A captain’s knock by Charith Asalanka steered Sri Lanka to a hard-fought four-wicket victory over New Zealand with six balls to spare in Saturday’s T20I opener in Dambulla. Chasing a modest 136 to win, Sri Lanka’s batsman struggled to capitalise against the second-string visiting team. But a crucial 38-run stand for the sixth wicket between Asalanka and Wanindu Hasaranga steadied the ship and inched the team to victory. “Overall it is a good win,” Asalanka said. “We should have restricted them to 110 or 120 but they did well with the lower order.”

The stand was broken when Hasaranga went for a big shot off Zakary Foulkes but fell short, caught at mid-on by Kiwi captain Mitchell Santner and departing for 22.

Left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage, who took three of New Zealand’s wickets after the tourists opted to bat, sealed Sri Lanka’s win in style when he pulled Jacob Duffy for a six over mid-wicket.

Asalanka finished unbeaten on a well-judged 35 off 28 balls.

New Zealand’s below-par total had given Sri Lanka some breathing room.

Top-order batsman Kusal Perera etched his name in the record books, surpassing Tillakaratne Dilshan to become Sri Lanka’s highest run-scorer in T20s with his quickfire 23 off 17 balls.

New Zealand’s 135 all out was the third-lowest total in T20Is in Dambulla.

“It is a challenge to adjust to conditions,” Santner said.

“At halfway we felt that we can defend it but a couple of partnerships took it away from us.”

“We were expecting 160 after winning the toss but the dew settled in and it was hard to hold the ball and that’s probably food for thought tomorrow.”

Fresh from a commanding red-ball series win in India, the tourists arrived in the island nation missing Tom Blundell, Rachin Ravindra and other stalwarts who are resting for an upcoming Test battle against England.

All-rounder Michael Bracewell showed some fight with 27 off 24, including two fours and a six.

New Zealand managed to go past 100 after a gutsy 39-run stand for the ninth wicket between Ish Sodhi and Foulkes.

Foulkes, joint top-scorer with 27 off 16, hit a four and a six to help the Kiwis salvage some pride before Sodhi’s departure on 10 in the final over.

New Zealand handed a debut to wicketkeeper-batsman Mitchell Hay, who was caught off a Matheesha Pathirana delivery on his second ball for nought.

The second and final match of the series is at the same venue on Sunday.

Charith Asalanka Happy To Have ‘Good Headache’ With Sri Lanka’s Batting Resurgence https://artifex.news/asalanka-happy-to-have-good-headache-with-sri-lankas-batting-resurgence-6885672/ Sun, 27 Oct 2024 12:41:41 +0000 https://artifex.news/asalanka-happy-to-have-good-headache-with-sri-lankas-batting-resurgence-6885672/ Read More “Charith Asalanka Happy To Have ‘Good Headache’ With Sri Lanka’s Batting Resurgence” »

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka is happy to have a ‘good headache’ with the resurgence of their batters in the limited-overs format. They registered their third consecutive white-ball series with the 2-1 victory over West Indies in the ODI series on Saturday. Previously, they won the T20I series against the Windies before defeating India in the ODI series. For Sri Lanka, opener Nishan Madushka’s form came as a surprise as the batter scored 38 and 69 in the two ODIs that the team won after coming in place of injured Pathum Nissanka, who struck a half-century upon his return to the side in the final ODI against West Indies.

With Madushka, Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (who smashed a 19-ball fifty in the rain-shortened third ODI), Avishka Fernando, and even Kusal Perera, there is now intense competition for spots in the top three, all among batters in solid form.

Asalanka feels the recent performances of the top-order batters will give the team management a tough time in selecting the squad ahead.

“I’m very happy about Nishan Madushka’s form. If we have a player in that kind of form on the bench, that’s a big win for us. Now when we go into a selection meeting, we’ve got good headaches. The selectors, coach, and I have a tough time choosing a team,” Asalanka said after the series win.

“At the moment we’re in the process of devising a system where we give players a good enough run in the team, and then also give others a turn. That’s why today Nishan Madushka was dropped and we brought Pathum Nissanka back – there’s no point talking much about Nissanka, we know he’s been a special player for two or three years. Avishka played really well in the last series, so we needed to give him his place as well. But we now have a lot more hope about Nishan as well.”

“If we have a player in that kind of form on the bench, that’s a big win for us. Now when we go into a selection meeting, we’ve got good headaches,” added Asalanka on Madushka’s form.

Asalanka, who was named Player of the ODI Series against the West Indies for his scores of 77 and an unbeaten 62 in the first two matches, credited the NSL for his revival during the recent tour.

“In the last series, against India, I wasn’t in form. He’d made 49 across three ODI innings. But I played the NSL tournament and got an excellent result out of that. We’ve got to thank the board for holding the NSL. It’s a tournament that has a competitive level of cricket. And that’s for any player, whether you’re in the national team or not. It’s a place where you can gain form, build up your game, and come up,” he said.

Sri Lanka will now face New Zealand in two T20Is and three ODIs, starting on November 9 in Dambulla. After that, the team will fly to South Africa to play two Tests from November 27.

Skipper Charith Asalanka struck an unbeaten half-century as Sri Lanka defeated the West Indies by five wickets in the second one-day international on Wednesday to clinch the three-match series. Chasing a tricky 190, Sri Lanka reached the target with 34 balls to spare at the Pallekele stadium, with Asalanka making an unbeaten 62 off 61 balls. The match was reduced to 44-overs a side after the start was delayed by two hours because of rain. Sri Lanka lost two early wickets but they were rescued by a third wicket stand of 62 between Nishan Madushka (38) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (38).

