against PBKS and RCB. In a match against Gujarat Titans at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, Yadav had to walk off the field after bowling just one over, where he was down on pace and was hit for three boundaries, conceding 13 runs overall.

Lucknow Super Giants will face Rajasthan Royals at the Ekana Stadium on Saturday.
