Marcus Stoinis was dismissed in a controversial manner© Twitter

The Australian camp was not happy with the third umpire’s decision to rule Marcus Stoinis out in the 134-run defeat to South Africa in the World Cup, with batter Marnus Labuschagne and coach Andrew McDonald saying they will seek clarity from the ICC. Stoinis was adjudged out caught behind in the 18th over off a Kagiso Rabada delivery after South Africa reviewed the decision. The Ultra edge showed a spike, as the ball touched Stoinis’ bottom hand. But what made things confusing was that Stoinis’ top hand left the bat and whether the top and bottom hand were both connected to the bat was debatable.

“You have got to accept the umpire’s decision in these moments. I’m sure there will be some sort of explanation coming from the ICC around the dismissal,” McDonald said after the game.

Labuschagne, who was batting at the non-striker’s end, said the team would seek an explanation from the apex body.

“We will get clarity or will seek clarity because it’s the World Cup,” Labuschagne said.

“The umpires really did not know what was going on. They saw what we saw so it wasn’t too much going on. For me it looked on the field… his hand was off the bat, it hit the glove and because it didn’t go to the side on angle Marcus and I were just asking have they checked.

“Because they just checked the spike from the front on. They didn’t get the close up, zoom in of the side, that we had and that just looked like there was clear daylight between the two gloves and handle.

“But once again I have been in the third umpire’s room and the screen is big, much clear than me watching from the middle in the pixelated screen.

“There was some talk that maybe it hit the handle of the bat. I don’t know.” Steve Smith was also ruled out after a South Africa review. The umpire was forced to change his decision as the ball tracking technology showed it was hitting the leg stump.

“It’s hard to contest technology. There was potential that it was going outside leg but technology had it hitting the stumps.

“Any time Smith and Stoinis are there there’s a chance. They are both quality players and given the opportunity, they would have taken the match closer,” added McDonald.

Marnus Labuschagne has been drafted into Australia’s Cricket World Cup squad with spinner Ashton Agar left out on Thursday after picking up a calf injury. Labuschagne comes into the squad in the one change to the provisional 15-man group announced by Australia earlier this month as Travis Head keeps his place despite being ruled out for the start of the tournament after breaking his hand. Five-time champions Australia will head to India with just one specialist spinner in Adam Zampa. Fellow leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha will stay with the squad until at least the end of the warm-up matches along with all-rounder Matt Short.

Labuschagne is rewarded following his rich vein of form in the recent ODI series against South Africa and India, averaging 60 across eight innings while scoring a century and two fifties.

He gives Australia extra batting cover in the absence of Head, whose left hand is expected to be in a cast for at least four more weeks.

“We have made the decision to carry Travis through the early stages with the aim of him being available around the mid-part of the tournament,” said chief selector George Bailey.

“He has been a really important player in this ODI team and we are hopeful his return can provide a positive impetus as it gets to the business end of the tournament.”

Agar played a key role in the first ODI against South Africa earlier this month but was ruled out of the next two matches with a calf injury before returning home for the birth of his child.

“This was a tough call but unfortunately, we couldn’t carry both Travis and Ashton into the tournament with the injuries they have,” said Bailey.

Australia, who last won the title in 2015, play hosts India in their opening game in Chennai on October 8.

Squad:Pat Cummins (C), Sean Abbott, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa

India’s designated number 4 Shreyas Iyer, whose fitness came under the scanner in the Asia Cup even though he was coming back from a long injury-lay off, has not been able to get time in the middle due to different reasons. While a back spasm ruled him out of the business end of Asia Cup, an avoidable run out on Friday ended his nervy 8-ball stay in the centre. The right-hander will be hoping for a bagful of runs in the coming two games which would make him and his team feel much better going into the global event.

Following his match-winning century against South Africa in the second ODI, Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne said that getting to ICC Cricket World Cup spot is not in his control and all he can do is enjoy his game and added that he felt he could have scored more. Australia sealed their place at the summit of the ICC Men’s ODI rankings by dethroning Pakistan following their dominant display against South Africa in the 2nd ODI of the three-match ODI series, beating them by 123 runs.

