Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani wants premier spinner Kuldeep Yadav to rediscover his best form with the franchise’s playoff hopes hanging by a thread following the loss to Chennai Super Kings.

Defending a below par 155, DC were able to apply some pressure in the powerplay but Samson smashed Kuldeep for three sixes in his three overs that went for 34 runs. Kuldeep was brought in to get the breakthrough, instead he ended up releasing the pressure on the opposition. Eventually, CSK coasted to the target in 17.3 overs.

Kuldeep’s overall IPL economy rate has hovered around eight, but this season it has crossed the 10-run mark while the wickets too have dried up, with the spinner managing only seven scalps in 10 matches.

“We would ideally want Kuldeep to be better than this. But we will rally around him. He’s been somebody who’s been a part of this side for many many years. He’s done well for many many years. He can turn this around,” said Badani.

Even captain Axar Patel said that he “missed his partner” in a reference to Kuldeep.

Kuldeep had also missed a majority of the games during the preceding T20 World Cup.

Asked if he is struggling with form or rhythm, Badani said: “I think it’s more the case of just about somebody’s striking form. He hasn’t struck peak form yet. He hasn’t bowled at the speeds that he would normally bowl. And I think it’s a question of time. I mean, we have the faith in him.”

“And more than anything else, it’s crunch time for us. It’s quite simple for us. It’s more like a knockout tournament for us right now. We have to win 4 out 4. And with 4 out 4, we still have a chance to qualify.”

Redemption calls for self-belief, for both men and women https://artifex.news/article70186062-ece/ Tue, 21 Oct 2025 19:10:00 +0000 https://artifex.news/article70186062-ece/ Read More “Redemption calls for self-belief, for both men and women” »

It is unusual for a player to take the blame for a team’s defeat, as Smriti Mandhana did after India’s loss to England in the Women’s World Cup. A defeat by a small margin, four runs in this case, always sets off speculation on where those runs might have come from in the course of an innings. Ignored singles? Missed boundary? Luck?

Mandhana made 88 in 94 balls. When she was fourth out in the 42nd over, India were still sitting pretty. They needed 55 in 53 balls, and with wickets in hand that was a comfortable target.

Then things went haywire. The team’s confidence seemed to ooze out or turn into overconfidence. “We could have done with better shot selection,” admitted Mandhana, “It started from me, so I will take it on myself…” About being caught at long off, she said, significantly, “The emotions took over for that one…”

That is understandable. Emotions are part of sport. There are two ways to handle these — either by controlling them and making them work for you, or by giving in to them and preparing for the inevitable disappointment.

Stay put

There is a simple rule in white ball chases, which the great players are conscious of: when you are settled in, bat on till the end. Don’t leave it to the next person. The opposition needs only to get a foot in the door before kicking it open. Especially teams like Australia, multi-champions who have been in this situation before and know that one wicket could lead to another and then yet another. For that is the rule for the bowling team: one wicket can make all the difference and alter the flow of the match.

India were so near and yet so far in the ODI World Cup in 2017 and the T20 version in 2020. If they fail here now, it will mean that some of the senior players might not get another chance.

That both the men’s and women’s teams lost on Sunday, but can redeem themselves on Thursday is one of those quirks of scheduling. But in a larger sense, the Indian men in Australia and the women against New Zealand in their next match can get closer to rendering the defeat purely academic. Early defeats can actually be a spur, as the men showed when they won the 2011 World Cup at home.

The women can make it to the semifinals if they beat New Zealand. If they don’t, the ifs and buts must work in their favour. This means select teams must lose their matches. Leaving it to the kindness of rivals is never a safe way in sports, but when teams perform just below the optimum level, that is the only way.

Missing a trick

Did the women miss a trick by benching Jemimah Rodrigues, like the men did by not playing Kuldeep Yadav? There is no guarantee that different selections would have led to different results. In the case of the women, bringing in Renuka Singh to strengthen the bowling made cricketing sense, and acknowledged that although white ball cricket is seen as a batter’s game, taking wickets is the best way to check runs.

Kuldeep Yadav, India’s highest-ranked ODI bowler remains, in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, their most likely wicket taker. With two finger spinners and a medium pacer among three all rounders in the Perth ODI, India’s balance was slightly askew.

