The 1,302 sq. km Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, acknowledged as the world’s safest address of the one-horned rhinoceros, has a new attraction—an orchid centre.

On Tuesday (March 3, 2026), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Kaziranga Orchid Park in the Kohora area of the rhino habitat. Spread across 20 bighas or 6.6 acres, the park houses more than 1,600 species of orchids.

He said that the orchid park was an example of the Bharatiya Janata Party-led State government walking the talk. “We announced our plans to set up this park in 2021. I am glad to have inaugurated it five years later,” he said.

Mr Sarma hoped that the park, offering interpretation for students and traditional cuisine, among other facilities, would become a major tourist attraction. “Kaziranga receives more than 1 lakh tourists in a season. By offering them more attractions, we hope to make them spend at least three days here,” he said, attributing the establishment of the part to the efforts of Agriculture Minister Atul Bora.

Mr. Bora is the president of the Assam Gana Parishad, one of the BJP’s three regional allies. The two others are the Bodoland People’s Front and the United People’s Party Liberal.

The inauguration of the orchid park coincided with the announcement of a new hybrid orchid developed by Sikkim-based expert Mohan Pradhan after eight years of research and cross-breeding. This hybrid orchid has been named ‘Seujia Kaziranga’.

‘Seujia’ means ‘green’ in Assamese.

In a video that has gone viral now, locals can be heard shouting to scare off the animal

New Delhi:

A biker died after being chased and attacked by a rhino near the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Morigaon district on Sunday. The victim, Saddam Hussain, was a resident of the Kamrup Metropolitan district, about 30 kilometers from the place of the incident.

The 37-year-old was traveling on his two-wheeler when the rhino, which had strolled out of the wildlife sanctuary, approached him.

In a video that has gone viral, he can be seen quickly getting down from his bike and running into an open field as the animal, which can run up to 55 kilometers an hour, chases him.

Locals can be heard shouting to scare off the rhino, which can weigh up to 2,800 kilograms.

Hussain was later found with his head smashed in the field.

“The rhino came out of the wildlife sanctuary. We are investigating the incident,” a forest official told the news agency ANI.

Located in the suburbs of Assam’s capital Guwahati, the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is known for holding the highest density of one-horned rhinos in the country.

Data released this month on World Rhino Day said that India’s one-horned Asian rhino population has almost tripled in the past four decades.

The number of animals has surged from 1,500 four decades ago to more than 4,000 now.

An adult Indian rhino, the largest of the three Asian species, can live for about 50 years.

Kaziranga National Park in Assam is home to an estimated 80 percent of the world’s one-horned rhinos.

The animal mortality includes 23 hog deer due to drowning in the Park and 15 during treatment.

Guwahati:

A total of 31 animals have died so far due to drowning, while 82 others have been rescued from flood waters in the worst deluge in recent years inside the famed Kaziranga National Park, a park official said on Thursday.

The animal mortality includes 23 hog deer due to drowning in the Park and 15 during treatment.

The forest officials rescued 73 hog deer, two otters, two sambar deer, a scops owl, one rhino calf, an Indian hare and a jungle cat.

Currently, 20 animals are under treatment, while 31 others have been released after treatment, the official said.

A total of 11 animals had died due to drowning, while 65 others were rescued from the flood waters of the severely affected park till Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a Royal Bengal Tiger strayed into a neighbouring village in the Nagaon district from the flooded park and forest officials were trying to tranquilise the animal.

Police personnel were deployed to prevent any untoward incident, and control the people as panic gripped the village area.

Two persons were arrested for allegedly consuming venison, likely deer which had strayed from the Northern range of the Park in the Biswanath district.

Out of the total 233 camps in the Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, 95 were still inundated till Thursday evening as against the 141 during the day, the official said.

Forest department employees, including security personnel, stay in these camps inside the national park to conduct patrolling to protect the flora and fauna.

In the Eastern or Agoratoli range, 12 of the 34 camps have been inundated, while 31 of the 58 camps in the central range, 33 out of the 39 in the Western or Bagori range, eight out of the 25 in Burapahar and three out of the nine in Bokakhat were under flood waters.

Altogether seven camps have been vacated by the forest personnel so far – two in the central range, three in Bokakhat, and one each in Biswanath and Nagaon wildlife divisions.
