Australia have unveiled their jersey ahead of the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup this year, to be held from June 1 onwards in the West Indies and the USA. The official X (formerly Twitter) account of cricket.com.au revealed the jersey on Wednesday. This will be the first time that the Aussies will be wearing a green jersey in the 20-over format. “Going green! Australia’s #T20WorldCup kit is confirmed,” cricket.com.au on X. Australia T20 skipper Mitchell Marsh was among the players who wore the jersey in the photo shoot.

Earlier on Wednesday, Australia named their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar won a recall despite not having played a T20I since the last T20 World Cup on Australian soil in 2022, while all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Cameron Green also earned a place in the final squad despite some indifferent form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), as per the ICC. All-rounder Mitchell Marsh will captain the side.

Meanwhile, veteran batter Steve Smith, young batting sensation Jake Fraser-McGurk, experienced seamer Jason Behrendorff and all-rounder Matt Short all missed out.

Australia open their T20 World Cup campaign against Oman in Barbados on June 5, before Group B fixtures against England, Namibia and Scotland.

Australia squad: Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh (C), Josh Inglis, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, and Adam Zampa.

Australia wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade will miss Gujarat Titans’ (GT) first match of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, so that he could take part in the Sheffield Shield final for Tasmania, according to ESPNcricinfo. The Sheffield Shield final for Tasmania will take place from March 21st to 25th, and the Aussie cricketer will miss the Gujarat-based franchise’s first game against Mumbai Indians (MI) on March 25.

However, his presence in their second game of the IPL against Chennai Super Kings which will take place on March 27 “could be tight”, as per ESPNcricinfo. While GT’s third game of the tournament will take place on March 31 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

While speaking to the media, Tasmania head coach Jeff Vaughan confirmed that Wade has already spoken to GT and the IPL franchise has allowed him to take part in the Sheffield Shield final.

“He’s spoken with his IPL franchise and they’re happy to allow him to stay here, which probably equates to him potentially missing their first game. We feel very fortunate to have someone of Matt’s ilk coming back into our group, and his experience and his performances at the back end of our season,” Vaughan was quoted by ESPNcricinfo as saying.

After spending 10 years with Victoria, the 36-year-old cricketer returned to Tasmania during the 2017-18 season of the Sheffield Shield and was part of the side that lost the final match of the tournament to Queensland.

GT will head into the IPL 2024 without Hardik Pandya, who left the franchise after guiding the team to their maiden trophy in 2022. Pandya made his return to five-time champions Mumbai Indians and succeeded Rohit Sharma to become the captain of the franchise. Meanwhile, star opener Shubman Gill will lead the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024.

Australia’s Interim Captain Matthew Wade Unsure Of Featuring In T20I World Cup https://artifex.news/australias-interim-captain-matthew-wade-unsure-of-featuring-in-t20i-world-cup-4529124/ Mon, 30 Oct 2023 17:34:24 +0000 https://artifex.news/australias-interim-captain-matthew-wade-unsure-of-featuring-in-t20i-world-cup-4529124/ Read More “Australia’s Interim Captain Matthew Wade Unsure Of Featuring In T20I World Cup” »

Australia’s interim T20I captain Matthew Wade admitted that he is not 100 per cent sure of being the first-choice wicketkeeper for the upcoming T20I World Cup which is slated to begin on June 4, 2024. The recent rise of Josh Inglis and Alex Carrey has put Wade’s place in doubt in cricket’s shortest format for the Baggy Greens. After the conclusion of the ODI World Cup, Australia will face India in a five-match T20I series. Both wicketkeepers have been included in Australia’s squad for the series which is slated to be played from November 23 to December 3.

“We’ve got the T20 World Cup coming up, whether I’m the number one keeper there and play, whether that be that I go as a spare bat/keeper I’m not 100 per cent sure. I don’t know if the selectors and the coaches are 100% sure. But I want to be there. I want to play. If it ends up being that No.7 role as the wicketkeeper, I feel like I’ve probably nailed that spot down in the last few years for the Australian T20 side. So fingers crossed I get the nod in that but if I don’t I’m really comfortable going and playing my role,” Wade said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

Wade has been Aaron Finch’s long-time vice-captain having led Australia in seven T20I matches. He also led Australia from the front when Finch got injured during their final game of last year’s T20 World Cup against Afghanistan.

