Lebanon said 18 people were killed on Friday (June 19, 2026) in Israeli airstrikes in the south, while Israel’s military reported its first soldiers killed there since the sealing of a U.S.-Iran deal to halt the war in West Asia, including in Lebanon.

Israel had said it was striking Hezbollah targets overnight and into the morning, while the Iran-backed militant group said it was attacking Israeli forces around the southern town of Nabatieh.

“The intensive Israeli airstrikes carried out from midnight until this morning have prevented the evacuation of the martyrs and wounded, and have resulted in a preliminary toll of 18 martyrs and 33 wounded” in at least 10 villages and towns, the Lebanese Health Ministry said.

The strikes were the deadliest since Iran and the United States agreed to halt the wider war in West Asia on Monday.

The Israeli military, meanwhile, said Lieutenant Colonel Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon had “fallen in combat” along with three other soldiers it did not immediately identify.

In a separate statement it reported a reserve officer was severely wounded “as a result of an explosive drone impact in southern Lebanon”, with four other soldiers lightly injured in the incident.

Israeli hardliners’s reply to U.S.

The soldiers’ deaths prompted a furious reaction from far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

“With all due respect to the Americans, Israel must make it clear to the entire world that the blood of our sons and the security of our citizens are not up for bargaining. All of Lebanon must burn,” Ben Gvir said in a statement.

U.S. officials including President Donald Trump have expressed frustration at Israel’s campaign in Lebanon, which it has pursued in spite of the US’s negotiations with Iran, as well as a separate ceasefire agreed in April that was meant to halt the fighting there.

The Israeli military had said in an earlier statement that it was carrying out strikes in response to “repeated violations of the ceasefire” by Hezbollah.

“During the night, the army struck and continues to strike Hezbollah terrorists and infrastructure in several areas in southern Lebanon,” it said.

Hezbollah said early on Friday (June 19) that it had targeted Israeli troops “with a barrage of rockets and mortar shells” near the Ali al-Taher hills, a strategic feature overlooking the town of Nabatieh.

It had also reported attacking Israeli tanks, saying forces “consisting of an armoured platoon and an infantry platoon (tried) to infiltrate towards the northern side of the Ali al-Taher hills”.

“The clashes are still ongoing,” it said.

Hezbollah drew Lebanon into the war in West Asia in early March by attacking Israel to avenge the killing of Iran’s supreme leader at the start of the U.S.-Israeli military campaign.

Israel retaliated with broad strikes across Lebanon and by launching a ground invasion in the south, which borders Israel and has long been under Hezbollah’s sway.

The hostilities have continued despite the U.S.-Iran agreement.

On Thursday (June 18), Hezbollah said it had been fighting Israeli forces attempting to advance from the town of Arnoun towards the outskirts of Kfar Tibnit, also near Nabatieh.

  5. The Palestinian Hamas group’s October 7, 2023 attack, called the ‘Al-Aqsa Flood’, had targeted Israeli border towns, sparking a fierce West Asia showdown that continues till date. The Lebanese Hezbollah group – also backed by Iran-later entered the war in support of Hamas.

Netanyahu’s Message For People Of Lebanon After Deadly Strikes: 10 Points https://artifex.news/netanyahus-message-for-people-of-lebanon-after-deadly-strikes-10-points-6635347/ Tue, 24 Sep 2024 01:43:34 +0000 https://artifex.news/netanyahus-message-for-people-of-lebanon-after-deadly-strikes-10-points-6635347/ Read More “Netanyahu’s Message For People Of Lebanon After Deadly Strikes: 10 Points” »

Hours after Israeli strikes killed nearly 500 people in Lebanon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reached out to the Lebanese people and asked them not to become “human shields” for the Hezbollah.

Here are top 10 points in this big story:

  1. Israel’s war is not with the Lebanese people, but with Hezbollah, which has been placing missiles in their homes, said Netanyahu in a video message shared online, and vowed to take out those weapons out to ensure the safety of Israelis.
  2. “I have a message for the people of Lebanon: Israel’s war is not with you, it’s with Hezbollah. For too long, Hezbollah has been using you as human shields. It placed rockets in your living rooms and missiles in your garage. Those rockets and missiles are aimed directly at our cities, directly at our citizens. To defend our people against Hezbollah strikes, we must take out those weapons,” said the Israeli Prime Minister.
  3. Netanyahu said the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) has warned the Lebanese people to get out of harms’ way and that they must take it seriously. The Lebanese must not endanger their own lives for the Hezbollah cause, he urged.
  4. “Don’t let Hezbollah endanger your lives and the lives of your loved ones. Don’t let Hezbollah endanger Lebanon. Please, get out of harm’s way now. Once our operation is finished, you can come back safely to your homes,” said Netanyahu.
  5. The latest strikes come as the violence has shifted from Israel’s southern frontier with Gaza to its northern border with Lebanon. Hezbollah, which runs Lebanon, has been exchanging fire with Israel in support of the Palestinian group Hamas since the war began.
  6. Called “Operation Northern Arrows” by the IDF, the Israeli strikes hit southern and eastern Lebanon. Beirut faced a “targeted strike” as well.
  7. The Hezbollah-led health ministry in Lebanon pegged the casualties at 492 until Monday night. These included 35 children and 58 women. At least 1,645 were wounded while thousands of families had been displaced, said Health Minister Firass Abiad.
  8. Yesterday’s attacks – which marked the deadliest day of cross-border violence since the Gaza war began last year – were condemned by Arab states and other global powers. They have urged Israel and Hezbollah to step back from the brink of all-out war, though both defiant, refusing to leave a single inch for the other.
  9. Ahead of the attacks, Hezbollah said yesterday it was in a “new phase” of confrontation and that it had fired rockets at Israeli military sites in retaliation for earlier Israeli strikes. The commander of an elite Hezbollah unit was killed in one such attack on southern Beirut on Friday.
  10. The cross-border violence follows a deadly string of explosions of pagers and walkie-talkies across Lebanon, which Hezbollah has blamed on Israel. Those blasts last week killed at least 39 people and wounded nearly 3,000.
