Former Liverpool captain Ron Yeats, who led the club to their first FA Cup and two top-flight titles, has died aged 86, the Premier League side announced on Saturday. The ex-Scotland defender was part of the Liverpool side that won the Second Division title under Bill Shankly in 1962 and went on to win the old First Division twice, the FA Cup in 1965 and the Charity Shield three times. He had been living with Alzheimer’s disease in recent years. Liverpool FC is mourning the passing of legendary former captain Ron Yeats,” read a club statement. “In the words of Bill Shankly, a ‘colossus’ in club history.

“The thoughts of everyone at LFC are with Ron’s wife, Ann, all of his family and his friends at this incredibly sad time.

“Flags across club sites will be lowered to half-mast today as a mark of respect.”

Yeats was signed from Dundee United in July 1961 by Shankly, who invited journalists to “take a walk around him, he’s a colossus” at the 6ft 2in (1.87 metre) defender’s unveiling.

Yates took over as captain within six months and went on to make 454 appearances over more than a decade at Anfield.

His record 417-match run as Reds skipper was only broken by Steven Gerrard in the last decade.

He left to become Tranmere’s player-manager for three years, followed by a brief spell in the United States before returning to Anfield in 1986 as chief scout for two decades.

Yeats also won two caps for Scotland.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said on Friday he was relaxed about his new club’s lack of transfer activity after inheriting a “very good team” at Anfield. Slot has the unenviable task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp but got off to a winning start by beating newly-promoted Ipswich 2-0 on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. Liverpool are the only side in the English top flight yet to make a single signing in the window. Spain international Martin Zubimendi rejected the opportunity to leave Real Sociedad, while a deal for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is reportedly close that would see the Georgian stay at the Mestalla this season on loan.

“I trust the team,” said Slot on why he is not stressing about the lack of new signings.

“I’ve said before, I have inherited a very good team, with young players. We trust them a lot. They proved that they have earned our trust.”

Slot takes charge of his first competitive game at Anfield on Sunday when Brentford are the visitors.

The Dutchman, though, said he was too focused on getting the three points to feel the nerves of having to impress the home fans.

“I am not nervous at all. Certainly not at this moment because I’m in the middle of preparation, prepare the team for Sunday,” he added.

“It wouldn’t be a good thing if you have nerves. I trust what me and my staff do to prepare the team in the best possible way. I trust the team a lot.”

Liverpool’s window has been more dominated by sales.

Sepp van den Berg and Fabio Carvalho have joined Brentford for combined fees of close to £50 million, while Bobby Clark has joined Red Bull Salzburg.

England defender Joe Gomez has also been linked with a move away before the transfer deadline in a week’s time.

The 27-year-old appears to have fallen down to fourth choice centre-back but Slot is keen for him to stay put.

“At this moment I am expecting everyone to be here. (But) everything can change,” said the former Feyenoord boss.

“He didn’t play a lot in the Euros and when he came back in the first sessions he couldn’t train the whole session, so we had to manage his load and that was also a bit (of) a reason why he wasn’t in the team on Saturday.

“But this week he had a good week in terms of load and how much he could do with the team.

“He is one of the players that I see new things from and learn things what I see from him.”

Liverpool host Manchester City in a defining moment in the Premier League title race as Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola conclude their top-flight rivalry on Sunday. Free-scoring Arsenal can go top for at least a day when they host Brentford, while Aston Villa face Tottenham in a vital showdown in the battle for a top-four finish. AFP Sport looks at three talking points ahead of the weekend’s action:

One more sleepless night for GuardiolaManchester City boss Pep Guardiola faces one last sleepless night as he wrestles with the problems posed by his great rival Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp’s bombshell revelation that he will quit as Liverpool manager at the end of this season has given extra gravitas to Sunday’s crucial clash with City at Anfield.

Although Guardiola has won five of the last six Premier League crowns, Klopp has been a constant thorn in his side, with Liverpool’s 2020 title the only break in City’s dynastic reign.

Guardiola revealed the depth of his respect for Klopp when he admitted the German’s departure would make it easier for him to relax before meetings with Liverpool.

“I will sleep better. The games against Liverpool have almost been a nightmare,” said Guardiola, whose second placed team are one point behind leaders Liverpool with 11 games remaining.

Although Klopp and Guardiola also faced off during spells with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich respectively, their time in the Premier League elevated their battle for supremacy to new heights.

The pair have met 15 times in the Premier League since 2016, with Klopp earning four victories and Guardiola claiming five wins.

However, beating Liverpool at Anfield in front of a crowd is one of the few feats still to elude Guardiola as City boss.

