Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and ace men’s shuttler Kidambi Srikanth will continue their European grind at the Madrid Spain Masters tournament, beginning on Tuesday. Last year’s finalist Sindhu, seeded second here, will square off against Wen Yu Zhang of Canada in the round-of-32 contest, while seventh seed Srikanth will take on a qualifier. Sindhu will hope to go the distance after having suffered a heartbreaking loss to Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in the previous edition of the tournament. Srikanth, whose run in the recently-concluded Swiss Open Super 300 tournament came to an end after a semifinal defeat to Chinese Taipei’s Lin Chun-Yi, will hope to make an impact after bowing out of the race for the Paris Olympics.

Srikanth, who is playing his ninth tournament this season and had made his first final-four appearance in 16 months at the Swiss Open recently, will have the company of Kiran George and Sathish Karunakaran in the tournament.

Among other Indians in the fray, Ashmita Chaliha will play the opener against fourth-seeded and former world champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand, while Malvika Bansod will clash with Iris Wang of the United States for a place in the last-16.

This year’s All England Championships semifinalist Lakshya Sen has pulled out of the tournament. The fifth seed was scheduled to take on world No. 39 Takuma Obayashi of Japan but decided against competing in this event.

Sen reached the French Open quarterfinals but was knocked out in the second round at the Swiss Open.

Three Indian pairs figure in the main draw of the women’s doubles with fifth seeds Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand leading the charge. The duo is coming off a disappointing straight-game quarterfinal loss in the Swiss Open to Australia’s Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu.

The third-seeded Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa will also try their luck here after a second-round loss in Basel, while Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam is the third Indian women’s pair here.

In men’s doubles, Krishna Prasad Garaga and Sai Pratheek will open against fourth-seeded Canadians Dong Adam and Yakura Nyl, while eighth seeds M R Arjun and Dhruv Kapila will take on the Mexican duo of Job Castillo and Luis Armando Montoya Navarro.

Kidambi Srikanth’s Swiss Open 2024 journey came to an unfortunate end as India’s ace shuttler suffered defeat in the men’s singles semi-finals at the St. Jakobshalle arena in Basel. Srikanth lost 21-15, 9-21, 18-21 against world No. 22 Lin Chun-Yi of Chinese Taipei in the last-four match, which lasted one hour and five minutes. This was Srikanth’s first BWF semi-final appearance since November 2022. The former world number one Indian badminton player started the match off on a high note, winning the opening game 21-15 because of his offensive smashes and excellent net play.

However, in the second game, the 31-year-old Srikanth struggled to keep up with his opponent. Despite Srikanth’s 4-1 advantage in the second game, Chun-Yi swiftly made it 6-5.

When the score at 7-10, the Chinese Taipei shuttler went on to win seven straight points, putting the game out of Srikanth’s reach.

In the decider, Chun-Yi went on to take an aggressive approach early, taking a 4-1 lead. However, Srikanth had a slim 11-10 advantage at the halfway point.

The highly contested game was neck and neck until the finish when Chun-Yi broke away with three straight points with the score knotted at 16-16. Srikanth also made a few unforced errors, allowing his opponent to gain control of the game and win the tie.

Srikanth was the only remaining Indian shuttler in the Swiss Open. Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George were eliminated in the quarterfinals, while Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also failed to advance.

PV Sindhu’s performance in women’s singles concluded in the second round.

Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu progressed to the second round of the women’s singles competition but HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth faltered in the opening hurdle of men’s singles at the All England Championships on Tuesday. World No. 11 Sindhu, a former world champion, won the first game 21-10 but her German opponent, world No. 26 Li Yvonne Li, then decided to retire, paving the way for the Indian to the next round. The 28-year-old from Hyderabad is likely to next face top seed Korean An Se Young, who has proved her nemesis, having defeated her all six times they have crossed paths in international badminton. In fact, only once has Sindhu managed to take a game away from the world No. 1 Korean when they met last time at the Asia Championships in Dubai last year.

An Se Young, who is recovering from a right knee injury, secured her second title of the season at the French Open last Sunday.

Sindhu and Li seemed to have an initial battle when they were 4-4 but the Indian soon pulled away to grab a 11-7 lead at the break. She extended the advantage without much ado.

Eventually, a flick serve was dumped into the net by Li as Sindhu grabbed 11 game points and converted when the German went long.

