As the Opposition members continued their protest, the Lok Sabha on Monday (August 11, 2025) passed the two crucial Bills pertaining to taxation without any debate.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Income-Tax (No 2) Bill and the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha when no Opposition member was present in the House. Most of the Opposition leaders had been detained while marching towards the headquarters of the Election Commission against the revision of the Bihar electoral rolls and alleged electoral malpractices.

After they returned, the Opposition members continued raising slogans in the Well of the House. Amid the din, the two taxation Bills were passed by voice vote.

Sports Bill passed

The Lok Sabha also passed the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025. These Bills were also introduced when the Opposition members were not present in the House. Two members spoke in support of the Bills. As the Opposition continued its protests later in the day, the Bills were passed by voice vote.

Earlier, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya, while taking up the two Bills for passage, said the government had made “several attempts” to bring forward legislation on sports governance. “In the coming days, when India is going to bid for the Olympics, it is important that our sports ecosystem is robust, transparent and accountable. This is a crucial step in that direction,” he said.

Against rules: Birla

When the House met in the morning, the Opposition members were on their feet, raising slogans and holding placards. Speaker Om Birla tried to run the Question Hour for about 10 minutes, but the Opposition members were relentless in their protests.

Mr. Birla then charged them of “systematically disrupting” the proceedings of the House for 14 days. “This is against the rules and regulations and against the democratic process. People elected you as their representatives to raise their issues and to fulfil their hopes and aspirations, but you are only protesting,” he said before the adjourning the House till 2 p.m.

Will pass important Bills: Rijiju

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju targeted the Congress-led Opposition for the repeated disruptions and asserted that the government would now proceed with the passage of important Bills in the Lok Sabha as well as the Rajya Sabha.

“Every day, we will not allow the country’s and Parliament’s time to be wasted on one issue. Therefore, we will pass important Bills,” Mr. Rijiju told reporters at a press conference in the Parliament complex.

The Minister said the government was keen to holding discussions on important Bills but repeated disruptions by the Opposition were leading to adjournments.

“You have raised an issue, do it for one day. What is the point in raising the same issue every day,” the Minister said.

Mr. Rijiju listed the Income Tax Bill, National Sports Governance Bill, Merchant Shipping Bill, the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, and the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill as priority for the government.

Itanagar:

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday asserted that the Arunachal Frontier Highway, which will connect 12 districts along the India-China boundary, will be a “game changer” for the border areas of the state.

Speaking at the 39th Statehood Day celebrations here, Rijiju said that nearly Rs 42,000 crore will be invested into the project which is the “highest allocation ever made by the Centre for a single project”.

On the occasion, Governor Lt Gen (Retd) K T Parnaik also said that the state has been on the path of development and the government is committed to boost the infrastructure.

Arunachal became a full-fledged state on February 20, 1987. Till 1972, it was known as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA). It gained Union Territory status on January 20, 1972 and was renamed as Arunachal Pradesh.

“The Frontier Highway is going to be the largest road project in the history of India. It is going to be around 1,400 kilometres long, and close to Rs 42,000 crore will be invested. It is going to transform the border areas of the state,” Rijiju said.

The Arunachal Frontier Highway (AFH), officially notified as the National Highway NH-913 and also called Bomdila-Vijaynagar Highway (BVH), will start from Bomdila and pass through Nafra, Huri and Monigong. The stretch will culminate at Vijaynagar, near the India-Myanmar border, officials said.

Key places the highway will connect are Tawang, Mago, Upper Subansiri, Upper Siang, Mechuka, Tuting, Dibang Valley, Kibithoo, Changlang and Dong.

The project includes an 800-km greenfield section and a network of new tunnels and bridges along the India-China border, the officials said.

The Union Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister, however, expressed concern over potential hurdles due to compensation issues.

“My appeal to the people is, please don’t try to inflate bills to claim compensation. Don’t create obstructions. If a land issue comes up, it will delay projects,” he said.

He cited the East-West Corridor, also known as the Industrial Corridor, which is “facing delays due to compensation and forest clearance issues”.

Rijiju said that prior to 2014, securing allocations for a single project was difficult, but after Prime Minister Narendra Modi assumed office, the situation changed.

“Arunachal Pradesh is the most resourceful state in the country, but for development, peace is a prerequisite,” the minister said.

Unfurling the national tri-colour at IG Park here, the governor acknowledged the state’s remarkable progress but also emphasised the need to address the ongoing challenges.

Parnaik stressed the importance of education, urging efforts to reduce dropouts and ensure all children complete their studies.

