Mumbai Indians on Wednesday named uncapped South African medium-pacer Kwena Maphaka as injured Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka’s replacement for the upcoming IPL season. The 23-year-old Lankan pacer suffered a hamstring injury in the just-concluded ODI series in Bangladesh, which the visitors lost 1-2. Madushanka was roped in by MI during the IPL Auction ahead of the upcoming season for Rs 4.6 crore, having shone during the ODI World Cup last year, claiming 21 wickets in nine meetings.

Meanwhile, the 17-year-old Maphaka came into the limelight after being adjudged the Player of the Tournament during the U19 World Cup at home this year, scalping 21 wickets at an average of 9.71.

He is rated very highly by Proteas legend Allan Donald.

Having played for South Africa A and South Africa Emerging teams since last year, he was roped in by Paarl Royals for SA20 2023-24 but did not get to play a game.

Maphaka’s T20 numbers read 13 wickets in nine games at an economy of 6.71, including a four-wicket haul.

“Maphaka already is capable of generating serious pace and has a very mean bouncer that is known to hurry the batters up. He debuted for the South Africa U19 team at 15 & has already played in two U19 World Cups,” said MI in a media release.

“He is capable of touching speeds of 140kph, and his death bowling and yorkers were a standout too at the U19 World Cup earlier this year.

“He will share the dressing room with two of the best bowlers in world cricket – Lasith Malinga, bowling coach and Jasprit Bumrah putting him on a path of learning, development and building on that knowledge.” MI plays its IPL 2024 opening match versus last season’s runner-up, Gujarat Titans, in Ahmedabad on March 24 under new skipper Hardik Pandya.

Warrier Replaces Shami In GT

Gujarat Titans have roped in Kerala medium-pacer Sandeep Warrier as a replacement for injured senior Indian seamer Mohammed Shami, the Indian Premier League said on Wednesday.

Shami recently underwent a successful Achilles heel surgery in London for his right heel problem.

He is expected to be undergoing rehabilitation for almost the whole of IPL 2024, thus ruling him out of the entire event.

Shami has not played competitive cricket since last year’s ODI World Cup final here, which India lost by six wickets against Australia.

As for Warrier, the 32-year-old has played five IPL matches since 2019, grabbing two wickets at an economy of 7.88.

“Shami – the veteran Indian pacer – recently successfully underwent surgery for his right heel problem and is currently recovering,” read a statement from IPL. “His replacement, Sandeep Warrier, has so far played 5 IPL matches and will join GT for his base price of INR 50 Lac.” GT will be his fourth IPL franchise, having previously played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians.

GT will play their IPL 2024 opener against Mumbai Indians on March 24.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Sunday confirmed that star pacer Dilshan Madushanka has been ruled out of the third and final ODI match against Bangladesh after sustaining an injury. According to ESPNCricinfo, Madushanka could also miss the initial stage of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 for the Mumbai Indians (MI). SLC took to their official X (formerly Twitter) account and confirmed that the 23-year-old pacer will not take part in the ongoing tour of Bangladesh. The statement from SLC added that the pacer would return to his country and undergo “rehabilitation work”.

Madushanka sustained the injury during the second ODI match against Bangladesh on Friday in Chattogram.

“Dilshan Madushanka will not further take part in the ongoing tour as the bowler will return to start rehabilitation work after suffering an injury during the 2nd ODI. Madushanka, who left the field during the second ODI while bowling, has suffered a left hamstring injury, as confirmed by an MRI scan performed on the player,” SLC said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka team manager Mahinda Halangoda said that they are not sure how much time Madushanka will take to recover from his injury.

“We got the report on his injury only today [Sunday], and it shows a small tear. It’s a new injury. We’re not yet sure how long it will take for him to recover, but he’ll have to be assessed again when he goes home by the medical team at the high-performance centre. For now, we know he’s out of the ODI tomorrow for sure,” Halangoda was quoted by ESPNCricinfo as saying.

Sri Lanka will play against Bangladesh in the third ODI match on Monday at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. The final 50-over match will be a series since both sides have won each game in their first two encounters.

Sri Lanka have been hit hard by injuries to key players in the run up to the ongoing Asia Cup, and captain Dasun Shanaka on Wednesday said they can’t have control over such crisis but are confident of others standing up for the absentees in the continental tournament. Six-time champions Sri Lanka will open their Asia Cup campaign against Bangladesh here on Thursday, but they will be without four main players in Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Kumara and Dilshan Madhushanka.

“We can’t have control over injuries. You know the players who unfortunately missed out — Hasaranga, Chameera…they are big players, experienced players.

“But we have a young side and this will be a good experience for them and we are looking forward to the tournament,” said Shanaka here during the pre-match press meet.

Shanaka said they have enough quality players in the side to make an impression in the Asia Cup.

“Last time (in the 2022 Asia Cup) also we went in as underdogs and lost our first game against Afghanistan. But we still managed to finish with the trophy,” he said.

“There is no question about where we are sitting at the moment and about the team’s balance, so we are looking forward to the tournament.” Sri Lanka will be travelling to Pakistan after Thursday’s match for their fixture against Afghanistan in Lahore.

Shanaka did not read too much about the hectic travel.

“We were in the same situation during last year’s (T20) World Cup. That’s how, I think international cricket is played and we are used to it. It can be a worry but we are still managing it,” he said.

Shanaka said it is important for Sri Lanka to play competitive cricket ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup to be played in India from October 5 to November 19.

“We know the dominance of India and Pakistan in Asia. But Sri Lanka have a good history of playing well in World Cups and Asia Cup. So, it is important for Sri Lanka to play good, competitive cricket going into the World Cup,” he said.
