Baroda vs Mumbai, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Semi-Final Live Streaming: Baroda will be squaring off against Mumbai in the first semi-final of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 on Friday at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Baroda walked through a wall of fire in the group stage to qualify for the knockouts and that grit will be their primary weapon against an explosive Mumbai. Mumbai, the 2022 champions, were largely untested in Group E and their first real test came against Vidarbha in the last eight match on Wednesday. Their batters led by Ajinkya Rahane carried the team past a 200-plus target with minimum fuss, but even in that victory Mumbai would not have missed the profligate ways of their bowlers.

Baroda created history in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy© X (Twitter)

Baroda scripted history by posting the highest team total in the history of T20 cricket during their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy encounter against Sikkim on Thursday. Baroda ended up scoring a mammoth 349 for the loss of five wickets and surpassed the previous record held by Zimbabwe (344/4 against Gambia in October 2024). This was also the first time that any team scored more than 300 in the SMAT with the previous highest total being 275/6 by Punjab. Baroda registered this huge total without Hardik Pandya in their side and captain Krunal Pandya not even getting a chance to bat.

Batting first, Baroda were off to a flying start with Shashwat Rawat and Abhimanyu Singh stitching together a 92-run stand for the opening wicket. While Shashwat slammed 43 off just 16 balls, Abhimanyu completed his half-century and scored 53 off 17 deliveries.

It turned out to be the ideal platform for Bhanu Pania who scored an unbeaten 134 off 51 deliveries with the help of 5 fours and 15 sixes. It was a display of pure power as he ended his innings with a strike rate of 262.75 as Sikkim bowlers looked completely helpless against the onslaught.

That was not the end as Shivalik Sharma scored 55 off 17 balls while Vishnu Solanki scored 50 off just 16 balls to take Baroda’s score to 349 and register a big record in the shortest format of the sport.

Earlier, India’s T20 skipper Suryakumar Yadav smashed 70 off 46 balls in his first appearance in the 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy while Shivam Dube capped his return from a three-month long injury lay-off with a scintillating 37-ball-71 as Mumbai outplayed Services by 39 runs.

Mumbai scored 192 for 4 riding on the 130-run fourth wicket stand between Surya and Dube.

Between the duo, they smashed 11 sixes with Dube enjoying the lion’s share. Surya also hit seven boundaries while Dube had a couple of fours to his credit. Surya’s hits were primarily on the on-side with one six over long-on, couple towards deep mid-wicket region and one behind square.

Both batters were severe on off-spinner Nitin Tanwar who went for 54 in his four overs.

In reply, Services were all out for 153 in 19.3 overs with Shardul Thakur redeeming himself with figures of 4/25. Left arm spinner Shams Mulani also chipped in with three wickets. Dube won the player of the match award after also getting a wicket.

After attracting a Rs 23.75 crore bid from Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL mega auction, Venkatesh Iyer made a small right step while producing an all-round effort to propel Madhya Pradesh to a 101-run win over Meghalaya in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Group A match on Monday. Venkatesh got the third highest bid in the auction being held at Jeddah after Rishabh Pant (Rs 27 crore) and Shreyas Iyer (Rs 26.75 crore). Venkatesh first made a 17-ball 37 (4×6) which along with Rajat Patidar’s 78 (36b, 6×4, 6×6) guided MP to 222 for five in 20 overs.

Venkatesh, then took a wicket (2-0-9-1) to support Mohammed Arshad Khan (2.4-0-5-3) as Madhya Pradesh bundled out Meghalaya for 121 with two balls to spare.

Harshal, Chahal sparkle

A blistering hundred by Nishant Sindhu (100, 48b, 11×4, 4×6) and a brisk 91 (45b, 11×4, 4×6) by Himanshu Rana powered Haryana to 255 for two against Arunachal Pradesh in a Group C match at Mumbai.

The Arunachal batters could not tackle the guiles of pacer Harshal Patel (4-0-12-5) and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (4-0-15-2) to get bowled out for 80 as Haryana celebrated a huge 175-run win.

Chahal was a Rs 18 crore buy by the Punjab Kings while Harshal went to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 8 crore.

Pandya brothers shore up Baroda

Hardik Pandya (41 not out, 21b, 2×4, 3×6) and skipper Krunal Pandya (45, 35b, 3×4, 1×6), who joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru for Rs 5.75 crore, played key roles as Baroda chased down a 166-run target set by Uttarakhand to notch their second successive win in Group B.

Earlier, Hardik chipped in with a wicket as well to help Baroda restrict Uttarakhand to a manageable 165 for seven.

Brief scores: At Rajkot: Group A: Madhya Pradesh: 222/5 in 20 overs (Rajat Patidar 78, Venkatesh Iyer 37) beat Meghalaya: 121 all out in 19.4 overs (Arshad Khan 3/5, Venkatesh Iyer 1/9) by 101 runs.

At Mumbai: Group C: Haryana: 255/2 in 20 overs (Himanshu Rana 91, Nishant Sindhu 100 not out) beat Arunachal Pradesh: 80 all out in 17 overs (Harshal Patel 5/12, Yuzvendra Chahal 2/15) by 175 runs.