He stated that when students complete their education, Arunachal can nurture its own teachers, engineers and doctors, reducing dependence on other states.

Focusing on cleanliness and environmental management, Parnaik urged citizens to work in a mission mode to maintain hygiene and manage waste efficiently.

“A green and well-planned state must be free from illegal structures, encroachments, and unregulated construction,” he said and called for village volunteers to take responsibility for cleanliness and suggested using technological solutions to convert waste into power and useful products.

The governor stressed that roads and highways should inspire travellers and that community efforts should play a role in maintaining a clean and organised environment.

On the drug menace in the state, Parnaik called for a two-pronged approach – prevention and rehabilitation, since it is eroding the social fabric.

He suggested using satellite imagery to track the cultivation of illicit substances and urged parents, community leaders, and teachers to report cases of addiction.

On the occasion, Chief Minister Pema Khandu said the newly framed rules under the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA) 1978 are not intended to target any religious community but to safeguard the indigenous culture and beliefs of the people, regardless of religion.

Khandu emphasised that the formulation of these rules was in response to a directive from the High Court.

He explained that while the Act has been in place for 46 years, it lacked a formal set of rules, which is now being addressed.

“The intention behind the new rules is not to target any specific religious group, be it Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, or Muslims, but rather to offer greater support to the indigenous people of the state,” Khandu said.

Highlighting his government’s achievements, Khandu announced that within the next ten years, the state is expected to generate annual revenue of Rs 10,000 crore from free power and equity shares in power projects.

Following the state’s request, the Narendra Modi government has approved a 26 per cent equity share in all power projects, he said.

New Delhi:

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has urged travellers to be cautious after a group of tourists at Arunachal Pradesh’s Sela Pass ventured onto a frozen lake and fell into freezing waters. Captured on camera, the incident occurred in the snow-covered region known for its stunning winter views.

The group treaded onto the frozen lake, unaware of the dangers lurking beneath it. The ice suddenly gave away, eliciting screams from the people. Quick-thinking bystanders rushed to help, using bamboo sticks to pull the tourists to safety. “It’s okay, it’s okay,” they were heard reassuring the tourists. Four people, including two women, were stuck in the frozen lake, but all of them were rescued.

Sharing the video on X, Mr Rijiju, an Arunachal Pradesh native, urged travellers to “be aware” when visiting difficult terrains.

“At Sela Pass in Arunachal Pradesh. My advice to tourists: Walk on the Frozen Lakes with experienced people, drive carefully on slippery snow roads and be aware of snow avalanches. Temperatures is freezing so wear warm clothes and enjoy. Your safety is important,” he wrote.

The viral video has brought attention to the dangers of winter tourism.

A user wrote, “Pls provide a warning sign board should be there for the safety of people.”

Another wrote, “Over enthusiasm and lack of knowledge of local terrain prove to be fatal more often than not. They were lucky!”

In another video, Mr Rijiju spoke about driving in hilly, snow-covered areas.

Sela Pass, located at 13,700 feet in Arunachal Pradesh, is a scenic spot connecting Tawang Valley with the rest of the state. Known for its stunning views and frozen lakes, it attracts many tourists, especially in winter. \

The rugged terrain and unpredictable weather, including heavy snowfall, can make travel challenging, especially on slippery roads. The pass is also important for locals and military personnel.

Mr Birla, who arrived to inaugurate this match congratulated the MPs for taking part in the awareness game.

“The Parliament of India represents 140 crore people and expects that the society should benefit from the experience of the public representatives. We have to make India TB free by 2025 and this friendly match of MPs will work to spread awareness about TB eradication. I congratulate all the MPs participating in this match and the organiser of this program Anurag Singh Thakur ji that they have made a meaningful effort towards eradicating a disease like TB. If we all work with full determination to spread awareness about TB elimination in our respective areas, then we will definitely be successful in eradicating TB from India,” he said.

Piyush Goyal said, “First of all, I would like to congratulate Anurag Thakur ji, the organiser of this wonderful and successful program, who won everyone’s heart with his batting today and who brought so many MPs on one platform to spread awareness. Anurag ji had given a message against TB by organising a similar match in 2018 and after today’s match, I am hopeful that his resolution will go across the country and such matches will be organised in many other cities as well. I am sure that such events will give more strength to the resolution of the Hon’ble Prime Minister to make India TB free by 2025.

