Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty ended flat on Tuesday (July 28, 2026) as investors’ sentiment turned cautious ahead of key global central bank policy meetings this week and heavy sell-off across Asian markets.

The 30-share BSE Sensex dipped 69.86 points, or 0.09%, to settle at 76,765.92. During the day, it hit a high of 76,988.48 and a low of 76,672.77, gyrating 315.71 points. The 50-share NSE Nifty slipped 10.60 points, or 0.04%, to end at 23,985.35.

From the Sensex pack, Hindustan Unilever tanked 6.97% after the FMCG major reported a 3.17% year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit to ₹2,680 crore for the June quarter, mainly on account of exceptional items and higher taxes.

Bharat Electronics, NTPC, ICICI Bank, Power Grid, and Reliance Industries were also among the laggards. Tata Consultancy Services, Eternal, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, and Titan were among the major gainers. “The respite in crude oil prices provided relief to markets by easing concerns over inflation and input cost pressures. However, investor sentiment remained cautious ahead of key central bank policy meetings this week, including those of the Fed, BoE (Bank of England), and BoJ (Bank of Japan),” Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, dropped 2.82% to $85.87 per barrel. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹1,688.23 crore on Monday (July 27, 2026), according to exchange data.

In Asian markets, South Korea’s KOSPI tanked 10.84%. Japan’s Nikkei 225 index and Shanghai’s SSE Composite index also ended lower. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index settled marginally higher. “Indian equity markets ended largely flat as a broad selloff across Asian markets weighed on investor sentiment,” R. Ponmudi, CEO of Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth tech firm, said.

Markets in Europe were trading in positive territory. U.S. markets ended on a mixed note. On Monday (July 27, 2026), the Sensex jumped 776.01 points, or 1.02%, to settle at 76,835.78. The Nifty surged 228.50 points, or 0.96%, to end at 23,995.95.

Stock markets snapped the five-day losing streak on Monday (July 27, 2026), with the benchmark Sensex jumping by 776 points following a sharp decline in crude oil prices amid easing tensions in West Asia.

The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 776.01 points, or 1.02%, to settle at 76,835.78. During the day, it soared 841.74 points, or 1.10%, to 76,901.51. The 50-share NSE Nifty surged 228.50 points, or 0.96%, to end at 23,995.95, ending its five-day losing trend.

Among Sensex firms, Eternal jumped the most by 5.70%. InterGlobe Aviation, Infosys, Bajaj Finance, Asian Paints and Mahindra & Mahindra were also among the gainers. HDFC Bank, Power Grid and Axis Bank were the laggards. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, tanked 9.40% to $87.64 per barrel.

“A pause in strikes in West Asia has eased concerns over rising import costs and inflation, triggering a relief rally in markets. The sharp correction in crude oil prices, along with a decline in long-term bond yields, has also raised hopes of a durable resolution, supported by signs of long unwinding,” Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited, said.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹3,892.77 crore on Friday (July 24, 2026), according to exchange data. “After five consecutive sessions of losses, the Indian stock market closed on a positive note, supported by broad-based buying and improving global sentiment. Investor confidence strengthened as easing Iran-U.S. tensions pushed crude oil prices lower, reducing inflation concerns for India,” Gaurav Garg, Analyst, Lemonn Markets Desk, said.

The BSE SmallCap Select index jumped 1.71% and the MidCap Select index climbed 1.65%. Mid-Small Private Banks’ Quality Tilt jumped the most by 2.36%, followed by IT (2.30%), Realty (2.25%), Focused IT (2.09%), Services (2%), Auto (1.53%) and Hospitals (1.43%). Telecommunication emerged as the only laggard. A total of 2,776 stocks advanced, while 1,580 declined and 202 remained unchanged on the BSE.

“Investor sentiment improved after crude oil prices declined sharply following reports of a temporary easing in geopolitical tensions in the Middle East (West Asia). The positive undertone was further supported by encouraging quarterly earnings from select companies across sectors, while renewed buying in IT stocks added momentum to the recovery,” Ajit Mishra, Religare Broking Limited, said.

In the last five trading days, the BSE benchmark tanked 2,091.68 points, or 2.67%, and the Nifty declined 566.85 points, or 2.32%. In Asian markets, South Korea’s KOSPI, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index, Shanghai’s SSE Composite index and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index ended higher. Markets in Europe were trading higher. U.S. markets ended mostly higher.

On Friday (July 24, 2026), the Sensex declined 331.62 points, or 0.43%, to settle at 76,059.77. The Nifty dipped 102.15 points, or 0.43%, to end at 23,767.45.

Benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty settled at record high levels in their third straight day of gains on Tuesday following buying in FMCG, telecom and select IT shares and FII inflows.

The 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 51.69 points or 0.06% to settle at a new lifetime high of 80,716.55. During the day, it advanced 233.44 points or 0.28% to hit a fresh record high of 80,898.30.

Sensex and Nifty have been on a record-breaking run since Friday as foreign investors have turned buyers in the Indian equities ahead of the presentation of the Union budget for 2024-25. Encouraging quarterly results by blue-chips have also supported the rally despite high valuation concerns, according to analysts.

Among Sensex shares, Hindustan Unilever, Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Mahindra & Mahindra, ICICI Bank, ITC and Asian Paints were the biggest winners.

On the other hand, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Reliance Industries, NTPC, UltraTech Cement and Power Grid were among the laggards.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought equities worth ₹2,684.78 crore on Monday, according to exchange data.

In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo and Shanghai settled higher, while Hong Kong ended lower amid dovish comments from the US Fed Chair Jerome Powell bolstering hopes of a rate cut by September.

European markets were trading lower. U.S. markets ended in positive territory on Monday.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.80% to $84.13 a barrel.

On Monday, the BSE benchmark climbed 145.52 points or 0.18% to settle at a new record high of 80,664.86. The NSE Nifty rallied 84.55 points or 0.35% to settle at an all-time closing high of 24,586.70.

Markets will remain closed on Wednesday for Muharram.
