Barring Yashasvi Jaiswal, no Indian batter managed to score runs with the consistency required to excel in Australia. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul showed promise on multiple occasions but couldn’t stand up and deliver when India needed them to click as a unit. While majority of the focus has been around the poor form of veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, even Shubman Gill had a forgettable Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Seen as the next big thing in Indian cricket, Gill has been backed by the selection committee over a long period of time but his output, especially overseas, remains below par.

Former India cricketer Krisnamachari Srikkanth, also a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team, has branded Shubman Gill ‘overrated’ while hitting out at the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee for ignoring other deserving stars.

“I’ve always maintained that Shubman Gill is an overrated cricketer but nobody listened to me. He is a highly overrated cricketer,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

“When Gill is getting this much of a long rope, some people might wonder whether even players like Suryakumar Yadav could have been given a longer rope in Tests,” he said.

Srikkanth feels the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Sai Sudharshan are some of the top-order players who should be looked at by the selection committee. As Gill struggles to perform at his best, the trio has done well in domestic cricket but the selection committee still continues to look the other way.

“Suryakumar didn’t have a very good start in Tests but he has the technique and he has the ability. But the selectors and the management have now boxed him into a white-ball specialist. So that means you have to look at fresh talent.”

“Ruturaj Gaikwad, for example, has been doing wonderfully in first-class cricket. But they’ve not bothered to pick him. Meanwhile, someone like Sai Sudharsan has been lighting it up in ‘A’ tours. You have to promote these kinds of talents. Instead, they are running around circles by picking Gill,” he asserted.

Legendary Indian cricket team batter Kris Srikkanth blasted Royal Challengers Bengaluru for their early performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction. RCB went for a number of players but ended up buying just all-rounder Liam Livingstone for Rs 8.5 Crore. There was a lot of speculation regarding RCB going big for KL Rahul. However, he ended up joining Delhi Capitals for Rs 14 crore. Srikkanth was not happy with how RCB operated in the first part of the auction and he went on to call their strategy “naive” and “baffling”. “Rcb needed one really good keeper batter and it would have been an ideal match to bring back Rahul into the fold that to at a steal of a price ! The strategy they have currently is baffling and quite naive to be frank!” Srikkanth wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“As usual rcb has missed a trick in the auctions by not going hard for @klrahul ! What a steal for DC though,” the former India cricketer further added on social media.

Generational talent Rishabh Pant pipped Shreyas Iyer to become the costliest buy in IPL’s history with a Rs 27 crore winning bid from Lucknow Super Giants as teams expectedly went the extra mile for marquee Indian players at the mega auction.

Iyer, who captained the Kolkata Knight Riders to the title earlier this year, and Delhi Capitals’ icon Pant, reaped the benefits of making themselves available at the auction following differences with their respective teams.

Iyer was the first one to surpass Mitchell Starc as the IPL’s most expensive buy with cash-heavy Punjab Kings shelling out Rs 26.75 crore for their potential captain before Pant overtook the fellow Indian by attracting Rs 25 lakh more from LSG.

Former DC teammates Iyer and Pant have had to deal with adversity in the past couple of years but have shown remarkable resilience and courage to bounce back.

Pant beat all odds to make a successful comeback after a life-threatening car accident in 2022 while Iyer put behind his exclusion from the BCCI central contracts list to lead KKR to their third IPL trophy earlier this year.

Delhi Capitals expectedly enabled the Right To Match to buy back Pant at Rs 20.75 crore but LSG raised the bid to Rs 27 crore and the former decided against matching that amount.

Both Iyer and Pant are expected to lead their new teams in IPL 2025, which will begin March 14.

Gautam Gambhir‘s appointment as head coach of the Indian team has raised doubts over the future of veteran batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Both Rohit and Virat announced their T20I retirements after the T20 World Cup final last month. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah assured that Rohit will lead the team during the ICC Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship (WTC) in 2025, it is not clear whether he and Virat will be available for the next ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in 2027.

