The collapse of a gold mine in southern Sudan has killed at least 60 small-scale miners, two survivors told AFP on Wednesday (September 16, 2026), while many more are missing and feared dead under the rubble.

Shafts began collapsing in the Al-Zaraa mine near the town of El-Nahud in West Kordofan on Tuesday (September 15, 2026), and by the following morning 60 bodies had been retrieved.

“We don’t know how many more are still inside,” one of the survivors, Khair al-Sayyed Jabara, told AFP after taking part with fellow miners in the all-night rescue operation.

Two minibus taxis collided head-on, and a third vehicle crashed into them on one of South Africa’s main highways, killing at least 21 people and leaving several seriously injured, authorities said on Monday (September 14, 2026).

The crash on Sunday (September 13, 2026) night in the Western Cape Province took place between the small towns of Prince Albert and Leeu-Gamka, around 380 kilometres (236 miles) east of Cape Town, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said.

The agency added that the death toll “may change as emergency services and authorities in the Western Cape continue their assessment of the scene.”

Minibus taxis are the main mode of public transport for millions of people in South Africa and are often involved in fatal collisions. Two separate crashes involving minibus taxis in January left at least 25 people dead, including 14 children.

Three of the victims in Sunday (September 13, 2026) night’s crash were rushed to a hospital but were declared dead on arrival there, police said.

Authorities believe the crash started with the two minibus taxis colliding head-on, after which an SUV crashed into them, the Western Cape Mobility department said.

The N1 highway was closed at the scene of the crash, while an investigation was opened by the Road Traffic Management Corporation.

At ​least seven passengers ‌were killed when a ​bus ⁠caught fire in southern Vietnam early ‌on Tuesday, police said.

The ‌bus was ‌traveling ⁠from Lam ⁠Dong province to the nearby business hub ​Ho ‌Chi Minh City when it caught fire, ‌with flames quickly ​engulfing the 24-seat vehicle ⁠and passengers inside trapped, the police-led ‌Ministry of Public Security said in a statement.

Police have launched an ‌investigation into ​the cause of the fire. State ⁠media reports said ⁠five other passengers ‌were injured.