But his performances were not enough as he was not initially selected for the South Africa series as the selectors decided to give Inglis a few opportunities with the gloves. He did end up touring South Africa as an injury replacement for Glenn Maxwell but did not get a chance to play.

Even though Wade is unsure of his chances to feature in the World Cup, he asserted that he is not looking to strive for leadership and said, “I’ve never really strived so much for leadership,” he said. “I think you kind of look after your own backyard and those things kind of take care of themselves. With the relationships that I’ve got with [coach] Andrew McDonald and obviously [head selector] George Bailey and all the coaching staff around the Australian team and selectors, whatever situation I was going to be going over to India in it would have been in a senior role anyway.”

“So it’s just a bit of a cherry on top after a long career I suppose, to get another chance to go and captain in a country that is so much fun to play, it’s going to be a hell of a time,” Wade added.

It will be interesting to see whether Wade will get a chance to feature in the five-match T20I series against India.

Veteran wicket-keeper batter Matthew Wade received a shot in the arm after he was named as Australia captain for the five-match T20I series against India to be played just after the ongoing World Cup. The 35-year-old considered his international career all but over 12 months ago as he felt that last year’s T20 World Cup would be his last for Australia. But now he will lead a 15-member Australian squad that will be without its frontline fast bowlers.

Australia doesn’t have a permanent T20 skipper since Aaron Finch’s retirement earlier this year and Mitchell Marsh and Wade have been doing the interim job.

“Matthew has captained the team previously, is a leader in the group and we look forward to him taking the reins for this series,” Australia selection chief George Bailey said in a statement.

“Like Mitch Marsh in the South Africa series, this is another great opportunity to further deepen our international leadership experience and depth.” Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, along with allrounders Marsh and Cameron Green will return home after the ongoing showpiece in India but David Warner, Steve Smith and Travis Head will stay back for the T20 series.

Australia’s T20 squad for India series doesn’t have any uncapped player.

Matt Short, Spencer Johnson and Tanveer Sangha all have made their debuts against South Africa earlier this year and will feature in the T20 series in India.

T20 specialists like Tim David, Sean Abbott, Josh Inglis, Jason Behrendorff and Nathan Ellis all feature in the squad along side Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and leg-spinner Adam Zampa.

The frontline pace attack has been rested to manage their workload as the first Test between Australia and Pakistan will begin just 11 days after the final India-Australia T20I in Hyderabad on December 3.

Australia’s first Test against Pakistan will begin on December 14 in Perth.

The T20 series between India and Australia will start just four days after the conclusion of the World Cup.

The first match of the series will be played in Vishakhapatnam on November 23.

Australia’s star allrounder Glenn Maxwell is in a race against time as he continues to battle with a fresh injury with the ICC ODI World Cup just a month away. Maxwell ended up hurting his ankle during a training session in Durban while training for Australia’s T20I series against South Africa on Wednesday and he will now fly home to be alongside his wife as they await the birth of their first child according to the ICC. Maxwell is expected to recover from his ankle injury in due time, but, national selector Tony Dodemaide has made it clear that no risks would be taken with the 34-year-old given his injury history that includes the freak leg injury he picked up at a friend’s party late last year.

Yet, Dodemaide remains confident that Maxwell will be ready for Australia’s ODI series against India next month.

“We will monitor Glenn’s recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India in advance of the World Cup,” Dodemaide said as quoted by ICC.

Maxwell a quality all rounder has played 128 ODIs and scored 3490 runs at an average of 33.88 and a strike rate of 124.82. He has also taken 60 wickets with an economy rate of 5.56.

Maxwell’s injury has opened the door of return for Matthew Wade who has earned a call back in the T20I squad for the series against South Africa and could provide another wicket-keeping option alongside Josh Inglis.

Maxwell is not the only absentee from Australia’s T20I squad, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green and David Warner are on the sidelines as well.

Australia T20 squad to face South Africa: Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Matt Short, Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Turner, Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa.
