Centuries from Arshin Kulkarni and Devdutt Padikkal guided Maharashtra and Karnataka to competitive totals in their respective Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) quarterfinal matches on Saturday. In the first quarterfinal, Maharashtra is facing Punjab at Vadodara’s Kotambi Stadium, while Karnataka is playing Baroda at Vadodara’s Moti Bagh Stadium. In the Maharashtra-Punjab clash, Punjab won the toss and chose to field first. Maharashtra lost their skipper and star batter Ruturaj Gaikwad (5) and Siddhesh Veer (0) early, reducing them to 8/2. From there, Kulkarni and Ankit Bawne (60 off 85 balls, with seven fours) put together a fine 145-run partnership for the third wicket. Kulkarni played a brilliant knock, scoring 107 off 137 balls, with 14 fours.

Down the order, a half-century from Nikhil Naik (52* off 29 balls, with three fours and three sixes) and Satyajeet Bachhav (20* off 15 balls, with a four and a six) propelled Maharashtra to 275/6, as they put up a 63-run stand for the seventh wicket.

Pacer Arshdeep Singh (3/56) was the top bowler for Punjab in his nine overs. Naman Dhir took two wickets, while Abhishek Sharma claimed one.

In the other match, Baroda won the toss and put Karnataka to bowl first. Mayank Agarwal’s unstoppable run was ended by Lukman Meriwala (1/65) as he was dismissed for just six runs. However, Padikkal continued his purple patch in one-day cricket, putting on a 133 runs for the second wicket with Aneesh KV (52 in 64 balls, with four boundaries and a six). Padikkal scored his ninth List-A cricket century in just 30 innings. He also has 11 fifties in the format.

Other useful contributions down the order took the team to 281/8 in their 50 overs.

Raj Limbani (3/47) and Atit Sheth (3/41 in eight overs) were the top bowlers for Baroda.

Padikkal will play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, while Arshin Kulkarnil will represent Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Rishabh Pant shattered Shreyas Iyer’s record to become the costliest cricketer in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. Pant was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for a mammoth amount of Rs 27 Crore. There was a massive bidding war between LSG and Sunrisers Hyderabad for the Indian cricket team wicket-keeper batter but it was the Lucknow Super Giants who won the bidding at Rs 20.75 Crore. However, after Delhi Capitals decided to use their Right To Match (RTM) card, LSG came up with a final bid of Rs 27 crore which proved to be the winning bid. Earlier in the auction, Shreyas Iyer was sold to Punjab Kings for Rs 26.75 Crore.

The amount LSG spent for Pant ensured Shreyas Iyer’s record of being the tournament’s costliest player lasted barely a few minutes after Punjab Kings broke the bank to buy the India batter for Rs 26.75 crore.

Moments before Pant emerged as the most expensive player, Iyer surpassed the record held by Australian pacer Mitchell Starc, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore in the last auction.

Pant went to LSG after his former franchise Delhi Capitals did not use the Right to Match card to buy him back.

Starc got a much lower price this time and was sold to Delhi Capitals for Rs 11.75 crore, while England’s Jos Buttler went to Gujarat Titans for Rs 15.75 crore.

Among others, left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh’s consistency earned him a massive bid of Rs 18 crore, also from Punjab Kings via the Right to Match card, while South African speedster Kagiso Rabada was bought for Rs 10.75 crore by Gujarat Titans.

Iyer, the former Kolkata Knight Riders captain, started with a base price of Rs two crore.

Delhi Capitals had the bid at Rs 26 crore for him but PBKS raised the amount to get the player.

Chennai Super Kings started with the first bid for Arshdeep, whose base price was also Rs two crore.

Eventually, after an intense bidding war, the seamer was bought back by Punjab, who exercised the right to match option to complete the deal, having released him earlier.

This is the second time an IPL auction is being held outside the country after last year’s event in Dubai.

Aiden Markram struck a brisk half-century as Sunrisers Hyderabad overcame some late jitters to beat Chennai Super Kings by six wickets in the Indian Premier League on Friday. The South African batsman hit four fours and a six in his 50-run knock to help Hyderabad overhaul Chennai’s below-par total of 165-5 with 11 balls to spare at the packed Rajiv Gandhi International stadium. The victory lifted Hyderabad to fifth place in the 10-team competition with two wins from four games.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Hyderabad made a flying start with opener Abhishek Sharma hammering 27 runs including three sixes and two fours in the second over by Mukesh Choudhary.

But his heroics were cut short by Deepak Chahar who had Sharma caught by Ravindra Jadeja for 37.

Markram then steadied the innings with his well-composed knock off 36 balls before being trapped leg before by England’s Moeen Ali.

Ali then struck again in his next over to remove Shahbaz Ahmed (18), stunning the home crowd into silence.

Heinrich Klassen and Nitish Kumar Reddy however ensured there were no further setbacks and carried the team past the target.

Chennai started slowly after being put in to bat, with openers Rachin Ravindra (12) and Gaikwad (26) cautious in their approach.

Shivam Dube provided a fillip to the innings with a quickfire 45 off 24 balls studded with four sixes and two fours.

He appeared set for a bigger knock but was caught at backward point off Australian fast bowling star Pat Cummins.

Ajinkya Rahane (35) and Ravindra Jadeja (31 not out) also made useful contributions but Hyderabad bowlers did well to keep the batsmen in check.

A disciplined bowling performance meant CSK could only add 37 runs in the last five overs.
