New Zealand scripted history on Sunday as they clinched the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 title. It was New Zealand’s maiden T20 World Cup title, men’s and women’s both. The White Ferns thrashed South Africa by 32 runs in Dubai on Sunday. South Africa, playing their second successive final, sent New Zealand in to bat and the Sophie Devine-led side thrived under pressure to post an above par 158/5. Later, the Proteas were restricted to 126/9 and once again failed to clinch the title.

As New Zealand won the coveted the ICC trophy, let’s discuss the whopping prize money which they took home.

Earlier this year, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced a raise of 134% in the winner’s prize money of this edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup. So, the champions New Zealand got a huge cash prize of USD 2.34 million (Rs 19.6 crore).

Apart from this, the first runners-up South Africa were also awarded a cash-prize of USD 1.17 million (Rs 9.8 crore).

Cash prize for India as well

In this edition, ICC also announced that the prize money will not only be limited to the winner and the runners-up but also to the semi-finalists and the three best teams in the group stage. As per that rule, semi-finalists Australia and West Indies got USD 675,000 (Rs 5.7 crore) each.

However, the group stage rankings are still not confirmed but with two wins in four matches, Team India is highly likely to finish at No 6 and fetch the prize money of Rs USD 270,000 (Rs 2.25 crore). The same prize money will be given to all the three best teams of the group stage.

It turned out to be a historic Sunday for New Zealand cricket as the White Ferns got their hands on the ICC trophy hours after the men recorded their first Test win in India after 36 years.

New Zealand’s golden generation, led by the inspirational Sophie Devine, will have one last chance to lay hands on a global ICC trophy when it meets a gritty South Africa in the summit clash of the T20 World Cup which is set to throw a new champion, here Sunday. New Zealand’s women’s team had won the ODI World Cup back in 2000 but none of the current squad members were part of that historic title triumph. Before this event began, New Zealand were in the trenches having lost 10 matches on the trot in the format but under Devine this bunch, comprising of the venerable Suzie Bates and the assuring Amelia Kerr, has done wonders, bringing the side in contention for the ultimate prize.

It is most probably the last time the Black Shirts will have Devine, Bates and Lea Tahuhu playing of the national side in a global tournament.

Devine, 35, has more than 7000 runs under her belt in white-ball formats while the 37-year-old Bates has more than 10,000 runs to her name.

Pacer Tahuhu, 34, has 112 wickets in ODIs and 93 in T20Is.

They won’t leave any stone unturned to ensure that they have a World Cup trophy in their cabinet.

South Africa on the other side will be equally determined to complete the unfinished business as they had lost the 2023 World Cup final to Australia at home. They have an opportunity to erase painful memories as they had lost by a mere 19 runs in the close contest.

New Zealand have one or other player to rise the occasion in the tournament and in the semifinal against the West Indies, if they failed to set a target big enough to daunt the free-flowing Caribbean batters, their bowlers responded with tidy spells throughout the game to eke out a memorable win.

Kerr’s wicket tally has swelled to 12 in the tournament as she found apt support from the other end in the likes of Eden Carson (8), Rosemary Mair (7) and the experienced Lea Tahuhu.

New Zealand announced their intentions with a big win against India first up and followed that up with consistent performances across departments.

A 60-run loss to Australia, arguably the strongest team in the competition, notwithstanding, the Kiwis weren’t unnerved as they went on to pip the West Indies in the final over of their low-scoring semifinal to make their third final.

When the tournament began towards the end of the first decade of this century, New Zealand appeared to be the team to beat as they made two consecutive finals but got pipped by England and Australia once each.

Bates and Devine, the survivors from those campaigns, will thus get a third crack in winning the first ICC trophy for New Zealand in white-ball cricket since 2000 when the men’s team won the Champions Trophy in Kenya.

But against them will be the formidable South Africa who scripted history of sorts to have stopped the all-dominating Australian team from reaching their eighth consecutive final in the last 15 years and seven editions of the T20 World Cup.

If New Zealand has Kerr topping the charts for most successful bowlers, South Africa have two of their top-order batters — Laura Wolvaardt (190 runs) and Tazmin Brits (170 runs) — lodged at the top of the batting charts in this tournament.

