Pathum Nissanka made 89 to lead a strong Sri Lankan batting effort on the second day of the second Test against South Africa at St George’s Park on Friday. Sri Lanka were 242 for three at the close in reply to South Africa’s first innings of 358. Opening batsman Nissanka seemed set for his third Test century before he charged down the wicket against left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj, missed an attempted big hit and was bowled. Until then, Nissanka’s only blemish was a missed chance to David Bedingham at first slip off Kagiso Rabada when the batsman had 22. Nissanka faced 157 balls and hit 11 fours and a six.

Nissanka shared stands of 41 with Dimuth Karunaratne (20), 109 with Dinesh Chandimal (44) and 49 with Angelo Mathews, who finished the day on 40 not out.

Kamindu Mendis joined Mathews after Nissanka was dismissed and batted brightly to make 30 not out in an unbeaten partnership of 43.

South Africa earlier added 89 for the loss of their last three wickets after resuming on 269 for seven. Wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne needed just 49 balls to go from his overnight 48 not out to 105 not out.

Verreynne and Kagiso Rabada (23) put on 56 for the ninth wicket and last man Dane Paterson (9) helped Verreynne add 33 before he was last man out, caught off an attempted slog against Lahiru Kumara.

South Africa have climbed to fourth spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings after a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first Test on Thursday. The Proteas improved their point-percentage to 47.62 with the victory, which helped them jump over New Zealand and England and take fourth place on the standings. Bangladesh’s loss sees their point-percentage drop to 30.56 and they continue to languish in seventh place with India and Australia still remaining in the top two spots on the standings.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to bat first but the decision backfired as South Africa’s pacers and spinners thrived in favourable conditions, bowling out Bangladesh for a mere 106. Kagiso Rabada, Wiaan Mulder, and Keshav Maharaj each claimed three wickets.

Bangladesh’s spinners fought back, with Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan sharing seven wickets between them. However, a resilient century from Kyle Verreynne, supported by Mulder (54) and Dane Piedt (32), helped South Africa build a commanding 202-run lead.

In the third innings, South Africa’s bowlers, led by Rabada, once again dominated, reducing Bangladesh to 112/6. Mehidy Hasan (97) offered strong resistance, forming crucial partnerships with the lower order to push the total to 307. Rabada ended with impressive figures of 6/46, his best in Asia.

Chasing 106, South Africa faced little difficulty, with Tony de Zorzi (41) and Tristan Stubbs (30*) guiding them to a seven-wicket victory.

The second Test between Bangladesh and South Africa will be played from October 29 in Chattogram.

South African cricket coach Shukri Conrad on Monday named three spin bowlers in a 15-man squad to play two Tests in Bangladesh next month. The squad was announced on the same day that it was confirmed that South Africa will play Test matches in Dhaka and Chattogram.  The decision was taken following a security assessment by a South African delegation in the country — more than 200 people died in political protests in Bangladesh earlier this year. Left-arm spinner Senuran Muthusamy was recalled to the squad for the first time since March 2023. He will join fellow left-armer Keshav Maharaj and off-spinner Dane Piedt. Only three specialist seam bowlers -– Kagiso Rabada, Nandre Burger and Dane Paterson -– were selected, along with seam bowling all-rounder Wiaan Mulder.

Conrad said he had discussed conditions in Bangladesh with Russell Domingo, a South African who was head coach of Bangladesh from 2019 to 2022.

“We are likely to play three seamers maximum in Dhaka and Chattogram,” said Conrad.

“At this stage it is likely to be Kagiso, Nandre and Wiaan as the all-rounder, with Dane Paterson available if conditions are suitable.”

Conrad said it was also likely that only two spinners would be in the starting line-up. “We are lucky that Keshav Maharaj can bowl a lot of overs but Senuran will be there as back-up.”

Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi was the only player dropped from the squad that beat the West Indies 1-0 in a Test series in the Caribbean in August.

Conrad said he believed South Africa would need to win five of their six remaining Tests in the current world Test championship in order to qualify for the final in England next year.

After Bangladesh, they will play Sri Lanka and Pakistan in two-match series during the South African home season in December and January.

Conrad said he expected Bangladesh to provide stern opposition after they beat Pakistan recently, while Sri Lanka were serious contenders for a place in the championship final.

“It’s encouraging for world cricket that it’s not only about the big three,” said Conrad.

“Bangladesh will be match ready. They’ve beaten Pakistan and are playing tough opposition against India. It will be Shakib Al Hasan‘s last series and they will want to send him out on a high but we will be there to try to spoil the party.”

The South African squad will assemble in Pretoria on October 12 and depart for Bangladesh on October 15.

South African squad: Temba Bavuma (captain), David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Nandre Burger, Tony de Zorzi, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Senuran Muthusamy, Dane Paterson, Dane Piedt, Kagiso Rabada, Tristan Stubbs, Ryan Rickelton (wkt) and Kyle Verreynne (wkt).

Fixtures:

October 21-25, first Test in Dhaka

October 29-November 2, second Test in Chattogram

South Africa defeated the West Indies by 40 runs on an eventful third day of the second and final Test on Saturday to extend their dominance over the Caribbean side. Set a challenging target of 263 after fast bowler Jayden Seales‘ Test-best figures of six for 61 dismissed the Proteas for 246 in their second innings in the morning session, the home team lost wickets at regular intervals to be dismissed for 222. In a cruel twist of fate, Seales was the last wicket to fall just minutes before the scheduled close of play. He fell to man of the series Keshav Maharaj who claimed his 13th wicket of the two-match duel via a short-leg catch by David Bedingham.