“Most of them are family. It is always nice, a bit of added pressure. It is nice to be scoring some runs in front of friends and family. I still think I left a few runs out there, thought I could have opened up and taken us to 430. But as the game does, it leaves you wanting more. You have got to be content. I was happy with how we got about it. We got to a great start with the bat and put pressure on them straight away. WC spot is one of those things that is not in my control at all. My thing is just enjoying playing cricket,” said the Australian batter in a post-match presentation.

“Like I said to Shamsi, ‘If I go home, I get to see my daughter; if I go to the World Cup, I will get to play a World Cup for Australia,’ so my job is to keep well,” added Labuschagne.

Since Labuschagne was denied a WC spot due to his lacklustre ODI performances since 2022, the batter has made a timely statement ever since he wore the yellow colours again as a concussion substitute for Cameron Green in the first ODI against Proteas.

With a gutsy 80* in 93 balls in a difficult situation in that match and now a century, Labuschagne has made his intentions clear, that he wants to be a serious white-ball player as well, whose spot in any big tournament should not be questioned.

He has won ‘Player of the Match’ awards in both matches and is the leading run-scorer in the series with 204 runs.

Labuschagne also brought up his 1,000 ODI runs. In 32 ODIs and 30 innings, he has scored 1,051 runs at an average of 37.53 and a SR of 86.85, with two centuries and seven fifties. This year in four innings, he has scored 247 ODI runs at an average of over 82.33, with one century and a fifty.

Coming to the match, South Africa opted to field first. Australia put on an opening partnership of 109 runs between Warner and Head (64 in 36 balls, with nine fours and three sixes).

Then knocks from Marnus Labuschagne (124 in 99 balls with 19 fours and one six) and Josh Inglis (50 in 37 balls with seven fours and a six) helped Australia reach 392/8 in 50 overs, which is their third-highest ODI total, with the second-best score being 417/6 against Afghanistan (2015) and 434/4 against South Africa (2006) being their best score.

Tabraiz Shamsi (4/61) was the pick of the bowlers for SA. Kagiso Rabada took two wickets while Marco Jansen, Andile Phehlukwayo took a wicket each.

In the chase of 393, SA got off to a promising start with Quinton de Kock (45 in 30 balls with six fours and two sixes) and skipper Temba Bavuma (46 in 40 balls with four boundaries and three sixes) stitching an 81-run opening stand.

After that SA sunk to 119/4. Then a 58-run partnership between Heinrich Klaasen (49 in 36 balls with three fours and three sixes) and David Miller (49 in 52 balls with six fours) and 64-run stand between Miller and Marco Jansen (23) took SA near 250 runs, but they could not provide enough fight and bundled out for 269 in 41.5 overs.

Adam Zampa (4/48) was the pick of the bowlers for Australia. Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis and Aaron Hardie got two wickets each.

David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne hit centuries and set up a convincing 123-run win for Australia in the second one-day international against South Africa at the Mangaung Oval on Saturday. Warner made 106 and Labuschagne 124 in an Australian total of 392 for eight after the tourists were sent in. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa took four for 48 as South Africa were bowled out for 269 in the 42nd over. Quinton de Kock (45) and skipper Temba Bavuma (46) put on 81 in nine overs to get South Africa off to a quick start before De Kock was caught and bowled by Nathan Ellis. Zampa struck twice in successive overs to dismiss Bavuma and Aiden Markram and South Africa were unable to mount a serious challenge, although Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller both made 49.

“Our intent and execution tonight was as good as it gets,” said Australian captain Mitchell Marsh.

Warner and Travis Head dominated South Africa’s fast bowlers during an opening partnership of 109 off 72 balls, with Head thrashing 64 off 36 balls with nine fours and three sixes.

There was a brief respite for South Africa when left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi dismissed Head and  Marsh off successive deliveries.

But Labuschagne followed up his match-winning 80 not out in the first match at the same venue on Thursday –- when he came into the team as a concussion substitute for Cameron Green -– with another player of the match performance.

Warner and Labuschagne put on 151 for the third wicket off 124 balls, with Warner going to his 20th one-day international century off 85 deliveries.

Labuschagne was even quicker, reaching his second one-day international century off 80 balls.

Both his hundreds have been made in the country of his birth. He hit 108 in Potchefstroom in March 2020.