During a press conference, Gambhir also re-iterated that both Rohit and Kohli are in his plans, saying that the duo has plenty of cricket left in them.

Former India Krishnamachari Srikkanth has pointed out how Gambhir had earlier hinted that senior players will have no place in his team if they fail to perform in the T20 World Cup.

“Gautam Gambhir has taken a U-turn. Before the T20 World Cup 2024, he was saying if Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma do not perform, they will not sit in my team. Then he took a U-turn now, saying there is no player like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. After becoming head coach, he said that both have a lot of cricket left and hopefully they will fit for the 2027 World Cup,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

On the duo’s participation at the ODI World Cup, Srikkanth suggested that while there is a possibility that Kohli will feature in the tournament, considering his high fitness standards, he feels that it would be difficult for Rohit to play beyond the age of 40.

“He is a good player, but his age is 37 presently, and the next ODI World Cup is three more years ahead. He will be 40 years old then. I mean, unless you are a super-fit person like MS Dhoni or Sachin Tendulkar, you can’t play World Cup at 40s. Yeah, Virat Kohli could play in the 2027 World Cup, in my opinion, for sure. But for Rohit, Mr. Gambhir, you went overboard; he will faint in South Africa,” he added.

The 2027 ODI World Cup will be held in Africa as South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia will jointly host the tournament.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made its stance clear as Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir explained the decision to hand T20I captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav, over Hardik Panday. Agarkar, who is the chairman of selectors, explained that Hardik’s fitness is one of the primary reasons behind the team’s decision to move on to Suryakumar from the leadership perspective. India great Krisnamachari Srikkanth, however, isn’t entirely convinced by the reasons given by Agarkar in the joint press conference with Gambhir, saying he doesn’t feel Hardik was snubbed over fitness concerns.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth said that the selectors would’ve gotten feedback from the dressing room, based on this year’s Indian Premier League, where Hardik Pandya‘s Mumbai Indians finished last.

“I think they have gone from the feedback of the dressing room. It must have probably been from the IPL. Fitness is something that I will not agree. He played the entire IPL. He also bowled. Yes, he might not have done well (in the IPL). That’s another issue. Mumbai Indians didn’t qualify. At the World Cup, he was the vice-captain and he played well. So, fitness is something that I won’t agree with,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.

While Srikkanth agrees that Surya has the required qualities to become a good captain, fitness can’t be the reason behind Hardik not being considered for the role.

“Feedback from the dressing room? I am not able to understand that. Yes, Suryakumar has the qualities to be captain. I agree to that. He could prove to be a very good captain. But the reasons for dropping Hardik Pandya as captain are beating around the bush in terms of the reasoning.”

“Suryakumar is a fantastic person. I like him. So is Hardik. But the reasons that they are giving, they could have said it in a straightforward manner ‘we are dropping Hardik Pandya as captain, we want to move forward. We are looking at Suryakumar as a long term’. Make it clear. Say it without fear.”

“I have also been chairman. I have picked players, dropped players and faced a lot of criticism. I am not saying I was God, I have also made mistakes. But you have to give a good explanation. I am not convinced by the reasoning,” he asserted.

Legendary Indian cricket team batter Kris Srikkanth was extremely critical of Babar Azam and even asked him to consider leaving T20 cricket. The Pakistan cricket team captain has enjoyed an extremely poor run of form in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 and his slow approach has also put him under a lot of criticism from experts and fans. Following Pakistan’s T20 World Cup 2024 exit, Srikkanth said that Babar’s ‘tuk-tuking’ does not have a place in T20 cricket and he should stop playing the shortest format of the sport. “I don’t think Babar should play T20 cricket. I mean you can’t do this tuk-tuking all the time in T20 cricket. They say Babar scored 4,000 runs like Virat or Rohit, but his strike rate is only 112-115 what are you talking about?,” said Srikkanth on Star Sports.

