Former England batter Marcus Trescothick, who will be serving as Three Lions’ interim head coach for the white-ball series against Australia at home next month, said that he has not decided if he wants to be considered for this role as a long-term option.

Trescothick is currently one of the team’s assistant coaches and is working with the Test team during the ongoing Sri Lanka series. He will leave the squad during the third Test at The Oval to be with the white-ball squads for the series starting from September 11 onwards.

The recent departure of Mott as England’s white-ball coach after failures to defend both white-ball ICC titles has left a vacancy in one of the most highly-sought roles in world cricket and a host of former players and leading coaches have already had their names linked to the job by cricket media.

“It is not something I had ever thought about before until I got this opportunity now. I am not necessarily thinking any further ahead than the end of the Australia series. I have been very much focused on the job we are doing here [with the Test team],” he said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

“You plan your winter: we are off to Pakistan, then New Zealand. I am so ingrained in that at the moment, I have not really sat down and said, ‘right, this is where I will try to go, this is what I will try to do’. I am looking forward to the opportunity, for sure. I am really excited about doing the job. We will work it out a little bit more from there,” he added.

Having never worked as a head coach, the former English left-hander had expressed interest in the role. He was Somerset’s assistant coach for a year and a half after his retirement in 2019 and has been a part of England’s coaching set-up since early 2021. Trescothick will be working closely with white-ball captain Jos Buttler, who is close to him given their time together as players for Somerset.

Buttler returned to the field for training this week after a cal injury ruled him out of the Hundred competition and could play for Lancashire in the T20 Blast quarterfinal against Sussex on September 4. England’s series against Australia will start just 24 hours after the scheduled close of the final Test match against Sri Lanka, which means teams will be different for both series.

“They have a busy schedule,” Trescothick said. “The two series very closely overlap,” he added. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is yet to advertise the white-ball coach position left vacant by Mott. Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara, former England all-rounder, and current Northern Superchargers coach Andrew Flintoff are among the favourites for the role.

Ind vs Eng fifth Test | I have learnt a lot from Ashwin and Jadeja, says Kuldeep https://artifex.news/article67925982-ece/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 15:48:24 +0000 https://artifex.news/article67925982-ece/ Read More “Ind vs Eng fifth Test | I have learnt a lot from Ashwin and Jadeja, says Kuldeep” »

After playing a pivotal role in restricting England to 218 by taking five for 72, Kuldeep Yadav was quick to acknowledge the contributions of seniors like R. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja in Dharamsala.

Underplaying his efforts on the day, Kuldeep said, “I have been playing international cricket for 7 years and I have played a lot with Ash and Jaddu bhai. In some series, there were not many opportunities (for me). I have learnt a lot from Ashwin and Jadeja. In Hyderabad, I had a long chat with Ash bhai and he told me the changes that I needed to make in terms of the mindset. He gives a lot of ideas and he’s a special player.”

Asked about him and Ashwin prompting each other to lead the team into the dressing room after England’s innings, Kuldeep said, “I wanted him to lead the team since it was his 100th Test. But Ash Bhai reminded me that he had 35 balls (with which he took five or more wickets in a Test innings) and told me to keep this one and walk on.”

Kuldeep once again underplayed his effort of becoming the fastest to get 50 Test wickets in terms of the deliveries bowled. “I don’t think too much about records because they are meant to be broken. You are playing for India and you only want to put your skills to test. A lot of players don’t get opportunities, so I am grateful and lucky to have played for the country. I always want to contribute to the team’s success.”

Earlier, England’s assistant coach Marcus Trescothick admitted that his team did not put enough runs on the board. However, he did not miss the opportunity to sound rather brazen.

“We are a very unique side in how we go about things. I don’t think we will study what India does too much. We don’t get too down when we have bad days, we don’t get too high when we have good days.

“You just have to stay level and recognise what you can do better. Hopefully, we come back and improve,” he signed off.

England cricket team assistant coach Marcus Trescothick made a bizarre claim that they will not study their opponents much after India dominated proceedings on Day 1 of the fifth Test match in Dharamsala on Thursday. England squandered a solid start as Kuldeep Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin bundled them out for just 218. Later, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma both scored half-centuries as the hosts took control of the match. Trescothick said that England are looking to ‘stay level’ and make a comeback but pointed out that they are a unique side who will not look too much into their opponents.

“We are a very unique side in how we go about things. I don’t think we will study what India do too much.”

“We don’t get too down when we have bad days, we don’t get too high when we have good days.”

“You just have to stay level and recognise what you can do better. Hopefully we come back and improve,” said Trescothick after the match.

Trescothick also found some positives for England on Day 1 of the match as he pointed out how the visitors batted in the first session with special praise for Zak Crawley. However, he was quick to say that England did not get enough partnerships to take them to a big total.

“We had some good things – the way we played up until lunch when the ball swung around more than we expected, Crawley getting that score.”

“We just didn’t get those partnerships going to get a big score and put the total on the board we needed to.”

“It was a challenging day, no doubt about that,” said Trescothick.