In sport you can make the wrong choices in team selection and still come out on top; the reverse is equally true. But there was — and continues to be — sound cricketing reasons to play Kuldeep in Australia. If your first seven or eight batters don’t get the runs it is hardly fair to expect the remaining to do so. Kuldeep is unlikely to score a fifty; he might even be a tad expensive. But he will get wickets, and that’s what matters.

Admittedly columnists have the advantage of hindsight — we make our calls after the match while the coach has to do so before the toss. But logic, rather than a defensive mindset should decide the line-up.

Redemption might be round the corner for both India teams, though. In both cases, however, they need greater self-belief.

‘Not easy to sit out’: Shardul backs Kuldeep, Easwaran after missing England Test series https://artifex.news/article69949243-ece/ Mon, 18 Aug 2025 21:54:00 +0000 https://artifex.news/article69949243-ece/ Read More “‘Not easy to sit out’: Shardul backs Kuldeep, Easwaran after missing England Test series” »

After the conclusion of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 between England and India, which ended in 2-2 draw, all-rounder Shardul Thakur reflected on the disappointment of his teammates, spinner Kuldeep Yadav and opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, who did not get a chance to play in the five-Test series.

Kuldeep Yadav has not featured in Test cricket since the first Test against New Zealand in October 2024.

Since his debut in the longest format of the game in 2017, he has played just 13 games, taking 56 scalps at an average of 22.16 and four five-wicket hauls.

The decision not to play Kuldeep has attracted criticism as he is a wicket-taking spin bowler, as suggested by his strike rate of 37.3, which is the highest among all spin bowlers with at least 50 Test wickets.

In 13 matches, he has taken 56 wickets, with four five-wicket hauls. Easwaran, meanwhile, has been a domestic cricket stalwart for Bengal, with 101 first-class games, 7,674 runs at an average of 48.87, 27 centuries and 29 fifties behind him.

Yet, he continues to wait for his Test debut. Speaking to Boria Majumdar on Revsportz, Shardul said, “On a few occasions, I was also in the same boat. As a player, you go through a lot of emotions, and it’s not easy to sit out, questioning yourself about what you are doing, not getting a game. There are two things. As I mentioned earlier, not everyone is privileged enough to be on the Indian side. The second thing is, unfortunately, the competition is high in India, and only 11 of them get to be a part of the actual playing team.”

He added, “We need to understand that this is likely the best 11 that management is considering, based on the pitch and weather conditions. You’ll have to tell your mind that this was not my game, and it’s also a lot to be able to travel with the team and share the dressing room with the rest. I don’t have many answers to this one, but one just needs to wait around for that one chance.”

Both Kuldeep and Eswaran are expected to feature next in the 2025 edition of the Duleep Trophy, with Kuldeep playing for Central Zone and Easwaran for East Zone.

With India 2-0 up, as many as three players found a spot each in India’s playing XI for the third and final ODI against England. Yet, wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant found no place in the team for the dead rubber. Pant, who was added to India’s squad not just for the ODI series against England but also for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy. After India won the first two matches, changes were expected to be made with the team. While India skipper Rohit Sharma did announce multiple swaps in the playing XI, KL Rahul continued to be persisted for the role behind the stumps as Pant warmed the bench.

It was England skipper Jos Buttler who won the toss and opted to field first. Rohit, however, confirmed that he wanted to bat first anyway. Hence, both captains got what they wanted.

“I wanted to bat first and put runs on the board because we bowled first in the last two games. It was important for us to get a win in the last game. The fielders portrayed themselves well in the last two games, a lot of young blood. We want to continue to do well in the field. They are pretty new in their careers so we want to keep the pressure away from them, let them do their own and they have got a lot of potential.

Rohit announced that Shami and Jadeja were rested for the match but Varun couldn’t participate due to a sore calf issue. Hence, India had to make three changes.

“We have made some changes – Jadeja and Shami have been rested, unfortunately, Varun has a sore calf. So, Washi, Kuldeep, and Arshdeep come into the side,” Rohit said at the time of toss,” said the skipper.

“We are gonna bowl first today. (On whether the expected dew has influenced his decision to bowl first) A little bit maybe, it may spin a bit later. We have batted first in the first two games so it will be a different experience today ahead of the Champions Trophy. It’s a decent wicket, we played New Zealand in the World Cup a few years ago, it was a black soil pitch and it played better in the second half. We have one change – Tom Banton comes in for Jamie Overton into the side,” the England skipper said after the toss.

