The ability to generate pace and bounce is Marco Jansen’s natural gift, but the 6.8-feet-tall pacer’s subtler variations are a result of improvisation and relentless training.

Jansen dug deep into his bag of tricks and pulled out a delivery that he developed on his own to take the sting out of New Zealand’s innings in their T20 World Cup contest on Saturday (February 14, 2026). On the face of it, it was a slower delivery that induced Mark Chapman’s leading edge to the backward point fielder.

“It is not a knuckleball, but it is not a back-of-the-hand palm ball either. It is a mixture of the two. If I bowl the knuckleball, you can see my knuckles. So, I specialised my own version,” Jansen said.

“For me, it was about getting another ball in my arsenal, so I would not get hit for a six.”

Necessity is indeed the mother of invention.

Once world-class players get going, difficult to stop them: Jansen https://artifex.news/article70347113-ece/ Mon, 01 Dec 2025 23:00:00 +0000 https://artifex.news/article70347113-ece/ Read More “Once world-class players get going, difficult to stop them: Jansen” »

South Africa all-rounder Marco Jansen says stopping world-class batters like Virat Kohli becomes almost impossible once they settle in, admitting that the Indian star’s ability to extend his innings makes him one of the toughest opponents to bowl to. Reflecting on Kohli’s match-winning century in the first ODI, Jansen said the only realistic window for a bowler is in the first few deliveries.

“When you bowl to world-class players, it’s quite difficult to get them out. I always try to get a batter in his first 10 or 15 balls. That’s when they’re still getting used to the wicket,” Jansen said.

“But once they’re in, and they get on a roll, it’s very difficult to stop them. Everyone here knows how to play — that’s why you go to plan B or C.” Kohli hit his 52nd ODI hundred on Sunday (November 30, 2025) to shape India’s 17-run win that gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Jansen, who first bowled to Kohli as a 17-year-old net bowler during India’s 2017-18 tour of South Africa, said the challenge of bowling to one of the modern greats remains both frustrating and enjoyable.

“It’s nice to watch him play. Growing up watching him on TV to actually bowling to him now… it’s annoying but it’s fun at the same time,” he said. “He drives well, he pulls well, cuts well, plays with his pads well. I don’t think much has changed — he’s just batting longer and longer.” On his own batting form in the series, the tall left-hander said the presence of a settled top order has allowed him to play with freedom, even as he continues to make rapid strides as a lower-order batter in the ongoing white-ball series against India.

“It’s always nice to walk in when the top five are on a roll. I’m just watching the ball and playing it as it comes. At the moment it’s working for me.” Jansen said the Proteas were not too disheartened by going 0-1 down and believed they were “doing the right things” despite India’s win.

“We didn’t bowl too badly. They got early wickets, we were on the back foot, then we pulled it back. It’s just about adding the good things on top of each other like we’ve been doing in the Test squad,” he said.

He confirmed that injured players remained under medical supervision and a clearer update would be available when the squad regroups ahead of the second ODI in Raipur.

Regular skipper Temba Bavuma was ‘rested’ for the Ranchi ODI and Aiden Markram led in his place.

South African all-rounder Marco Jansen hit seven sixes during his 93-run knock against India in the second Test of the ongoing two-match series in Guwahati, surpassing legends Matthew Hayden and Vivian Richards to set a new record for the most sixes hit by a visiting batter in a single Test innings in India.

Before Jansen, the record was held jointly by Hayden (2001) and Richards (1974), both of whom had hit six sixes in a Test innings against India in India.

Jansen also equaled the record for the most sixes in a Test innings by a South African, joining AB de Villiers (vs. Australia, Cape Town, 2009) and Quinton de Kock (vs. West Indies, Gros Islet, 2021) with seven sixes. His effort gave him the second-most sixes hit from No. 9 or lower in a Test innings, behind only Tim Southee’s nine on debut against England in Napier in 2008.

Jansen also became the 11th player to be dismissed in the nervous nineties while batting from No. 9 or below in Tests, the first South African to do so, and only the second player to fall in the 90s against India in that position, after Mitchell Starc’s 99 in Mohali in 2013.

Jansen came to the crease with South Africa at 334-7 and Senuran Muthusamy batting unbeaten at 67. After facing nine balls watchfully, Jansen made his intentions clear with a six off Ravindra Jadeja’s delivery. He continued the same aggressive approach against India’s other two spinners in Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav as well.

While Muthusamy brought up his maiden Test century, Jansen hit a half-century in just 52 balls. Jansen and Muthusamy formed a 97-run partnership before the latter was dismissed by India pacer Mohammed Siraj for 109.

However, Jansen continued his onslaught and scored a 91-ball 93 runs innings, hitting seven sixes and six boundaries, helping South Africa post 489-10 in their first innings.

South Africa vs Pakistan 2nd Test Day 4, Highlights: Despite a stunning century by Pakistan captain Shan Masood and a valiant batting effort by Pakistan to overturn the follow-on deficit, South Africa romped to a 10-wicket victory and a convincing 2-0 series win at home. Pakistan batted for majority of Day 4, with Masood making 145, Salman Agha 48 and Mohammad Rizwan 41. However, the second-innings total of 478 was not enough due to South Africa’s huge lead early on, and a final target of 58 was easily chased down by the Proteas. David Bedingham opened the batting, scoring 44 off 30 balls to help them reach the target in just 7.1 overs. (Scorecard)

The win ensures that South Africa will top the World Test Championship (WTC) table for the 2023-25 cycle. Their next game will be the final, against Australia at Lord’s in June.

South Africa’s top-order stumbled against Pakistan’s pace attack as the first cricket test headed towards an exciting finish after Marco Jansen’s six-wicket haul had set the home team a tricky 148-run target on Saturday (December 28, 2024).

South Africa, needing a win in one of the two matches against Pakistan to seal its place in next June’s World Test Championship final, wobbled to 27-3 at stumps on a wicket where the quick bowlers have consistently troubled the batters.

Fast bowler Mohammad Abbas, returning to test cricket after more than three years, trapped Tony de Zorzi (2) and Tristan Stubbs (1) lbw in the final session.

In between Abbas’ strikes, Khurram Shahzad convinced skipper Shan Masood to go for a successful lbw television referral against Ryan Rickelton, who fell for a five-ball duck.

South Africa’s hopes could now rest with Aiden Markram, who was unbeaten on 22, and captain Temba Bavuma, who is yet to get off the mark.

Earlier, Jansen’s 6-52 helped South Africa bowl Pakistan out for 237 after rain had delayed play for three hours.

Saud Shakeel (84) and Babar Azam (50) struck half centuries, but Jansen’s three-wicket burst in four overs dented Pakistan’s progress as the visitors lost seven wickets for 84 runs after resuming on 88-3.

Shakeel and Babar dominated the pace trio of Kagiso Rabada (2-68), Corbin Bosch (1-54) and Dane Paterson (1-55) with aggressive batting in a 79-run stand.

Babar looked in good touch but, soon after completing a first test half-century in 20 innings, he sliced Jansen’s short ball straight to Bosch at deep backward point.

Mohammad Rizwan (3) and Salman Ali Agha (1) also fell to reckless shots. The former gloved a wayward leg-side delivery from Jansen to the wicketkeeper and Salman was caught behind after playing an expansive drive to the third ball he faced.

Shakeel showed plenty of composure as Pakistan stretched its lead to 136 before he missed a full toss from Jansen and was lbw.

Pakistan was finally bowled out in the last session when debutant Bosch claimed his fifth wicket of the match. (AP) ATK