The win extended South Africa’s unbeaten Test series run against the West Indies from the first-ever series meeting between the two teams in 1998/99 when Shaun Pollock‘s men demolished the visitors led by Brian Lara 5-0.

West Indies had defeated South Africa in a one-off encounter in Barbados in 1992, their first-ever official Test encounter which marked the Africans’ return to the Test fold after 22 years in isolation because of the country’s apartheid policy.

Maharaj’s left-arm orthodox spin earned him figures of three for 37.

Kagiso Rabada shared bowling hours in the innings with three for 50, leaving the 29-year-old fast bowler one wicket away from claiming 300 victims in Tests.

“For a team that is in a transition phase we really did well to come away with this success,” said a delighted Maharaj, whose three wickets lifted him one above Hugh Tayfield’s 170 as the most successful spinner in South Africa’s Test history.

“Getting ready for Test cricket is always part of my plan, no matter what other formats I play. I always have a red ball in my bag.”

Maharaj was full of praise for his captain, Temba Bavuma, and his refreshing confidence in slow bowlers.

“He trusts spin and backs spin,” he explained.

“He allows me to read the game and brings his input as well. It’s a privilege to be in a side led by him.”

South Africa’s only period of anxiety came during a 77-run seventh-wicket partnership between Gudakesh Motie, who top-scored with a Test-best effort of 45 and wicketkeeper-batsman Joshua da Silva (27).

They lifted their team from the depths of 104 for six in mid-afternoon but the reintroduction of Maharaj brought the vital breakthroughs when he trapped Motie and da Silva lbw in successive overs.

Bavuma then held a stunning leaping catch at mid-on off Shamar Joseph to give Rabada his 299th Test wicket before Maharaj completed the job despite a few lusty blows at the other end by Jomel Warrican (25 not out).

Wiaan Mulder took the man of the match award, the seam bowling all-rounder making the most of a rare opportunity to play Test cricket by claiming six wickets in the match and also contributing an important 34 runs in the second innings.

“I just wanted the chance to play because I haven’t played much Test cricket of late,” he said.

“I just tried to bowl as many wobble seam balls as I could because I felt there was enough in the conditions for the ball to swing naturally as well.”

Mulder’s was the first wicket to fall at the start of the day when Warrican had him leg-before.

After that it was the Seales show as he ripped through the lower-order to claim the second five-wicket innings haul of his fledgling Test career.

For West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite, one of Mulder’s two wickets in the innings, the fate of the match hinged on the failure of the batting line-up in the first innings.

“We did well to dismiss them for 160 but then didn’t put up enough runs in reply. That was crucial,” he emphasised.

“Our mindset today was to have intent at the crease and even though myself and the other top-order batters didn’t deliver, it was good to see the fight from Motie and others lower down the order.”

The first Test in Trinidad last week ended in a rain-affected draw.

West Indies vs South Africa 2nd Test, Live Updates: West Indies will be taking on South Africa in the second Test of the two-match series on Thursday in Guyana. Earlier on Sunday, the first match of the series ended in a draw after rain played a spoilsport. Alick Athanaze missed out on a maiden Test century but played the key role in ensuring the safety of a draw for the West Indies. Set the unlikely victory target of 298 after the Proteas declared their second innings at 173 for three just before lunch, Atahanze’s determined 92 and a fifth-wicket partnership of 65 with Jason Holder (31 not out) guided the hosts from the discomfort of 127 for four just after tea to 201 for five at the end of play. Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada combined on Saturday to earn South Africa a healthy first innings lead over the West Indies with the visitors attempting to defy the impact of inclement weather in seeking to force an unlikely victory going into the final day of the first Test of a two-match series in Trinidad. Steady rain restricted play to just the final session on the fourth day but in that time South Africa dismissed the home side for 233 in the first innings and then made their intentions clear in reaching 30 without loss off five overs in the second innings at the close.

With an overall lead of 154 runs and all ten wickets in hand, the Proteas will be hoping for a full day’s play on Sunday for their batsmen to try and at least lay the platform which will give the bowlers a chance to put the Caribbean side under pressure in the final innings of this truncated match.

“Hopefully we can get a full day because that will obviously give us a realistic chance of getting a result,” said South Africa captain Temba Bavuma after his team made the most of the limited playing time on day four.

“To use the old cliche, we will have to take care of the first hour to set it up and if it’s going our way then we can throw caution to the wind to see what happens.

“But it’s imperative that we set it up in that first hour,” he added.

Resuming at 145 for four, Kavem Hodge and Jason Holder extended their fifth-wicket partnership to 49 only for Aiden Markram‘s occasional off-spin to achieve the breakthrough when he bowled Holder for 36.

Maharaj then claimed his fourth wicket of the innings when he quickly removed Joshua da Silva before Kagiso Rabada, who was kept waiting to use the second new ball as Bavuma gave Maharaj and Markram a chance for more success, triggered a collapse with three quick wickets.

Kavem Hodge and Gudakesh Motie both fell to sharp slip catches while Kemar Roach was trapped leg-before as the fast bowler lifted his tally of Test wickets to 294 in his 63rd match, all before his 30th birthday.

It was left to Jomel Warrican, the leading wicket-taker in South Africa’s first innings with four for 69, to show his worth with the bat in belting an unbeaten 35 off 32 balls with three fours and two sixes to extend the total beyond the 200-run mark.

Lungi Ngidi replaced a frustrated Rabada and immediately wrapped up the West Indies innings by bowling last man Jayden Seales, whose mood was not helped when Tony de Zorzi was dropped at slip driving at the fast bowler in the last over of the day.

It now remains to be seen if the weather will be kind enough to allow de Zorzi and opening partner Markram the chance to make the final day an intriguing one despite the loss of so much playing time over the first four days.