India Playing XI: Rohit Sharma(c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul(w), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh

England Playing XI: Philip Salt(w), Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(c), Tom Banton, Liam Livingstone, Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Saqib Mahmood

Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy continued his solid run of form in international cricket, breaking Kuldeep Yadav‘s record for most wickets by an Indian spinner in a stretch of T20I matches. Chakravarthy has been a revelation for the T20I side since his return to the set-up last year, having last played for India in 2021 before that. During the third T20I, Chakravarthy shined with figures of 5/24 in four overs, getting wickets of skipper Jos Buttler, Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer, which completely derailed England from 83/1 to 127/8.

Now since his return to T20Is last year, Varun has played 10 matches, taking 27 wickets at an average of 10.96, an economy rate of 7.40 and best bowling figures of 5/17. After 16 overall games, he has taken 29 wickets at an average of 14.65, with an economy rate of 6.84, which is also impressive.

With his five-wicket haul, Varun Chakravarthy reached 10 wickets in the series. Chakravarthy is now the first player to take 10 wickets in a single bilateral T20I series between India and England.

Now, he has overtaken Kuldeep Yadav (25 wickets) for most wickets by an Indian spinner in the 10-match stretch in T20Is. Globally, he stands at number three, next to Syazrul Idrus (Malaysia, 28 wickets) and Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan (Afghanistan, 30 wickets).

Coming to the match, India won the toss and opted to bowl first. Despite a fine 76-run stand between Ben Duckett (51 in 28 balls, with seven fours and two sixes) and skipper Buttler (24 in 22 balls, with a four and six), England lost wickets to spinners regularly. Despite a fighting 43 in 28 balls by Liam Livingstone (one four and five sixes), England could score just 171/9 in their 20 overs.

Chakravarthy (5/24) was the top wicket-taker for India, with Hardik Pandya getting two wickets as well. Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel also got a wicket each.

India spinner Kuldeep Yadav expressed gratitude to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) team for his recovery after groin surgery. Kuldeep took to social media to post an emotional message ahead of his return to competitive cricket. “Recovery takes a team. Grateful to the NCA and its team for all the work behind the scenes,” he wrote on X. The left-arm spinner has been named in India’s squad for the three-match ODI series against England and next month’s ICC Champions Trophy. He last played for India in the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru.

Kuldeep recently posted a video of his bowling in the nets at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, promising his much-awaited return to the white-ball format. The 30-year-old is gearing up to lead the spin attack in the upcoming ODIs against England and the eight-team marquee tournament. He will be supported by all-rounders Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Kuldeep, a left-arm unorthodox spinner who plays for Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket and Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, played a huge role in India’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign and also their runners-up finish in the home ODI World Cup in 2023.

In 103 ODIs for the Men in Blue, Kuldeep Yadav has claimed 168 wickets with two five-fers. His best bowling effort in ODIs is 6-25. He has been part of the Indian team that won the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in the USA and Caribbean and also of the squads that won the ACC Asia Cup in 2018 and 2023.

With India set to play their Champions Trophy matches in Dubai, he will be crucial in India’s hopes of winning the trophy again after 2013. India are set to play three ODIs against England in Nagpur, Cuttack, and Ahmedabad on February 6, 9 and 12, respectively.

In the Champions Trophy, India will begin their Group A campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 before taking on arch-rivals Pakistan on February 23.

Not Virat Kohli Or Jasprit Bumrah. Suresh Raina Names India’s X-Factor For Champions Trophy” »

]]>

Former India all-rounder Suresh Raina believes left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav will be the side’s X-factor in middle overs with the ball in the upcoming Champions Trophy games in Dubai. Since January 2023, India have picked 186 wickets in overs 11-40, and that’s generally been the phase where Kuldeep has bamboozled the batters. On Saturday, Kuldeep, who’s not played any competitive cricket since his hernia surgery in November, was included in India’s squads for ODIs against England and the Champions Trophy.

With uncertainty over Jasprit Bumrah’s participation and Mohammed Shami himself returning from an Achilles injury, a lot will depend on Kuldeep, who has 172 wickets in 106 ODIs, to weave his magic in the middle overs for India in the three matches against England and the eight-team Champions Trophy starting on February 19.

The good news, though, is that Kuldeep has been bowling at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and is building up well to achieve full-match fitness. Raina, a member of India winning the 2013 Champions Trophy, also feels Hardik Pandya’s seam bowling will be of importance in middle overs.