Babar Azam’s prospects of becoming Test captain again have seemingly taken a major hit after the USA ended Pakistan’s chances of claiming a spot in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup.

Sources told Geo News that Shan Masood will retain the Test captaincy for their two-match red-ball series against Bangladesh in August. It was also reported that following the T20 World Cup fiasco, the board is disappointed in Babar’s ability to lead.

The Bangladesh series will be the first stint for former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie as Pakistan’s red-ball head coach.

Masood was appointed Pakistan’s Test captain after Babar decided to leave captaincy in all formats in the aftermath of last year’s ODI World Cup. Shaheen was chosen to succeed Babar as the T20I skipper.

His brief run as the Pakistan skipper ended in April this year. Shaheen was removed from the T20I captaincy after leading the team in just one series against New Zealand. The Blackcaps outplayed Pakistan in all facets of the game and scripted a 4-1 T20I series defeat for the Shaheen-led team.

Before the T20 World Cup started, Babar was restored as the white-ball skipper. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), in a statement, described the change as a “strategic move.”

But PCB’s move didn’t pan out as they would have hoped. Gary Kirsten was brought in as the white-ball head coach ahead of the tournament to bolster their chances. However, Pakistan crashed out of the tournament in the group stage. They suffered consecutive defeats in their opening games against the USA and arch-rival India.

RCB lost to Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024 Eliminator© AFP

Legendary Indian cricket team batter Kris Srikkanth had a blunt advice for Royal Challengers Bengaluru after the Faf Du Plessis-led side lost to Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2024 Eliminator on Thursday. RCB were outplayed completely by RR who claimed a four-wicket victory. It was the end of an impressive campaign which saw RCB bounce back from a horrible start with six victories on the trot including a sensational win over Chennai Super Kings in their final league game. Srikkanth said that RCB celebrated way too much after beating CSK and advised them to stay quiet when they are enjoying success.

“In life when you are doing well keep your mouth shut and keep going, when you make noise out of something you are doing you cannot do that work,” said Srikkanth on his YouTube channel.

“They were posting unnecessary videos and showing off too much (after the win against CSK). That’s why came and destroyed them, that’s why in cricket you need to shut your mouth and play.”

“If you played well, congrats, if you played poorly then take the criticism but you should never open your mouth and show aggression. They are going on congratulating themselves for qualifying for the playoffs and for the great comeback, CSK and MI have done this so many more times. CSK and Mumbai have both come from nowhere and won titles. These guys won six matches and as soon as they qualified they got knocked out,” Srikkanth added.

After the match, RCB captain Faf Du Plessis opened up on the defeat.

“With the dew coming, we felt we were short with the bat. Did think we were 20 runs shy of what was a good score. Credit to the boys – they fought really well. That’s all you can ask for. If you look at naturally assessing the pitch and conditions, you would say it’s a 180 pitch because it was swinging upfront and was quite slow. But what we’ve found out this season, with the impact player, the par score isn’t enough any more. Also with the dew coming in. Extremely proud. Lot of teams – their wheels would’ve fallen off after 1 from 9. To come back like that, six games in a row, takes a lot of heart and character. We weren’t special tonight in terms of pushing that extra 20 runs with the bat,” he said.

Krishnamachari Srikkanth, the former India opener and chief selector, said left-handed hard-hitting batter Rinku Singh has to be a certainty in the 15-member India squad for the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup. Rinku shot to the limelight with five sixes on last five balls of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ innings against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023, a season where he continuously showed his finishing skills. He made his India T20I debut later in the year and amassed 356 runs in 15 games, staying not out in seven of them at a high strike rate of 176.23.