South Africa’s all-round might will pose the sternest challenge as the Proteas side is coming off a comprehensive eight-wicket thrashing of Australia, having restricted them to a mere 135/5 and knocked off the target with more than two overs to spare.

While a lot will depend on the pair of Wolvaardt and Brits at the top, SA will need the likes of Anneke Bosch and Marizanne Kapp to chip in with the bat too.

Similarly, Nonkululeko Mlaba (10 wickets) would also need the rest of the bowlers to replicate their performance from the semifinal, in which they collectively kept it tight to not allow Australia to get away with the bat.

Squads:

New Zealand: Sophie Devine (captain), Suzie Bates, Eden Carson, Isabella Gaze (wk), Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Fran Jonas, Leigh Kasperek, Amelia Kerr, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Molly Penfold, Georgia Plimmer, Hannah Rowe, Lea Tahuhu.

South Africa: Laura Wolvaardt (c), Anneke Bosch, Tazmin Brits, Nadine de Klerk, Annerie Dercksen, Mieke de Ridder (wk), Ayanda Hlubi, Sinalo Jafta (wk), Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Sune Luus, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Seshnie Naidu, Tumi Sekhukhune, Chloe Tryon.

Time: 7:30PM IST.

Australia will start as overwhelming favourites in their quest for an unprecedented eighth final appearance when they take on South Africa in the semi-final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Dubai on Thursday. Australia have now made it to the semi-finals of the global T20 tournament in all its nine editions held so far since 2009 in England. The six-time champions take on the Proteas women in a last-four clash in what seems to be a repeat of the summit showdown during the 2023 edition in South Africa, which the Southern Stars won by 19 runs.

Going by pure statistic, South Africa are no match for Australia who have won nine out of the 10 WT20I games, with the former’s only win coming in January this year.

The head-to-head record at Women’s T20 World Cup is even more intimidating as Australia have won all the seven encounters. The best part about the current Australian team is the core which has remained intact for years now with only Meg Lanning retiring from international cricket.

All the 10 others, who played in the 2023 final are here with the likes of Alyssa Healy, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Ashleigh Gardner being the pillars of the team.

On a slow Dubai track, the depth in batting has been Australia’s biggest strength, with Phoebe Litchfield and Annabel Sutherland capable of muscling the balls to the fence. For South Africa, one of their biggest assets has been slow left-arm orthodox Nonkululeko Mlaba, who has so far taken 10 wickets in four group league games.

Skipper Laura Wolvaardt, her opening partner Taznim Brits and the seasoned Marizanne Kapp are all match-winners in their own rights but they have always come up short against Healy and company.

Hopefully, the Proteas women would be eighth time lucky against familiar foes in their bid to win the maiden global T20 trophy.

South Africa vs West Indie LIVE Updates, Women’s T20 World Cup: South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt won the toss and opted to bowl against West Indies in their Women’s T20 World Cup match in Dubai. On her decision to invite West Indies to bat, Wolvaardt said the wicket is fresh and that stats favour chasing at this venue. Both teams lost their warm-up games in the lead-up to the tournament. However, the Proteas Women finished as the runners-up in the 2023 T20 World Cup and will be looking to carry their form into this tournament after a 2-1 series win away against Pakistan. They have also won three of their last four T20Is against West Indies. (Live Scorecard)

Speaking after the loss, South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt was appreciative of her team’s batting in the match.

“To lose is a bit disappointing. But the character that the group has shown over the last two days was absolutely amazing. To concede 500-something runs on day one, I don’t think many people thought it would get all the way to the last session on day four.

“So, just the absolute grit and determination that every single batter had, going out there to see it through until the end was amazing. I think it’ll do a lot of good things for this group,” she said.

On her experience of captaining the side in the last two Tests versus Australia and India, she said: “Obviously, being at the WACA was all about pace, bounce, swing, and nip. Whereas, this was all about the spinners and sort of navigating that. I think captaincy-wise, it was quite tricky knowing which fields to set. They had a lot of funky fields that were really hard to bat against. Their spinners were accurate as well.

“I’ve learnt a lot as a player, spending time out there in the middle, batting. It’s going to help my captaincy as well, just to have observed what they were doing for more than 300 balls and just being out there. I think it’s probably the most memorable of the three Test matches that I’ve played, just because of the character that we showed.”

