At least 11 people, who were on their way to attend a marriage, were killed and several were injured when the van they were travelling in plunged into a ravine in northwest Pakistan on Monday (May 11, 2026), rescue officials said.

The incident occurred in Malam Jabba, a popular tourist area, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Swat district.

Several women and children, including the groom’s mother, were among those who were killed in the incident, according to Rescue 1122.

The vehicle reportedly lost control and fell into a deep gorge, officials said. Locals in the area had launched a rescue operation on their own by the time medical teams and Government officials reached the spot.  The injured were taken to Saidu Sharif Hospital, the resuce officials said.

Rescue operations are typically difficult in the region due to its rugged mountainous terrain. Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Five terrorists were killed in operations conducted by security forces in Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the army said on Saturday (May 9, 2026).

Based on intelligence reports, the security forces initiated two separate operations in the Tank and Dera Ismail Khan districts on May 7 and 8, it said in a statement.

Four terrorists belonging to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed in the military engagement in the Tank district, the statement said.

In Dera Ismail Khan, another TTP member was killed in an exchange of fire with the security forces.

Weapons and ammunition have also been recovered from the possession of the slain terrorists, the statement said.

Pakistan has witnessed a surge in terrorist attacks, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, predominantly targeting the police, law enforcement agencies’ personnel, and security forces.

Attacks increased after the banned TTP broke a ceasefire agreement with the government in 2022.

Militants from the banned TTP rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a checkpost in northwest Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, killing 11 security personnel and a child, the military said on Tuesday (February 17, 2026).

TTP claimed responsibility for the deadly suicide attack on the FC check post in the Bajaur district bordering Afghanistan.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), “On February 16, a cowardly terrorist attack was attempted on security forces and law enforcement agencies’ joint check post in Bajaur District by Khwarij belonging to Fitna al Khwarij”.

Fitna-al-Khawarij is a term that the state uses for the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The statement by ISPR added that 12 terrorists were eliminated after security forces retaliated and “engaged the fleeing khwarij with precision”.

“In their desperation, the attackers rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the perimeter wall. Due to the impact of the blast, infrastructure collapsed killing eleven…” ISPR elaborated that the blast affected residential buildings in the area as well, “leading to the killing of one innocent young girl”.

Another seven people were injured, including women and children, the ISPR said.

“Sanitisation operations are being conducted to eliminate any other sponsored kharji found in the area as a relentless Counter Terrorism campaign under vision “Azm e Istehkam” (as approved by Federal Apex Committee on National Action Plan) by security forces and law enforcement agencies of Pakistan will continue at full pace to wipe out menace of foreign sponsored and supported terrorism from the country,” the statement added.

“The sacrifices of our brave soldiers and innocent civilians further reinforce our unwavering commitment to safeguarding our nation at all costs,” the statement concluded.

The development comes days after an additional station house officer was killed as terrorists attacked a police station in the War Mamund tehsil of Bajaur district.

In December 2025, a major-ranked officer was killed during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in the district. KP has seen a rise in terrorist attacks in the past year.

According to the Annual Security Report 2025 from the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), KP recorded a significant surge in violence last year as “fatalities rose from 1,620 in 2024 to 2,331 in 2025”.

This marked an “absolute increase of 711 deaths, accounting for over 82% of the net national rise and marking almost a 44% year-on-year surge in violence in the province”.

Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sohail Afridi, has taken notice of a suicide attack on an FC check post in the Malangi area of Mamond, Bajaur, and strongly condemned the incident.

In a statement, the Chief Minister said that the killing of security personnel in the terrorist attack, along with the tragic death of a child, is deeply saddening.

He directed rescue agencies to carry out immediate and comprehensive relief operations following the blast.

He added that the rescue efforts are being intensified to pull out those trapped under the debris.

The provincial government, he said, stands shoulder to shoulder with the families of those killed in their hour of grief.

The Chief Minister emphasised that such cowardly acts of terrorism cannot dampen the nation’s resolve. He stressed that a comprehensive and result-oriented strategy is indispensable for the complete eradication of terrorism.

He further stated that terrorism is a collective challenge for the entire country and assured that operations against elements inimical to peace will be further intensified across the province.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan on Wednesday (December 17, 2025) said it has shut down as many as 42 camps that had housed Afghan refugees for over 40 years.

Millions of Afghan refugees crossed into Pakistan after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, being a bordering province, hosted the largest number of these refugees for decades.

Authorities maintain that the closure of the almost 45-year-old refugee camps aims to streamline the system of refugee residence and registration in the province and to ensure the elimination of illegal and unregulated camp residents.