With the KKR top order doing bulk of scoring so far for the side in IPL 2024, Rinku hasn’t got much time to bat, making 112 in eight matches at a strike-rate of 157.74. “A classic example is Rinku Singh. Rinku Singh is a certainty in my 15. He hasn’t got that many opportunities to bat in the IPL but you see his international track record, it’s an amazing track record. Amazing track record in South Africa and with every opportunity he has got. So Rinku Singh has to be a certainty in the 15.”

“But if we go by recent form or opportunities, he hasn’t got enough opportunities. End of the day you’ve to forget who the player is and look at what is his track record. Is he a great player, is a deadly player, is he fit? So Rinku Singh has to be a certainty, he has to get the Visa and he will fasten his seat belt to take the flight to the United States to play the game as one of the 15 members in the side,” said Srikkanth, who was the chief selector of India’s 2011 World Cup winning teams, on ‘Ticket to World Cup’ episode of Star Sports Press Room Show.

Matthew Hayden, the former Australia batter, believes IPL has brought out some a lot of Indian talent to the fore, who are now being talked about in selection race of the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup. “I tell you it’s a true credit to the IPL, that it gets so much headspace in terms of selection, for international cricket.

“It’s a testimony to how brilliant the competition is and it’s also a credit to the way the IPL has allowed it’s foreign players, to play and strengthen the tournament. I’m not sure there’s another across T20 cricket that’s equal. How good is it, because we have found Jaiswal and he’s just one of the many like Rinku who have been discovered by IPL cricket.”

India, the 2007 edition winners, will begin their Men’s T20 World Cup campaign in June 5 against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. They are slotted in Group A alongside Pakistan, Canada and tournament co-hosts USA.

India’a T20 World Cup Squad: Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill© AFP

The Indian cricket team squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup is going to be announced soon. With the deadline (May 1) fast approaching, BCCI chief selectors was seen in Delhi where India captain Rohit Sharma played on Saturday. It is expected that Rohit will meet Agarkar on Sunday and then in the next couple of days the team will be announced any time. Several experts have been picking their version of the ideal 2024 T20 World Cup squad. 1983 World Cup winner Krishnamachari Srikkanth also picked his squad.

Interestingly, neither Shubman Gill nor Yashasvi Jaiswal features in his squad. His playing XI has Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as the openers followed by Suryakumar Yadav at No. 3. Shivam Dube, KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya follow. Then the spin bowling consists Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja. They are followed by pacers Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah. Rinku Singh, Axar Patel and T Nataraj have been lept as reserves. The most interesting part is that Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant are fighting it out for the second wicketkeeper’s spot.

Even former Indian cricket team star Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Kuldeep and Jadeja are th ebest spin combination for the T20 World Cup.

“Yes. And this is perhaps Kuldeep Yadav at his peak with regards to his skills, his confidence. You can see now he’s out there like a Bumrah or Chahal at his peak. He is commanding that kind of respect. He looks comfortable with the responsibility and champions, you know, those breaks and those moments that you are seeking at the right time,” Manjrekar said on Star Sports.

” So this is where Kuldeep has now become a champion bowler and he is somebody I mean that we should pencil down. Ravindra Jadeja will come in as a left-arm spinner batter and Kuldeep the second spinner,” he added.

MS Dhoni was back at his destructive best as he slammed 37 runs in just 16 deliveries for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Sunday. The former Indian cricket team skipper looked in brilliant form and although his side slumped to their first loss of this year’s competition, his knock earned him praise from both fans and experts. Former India batter Krishnamachari Srikkanth was left ecstatic by Dhoni’s powerful hitting and during his analysis after the match, he marveled at the fact that the wicket-keeper batter is still able to play such powerful shots at the age of 42.

“I don’t know how to express this. On one side, as a MS Dhoni fan, I am very happy, in a sense thala what a knock! At the age of 42, someone is hitting like this, he is hitting them without any worry. Vintage Dhoni! In 2005, he hit an aggressive century against Pakistan in Vizag, he got out for 0 in the first match of his international career. In his second match (fifth), he tore into the Pakistan attack,” he said.