Asalanka then saw the team through with his doughty knock that included one six and seven fours.

He also brought up his 14th ODI half-century in the process and shared a stand of 55 with Janith Liyanage (24) for the fifth wicket.

This was Asalanka’s second consecutive half-century, following his match-winning 77 in the first ODI.

The victory secured a 2-0 series win for the hosts, having won the opening game by five wickets on Sunday.

This was the fifth successive bilateral ODI series win for Sri Lanka this year and the tenth consecutive home series victory.

The third and final match will be played at the same venue on Saturday.

Earlier, Sherfane Rutherford (80) shared a record 119-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Gudakesh Motie (50 not out) to lift West Indies from a precarious 58-8 after they were put in to bat in overcast conditions.

This was the highest ninth-wicket partnership for West Indies in one-day internationals, eclipsing the 85-run stand between Yannic Cariah and Alzarri Joseph against New Zealand in Barbados in 2022.

Rutherford, dropped twice on 23 and 72, hit four sixes and seven fours in his 82-ball knock for his second successive half-century of the series and his career-best ODI innings.

Motie’s maiden ODI half-century included six fours, before the visitors were bowled out in the 36th over.

Leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga claimed 4-40 on a pitch that offered variable bounce and turn.

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, Asia Cup 2023: Matheesha Pathirana Sets Up Big Win For Sri Lanka https://artifex.news/bangladesh-vs-sri-lanka-asia-cup-2023-matheesha-pathirana-sets-up-big-win-for-sri-lanka-4346502/ Thu, 31 Aug 2023 16:43:50 +0000 https://artifex.news/bangladesh-vs-sri-lanka-asia-cup-2023-matheesha-pathirana-sets-up-big-win-for-sri-lanka-4346502/ Read More “Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka, Asia Cup 2023: Matheesha Pathirana Sets Up Big Win For Sri Lanka” »

Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka made resolute fifties after Matheesha Pathirana’s hostile bowling as Sri Lanka slayed Bangladesh by five wickets in their Asia Cup opener in Pallekele on Thursday. Pacer Pathirana’s 4 for 32 restricted Bangladesh to 164. The home side then rode on Samarawickrama’s 54 off 77 balls and Asalanka’s unbeaten 62 off 92 balls to overhaul the target in 39 overs. Samarawickrama is going through a career rejuvenation this year after fading from the scene.

He earned a recall to the Lanka Test side after five years against Ireland this July, and he also made a return to their ODI unit after a gap of four years during the home series against Afghanistan in June.

Samarawickrama made his Test return count with a hundred in the second match against Ireland. On Thursday, his fifty was the cornerstone of Lanka’s crucial win over Bangladesh.

But Lanka had to overcome a few uncomfortable moments before that.

Bangladesh bowlers had reduced Sri Lanka to 43 for three in 9.2 overs, dragging their side back into the match after their batsmen’s shoddy effort.

In Lankan cricketing circles, Samarawickrama has always been known as a stylish batsman.

Even on a slowing down pitch, the right-hander produced some sparkling shots using a wafer-thin bat and supple wrists.

His ability to find gaps around the field was visible when he drove pacer Shoriful Islam through covers with disdain for four, and later flicked left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan through mid-wicket for a boundary.

Samarawickrama had an equally composed partner in Asalanka as they produced 78 crucial runs for the fourth wicket.

The left-handed Asalanka, who has been in fine fettle this year in ODIs, was never hesitant to take the odd risks for a boundary, and it helped Samarawickrama to bat assuredly at the other end.

But off-spinner Mahedi Hasan snapped the partnership.

Hasan had Samarawickrama stumped by Mushfiqur Rahim with a tossed-up delivery that beat the batter.

Bangladesh did get a couple of quick wickets, but they just did not have enough runs on the board to defend.

For that, Sri Lanka should thank their bowlers who worked around a resilient fifty by Najmul Shanto, who made 89 off 122 balls with seven fours.

However, other batsmen did not pick up any hint from Shanto as Pathirana and spinner Maheesh Theekshana (2/19) combined to strike at regular intervals after Bangladesh opted to bat first.

The Pallekele International Cricket Stadium pitch had a bit of carry and bounce in it, and Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka brought Theekshana into attack in the second over itself.

Theekshana, the highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka in ODIs this year, fetched an immediate breakthrough as he trapped Tanzid Hasan plumb in front with a lovely delivery.

The ball pitched around the leg-stump and spun across to hit Hasan’s back pad and the Bangladesh opener had to walk back with a duck on his debut.

Pathirana soon jettisoned skipper Shakib Al Hasan. The left-hander could not negotiate the extra pace of Pathirana, and the ball nestled in the hands of stumper Kusal Mendis.

Bangladesh were 36 for three at this stage and they needed a couple of partnerships to steady things in the middle.

The fourth wicket alliance between Shanto and Towhid Hridoy (20) saw Bangladesh adding 59 runs in nearly 14 overs.

Shanto guided his young partner well as Bangladesh showed signs of recovery.

However, Lanka captain Shanaka ended the blooming alliance while winning a leg-before appeal against Hridoy.

Pathirana returned to end the stay of veteran Mushfiqur Rahim, whose attempted upper cut was snaffled by Chamika Karunaratne near third man.

With the cream of their batting returned to the pavilion, Shanto was Bangladesh’s remaining hope to reach a competitive total.

The left-hander, who is one of Bangladesh’s better ODI batsmen this year, batted with caution without sacrificing chances to find boundaries.

His on-drive off pacer Kasun Rajitha was a fine piece of timing and cover.

However, Theekshana ended Shanto’s tenure at the crease.

Both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will now travel to Pakistan to face Afghanistan in their respective group matches.