“The boys at the top got us off to a lightning start and put pressure on the bowlers,” said Labuschagne, who said the fact that he had not been selected for the World Cup was “not in my control – I am concentrating on enjoying my cricket and playing as well as I can.”

It was Australia’s third-highest total in the 50-overs format and the fourth-highest conceded by South Africa.

“They were on top of us from ball one,” admitted Bavuma.

All-rounder Cameron Green will miss a substantial part of Australia’s Cricket World Cup build-up after being struck on the head by a ball from Kagiso Rabada during the first one-day international against South Africa on Thursday.

An Australia team spokesperson confirmed on Friday that Green will undergo an eight-day concussion protocol during which he will be monitored by the team’s medical staff.

He is unlikely to be available until the fifth and final match in Johannesburg on September 17.

It adds to a list of injury concerns for Australia with the World Cup starting in India on October 5, less than a month away.

It also provides an opportunity for Marnus Labuschagne to press his claims for a call-up if a vacancy opens up in the World Cup squad.

Labuschagne was man of the match on Thursday after batting as a concussion substitute for Green. He made 80 not out to steer Australia to an unlikely three-wicket win.

He went out to bat with Australia 72 for five, which then became 113 for seven chasing South Africa’s 222 all out on a tricky pitch.

Injuries meant that only 11 of Australia’s World Cup squad of 15 travelled to South Africa. Green’s injury reduced that number to ten, which means Labuschagne has a good chance of playing in at least the next three matches, starting with the second game in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Australian captain Pat Cummins is recovering from a wrist injury. Other World Cup players missing the South African tour because of injuries of varying degrees of seriousness are Glenn Maxwell (ankle), Mitchell Starc (groin) and Steve Smith (wrist).

Australia still have a three-match one-day series in India ahead of the World Cup in which injured players can prove their fitness.

Labuschagne was not due to tour South Africa, having been dropped after a sequence of poor form in one-day games. He was added to the squad when Smith withdrew. After his match-winning performance on Thursday he played down his chances of getting to the World Cup.

“I wasn’t too shocked when I was dropped. But I did say (to the selectors) that I still want to be that person batting for you in the middle order. You’ve just got to sit tight and wait for that opportunity and when the opportunity comes you’ve got to be ready.”

Concussion substitute Marnus Labuschagne played a match-winning innings for Australia to trump an unbeaten century by South African captain Temba Bavuma in the first one-day international at the Mangaung Oval on Thursday. Bavuma carried his bat for an unbeaten 114 to enable South Africa to score 222 all out. It seemed more than enough as Australia, batting with ultra-aggressive intent, crashed to 113 for seven in the 17th over. But Labuschagne, batting at number eight after replacing Cameron Green, restored calmness to the Australian innings, making 80 not out.

He shared an unbeaten eighth-wicket stand of 112 with Ashton Agar, who made 48 not out.

Green was ruled out after being struck on the left earpiece of his helmet by the second ball he faced from Kagiso Rabada before he had scored.

“Some weird things happen around concussions,” said man of the match Labuschagne at the after-match presentation.

His Test career was ignited when he replaced Steve Smith during a Test at Lord’s in 2019.

Labuschagne was not selected in Australia’s World Cup squad and only joined the squad in South Africa after Steve Smith withdrew with a wrist injury.

He said he had taken only a short break after this year’s Ashes series in England before getting back to work.

“I knew I needed to improve my one-day game,” he said.

Bavuma batted throughout the South African innings while his teammates crumbled against accurate bowling on a slow, dry pitch with uneven bounce.

Bavuma was dropped on two when Agar put down a diving chance at backward point off Sean Abbott.

He survived again on 88, with last man Lungi Ngidi at the wicket, when he top-edged a slog against leg-spinner Adam Zampa and wicketkeeper Alex Carey spilled a straightforward chance.

Two overs later, Bavuma hit Zampa for six and four to raise his fifth one-day international century.

He finished with 14 fours and a six off 142 balls despite struggling with cramp towards the end of the innings.

He watched the Australian innings from the team balcony.

“We weren’t at our best with the ball,” said Bavuma.

“Marnus took the opportunities he got early on and stabilised the innings.”