In men’s singles, it was yet another bad day in office for world No. 8 Prannoy as he squandered an opening game advantage to go down 21-14 13-21 13-21 to Chinese Taipei’s Su Li Yang, ranked 32nd, for a second successive first-round exit following the loss at the French Open last week.

Later, Srikanth, who is racing against time to make it to Paris Olympics, sunk without a trace against top seed and world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen 9-21 9-21, leaving 2022 runner-up Lakshya Sen and Priyanshu Rajawat as the only contenders in men’s singles for the country.

The 23-year-old Sen will face Denmark’s Magnus Johannesen in his opening round on Wednesday.

Aakarshi Kashyap too bowed out with a 16-21 11-21 loss to Pai Yu Po of Chinese Taipei in the opening round.

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand will face Indonesia’s Apriyani Rahayu and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti later in the day. PTI ATK AM ATK AM AM

India’s Kidambi Srikanth progressed to the men’s singles second round with a stunning win over Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen but HS Prannoy fell short to make an early exit from French Open Super 750 badminton tournament in Paris on Wednesday. The world No 24 Srikanth, who is racing against time to qualify for the Paris Olympics, outwitted 14th-ranked Chen 21-15, 20-22, 21-8 in a 66-minute opening round clash for his third win over the Taiwanese shuttler in seven meetings.

In the next round, the 2021 world championships silver medallist Srikanth will fight it out against China’s world No 17 Lu Guang Zu, who ended the campaign of India’s HS Prannoy with a fine 21-17, 21-17 win at the adjacent court at the Arena Porte de la Chapelle here.

Srikanth was by far the better player as he roared back from 5-7 behind, winning 14 off the next 17 points to earn the bragging rights.

However, Chen produced a rearguard in the second game and managed to keep his nose ahead in time to take the match to the decider after a gruelling battle of nerves.

After the change of sides, Srikanth was back in his element as from 7-5, the Indian pocketed nine straight points to leave Chen far behind. The Taiwanese managed three points before the Indian banged the door on his face with the remaining five points.

In the adjacent court, Prannoy seemed on the road to glory only to to falter in the end as Guang Zu stole the show.

Prannoy moved to a 5-2 lead early in the opening game and though Guang Zu clawed back with three points, the Indian quickly changed gears to reestablish a three-point advantage at the break.

The duo engaged in some fierce rallies and Prannoy kept things tight for most part. The Chinese, however, kept snapping at the Indian’s heels keeping himself within two points, waiting for an opportunity.

It eventually arrived when Prannoy’s backhand went to net as the Chinese clawed back at 16-16 before moving to a lead with Prannoy erring again.

Guang Zu then pocketed the opening game by unleashing a quick return on his rival’s backhand.

Prannoy made an erratic start to the second game, falling 0-3 behind early. It was back to the grind for the Indian as he slowly drew parity at 6-6 with a few winners like the down-the-line smash on Guang Zu’s forehand.

But he also missed the lines, going long and wide a few times as the Chinese again capitalised on his errors to grab a 11-7 advantage at interval.

A determined Prannoy once again levelled terms with four straight points, the last being a lethal net kill.

The rallies starting getting fierce as the duo produce some sensational saves displaying great reflexes, but Guang Zu was a tad sharper and alert as he soon lead 19-15 with Prannoy now struggling to get a grip on the fast-paced rallies.

The Indian did win three straight point to keep hopes alive, before the Chinese grabbed three match points with a smash on his forehand and sealed it with another precise return on forecourt.

India’s ace shuttlers Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen bowed out of the French Open Super 750 tournament after losing their respective men’s singles matches Rennes on Wednesday. The first to take to the court at the Glaz Arena was Srikanth, who was shown the door by Toma Junior Popov of France. Srikanth lost the round of 32 match 17-21 15-21 in 44 minutes. It was an easy victory for the world number 25 French player as he punished the 22nd ranked Srikanth for his error-prone showing. Heading into this match, Srikanth had a 3-1 advantage over his opponent in head-to-head.

Soon after, it was Lakshya’s turn to suffer as he went down 15-21 18-21 to Arnaud Merkle, who is also from France and had lost to the Indian in their last meeting way back in 2016 when they were competing in juniors.

However, this was their first meeting on the BWF World Tour.

Lakshya lost his match in 55 minutes after appearing to stage a comeback of sorts in the second game when he led the Frenchman for a good part.

It turned out to be a forgettable day for the Indian squad as both their established stars went down in straight games.

The two badminton stars were coming here after suffering early exits in last week’s Denmark Open.

Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Aakarshi Kashyap advanced to the women’s singles second round but it was curtains for Kidambi Srikanth in the men’s event at the Denmark Open Super 750 badminton tournament in Odense on Tuesday.

While two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu struggled past world number 28 Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland 21-14 18-21 21-10 in a 56-minute opening round match, Aakarshi, ranked 38th, rallied her way to stun German’s world number 26 Li Yvonne 10-21 22-20 21-12 in another match.

Sindhu, who had reached the semifinals of Arctic Open last week, will face a tricky opponent in Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, seeded seventh, in the next round. The Indonesian has defeated her twice in the last three meetings this year though Sindhu has an overall 8-2 head-to-head record.

Aakarshi will also have her task cut out as she will square off against left-handed Thai Supanida Katethong next. The world number 19 Thai had defeated the Indian in their only meeting at Singapore Open this year.

For 2021 world championships silver medallist Srikanth, it turned out to be a disappointing day as his gallant fight ended with a 21-19 10-21 16-21 loss to China’s world number 22 Weng Hong Yang in the men’s singles opening round.

Recently-crowned Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty pulled out of the tournament and their opponents Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi of Malaysia advanced to the second round.

Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu sailed into the quarterfinals of the women’s singles event of the Arctic Open Super 500 badminton tournament, but it was curtains for Kidambi Srikanth in men’s singles in Vantaa on Thursday. Sindhu, seeded eighth here, took just 38 minutes to breeze past Chinese Taipei’s Wen Chi Hsu 21-11 21-10. Sindhu will next play Thuy Linh Nguyen of Vietnam. However, the tournament ended for Srikanth and Kiran George in men’s singles.

While Srikanth lost 15-21 12-21 against seventh seed Kanta Tsuneyama of Japan, George was shown the door by fourth seed Lu Guang Zu of China 10-21 20-22.

While the Indian challenge ended in men’s singles, Aakarshi Kashyap survived in the women’s singles event and will take on fifth seeded Chinese Wang Zhi Yi later in the day.

The lone Indian pair in women’s doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa also failed to progress to the quarterfinals, losing 19-21 19-21 against the French duo of Margot Lambert and Anne Tran.

Injured HS Prannoy’s absence hurt India as they went down fighting 2-3 against badminton powerhouse China to sign off with their first-ever silver medal in the men’s team championships at the Asian Games on Sunday. After world No. 7 Prannoy was ruled out due to a back injury, Lakshya Sen produced a gutsy show in the first singles and doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty then bossed over their opponents to put India 2-0 ahead. So, it was once again left to Srikanth to carry the team on his shoulders. The former world No. 1, who had produced a gritty show against South Korea in the semifinals, couldn’t go the distance this time despite a healthy lead and multiple game points as China fought back to make it 1-2.

(Asian Games 2023 Medals Tally | Asian Games 2023 Full Schedule)

The defending champions then won the remaining two matches to maintain their hegemony in the Asian Games.

With Prannoy missing the summit clash due to a back injury, Sen was handed the responsibility of leading the Indian charge.

Sen recovered from a mid-game slump to erase a five-point deficit in the decider and put India ahead with a 22-20 14-21 21-18 win over world No. 6 Shi Yuqi in an 83-minute opening slugfest.

World No. 3 men’s doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag then went on a smashing spree to outclass world No 2. Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang 21-15 21-18 in 55 minutes to extend the lead to 2-0. Srikanth, however, squandered an 18-14 lead and multiple game points in the first game to go down 22-24 9-21 against All England champion Li Shifeng in the third singles to expose India’s weakest link — the second doubles and third singles matches.

Scratch pair of Dhruv Kapila and Sai Pratheek Krishna Prasad then lost 6-21 15-21 to world No. 8 Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi, while Prannoy’s replacement Mithun Manjunath, ranked 53, went down 12-21 4-21 against world No. 20 Weng Hong Yang in the third singles as India finished second best.

Despite the loss, it is a creditable performance from the Indian team as it sealed India’s second silver medal in badminton at the continental championships with two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu winning the first in women’s singles in the 2018 edition.

The last time the Indian men won a badminton medal in the team championships was at the 1986 edition in Seoul where Sen’s mentors Prakash Padukone and Vimal Kumar played a crucial role.

India now has 11 badminton medals in the Asian Games, including three individual singles medals, one silver and three bronze in the men’s team, two women’s team bronze and one medal each in men’s doubles and mixed doubles.