At Indore: Group B: Uttarakhand: 165/7 in 20 overs (R Samarth 42, Avneesh Sudha 38; Hardik Pandya 1/25, Lukeman Meriwalla 2/37) lost to Baroda: 168/5 in 18.4 overs (Hardik Pandya 41 not out, Krunal Pandya 45; Agrim Tiwari 2/28) by 5 wickets. PTI UNG 7/21/2024 KHS

Presence of a few frontline stars like Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami and its co-existence with the IPL mega auction have given the latest edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, beginning across venues from Saturday, a meaty context. But interestingly, the players are not sewn by a common auction thread in the country’s premier domestic T20 tournament. Pandya need not to worry about impressing the IPL scouts after finding a place in Mumbai Indians’ retention list ahead of the auction on November 23 and 24 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The all-rounder’s appearance in Baroda’s jersey is more in line with the BCCI’s policy of leading cricketers mandatorily appearing in domestic tournaments.

So, his aim will be to keep in touch with the game and possibly help Baroda to a rare title victory.

But Shami’s outing for Bengal is multi-dimensional. The veteran pacer will be eager to come up with a fine show to further underline his fitness after recently taking seven wickets for his state in a Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh.

It’s a chance for him to continue to chart his way back to top-level cricket, and his efforts here will also have a bearing on him boarding the flight to Australia, at least for the latter part of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

That’s the larger picture, but the 34-year-old will also be looking to get picked up in the IPL auction after getting released by Gujarat Titans.

Considering his lofty pedigree and skills, Shami will certainly find a taker in the auction room, but a couple of power spells in the SMAT will add more gravitas to his profile when his name is read out by the auctioneer.

Similarly, Shreyas Iyer (Mumbai), who had led Kolkata Knight Riders to title in IPL 2024, and Yuzvendra Chahal (Haryana) will be looking to boost their already impressive IPL CV with fine efforts in the tournament.

After all, in the pacy auction world, a recent productive outing can further add to the monetary value surrounding a player irrespective of his stature.

A quick rewind to Shah Rukh Khan’s value rising a few rungs after guiding Tamil Nadu to SMA title with a final ball six against Karnataka a couple of seasons ago will validate that point.

This year too, a plethora of young and relatively unfamiliar names will be hoping to make this tournament a platform to attract big quids from the auction.

Bengal wicketkeeper batter Abhishek Porel, who was part of India A tour to Australia recently, can score runs at a furious pace and the 22-year-old would want to press his best foot forward in the initial rounds itself.

Then we have Abhinav Manohar of Karnataka, who was let go by the Titans.

Abhinav garnered 507 runs at an average of 84.5 at a whopping 196.5 strike-rate in the KSCA Maharaja T20 recently, and he would be eager to further buttress claim with substantial knocks here in the middle-order.

Young Manav Suthar of Rajasthan too fall in the same category, as he has already constructed the image of a thrifty left-arm spinner and a handy lower-order batter.

Along with these established and budding stars, an array of players, who have been pushed behind, such as Karun Nair (Vidarbha), Krunal Pandya (Baroda) and Deepak Hooda (Rajasthan) too will dream to resurrect their sagging IPL careers with some excellent outings in the event.

Star wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul is set to be retained by Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season 2025, but not as a captain. IANS understands that the captaincy pressure is the main reason for Rahul stepping down from the role as he wants to contribute more with the bat. However, it remains uncertain who will be leading the team in the upcoming edition of IPL 2025. Sources close to the Lucknow franchise confirmed that Rahul will be retained but the captaincy role remains uncertain; Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Pooran are the two big names that are in the race.

“The meeting was official with the CEO Sanjiv Goenka on Monday, the captaincy and retention topics were discussed. However, Rahul is unlikely to captain the side in the upcoming edition as he wants to explore himself more as a batter. Goenka has full confidence in Rahul and he will be retained as a player, but will not be seen captaining the side,” sources close to the Lucknow-based franchise told IANS.

“We are still exploring the captaincy option but with BCCI agreeing on player retention conditions we have two players (Krunal Pandya and Nicholas Poran) in race,” he added.

On Monday Rahul met Goenka at his office in Alipore, Kolkata to discuss things. Both had a long discussion for around four hours after which Rahul left for Bengaluru, National Cricket Academy to start his Duleep Trophy practice.

Rahul will be playing for Team ‘A’ captained by Shubman Gill.

Rahul had a falling out with LSG owner Goenka in full view of the fans with sources saying that the LSG owner was not happy with Rahul’s captaincy as the Lucknow Super Giants failed to qualify for the playoffs after being in a good position. After the IPL, Rahul did not play well and was not included in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup that India won in Barbados. He is hoping to make it to the Indian T20 squad.

