Jewellery shop owner held for false complaint

An investigation by the Belagavi police revealed that a jewellery shop owner who had claimed that his shop was burgled had committed the offence only to file a false complaint.

Investigators from the Khade Bazar Police arrested the complainant, Krishnanand Vishwanath Vernekar, for staging the midnight heist in V. P. Vernekar & Sons, a shop he owned.

He later complained that unidentified miscreants had forced open his door and run away with the loot. Police recovered valuables of around ₹65.95 lakh, including: Gold ornaments weighing 519.8 grams, valued at ₹62,60,990; Silver ornaments weighing 31 grams, valued at ₹6,000; Cash amounting to ₹2,83,010; The scooter used in the offence, valued at ₹45,000.

The earlier complaint included charges under Sections 331(4) and 305(A) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and initiated an investigation. The First Information is being modified to include the new offence of false claims and misleading the police.

During the course of the investigation, police found inconsistencies in the complainant’s version of events. Further interrogation led police to a scooter (KA-22/EW-4822), in which the alleged stolen property was allegedly concealed.

The case was investigated under the supervision of Khadebazar Police Inspector M. K. Dhamannavar. PSI S. R. Mutattatti, along with police personnel A.B. Shetty, Santosh Baragi, B. L. Sarvi, Channappa Teli, Aarti Heggannavar, Sunil Chavan, Sadashiva Halagimani, Prakash Madar, and teams from the Fingerprint Unit, Technical Section, and SOCO Section, were involved, said a release.

Man accused of murdering 21-year-old woman in Bantwal bus stand caught

The Bantwal Town police on July 17 got hold of Chethan, 22, who allegedly hacked 21-year-old Lavanya to death in the KSRTC bus stand at B. C. Road on July 16.

The police said that the accused had consumed rat poison and was admitted to a hospital.

Chethan, police said, is from Odilnala in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada.

According to witnesses, the victim had boarded a KSRTC bus bound for Kakkepadavu. She later got down from the bus, following which the accused also alighted and attacked her with a machete. Though passers-by immediately rushed the victim to the Bantwal taluk government hospital, she was declared to be brought dead by doctors.

Police identified the victim as Lavanya, a resident of Kakkepadavu village in Bantwal taluk. She was working in a private hospital at Kalladka. She was on her way back home at the time of the attack.

Police sources said that the attack was the outcome of unrequited love.

After attacking the victim, the assailant left the weapon behind and ran away from the bus stand. A video of the man attacking the woman with the machete and escaping from the area after she collapsed is widely being circulated on social media.

Man Arrested For Killing Father, Staging Accident To Claim Insurance Money

Police have arrested four accused, including the son, for staging an accident after killing a man, in order to claim the insurance money.

The incident occurred in July 2024.

Speaking to reporters here on Monday, Superintendent of Police, Kalaburagi district, Adduru Srinivasulu said the father, Kalingaraya, was giving a pillion ride to his son, Sathish, when the son asked him to stop so that he could urinate.

Kalingaraya stopped near Bennur crossing and was waiting for his son when one of Sathish’s accomplices, Arun, ran a tractor over Kalingaraya and killed him.

Sathish then lodged a complaint and claimed the insurance money, said Srinivasulu.

Woman Kills Husband, Cuts Body Into 2 Pieces In Karnataka

A woman was arrested for killing her drunkard husband, said the police.

She allegedly strangled him first, then smashed his face with a stone and cut his body into two pieces to haul it far away from her house, they said.

According to Belagavi Superintendent of Police Bhimashankar Guled, the pieces of the body of 40-year-old Srimantha Itnali were found on December 10 in Umarani village, Chikkodi taluk of Belagavi.

“A three-member team led by the deputy superintendent of police camped in the village and investigated the case,” said the SP, addressing a press meet on Thursday.

After a false start, they zeroed in on the wife, Savithri, and she was brought to the station for questioning.

“Initially, she didn’t agree but later she confessed to her crime,” added the SP.

According to him, the incident took place on December 8.

The man, a drunkard, often used to abuse his wife for money, said the police.

On the day of the murder, he was fighting with her over a piece of land she owned.

“He wanted his wife to sell the land and buy him a new motorbike.” Unable to take it anymore, the wife had allegedly confessed that she killed him that night while he was sleeping outside.

“She first strangled him and when he was unconscious, used a boulder lying nearby to smash his face. She then disposed of the boulder in a well,” the SP said.

To make it easy for transportation, she cut the body into two pieces, and carried it in a barrel.

“She disposed of the barrels too in the well, later,” added Guled.

The accused has been taken into custody.
