Senuran Muthusamy showed his batting prowess while Kyle Verreynne was defiant in his approach as South Africa frustrated Indian bowling unit to reach 316 for six at tea on day two of the second Test in Guwahati on Sunday (November 23, 2025).

Left-hander Muthusamy (56 batting off 131 balls) looked solid in defense en route his third Test fifty and also added unbroken 70 runs for the seventh wicket with keeper-batter Verreynne (38 batting, 94 balls), who played some edgy shots but then settled down nicely over the course of time.

The Proteas took heavy roller in the morning which indicates that initially it would play well and then quickly start crumbling by the start of the third day.

The Barsapara track became a quintessential 22 yards from the throwback era where it flattened out considerably making India’s two finger spinners Washington Sundar (0/45 in 21 overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (1/47 in 18 overs) look pedestrian through the second morning.

What became a problem for the finger spinners was lack of zip off the surface making it comfortable for the batters.

Muthusamy defended well on the front-foot and also played some flowing drives.

It is not known whether Indian team management and their data analyst had done any homework on Muthusamy, who as recently as second Test in the preceding series against Pakistan scored 89 not out in a winning cause and enjoys an average of 46 plus in the traditional format.

He did survive by going for DRS when he was adjudged leg before off Jadeja’s bowling as the TV replays showed that the ball had touched the gloves.

The best chance for India after Verreynne and Muthusamy cautiously saw out Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj’s first spell was Kuldeep Yadav’s variations on a slow and unresponsive deck.

But unlike first day, Kuldeep wasn’t getting the drift in his first spell of five overs and Pant replaced him with Washington, who was rendered ineffective from the start.

Bangladesh cricket team fast bowler Hasan Mahmud was involved in a bizarre incident during Day 2 of the first Test match against South Africa in Dhaka on Tuesday. During the 69th over of the South Africa innings, Dane Piedt slammed a low full-toss directly back to Mahmud who deflected it off his right hand onto the stumps. While Kyle Verreynne was safe on the non-striker’s end, Piedt decided to go for a risky run before realising his mistake and turning back midway. Mahmud went for the direct hit on the batter’s end but ended up hitting Piedt with his throw to leave the Bangladesh fielders disappointed.

A century from wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne powered South Africa to 308 all out and a first-innings lead of 202 on Tuesday in the first Test against Bangladesh in Mirpur.

Kagiso Rabada then took two quick wickets as Bangladesh were reduced to 19-2 at tea on the second day, still needing 183 to avoid an innings defeat.

Shadman Islam was first to go, caught at short leg in the third over.

Three balls later, Mominul Haque edged and Wiaan Mulder took a sharp catch at third slip.

Verreynne was last man out in South Africa’s first innings after scoring eight fours and two sixes in his 114.

He put on 119 for the seventh wicket with Mulder, who made 54, in reply to Bangladesh’s first innings of 106.

It was South Africa’s highest seventh-wicket stand against Bangladesh, after the pair resumed at 140-6 at the start of play.

Dane Piedt, dismissed lbw for 32 by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, partnered Verreynne in a stand of 66 runs for the ninth wicket.

Bangladesh quick bowler Hasan Mahmud took two wickets in two balls in the 65th over, the only spot of brightness in a morning session where South Africa added 103.

A sharp delivery on off stump induced Mulder to edge to Shadman Islam at slip, then Hasan sent Keshav Maharaj‘s off stump flying with a reverse-swinging delivery that ducked back late to beat the bat.

Hasan finished with 3-66 and Mehidy 2-63, finally wrapping up the innings when Verreynne was stumped after facing 144 balls.

On Monday, South Africa quick bowler Kagiso Rabada had become the fastest to reach 300 Test wickets as Bangladesh collapsed after winning the toss and choosing to bat.

Rabada reached the landmark in 11,817 balls, beating the previous best by Pakistan’s Waqar Younis of 12,602 deliveries.

Left-arm spinner Taijul Islam passed 200 Test wickets as he finished with 5-122, only the second Bangladeshi to achieve the feat after Shakib Al Hasan

Bangladesh have never beaten South Africa in a Test and second of the two-match series begins in Chattogram on October 29.

Bangladesh were battling to save the first Test against South Africa on Tuesday after reaching 101-3 at stumps and still needing another 101 to avoid an innings defeat. Mahmudul Hasan Joy (38) and Mushfiqur Rahim (31) were unbeaten at the end of play in Mirpur. Their 42-run stand for the fourth wicket also made Mushfiqur the first Bangladeshi to cross 6,000 career Test runs. South Africa were all out for 308 in their first innings of 308, which secured a 202-run lead for the visitors thanks to wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne‘s century.

“It is probably the toughest conditions I have played under in terms of heat and humidity,” Verreynne said.

“Ninety percent of that innings was just against spin. Things happen quickly. You don’t have much time to reset from a concentration point of view. This was certainly my most rewarding innings.”

Bangladesh lost two early wickets to quick Kagiso Rabada in reply with Shadman Islam first to go, caught at short leg for one in the third over.

Three balls later, Mominul Haque edged and Wiaan Mulder took a sharp catch at third slip for naught, leaving the hosts dangling on 19-2 before tea.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto fell lbw to Keshav Maharaj after a gruelling 23 off 49 balls.

Bangladesh would have lost another wicket off the last of the day when Mahmudul went for a wild slog and missed the ball, avoiding a stumping in the nick of time.

Verreynne was last man out in South Africa’s first innings after scoring eight fours and two sixes in his 114.

He put on 119 for the seventh wicket with Mulder, who made 54, in reply to Bangladesh’s first innings of 106.

Dane Piedt, dismissed lbw for 32 by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, partnered Verreynne in a stand of 66 runs for the ninth wicket.

‘Sticking to the basics’

Bangladesh quick bowler Hasan Mahmud took two wickets in two balls in the 65th over, the only spot of brightness in a morning session where South Africa added 103.

“Test cricket is like that,” Hasan said when asked how the hosts had managed to concede 200 runs for the last four wickets.

“In those situations, the focus for bowlers shifts to containing the flow of runs and building pressure on the batsmen. It’s all about sticking to the basics.”

Hasan finished with 3-66 and Mehidy 2-63, finally wrapping up the innings when Verreynne was stumped after facing 144 balls.

Rabada on Monday become the fastest to reach 300 Test wickets as Bangladesh collapsed after winning the toss and choosing to bat.
