The face-off between Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head continues to remain the topic of discussion. A verbal exchange between Siraj and Head took place on Day 2 of the India vs Australia Adelaide Test. Siraj was hit for a six by Head but the Indian pacer bounced back and bowled out the batter on the very next ball. A fiery Siraj followed the wicket with an animated celebration and Head was clearly not happy with it. The Australian batter exchanged a few words with Siraj and that all ended on a poor note.

Interestingly, Head said after the day’s play that he jokingly said “well bowled” to Siraj after which the bowler gave such a reaction. While Siraj was asked about the same incident quoting Head, he said that the Australia batter was “lying” and had also abused him during that face-off.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar feels that the Australian fans will target Siraj and the pacer will have to face a lot of heat due to this.

“Siraj is going to get a bit of spit from the crowd wherever he goes from now because once the Australians identify somebody who is supposed to be the villain of the piece, then they will get stuck into him. For England, it has been Stuart Broad when he travels, there have been front-page articles encouraging the Australians to boo him when Broad didn’t walk when he edged the ball to slip,” Gavaskar told India Today.

“I think for the Australian side, Siraj is going to be the villain and he will have to face up to it. It will be important for the rest of the team to come to his side and tell him, ‘Listen. You go out and do your best’,” he added.

However, Head and Siraj made up when the latter came out for batting on the nex day of the incident during the Adelaide Test.

T20 World Cup 2024: Matthew Hayden Wants Virat Kohli To Open With Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma To Bat At… https://artifex.news/t20-world-cup-2024-matthew-hayden-wants-virat-kohli-to-open-with-yashasvi-jaiswal-rohit-sharma-to-bat-at-5640365/ Sun, 12 May 2024 03:28:15 +0000 https://artifex.news/t20-world-cup-2024-matthew-hayden-wants-virat-kohli-to-open-with-yashasvi-jaiswal-rohit-sharma-to-bat-at-5640365/ Read More “T20 World Cup 2024: Matthew Hayden Wants Virat Kohli To Open With Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma To Bat At…” »

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has already announced the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, starting June 1. The focus has now completely shifted to what could be India’s best playing XI out of the selected players for the event in UAE and West Indies. While Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Rohit Sharma have been India’s designated openers, Virat Kohli‘s sensational form batting at number 1 spot for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2024 must have given the team management a healthy headache.

Kohli is among the top-scorers in the ongoing IPL season with the help of sensational batting display. Such is Kohli’s form that Australia great Matthew Hayden wants him to open the innings for India in T20 World Cup by replacing Rohit Sharma. While speaking to Star Sports as quoted by News 18, Hayden opined that the duo of Kohli and Jaiswal should form India’s opening pair.

“If you have to make a change in that combination, I would be very happy if you would tell me if I could open with Kohli and Jaiswal, I would have said absolutely yes,” said Hayden.

For Rohit, who is the designated opener of the team, Hayden chose the number 4 spot instead.

“Then I would slot Suryakumar Yadav at 3 and Rohit at No.4. And that top four, in my opinion, is the right combination. The reason I say that is Virat is a master of the first six. And once the power hitting comes into play, there are other great options including Rohit. Look at his figures at No. 4, they are superb. Those are better than his opening numbers,” Hayden added.

India start their T20 World Cup campaign on June 5 with a match against Ireland. After this, the Rohit-led side will face arch-rivals Pakistan in a high-octane encounter on June 9. India will then take on USA on June 12 before facing Canada on June 15 for their last group stage match.

Virat Kohli can be the most dangerous if he gets to bat long and Chennai Super Kings will need to get him out early on a tricky Chepauk pitch during the IPL opener against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, said former Australia opener Matthew Hayden. Kohli will be returning to action at the IPL after a paternity break which saw him miss the five-Test series against England at home. The much-awaited T20 extravaganza will kick off with a clash between CSK and RCB at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai on Friday.

“His record is a 30 average at Chepauk stadium with a strike rate of 111. Someone like Virat, even the greatness of Virat has been reduced in terms of his overall performance at that venue,” Hayden told Star Sports.

“It is a tricky venue to bat on, especially as an opening batsman. It gets a weird tennis ball type bounce, it’s quite slow and difficult to play shots early, but the longer you bat, the game opens up and that’s where Virat can be at his most dangerous.

“It’s really tricky, so they’re going to need Virat Kohli out early inside the powerplay. They’ve done so thrice over the last 5 innings, and they’ll need to do so for the 4th time.” Hayden said Kohli can take the game away if he stays longer.

“If he is prepared to bat the 20 overs, he can put together a match-winning performance. 200 is very accessible at Chinnaswamy but not necessarily at Chepauk Stadium,” he said.

“A 150, 130 at times has been plenty of runs when you get guys as good as (Ravindra) Jadeja there who bowls stump to stump with the odd ball to turn and the odd ball that stays low.” Kohli, who last played against Afghanistan in the T20 series in January, has been in red-hot form, having scored 765 runs in the ODI World Cup last November to become the second-highest run scorer in the history of the tournament.

“Virat’s form is brilliant. I don’t remember the last time he’s played so well for so long. Yeah, he is a big player, but the last 2 years, he’s been amazing. In the World Cup, he became the player of the tournament and the hunger and desire to score runs make him a big player,” said former India batter Mohammed Kaif.

“We already know he’s a great player, but every innings, he wants to play a match-winning innings, make the team win whether it’s for India or RCB.

“This hunger has been self-made and now that he’s come back from a break, he’ll be fresh for the IPL and his form and strike rate, whether you look at it in the World Cup or IPL, he’s hitting fours and sixes whenever he feels like. So he knows how to up his strike rate and he’s doing it very well.” Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh feels the onus will be on batters to win games for RCB as their bowling looks a bit brittle.

“Chinnaswamy is a batting paradise, there’s no doubt about it. But you need to get people out to win games. With RCB, if you look at their side, they have always had batting. But the problem with RCB has been the bowling.

“The best thing you can do this season, if they are batting first, doesn’t matter, look to get 230, 240… they must target at least 220 or 230, because a 20-run margin can probably win them more number of games,” Harbhajan said.

“Not to forget, they have to rely on their bowlers to get the important wickets in the first six overs.”