Mr Thakur said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has set a target of making India TB free by 2025. And to spread awareness towards achieving this target, selected MPs from all parties of the Indian Parliament participated in this friendly cricket match named TB Free India Awareness Cricket Match. “Our endeavour is that such events should continue to be held in the future and the state governments of various states should also come forward to spread awareness against TB through such events. The target of eradicating TB worldwide is 2031. If you see, from 2015 till now, there has been a 38 percent decline in TB-related deaths in India. There is an approximate 18 percent decline in new cases. It has decreased by approximately 8 percent worldwide. This means India is doing better than the world. Today, there is a treatment for it and the government also provides free medicines. It also gives Rs 1,000 for nutrition,” he added.

New Delhi:

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju today claimed that the alleged connections between Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and Hungarian-American businessman George Soros are a “serious” concern. Mr Rijiju said that such matters should not be viewed through a “political lens” and urged a united front against “anti-India forces.”

“It is an important issue that I want to raise without doing politics over it. The links between Sonia Gandhi and George Sores are serious. We do not want to see it by giving a political spin,” he said.

The BJP has alleged that Sonia Gandhi has ties with organisations financed by George Soros’s foundation. The ruling party claims that these entities have supported controversial stances, such as treating Kashmir as a separate entity.

The BJP claimed Sonia Gandhi’s past role as co-president of the Forum of Democratic Leaders in Asia Pacific (FDL-AP) Foundation, which allegedly shared views favouring Kashmir’s independence, is a matter of concern. Additionally, the party pointed to partnerships between the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and Soros-linked organisations as evidence of foreign influence in domestic affairs.

“We want to run parliament. I want to clarify that some issues are politically driven but if powers outside India are trying to defy India and fight against India then there are serious concerns,” Mr Rijiju said.

Mr Rijiju dismissed any intention to interfere in Congress’s internal politics but noted that questions about Rahul Gandhi’s leadership were being raised within the INDIA alliance.

“If Rahul Gandhi is not able to lead the INDIA bloc then it is their internal matter but we have heard that they are not on the same page,” he claimed.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey yesterday announced plans to confront Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in Parliament with 10 questions about these alleged ties. Mr Dubey accused Soros and the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) of working with opposition leaders to harm India’s economy and defame Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

Opposition Reaction

Opposition leaders have rejected the BJP’s allegations. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram dismissed the BJP’s allegations, terming them “dark fantasies” that should be confined to the “dark web”.

“These deep state theories should be confined to the dark web and not serious political discourse,” Mr Chidambaram told NDTV. “People have dark, morbid fantasies and they can continue to have them, and there will be no credence given to all these conspiracy theories. “We are always for the sovereignty and unity of India. We are patriots, we are nationalists and we are doing nothing that is against the integrity of India.”

Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav dismissed the accusations as a routine tactic by the BJP, stating, “It has become a habit of BJP to make false allegations. None of their allegations have turned out to be true till date.”

RJD MP Manoj Jha said that the BJP, instead of looking at conspiracy theories, should start probing the allegations.

“When the government and its top leadership started to look into conspiracy theories, it means there is something that they want to hide. You are in the government, get things investigated,” he said.

OCCRP And US Involvement

The BJP’s allegations have also drawn attention to the OCCRP, an investigative journalism platform partly funded by George Soros’s foundation. The party claims the OCCRP is involved in disseminating reports aimed at destabilisng India, such as allegations against the Adani Group.

“Rahul Gandhi’s press conference on Adani was live telecast by George Soros-funded OCCRP, which Gandhi used as a source to criticise Adani. It shows nothing but their strong and dangerous relationship and highlights their attempts to derail the Indian economy. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has publicly acknowledged George Soros as an ‘old friend’. It’s something truly noteworthy,” the BJP alleged.

The US government dismissed the BJP’s accusations, with a spokesperson from the US embassy describing them as “disappointing”, as reported by news agency PTI. The spokesperson clarified that US funding supports independent journalism but does not influence editorial decisions. BJP leaders, however, insist that the US “deep state” and Soros-funded organisations are colluding with the Opposition to weaken India’s economic and political stability.

Kiren Rijiju speaks at NDTV India Samvad Samvidhan 2024 Summit

New Delhi:

The Constitution is not only a static document but a journey, and it has been amended before, Union Minister Kiren Riiju said at the NDTV India Samvad Samvidhan 2024 Summit today.

Explaining how Prime Minister Narendra Modi worked hard and pushed for the celebration of the Samvidhan Diwas, or Constitution Day, Mr Rijiju said, “PM Modi has been a protector of the Constitution.”

Constitution Day will be celebrated on Tuesday.