“From the way you will look at it, Arshdeep will be the key along with Bumrah, who will be very lethal when it comes to death overs as well. But the most important role here will be of Hardik Pandya, like will he come to bowl with Kuldeep? Moreover, will Washington Sundar or Axar Patel play?

“I feel that Arshdeep, Shami, Bumrah, Hardik, Kuldeep and Axar or Jadeja (will be the initial bowling combination), as you can increase the batting, especially with top five batters there. Hardik can be used as a floater, with Rishabh Pant capable of batting well.

“But the most important player in the middle who can bring a little bit of pressure will be Kuldeep Yadav. We all remember how he castled Babar Azam and changed the game. Right now, he is working very hard at the NCA and he also has that skill of deceiving batters with a very different type of action.

“We do need to praise Rohit Sharma for the way he’s backed Kuldeep Yadav. We did have a mystery spinner in Varun Chakaravarthy during the T20 World Cup there in 2021 in Dubai. But Kuldeep Yadav has that stillness, different action and bowls in a very different way. So, I think the X-factor in middle-overs bowling will be Kuldeep Yadav,” said Raina while replying to a question from IANS in the Star Sports press room show.

For the ODIs against England, set to happen in Nagpur, Cuttack and Ahmedabad on February 6, 9 and 12, respectively, seam-bowling Harshit Rana is in the Indian team as a cover for Bumrah, who will not be ready for the first two matches of the bilateral series.

With doubts still over Bumrah, who hasn’t bowled since back spasms didn’t allow him to bowl in the second innings of the Sydney Test, Raina stated Rana is a promising player but felt India will be better off having Mohammed Siraj in the squad if the fast-bowling spearhead isn’t fit.

“Harshit Rana has good pace, good bumper, variation, yorker and pace, as seen from the Test matches he played in Australia. He’s young and brings something new to the table, while we all saw the different pace and angles he brought in for KKR in IPL. He and both Arshdeep Singh can bowl at the death. But I still feel Siraj is a better option if Bumrah is not fit,” he said.

India, the two-time Champions Trophy winners, will begin their Group A campaign in Dubai against Bangladesh on February 20, after which they play against arch-rivals Pakistan on February 23, before facing New Zealand on March 2.

Despite concerns over his fitness, Jasprit Bumrah – the backbone of India’s bowling – was on Saturday (January 18, 2025) included in India’s squad for the Champions Trophy, starting on February 19. While Yashasvi Jaiswal has earned a maiden ODI call-up, Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav – bowlers who are also on a comeback trail following injury layoffs – have also been selected in the Rohit Sharma-led squad.

The team was picked by the selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, in the presence of captain Rohit Sharma at the BCCI headquarters here. After a long meeting that lasted well over two hours, Agarkar announced the squad and said that Harshit Rana will be the additional player for the ODI series against England with Bumrah unlikely to be available at least for the first two ODIs.

“With Bumrah, we are waiting to hear about his fitness and when he is likely to be available. At the moment I don’t think he is likely to be fit for the first couple of games,” Agarkar said in a media interaction, hoping that Bumrah will be fit in time.

“I know he was asked to offload for five weeks of bowling, which is early first week February, if I am not wrong. And we’ll probably find out a bit more around that time what exactly and with regards to what his medical condition is. I am sure BCCI might just put something out from the physio itself. It’s better it comes from the medical department than me trying to explain what exactly is wrong with him. But that’s the time frame that we have been told. And hopefully, he is okay after that.”

Match-fit?

Ever since he walked off the field on day two of the Sydney Test on January 4 due to a back injury, Bumrah has been advised rest. It will be interesting to see if he is match fit in the 10-day window after his rest and recovery period gets over on February 8.

No place for Siraj

The Hindu understands that Nitish Reddy and Shivam Dube’s names were discussed as possible back-ups for all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who returned to the ODI set-up since the 2023 ODI World Cup. Kuldeep’s return following a hernia surgery and Ravindra Jadeja’s inclusion as the last name on the team sheet instead of Mohammed Siraj, a pacer, meant the selectors have preferred only three genuine pacers and four spinners in the squad.

Meanwhile, Jaiswal, India’s standout player in 2024, has been handed a maiden ODI call-up as a reserve opener. Rohit referred to his selection over his “potential.”

The squad: Rohit Sharma (Capt.), Shubman Gill (Vice-capt.), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, K.L. Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya,Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja. (Harshit Rana to be the additional player for the three ODIs against England.)
