Uncapped Kwena Maphaka has been added to South Africa’s Test squad after fast-bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the second Test against Sri Lanka and the upcoming all-format series against Pakistan due to a groin injury. South Africa moved up to second place in the World Test Championship table, only behind India, after their emphatic 233 win over Sri Lanka at the Kingsmead Cricket Stadium on Saturday. The Proteas bowling attack, spearheaded by Marco Jansen, ripped through the Sri Lankan batting line-up in the second innings as they bundled their opponents for a mere score of 42. Jansen became the first left-arm seamer to take a ten-wicket haul for South Africa since their re-admission into cricket in 1991.

After being put to bat in the first innings, the Proteas struggled to get going. As wickets fell one after another on end, skipper Temba Bavuma’s resilient 70 run knock propelled his side to 191/10.

With their first innings score not passing the 200 run mark, the Proteas bowlers took the field under immense pressure on Day-2 and stopped up brilliantly. Marco Jansen’s brilliant 6.5 over spell saw the Left arm pacer scalp seven wickets. Kagiso Rabada (1) and Gerald Coetzee (2) helped Jansen in bundling the visitors out for 42, giving them a 149 run lead.

Tristan Stubbs (122) and Bavuma (113) recorded the highest fourth-wicket partnership for South Africa in Tests against Sri Lanka with a 249-run stand and broke the record of 192 set by AB de Villiers and Jacques Kallis back in 2012 at the Newlands in Cape Town. With the score at 366/5, the Proteas declared their innings giving the visitors a massive target of 516.

Despite the best efforts of Dinesh Chandimal and skipper Dhananjay de Silva, the visitors fell well short as they were bundled out for 282 giving the hosts a memorable victory.

“Always dreamed of five, but never thought I will get 10, but this is what you work for. It hasn’t sunk in yet (talking about his first innings performance). In the second innings, we thought the surface was a bit flatter, slow and low but getting 11 wickets is a dream come true,” said Jansen after being awarded the player of the match honour.

Mumbai Indians acquired the services of 17-year-old South African speedster Kwena Maphaka as a replacement for Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Madushanka, who was bought by MI for Rs 4.6 crore, suffered a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s second ODI against Bangladesh earlier this month. Meanwhile, Maphaka will link up with fellow South African and MI head coach Mark Boucher. The 17-year-old caught everyone’s eye during U19 World Cup at home this year, scalping 21 wickets at an average of 9.71.

Maphaka arrived at MI’s team hotel in Mumbai but was taken aback by a tricky question from his mother.

In a video posted by MI, the admin posed a question on behlaf of Maphaka’s mom, who asked how he would manage his studies.

Responding to the question, The 17-year-old went on to say he would be able to pull it off.

“Yes, it’s definitely going to be a difficult time. But it’s a lot of extra lessons and a lot of hardwork,” he said in the video.

On becoming MI’s latest acquisition, Maphaka added: “It feels really good. Definitely something unexpected. But I’m really happy to be here. It’s a beautiful city.”

Maphaka’s mom also expressed her excitement on the 17-year-old joining the franchise.

“It’s an honour. We are very blessed to have Kwena be a part of such a big family of Mumbai Indians and I hope he is going to fit in and be welcomed,” she said in the video.

Maphaka’s T20 numbers read 13 wickets in nine games at an economy of 6.71, including a four-wicket haul.

“Maphaka already is capable of generating serious pace and has a very mean bouncer that is known to hurry the batters up. He debuted for the South Africa U19 team at 15 & has already played in two U19 World Cups,” said MI in a media release.

“He is capable of touching speeds of 140kph, and his death bowling and yorkers were a standout too at the U19 World Cup earlier this year.

“He will share the dressing room with two of the best bowlers in world cricket – Lasith Malinga, bowling coach and Jasprit Bumrah putting him on a path of learning, development and building on that knowledge.” MI plays its IPL 2024 opening match versus last season’s runner-up, Gujarat Titans, in Ahmedabad on March 24 under new skipper Hardik Pandya.

The 23-year-old Lankan pacer suffered a hamstring injury in the just-concluded ODI series in Bangladesh, which the visitors lost 1-2. Meanwhile, the 17-year-old Maphaka came into the limelight after being adjudged the Player of the Tournament during the U19 World Cup at home this year, scalping 21 wickets at an average of 9.71.

He is rated very highly by Proteas legend Allan Donald.

Warrier Replaces Shami In GT

Gujarat Titans have roped in Kerala medium-pacer Sandeep Warrier as a replacement for injured senior Indian seamer Mohammed Shami, the Indian Premier League said on Wednesday.

Shami recently underwent a successful Achilles heel surgery in London for his right heel problem.

He is expected to be undergoing rehabilitation for almost the whole of IPL 2024, thus ruling him out of the entire event.

Shami has not played competitive cricket since last year’s ODI World Cup final here, which India lost by six wickets against Australia.

As for Warrier, the 32-year-old has played five IPL matches since 2019, grabbing two wickets at an economy of 7.88.

“Shami – the veteran Indian pacer – recently successfully underwent surgery for his right heel problem and is currently recovering,” read a statement from IPL. “His replacement, Sandeep Warrier, has so far played 5 IPL matches and will join GT for his base price of INR 50 Lac.” GT will be his fourth IPL franchise, having previously played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians.

GT will play their IPL 2024 opener against Mumbai Indians on March 24.
