Offering further respite to commercial entities seeking supplies of liquified petroleum gas (LPG), the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) Friday (March 27, 2026) called to increase allocation of the hydrocarbon gas to States and Union Territories (UTs) by another 20%. Thus, taking the total allocation of commercial LPG to 70% of the pre-crisis levels.

The latest additional allocations seek to accord priority to sectors where piped natural gas may not serve as an alternative.

This includes labour-intensive and essential sectors which support other sectors, as steel, automobile, textile, dye, chemicals, and plastics.

“Among these, priority shall be given to process industries or those requiring LPG for specialised heating purposes that cannot be substituted by Natural Gas,” the government’s letter emphasised.

Earlier, the Union Steel Ministry had sought the Petroleum Ministry’s intervention to ensure plants are not affected by LPG shortages.

Reiterating the PNG push

Further, the latest allocation is also inclusive of the 10% additional allocation announced earlier in March, which was conditioned on States and UTs helping spur the uptake of piped gas in their jurisdictions.

In its latest communication to States and UTs, the ministry reiterated that in order to receive the latest additional quantum of 20%, entities must apply with city-gas distributors for a transition to piped gas.

It, however, grants an exemption to industries where LPG is used in its regular process, and for specialised purposes where a transition to natural gas is not possible.

“If industries specified in paragraph 1 of this letter [that is, steel, automobile, textile, dye, chemicals, and plastics] where LPG is used in the process and for special purposes which cannot be substituted by natural gas, such requirement would stand waived,” the communication read.

On Thursday (March 26), the government refuted assertions about the push for piped gas being premised on pressure on LPG.

“The claim that PNG is being pushed because LPG is running out is misinformation. LPG supply is secure. PNG is simply a better, more affordable and highly convenient fuel for India’s households,” it held.

India’s federal steel ministry has sought assistance from the oil ministry ‌to ensure that steel plants are not affected by liquefied petroleum gas shortages, a source with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters on ‌Thursday.

India, the world’s second-biggest crude steel producer, is in ‌the midst of its worst ‌LPG supply crisis in decades as shipments from key producers in West Asia have been disrupted because of the Iran war.

“We have ‌taken up with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to see within the existing conditions ‌what best can be done,” the source said, “We are still under discussion.”

India’s small steel producers have warned of production halts due to gas shortages, Reuters reported ‌earlier.

“If this LPG situation continues, it will not only impact margins but also affect jobs, future investments in value-added steel, and the confidence to commit to long-term ‌contracts, both in India and overseas,” said Vedant Goel, a director at Pune-based Enlight Metals.

India has invoked emergency measures, prioritising natural gas for essential sectors after LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz were ‌disrupted by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, constraining domestic supply.

Chhattisgarh caps commercial LPG supply, sets timeline for domestic refill booking

The Chhattisgarh Government has capped the supply of commercial LPG cylinders at 20% of the previous month’s consumption, while directing time-bound online refill booking for domestic consumers, officials said on Thursday (March 26, 2026).

Based on available stock, priority categories for LPG supply have been identified. These include educational institutions, hospitals, military and paramilitary camps, jails, hotels, social welfare institutions, railway and airport canteens, government offices, guest houses, animal feed units, and restaurants, an official statement said.

The decision was taken on Wednesday during a review meeting of regional managers of oil companies, chaired by the state’s food department secretary, Reena Baba Saheb Kangale, to assess LPG availability and streamline the distribution system in the state amid supply concerns following the West Asia conflict.

Oil prices fell more than 5%, and Asian shares gained on Wednesday (March 25) over the prospect of a de-escalation of the Iran war and negotiations between the United States and Iran.

Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 was up 2.8% to 53,721.30 in early trading. South Korea’s Kospi gained 3.1% to 5,728.22. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 1.2% to 25,374.95, while the Shanghai Composite index was 0.9% higher at 3,914.09.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is said to have offered a 15-point ceasefire plan to Iran. Mr. Trump’s claims of progress being made from talks with Iran this week and his postponement on Monday of a deadline to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz have also fuelled optimism that an end to the Iran war could come soon.

Following a communication from the oil marketing companies on Monday (March 9, 2026) that LPG cylinder supply will be affected because of the U.S.- Israel war on Iran, hotels in Coimbatore district have decided to cut down on service timings and menus. Hotels and retirement communities are exploring alternative sources of fuel.

The Sree Annapoorna Sree Gowrishankar Group put out a notice on Monday night informing customers that it would limit its menu to essential items and some items would be available only at specific hours of the day.

K.A. Ramaswamy, president of the Coimbatore District Hoteliers Association, said the oil marketing companies stopped the supply of commercial LPG cylinders from Tuesday (March 10). “We are managing with the cylinders that we have. We have cut down on Chinese items at the live counters, removed parottas from the menu, and restricted dosa and puri items to peak hours,” he said.

The 262 hotels that are members of the association will be able to manage for a couple of days and may start shutting down operations thereafter. “There are thousands of smaller hotels in the district. No one operating in the city limits uses firewood because of inspections and safety norms. They will be the worst-hit,” he said.