After his T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, star India all-rounder Hardik Pandya received a warm welcome in his home city, Vadodara, on Monday. The 30-year-old also attended a roadshow to celebrate Team India’s win in the T20 World Cup. In the T20 World Cup, Pandya scored 144 runs in six innings at an average of 48.00 and a strike rate of 151.57, with a half-century and best score of 50*. He also took 11 wickets in eight games at an average of 17.36 and an economy rate of 7.64, with the best figures of 3/20. During the roadshow, many fans gathered on the road to give Hardik a cordial welcome in Vadodara. Hardik’s brother, Krunal Pandya, was also present at the roadshow.

Watch: Hardik gets enormous reception in hometown after T20 World Cup title

Facing injuries and controversies not so long ago, Hardik once again delivered when all the lights shined bright on him, playing a major role in his side’s ICC T20 World Cup triumph. It was Hardik who secured the crucial wicket of Heinrich Klaasen in the 177-run chase during the final and delivered the crucial final over in which he got the wicket of David Miller, which completely turned the game in favour of India.

This tournament marked a redemption tale for Hardik, who was booed out of nearly every stadium across India during the IPL 2024 after taking over the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians (MI) from five-time IPL champion Rohit Sharma. The all-rounder, who was just making a comeback into the game after suffering an injury to his ankle in the 50-over World Cup last year, became a victim of online trolling and fan wars as he was accused of betraying the MI franchise, Rohit and his former franchise Gujarat Titans (GT), which he led to IPL title in 2022.

India ended their 11-year-long ICC trophy drought as Virat Kohli (76), Hardik Pandya (3/20) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/18) starred in Men in Blue’s seven-run win over South Africa in the final at Barbados on June 29. Virat’s masterclass knock helped India reach 176/7 in 20 overs, while Bumrah and Pandya unleashed a pace choke on Proteas, snatching the match from a losing position to restrict Proteas to 169/8 in their 20 overs.

India all-rounder Krunal Pandya penned a heartfelt note for brother Hardik Pandya, who played a crucial role in India ending a 11-year wait for ICC title during the recently-concluded T20 World Cup. Addressing the criticism Hardik has had to face, especially during IPL 2024, Krunal revealed that playing for India has always been his younger brother’s utmost priority. In a lengthy Instagram post, Krunal also pointed out how fans bowed and trolled Hardik, who kept his head grounded and responded to the critics with his performance during the T20 World Cup.

“It’s almost been a decade since Hardik and I started playing professional cricket. And the last few days have been like a fairy tale that we’ve dreamt off. Like every countryman I’ve lived this through our teams heroics and I couldn’t be more emotional with my brother being at the heart of it,” Krunal captioned a photo album.

Krunal insisted that the criticism has only motivated Hardik to come back even stronger.

“The last six months have been the toughest for Hardik. He simply didn’t deserve what he went through, and as a brother, I felt very, very bad for him. From booing, to people saying all kinds of nasty things, at the end of the day, we all forgot that he is just a human being who also has emotions. He somehow passed through all of this with a smile, though I know how hard it was for him to put on a smile. He kept working hard and focusing on what he needed to do to get the World Cup since that was his ultimate objective.”

“For Hardik, it has always been country first, and it will always be that way. For a young boy coming from Baroda, there can be no bigger achievement than helping his team win the World Cup.  Hardik, I am so, so proud of you. I love you so much, and you deserve every bit of happiness and all the good things that are coming your way. I have immense respect for you, my bachhu,” he added.

Recently, Hardik also admitted that while the past six months have been tough for him, he never lost patience.

“The last 6 months have been very entertaining for me, there have been a lot of ups and downs and the public booed me. A lot of things happened and I always felt that if I give any answer, it would be through sports… So I believed that I would stay strong, will work hard,” Hardik Pandya said during an interaction with PM Modi at the Prime Minister’s residence in Delhi.

Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya are one star brother duo in the IPL, who are widely regarded. Hardik is the captain of the Mumbai Indians team while Krunal is an important spin allrounder for Lucknow Super Giants. The brothers started playing cricket together and rose to fame almost at the same time. Both played for MI at one point of time. Then then went to  different franchises. Ahead of the 2024 season, Hardik came back to MI as the skipper.

On Friday, the Pandya household welcomed a new member in their family – Vayu – the second child of Krunal Pandya and his wife Pankhuri Sharma. They have an elder son too.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) all-rounder Krunal Pandya delivered the most economic four-over spell for his franchise in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 33-year-old accomplished this feat against Gujarat Titans (GT) at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

Pandya took 3/11 in four overs, at an economy rate of 2.75. His unbelievable spell saw him get wickets of Sai Sudarshan, BR Sharath and Darshan Nalkande.

This is the most economical spell of four overs by an LSG bowler in IPL. Pandya broke his own record, having previously delivered a 2/11 in four overs spell against Punjab Kings back in 2022. Mark Wood, the English fast bowler, also delivered a four-over spell of 5/14 against Delhi Capitals last year.

Krunal loves playing against GT it seems as numbers prove it. In five matches, he has taken six wickets against the franchise at an average of 17.66 and an economy rate of 5.3. He has also maintained a strike rate of 20 against GT. He has also scored 51 runs in five innings against GT at an average of 17.00, with the best score of 23*, often coming down the order.