About the Chennai crowd, she added: “To have that many people at a Test match, was amazing. It’s awesome how supportive they are of the opposition as well, cheering and clapping when any of us sort of reached a milestone. It keeps it entertaining as well.

“I think the third day felt like a long time when I was batting out there, but it was nice to see them singing songs, which was quite funny. I think there was a (chorus of) ‘Laura is scared of Deepti’ at one stage!”

Despite South African skipper Laura Wolvaardt’s (122, 314b, 16×4) valiant century, India romped home to a ten-wicket on the final day of the one-off Test at the MAC Stadium in Chennai on Monday.

On an overcast morning, South Africa resumed on 232 for two and needed another 105 runs to make India bat again. Though the odds were stacked against the Proteas on a fourth-day pitch with uneven bounce, the visitors showed great character to take the match into the final session after conceding a 337-run lead on the third day.

Wolvaardt, batting on 93 overnight, flicked Sneh Rana to the fine leg fence to move to 99 and then took a single through the leg-side off Renuka Singh to complete her maiden Test century. Though she started scratchily on Sunday, the 25-year-old right-hander stuck to her gameplan to score her third century of the tour following her twin centuries in the ODIs.

Deepthi Sharma gave India an opening at the other end when she had Marizane Kapp leg-before caught on the backfoot to an off-break. Soon, Sneh got into the act, removing Delmari Tucker, who was dismissed for a pair, caught at covers. The off-spinner got her 10th wicket of the match when she had Sinalo Jafta caught at slip.

Wolvaardt’s vigil ended shortly before lunch when she played down the wrong line to a delivery from left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad that kept low and was trapped in front.

Needing just five more wickets, India would have felt it was inching closer towards an innings win, but Nadine de Klerk (61) frustrated the hosts with her gritty stay in the middle, scoring a patient half-century.

While India kept pegging away, taking three more wickets in the second session, de Klerk held fort at the other end, grinding out the bowling attack, as South Africa managed just 34 runs in 29 overs.

In the final session, de Klerk cut loose, finding a few boundaries by employing the sweep shot to get to her half-century and helping her side wipe out the deficit. By the time Rajeshwari bowled her, South Africa had a lead of 35 runs, which seemed improbable when India amassed 603 for six in the first innings.

Indian openers Shefali Verma and Subha Sathesh then swiftly knocked off the 37-run target to help the home side to its third straight Test win after victories against England and Australia last year.

Opener Laura Wolvaardt will lead the 15-member South Africa women’s team in the upcoming three-match T20 International series against India to be played at Chennai from July 5.

Chloe Tryon, who missed the ODIs and one-off Test, is the only addition to the squad as she marks her return from a back injury.

All-rounders Delmi Tucker and Nondumiso Shangase will leave the touring group following the ODIs and the one-off Test, which South Africa lost by 10 wickets on Monday.

South Africa were also whitewashed by India in the three-match ODI series which was played before the one-off Test.

“We’re excited with the 15-player squad that has been selected for the T20I series. We also have Chloe back in the team after recovering from an injury.”She brings a lot of experience to the team and we can’t wait to see her back on the field,” South Africa head coach Dillon du Preez said in a statement issued by Cricket South Africa.

“We have our last three T20I matches against India. This will give us some time to look at one or two options before we go home and start our final preparation for the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh,” he added.

South Africa women Convenor of Selectors, Clinton du Preez added: “In selecting the squad for the upcoming T20I series against India, we focused on maintaining consistency, keeping a largely similar group to build on our strengths and cohesion.

“This approach allows us to refine our strategies and enhance team dynamics, which are crucial as we prepare for the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh.

“Our goal is to provide a platform for our players to gain valuable experience and showcase their skills, ensuring we are well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

“The return of Chloe Tryon is a significant addition, and we are confident that this squad will perform with the determination and excellence that define Proteas Women cricket.”

The first T20I will be played on July 5, followed by matches on July 7 and 9 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

South Africa Women T20I Squad: Laura Wolvaardt (c), Anneke Bosch, Tazmin Brits, Nadine de Klerk, Annerie Dercksen, Mieke de Ridder, Sinalo Jafta, Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, Suneì Luus, Eliz-Mari Marx, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Tumi Sekhukhune, Chloe Tryon.
