Assam Rifles personnel on Saturday (May 9, 2026) secured the release of a Manipur woman who was abducted by members of the Kuki National Army-Burma (KNA-B) and Village Volunteers Eastern Zone during a pre-dawn attack on Tangkhul Naga villages in Kamjong district along the India-Myanmar border on May 7.

A spokesperson for the paramilitary force said the release of Olina Ningshen, 45, was secured from the abductors at a place south of Z. Choro village “under the watch” of Assam Rifles, intelligence and other agencies.

According to a statement issued by the paramilitary force, the abducted woman’s husband, the village headman and members of civil society organisations (CSOs) were present during the release.

“After the release, the family and CSOs were taken to unit headquarters at Chassad (near the international border) for the formal handing over and documentation,” the statement said. The locals were later moved to their village, Khangphat Khn.

The abducted woman and others were provided medical and psychological assistance.

Troops of the Assam Rifles, India’s oldest armed police force, brought the unrest reported near Z. Choro village on May 7 under control “despite challenging conditions”.

“Acting proactively during the incident, the Assam Rifles deployed multiple rescue teams. Ten houses affected by the violence were secured, and civilians were evacuated to the nearest safe location,” the spokesperson said.

Fifteen distressed villagers, including women and children, were rescued and provided humanitarian assistance at an Assam Rifles camp near the international border.

The troops also apprehended an armed member of the KNA-B, identified as 38-year-old Lal Thag John, during search operations in Churachandpur district. He was later handed over to the local police along with a weapon, a magazine and ammunition.

New Delhi:

In a sharp counter to senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh’s question on why Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not visited violence-hit Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh has asked why former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao did not travel to the Northeastern state during the turmoil in 1992-93.

Addressing the media on the last day of 2024, Chief Minister Singh yesterday said it had been an unfortunate year for Manipur and hoped peace would be restored this year.

“This entire year has been very unfortunate. I want to say sorry to the people of the state for what’s happening till today since last May 3. Many people lost their loved ones. Many people left their homes. I feel regret. I apologise. But now, I hope after seeing the last three to four months progress towards the peace, I believe by 2025, the normalcy will be restored in the state,” he said.

“I want to appeal to all the communities in the state, whatever happened has happened. You have to forgive and forget the past mistakes and we have to start a new life (towards) a peaceful and prosperous Manipur,” the Chief Minister added.

Mr Ramesh responded with a jab, accusing the Centre of neglecting the state. “Why can’t the Prime Minister go to Manipur and say the same thing there? He has deliberately avoided visiting the state since May 4th, 2023, even as he jets around the country and the world. The people of Manipur simply cannot understand this neglect,” the Congress leader said in a post on X.

The Chief Minister responded with a long post, holding Congress responsible for the situation in Manipur today. “Everyone, including yourself, is aware that Manipur is in turmoil today because of the past sins committed by the Congress, such as the repeated settlement of Burmese refugees in Manipur and the signing of the SoO Agreement with Myanmar-based militants in the state, spearheaded by @PChidambaram_IN during his tenure as the Home Minister of India,” he said.

Mr Singh was earlier with the Congress and switched to the BJP after disagreements with then Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh.

The Chief Minister said his apology was a “sincere act of expressing my grief for the people who have been left displaced and become homeless”. “As a Chief Minister, it was an appeal to forgive and forget what had happened. However, you brought politics into it,” he said.

“Let me remind you: The Naga-Kuki clashes in Manipur resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,300 people and the displacement of thousands more. The violence persisted for several years, with periodic escalations occurring between 1992 and 1997, though the most intense period of conflict was in 1992-1993.

“The clashes began in 1992 and continued at varying intensities for around five years (1992-1997). This period marked one of the bloodiest ethnic conflicts in northeast India, deeply affecting relations between the Naga and Kuki communities in Manipur. Did Shri PV Narasimha Rao, who served as the Prime Minister of India from 1991 to 1996 and was the President of the Indian National Congress during this time, come to Manipur to extend an apology?,” the Chief Minister asked.

“The Kuki-Paite clashes claimed 350 lives in the state. During most of the Kuki-Paite clashes (1997-1998), Shri IK Gujral was the Prime Minister of India. Did he visit Manipur and say sorry to the people?” he added. “Instead of putting efforts to solve the core issues in Manipur, why is the @INCIndia playing politics over it all the time?”

Unrest in Manipur has claimed over 180 lives since May last year, when violence erupted over the Meities community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and the tribal Kukis’ opposition to this.

Barbed wire fencing was seen around Leishangthem Susindro Meitei’s home.

Days after the attack on the residences of several lawmakers in Manipur, a state minister has increased security at his home. Manipur’s cabinet minister Leishangthem Susindro Meitei has fortified his home with barbed wire fencing, visuals showed. Mr Meitei, a BJP MLA from Khurai, has also built a bunker at his house.

Manipur has been hit by a fresh spate of violence over the last week even as inter-communal clashes that broke out on May 3 last year between the ethnic Meitei and Kuki communities have resulted in more than 200 deaths and displaced around 60,000 people.

Protesters, demonstrating against recent violent killings, ransacked and set fire to the homes of MLAs and ministers on Saturday. An agitating mob even tried to barge into the personal residence of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

Security has been tightened in Imphal, particularly around the residence of Mr Singh and the Raj Bhavan, with limited vehicle movement seen in the affected areas.

Amid escalating violence, the administration suspended broadband and mobile internet services in seven districts – Imphal East and West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi and Churachandpur – for two days to prevent anti-social elements from spreading content that might create law and order problems – on November 16 which was then extended for two more days on Monday.

The suspension on broadband services, however, was lifted today after “considering the sufferings of the common people as the internet ban had affected the functioning of important offices, institutions, and people who work from home”, the state government said.

To curb the rising violence, the Manipur police imposed a curfew in both Imphal West and Imphal East districts.

What Triggered Recent Spate Of Violence?

A Kuki woman was found burned to death in a village in Jiribam district last week. Days after her body was found, 10 armed suspected Kuki insurgents were killed in a gunfight with security forces after they tried to attack a police station in the same district. During the gunfight, a Meitei family of six – including an eight-month-old baby went missing.

The women and children were taken hostage by a group of suspected Kuki militants from Jiribam’s Bokobera neighbourhood while another group of militants were engaged in a gunfight with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), sources said.

Laisharam Herojit, a low-level worker in the state government, whose two children, wife, mother-in-law and wife’s sister were among the hostages.

The Meitei community has hit the streets alleging the government did not do enough to save the hostages.

On Monday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a high-level review meeting – the second such meeting since Sunday – with senior officials in Delhi to assess the security situation in Manipur.

In the meeting, it was decided to dispatch an additional 50 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces, totalling over 5,000 personnel, to Manipur due to the challenging situation in the state. A total of 20 CAPFs were deployed in Manipur a few days ago.