“He is hitting sixes over point, he is hitting one-handed six into the mid-wicket stands. He is hitting it everywhere. He tore into the Delhi attack. What a knock! Earlier, he used to access the point region for his big shots on the off-side, but that cover drive, that leaning six was brilliant,” he added.

Srikkanth also hailed Dhoni as the best wicket-keeper at the moment and placed Gujarat Titans’ Wriddhiman Saha at No. 2. There have been a lot of speculation regarding Dhoni’s future in the competition but Srikkanth went on to say that he believes Dhoni will play for two more years.

“In terms of keeping, he is still the best Indian keeper. He is still taking catches nonchalantly while standing up to spinners. He is still India’s best. No. 1 is Dhoni, No. 2 is Wriddhiman Saha, they both are still the best in the business. He made it look so easy. He is keeping well, he is batting well, he is running between the wickets well. Is he 42? I think, he will play the IPL for 2 more years, I think,” he said.

Former Indian cricket team batter Krishnamachari Srikkanth suggested massive changes to the Royal Challengers Bangalore playing XI in the IPL 2024 after their loss to Kolkata Knight Riders. During a discussion on Star Sports, Srikkanth said that Will Jacks should be given a chance as an opener with Virat Kohli while Faf du Plessis should come out to play at No. 3. He also suggested that RCB should drop Alzarri Joseph as well as Rajat Patidar and include an Indian fast bowler like Akash Deep.

“Will Jacks is a brilliant off-spinner, I think we can push him for 2 overs. The line-up according to me should be, if I was the captain. Will Jacks, Virat Kohli opening. Faf du Plessis at No. 3, Cameron Green at 4, Glenn Maxwell, and then you drop Alzarri Joseph, drop Patidar and play an Indian fast bowler – Akash Deep,” Srikkanth said on Star Sports.

“Then what happens is that you have good balance with both bat and ball. Otherwise, you will be struggling while bowling. Yesterday I was surprised that RCB did not bowl a single bouncer to the throat. Come on, you let Sunil Narine score a fifty (47 off 22 balls),” Srikkanth added.

Three matches might be too small a sample size to form an opinion but going by the lack of variety that has been on show in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s bowling attack, they might just be staring at a long, tiring IPL season this year.

The match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday offered the latest and the largest footprint of this particular weakness as the RCB bowlers failed to check a set of free-hitting batters while defending 183.

The immediate defence will be to project the presence of dew and an improved M Chinnaswamy pitch during the second innings. But a deep dive will give a different picture.

Defending a total, even a competitive one like 183, demands a tight beginning, however, the RCB bowlers were profligate.

Mohammed Siraj‘s length ball was walloped over mid-wicket for a six by Phil Salt, and the Englishman was served with two more juicy offerings on the fifth stump which were carted for a six and four each. The first over produced 18 runs.

Alzarri Joseph was introduced in the third over. But the pacer gave Sunil Narine a length ball on leg-stump which was dispatched for a six over long-on and two balls later a short-pitched delivery was sent in the same direction for a maximum.

These are the balls that will be punished at this level — dew or no dew, whether it is easy pitch or tough pitch.

There was an exception in Vysakh Vijayakumar who used knuckle balls and pace-off deliveries to good effect to return with excellent figures of 1/23, but the more experienced names were reluctant to bring in those variations – at least consistently.

“The second innings was slightly better to bat because the ball came on to the bat a bit quicker because of the dew. I was trying to use hard-length balls and short balls banged into the pitch to contain batters,” Vijaykumar said in the post-match press conference.

“But it was still gripping from both the ends. We did try to mix it up but they (KKR batters) got away with it.” There’s some truth in his words. The stats show that KKR bowlers used 22 balls under 120 kmph and conceded just 20 runs off them to pick up three wickets.

Meanwhile, the RCB bowlers bowled 19 balls under 120 kmph, but gave away 40 runs and could bag only a wicket.