Official sources said on Wednesday (December 17) that the process of closure of the camps was carried out in two phases.

In the first phase, five refugee camps were closed, while the remaining 37 camps located across the province were closed in the second phase on Tuesday.

The provincial government has duly informed the federal government about the latest developments, the sources said.

The primary objective behind the closure of the camps was to take the repatriation of Afghan refugees to its logical conclusion, said officials.

Deployment of police and other law enforcement agencies was ensured during the closure drive, and action against unregistered Afghan refugees in line with government policy was taken.

Following the shutdown, the voluntary repatriation process has also gained momentum, with more than 3,00,000 refugees preparing their return to Afghanistan.

The officials described the closure of these refugee camps as a significant policy milestone in managing refugee affairs and restoring administrative order in the province.

At least four persons, including North Waziristan Assistant Commissioner, and two policemen, were killed when militants ambushed his vehicle in Pakistan’s northwestern Province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday (December 2, 2025), police said.

The attack in the Bannu district of the province, targeted a vehicle of Shah Waliullah, the assistant commissioner of North Waziristan.

Spokesperson for the Regional Police Office, Kashif Nawaz, said that the attack occurred within the jurisdiction of Cantt police station in the Bannu district.

Waliullah was killed after his vehicle came under attack on Tuesday (December 2, 2025). Two constables and a local were also killed while two other police officials sustained injuries, police said.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Bannu.

He expressed deep sorrow over the killing of the Assistant Commissioner, two other police personnel and a local in the attack.

He has sought a detailed report of the incident from the Inspector General of Police.

Terming the incident extremely tragic, the chief minister said that “anti-state elements cannot undermine our resolve through such cowardly acts.” He added that the sacrifices of those killed will not go in vain and that those involved in the attack will be brought to justice.

Pakistan has witnessed an uptick in terrorist incidents in recent months, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and Balochistan, after the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in 2022.

Following the breakdown of the truce, the TTP had vowed to target security forces, police, and other law enforcement personnel.

Eight TTP terrorists were killed and five others injured on Friday (October 24, 2025) during an intelligence-based operation in Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police said.

The operation was carried out in the Wanda Sheikh Allah area of Lakki Marwat district.

Eight terrorists belonging to the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan were killed and five others were injured in the operation, police said.

In a separate incident, unknown assailants blew up a newly constructed government girls’ primary school in Tank district, bordering South Waziristan, on Friday.

The incident took place at Gara Budha village in Sial Gul Korona, police said.

No casualties were reported as the building was unoccupied at the time of the blast.

Security officials suspect the involvement of militants aiming to disrupt the rise of education and literacy, particularly girls’ education, in the region.

No group has claimed responsibility for the school bombing as yet. However, splinter groups of TTP active in the Tank district are against girls’ education and usually target their schools.

Over 450 schools in the province have been destroyed in such attacks over the last decade, forcing students to either quit education or attend classes next to ruined buildings or the rubble, as per data collected by local NGOs.

Pakistan witnessed multiple attacks on girls’ schools until 2019, especially in the Swat Valley and former tribal areas under the control of TTP.

In 2012, the insurgents attacked Nobel prize winner Malala Yousafzai, a teenage student and advocate for the education of girls.

Pakistan has lately been witnessing a rise in terrorist activities, mainly in provinces bordering Afghanistan.

As many as 298 people died due to terrorism so far this year in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to a Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) report published on Thursday.

The report said that till October 22, 117 police personnel and 181 civilians were killed in various terrorist incidents across the province, bringing the total number of lives lost to 298, while 486 others sustained injuries.

As per the data, across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 2,366 intelligence-based operations were conducted in which 1,124 militants were arrested and 368 terrorists were gunned down.

The report stated that 6,181 suspects were charged in different terrorism-related cases during the year.

Action against extortion rackets also intensified, with 1,287 cases being registered till now this year, and 209 suspects were charged, while 52 others were apprehended during operations.

Militants armed with assault rifles attacked a security post in restive northwest Pakistan early on Tuesday (December 31, 2024), killing a police officer and a civilian, officials said.

Another officer was also wounded in the attack at the Draban Post in Dera Ismail Khan, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, local police official Abdullah Khan said, adding that the civilian was an employee of the Customs department.

He also said security forces returned fire and that “a group of insurgents” fled the scene.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack but suspicion was likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban, also known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, who often target security forces across the country, especially in the former tribal regions in the troubled northwest bordering Afghanistan.

Security forces have also stepped up intelligence-based operations against the Pakistani Taliban, emboldened since the Afghan Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021. The TTP is a separate group but a close ally of the Afghan Taliban.