“The Constitution is a book. However, as a citizen, we have to follow a way of life. Many people have given their views on the Constitution from time to time, and they are constructive views. People have also looked at the Constitution with different views at different points of time, amendments have been made too,” said the Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Minister.

“I am not going into minute details about the Constitution as it will be a lengthy discussion. But everyone knows that the Constitution is not a static document. It is a journey, which has seen changes and will see changes. Except for the basic principles which are at the core, which we cannot and should not touch, nothing is permanent in a democratic system,” Mr Rijiju said.

Recalling his long years as an MP and his stint as the Union Law Minister, Mr Rijiju said, “We don’t have full information about what happened during the framing of the Constitution. There were some small and big incidents. And there are matters which we have not paid attention to, which have not come into our attention prominently…”

He said the government will release two books on the Constitution on Tuesday.

“There are many interesting things about the Constitution. Before it was drafted, when there was no Constitution, what did people envisage how the Constitution would be? What did they imagine? They must have thought something about the future…” Mr Rijiju said, adding the two books will give a glimpse into the inspiration behind the drafting of the Constitution.

“For example, in Fundamental Rights, if there is a picture from the Bhagavad Gita, who added it and why… Such inspirations are interesting to study. The makers of the Constitution have given a lot of thought, looked into every possible aspect…” said Mr Rijiju, who was Union Law Minister in the Modi 2.0 government.

The Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Constitution, which came into effect from January 26, 1950. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in November 2015 notified the decision of the Modi government to celebrate November 26 as Constitution Day to promote Constitution values among citizens.

New Delhi:

The Winter Session of Parliament will be held from November 25 to December 20, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said in a post on X Tuesday afternoon.

A special event – to be held in the Central Hall – will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution will be held on the second day of the session – November 26, or Constitution Day.

This will be the first Parliament after a round of four state elections, including the first in a decade in Jammu and Kashmir in which the BJP finished behind the National Conference-Congress alliance. The BJP, however, secured some revenge by retaining Haryana for a historic third successive term.

The third and fourth elections – for Maharashtra, where the BJP is allied with Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction and the NCP group led by Ajit Pawar, and Jharkhand, where Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, a member of the Congress-led INDIA bloc, is in power – will be held next week.

Among the big-ticket bills likely to be tabled and/or debated or discussed are contentious amendments to the Waqf Bill and provisions for the government’s ambitious ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal.

The amendments to the Waqf Bill are currently being studied by a joint parliamentary committee headed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s Jagadambika Pal.

The committee is supposed to submit its report to Parliament by November 29.

However, the functioning of the JPC has been roiled in controversy after opposition MPs wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker this week warning that they could ‘dissociate’ themselves from the panel.

READ | Opposition MPs Write To Lok Sabha Speaker Over Waqf Bill Committee

The MPs accused Mr Pal of taking decisions regarding meeting dates and summons for consultations – unilaterally, and called his actions a “forceful way to mitigate (protests) and pass changes.

Last month Union Home Minister Amit Shah had indicated this bill could be tabled and passed in the next sitting of Parliament (referring to the Winter Session).

As far as the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal goes, a committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind cleared the way forward in March, submitting a report that proposed simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the first step.

NDTV Explains | ‘One Nation, One Election’. What Is It, How It Can Work

The ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal was part of the BJP’s manifesto in 2019, but has drawn heavy criticism from the opposition, who have red-flagged constitutional issues.

In the last Parliament session, the Monsoon Session, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget and MPs discussed various issues, including the landslides in Wayanad in Kerala.

The social system has deteriorated a lot, from political point of view as well, said Kiren Rijiju (File)

New Delhi:

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday expressed concern over “deterioration” in politics and said there used to be “wonderful discussions” in Parliament but today there is “so much noise” in the House. He also said that the people’s mindset has changed over the years and asserted there are “very few” people who appreciate good work.

“I have seen politics undergoing a change over the years. Today you can’t get votes even by doing good work…Nobody even listens if you talk about something good,” he added.

Kiren Rijiju was addressing an event, jointly organised by the Rashtriya Sewa Bharati and Sant Eshwer Foundation, to present awards to social workers for their outstanding service to the society.

“The social system has deteriorated a lot, from the political point of view as well. When we were young MPs, there used to be such wonderful discussions in the Parliament,” Kiren Rijiju said.

“Today being a parliamentary affairs minister, I keep thinking that when we became new MPs, we had such good ideas. There used to be discussions in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Today, there is so much noise that no one is ready to listen to those who speak well,” he said.