The English champions only victory away to Liverpool since 2003 came behind closed doors three years ago.

With so much at stake this weekend, Guardiola will have been shifting restlessly under his duvet this week as he plots one more memorable moment at Klopp’s expense.

Arsenal have no margin for errorDeclan Rice has warned Arsenal they have no margin for error in the chase to win a first Premier League title since 2004.

After finishing 2023 with damaging defeats against West Ham and Fulham, Mikel Arteta’s men have responded with seven successive league victories.

Sheffield United were crushed 6-0 at Bramall Lane on Monday, moving Mikel Arteta’s third placed side back within two points of Liverpool.

With Liverpool and City meeting on Sunday, Arsenal can temporarily seize pole position if they beat Brentford at the Emirates Stadium 24 hours earlier.

“It has been a hell of a comeback since the Christmas period, when we lost two in a row,” Arsenal midfielder Rice said.

“But it is the Premier League, you need to be on it every single game. You can’t have any slip-ups.

“If you look at the two other teams at the top, they don’t look like they are going to slip up anytime soon.”

Villa fuelled by European dreamsAston Villa face top four rivals Tottenham on Sunday bidding to take a huge step towards playing in the Champions League for the first time in 41 years.

Villa’s unexpectedly impressive campaign has raised hopes of a return to Europe’s elite club competition, a level they last played at as holders in 1982-83 after Tony Barton’s team won the tournament the previous year.

Over four decades later, Unai Emery’s fourth-placed side are five points ahead of Tottenham in fifth and a victory at Villa Park would put them firmly on track to finish in the top four.

“The Premier League is 38 matches and we are now in the fourth position and it is a very good opportunity to try to compete,” Emery said.

“If we want to raise our levels, playing important games, it is important to play matches like this week.”

Manchester City underlined the vast gulf in quality between themselves and Manchester United on Sunday as Liverpool showed their support for absent team-mate Luis Diaz, whose parents were kidnapped in Colombia. Old Trafford paid tribute to late United great Bobby Charlton ahead of kick-off, with supporters unfurling a banner that read: “The finest English footballer the world has ever seen”. But memories of past glories failed to translate onto the pitch, with the home team thoroughly outplayed by the champions, who did not have to get out of second gear in their 3-0 win.

Champions City made most of the early running and were awarded a penalty after VAR spotted a foul on Rodri by Rasmus Hojlund as the ball was crossed into the area from a free-kick.

It was the first spot-kick Manchester City have ever been awarded at Old Trafford in the Premier League in the 27th meeting between the teams.

Erling Haaland stepped up to tuck home from the spot, his 12th goal of the season in all competitions.

City goalkeeper Ederson saved a Scott McTominay pile-driver before Andre Onana produced heroics at the other end when Haaland appeared certain to head home.

But the Norwegian forward made no mistake just after the break, thumping home a header from Bernardo Silva‘s cross.

Phil Foden made it 3-0 with 10 minutes remaining after he was set up by Haaland.

Liverpool tribute

Earlier, Liverpool swept Nottingham Forest aside by the same scoreline.

Goals from Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez before the break and Mohamed Salah‘s second-half effort ensured Jurgen Klopp’s side maintain their 100 percent home record in the Premier League this season.

Jota held aloft Diaz’s number seven shirt after scoring — the Colombian did not feature in Liverpool’s squad following the kidnapping incident in his home country.

Colombia President Gustavo Petro said on Saturday that the winger’s mother had been rescued but the search remained ongoing for his father.

“Luis was with us in the hotel then he went home,” Jota told the BBC. “It’s a very hard situation and I don’t know how anyone would react if it happened to you.

“He was going to play. I played instead of him, and I showed him his shirt to show we’re with him and we hope everything works out.”

Liverpool finished the day fourth in the table, behind leaders Tottenham, Arsenal and City.

High-flying Aston Villa, in fifth spot, won their 12th consecutive home game in the Premier League, beating struggling Luton 3-1.

Unai Emery’s side made light work of their opponents, with goals from John McGinn and Moussa Diaby giving them the upper hand before Luton captain Tom Lockyer put through his own net.

“For me it is still a long process here and I will want to work to improve as always,” Emery told Sky Sports.

“Of course I am happy but still being serious, serious in the way I want to build here and improve more.”

Brighton lost further ground after their sparkling start to the season.

The south coast club took a 1-0 lead through Evan Ferguson, but Fulham levelled through midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal of the game as Everton beat West Ham 1-0 to give themselves breathing space above the relegation zone.
