A team with an imposing batting line-up comprising Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran and Rishabh Pant can send shivers down the spine of any bowling unit. Yet, Lucknow Super Giants endured a forgettable IPL 2026 campaign, getting eliminated after a loss to Chennai Super Kings in its 11th game.

As has been the case throughout the tournament, LSG’s batting fortunes nosedived after a blistering start provided by Josh Inglis, another power-hitter in the team’s armoury in Sunday’s game against CSK.

Tom Moody, LSG’s director of cricket, admitted that inconsistent batting performances, particularly in the middle order, hurt the team this season, saying the side repeatedly failed to build on strong starts and finish innings strongly.

“If we look at our season from a broad lens, I think our batting has let us down, particularly our middle order. It hasn’t shown the consistency that’s required to have success consistently… our batting hasn’t fired, so we’re exposed down the back-end of the innings.”

He also spoke about the impact of injuries and unavailable players on the team balance, especially the absence of Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga.

“Hasaranga was a significant miss for us because he was a really important key to the puzzle of how we were trying to stack up as a side. He offered that point of difference with a mystery spinner and also depth at No. 8.”

Rain in the lead-up to the game has added another layer of intrigue.

With changing equations and restless anticipation becoming the flavour of the season almost by the minute, Chennai Super Kings will look to bring certainty and provide a clearer narrative to its IPL 2026 campaign when the Men in Yellow host Lucknow Super Giants at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (May 10, 2026).

Emboldened by the presence of two unswerving allies in confidence and momentum, besides a vociferously passionate fanbase to count on, Super Kings will be raring to pounce on an opponent which is coming off a victory over defending champion Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Lucknow’s recent surge has been powered by strong individual form. Mitchell Marsh’s commanding century in the previous outing set the tone at the top, while Nicholas Pooran and Rishabh Pant have begun to rediscover fluency, restoring both intent and balance to the middle-order.

On the bowling front, LSG has a mix of experience and variation. Mohammed Shami can make inroads with the new ball, while Prince Yadav’s energy and wicket-taking ability could prove decisive in the middle overs. However, the rest of the bowling unit will need to sustain pressure consistently to keep the opposition batting in check.

Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson will be key to the batting fortunes of Super Kings. The 20-year-old Kartik Sharma’s confidence will be sky-high after guiding his side home in the last two games. The bowlers led by Anshul Kamboj, Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad will be crucial if the team aims to continue its journey upward.

There is much at stake for both sides, albeit to varying degrees. A victory would significantly strengthen the home team’s hopes of securing a playoff berth and could further inspire Ruturaj & Co to raise their level. Meanwhile, the visitor, languishing in 10th place, will be determined to put on a show in its remaining games and finish the season strongly.

Rain in the lead-up to the game has added another layer of intrigue, and if the weather stays clear, an absorbing contest could be on the cards.

Lucknow Super Giants fast bowler Prince Yadav said that his team was “just thinking match by match” after it stayed alive in IPL 2026 with a thrilling victory over Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Ekana Stadium on Thursday (May 7).

Prince said that while he was happy to dismiss Virat Kohli for nought, the team’s victory was sweeter. “If I had taken the wicket but we had lost, I wouldn’t be as happy, so the best thing is that the team won,” the 24-year-old said.

Prince also expressed his appreciation for the mentorship of Mohammed Shami. “I’ve got to learn a lot with the new ball from Shami bhaiyya, but the thing I appreciate the most about him is that when you are bowling, he’ll stand at mid-off or mid-on to help,” Prince said. “When an experienced player is with you like that, you become more confident.”

Prince’s display also earned him plaudits from opposing skipper Rajat Patidar, who described his spell as “game-changing”.

“I’ve played quite a few domestic matches against Prince, when he played for Delhi,” Patidar said. “He has plenty of variations, he has pace, his line and length is good, and he can swing the ball, he’s a proper fast bowler.”

Patidar also credited LSG opener Mitchell Marsh for his blistering century, but said that he was happy with his team’s performance, saying, “With the way they started, I’m mostly satisfied with the way we bowled and controlled the game. We were just two shots behind in the end”.

Lucknow Super Giants assistant coach Lance Klusener said his side still had “a lot of pride to play for” in the remainder of the IPL 2026 season.

“It’s tough, but I think we’ve all got a responsibility to our brand, we’ve got a responsibility to the people in our changing room, to our owners as well. Even though the playoff chances might be slim, we’ve still got a lot of pride to play for,” Klusener said.

The South African hinted that younger players may get a look in. “A lot of younger people may get opportunities going forward. The group has a responsibility to make sure they get the best platform to perform as well,” added the 54-year-old.

Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bengaluru spin-bowling coach Malolan Rangarajan backed wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma to return to his best.

“Obviously, Jitesh hasn’t started as well as he would or we would have liked. We’ve been supporting him, and he’s a very sorted individual. It’s not by chance he has played for the country, and he contributed for us last year as well,” Malolan said.

Punjab Kings fast bowling coach James Hopes, who has had a long association with Shreyas Iyer in the IPL, believes the key to the India batter’s recent success is his ability to identify his shortcomings.

“He is very aware of what his perceived weaknesses were over the years, and he comes into this season having nailed them… Once he finds his way back into the Indian team, you will see the batter he is going to be for the rest of his career. A world-class short-format batter and someone who could fit into long-format cricket pretty easily,” Hopes, who has also spent three years with Shreyas as a coach at Delhi Capitals, said.

The former Australian all-rounder also hailed his captaincy, under which PBKS reached the final last year. “From a captaincy viewpoint, he has got a lot of experience. He was very young when he was captaining Delhi, and he is more experienced; he is very well planned, and he still follows his gut. When he is with the team, he is also one of the boys; he really endears himself to the group.”