“I ask other MPs about it. I wouldn’t take any name because it’s not a political platform. They say the media doesn’t cover if you talk about good things. If you abuse and create ruckus in the Parliament, only then it becomes news,” he added.

The Union minister also expressed disappointment at the learning outcome of students.

“I come from the border area. During my childhood, there was no school and road there. We did not have any facilities. Teachers, especially from UP, Bihar, Bengal and Assam, used to come to our village on foot travelling four-five kilometers,” he said.

“What we were taught about values and society, we never forgot. But, today children study in convent and public schools. There are many schools where standard of education is very good. But, I think, somewhere or the other, a deficiency in the kind of education that one should acquire is visible,” he added.

Kiren Rijiju said that there are good people in society who think about building the future of the country but there is also a section who do not make any contribution and influence the society “in a wrong way”.

“Yet, they get a large number of followers on social media. I keep thinking what is the meaning of following such people. Are they ideal people?” he said, adding that people should follow a person only after knowing about his life and ideas.

False propaganda will lead to wrong narratives, said Zakir Naik. (File)

New Delhi:

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has accused fugitive Islamic preacher Zakir Naik of trying to mislead Indian Muslims and spreading “false propaganda” over the government’s Waqf Amendment Bill. The controversial preacher had said the proposed law bore “evil repercussions” and appealed to the Muslims to send in their rejections to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) of the Indian Parliament that is examining the Bill. Sharing a QR code and an URL to an online petition, he said at least 5 million Indian Muslims must send their rejections by September 13.

Mr Rijiju called Naik’s online post as “misleading” and “false propaganda”.

“Please do not mislead the innocent Muslims from outside our country. India is a democratic country and people have the right to their own opinion. False propaganda will lead to wrong narratives,” said the Union Minister.

Naik, wanted in India for alleged money laundering and hate speeches, had left the country in 2016.

The Waqf Amendment Bill envisages changes to the existing version on 44 points. This includes the inclusion of two non-Muslim persons, a Union Minister, three MPs and senior IAS officers in the Waqf board. The amendments also require the inclusion of women.

The Bill has been criticised as “draconian” by the Opposition parties, but the government said it would lead to transparency and benefits to women and children by protecting their inheritance.

The Waqf Board must use the money it receives for the welfare of widows, divorcees, and orphans the way the government suggests, according to the amendments.

Mr Rijiju had earlier said in the Parliament that the Waqf boards were captured by “some people” and the Bill was brought to give justice to the ordinary Muslims.

Hindenburg Research had released the report on Saturday.

New Delhi:

In the Centre’s first reaction to the latest report released by Hindenburg Research, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has said that the Congress and some of its allies want to destroy the country. The principal opposition party and others, he said, could not win the elections and are now aligning with anti-India forces.

On Saturday, Hindenburg Research, which is a US-based short-seller, released a report claiming that Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband, Dhaval, had a stake in offshore entities used in alleged financial wrongdoing by the Adani Group.

When he was asked about the report and the allegations made by the Congress, Mr Rijiju said on Monday, “We have to understand that there are many forces, both inside and outside the country, who are against India and work against it. We have to recognise them. The people who are playing games to hurt India’s ascent as an economic power… I feel that the Congress and some of its allies want to destroy the country. They could not defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi because the country is standing with him.”

“Elections have taken place and a new government has been formed under PM Modi. They could not win the elections and they are working with anti-India forces to ensure that India suffers a loss. They will never be successful because the people of India have realised who the anti-India forces are,” Mr Rijiju, who holds the Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs portfolios, added.

Earlier on Monday, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad took a similar stance and said the Congress is involved in creating economic instability and anarchy against India.

“After losing (the Lok Sabha elections) for a third time, the Congress and its closest ‘toolkit’ allies now want to make the Indian economy unstable. Congress today has developed hatred against India. What Congress wants is to bring back ‘control Raj'” Mr Prasad said.

The BJP leader also stressed that India is a safe, stable and promising market.

Character Assassination’

Madhabi and Dhaval Buch have accused Hindenburg Research of attempting a character assassination of the SEBI chairperson.

“Hindenburg has been served a show cause notice for a variety of violations in India. It is unfortunate that instead of replying to the show cause notice, they have chosen to attack the credibility of SEBI and attempt character assassination of the SEBI Chairperson,” the couple said in a statement.

The Adani Group has also said Hindenburg Research has made “recycled claims”.

“For a discredited short-seller under the scanner for several violations of Indian securities laws, Hindenburg’s allegations are no more than red herrings thrown by a desperate entity with total contempt for Indian laws,” the group said in an exchange filing.
