Mathematically, five teams are fighting for two remaining spots in the IPL 2024 playoffs, with Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals already assured of the other two spots. Practically, though, the fight is between three teams – Chennai Super Kings, SunRisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are in with a good chance. Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants are too far away on Net run-rate. LSG were in with a good chance but their loss to Delhi Capitals on Tuesday means that advancing to the playoffs is almost improbable.

Former Indian cricket team star Mohammad Kaif was not happy with Rahul’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss in Delhi.

“Take the video analyst’s computer and throw it away. They didn’t go with any numbers. 200 has not been chased here at all. I am telling you this year’s numbers. In all four matches, the team batting first has won. You won the toss and said you would field first,” Mohammad Kaif said on Star Sports.

“The biggest mistake was the decision at the toss… So, there will be a question mark on the bowling as well. Lucknow had everything to gain from this match… I believe it was an absolute flop show from Lucknow.”

Another former Indian cricket team star Aakash Chopra was also not happy with the way Lucknow Super Giants went about their chase.

“When Lucknow came to bat, what batting are you doing? Quinton de Kock‘s bat is not striking the ball and KL Rahul got out for five. After that, (Marcus) Stoinis came and he was left stranded in the middle. Deepak Hooda got out for zero. What are you doing?” questioned Chopra while speaking on his YouTube channel.

KL Rahul has not been in the nest of form lately. He was also not selected for the Indian squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has lashed out at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain KL Rahul after the loss at the hands of Delhi Capitals (DC) in their IPL 2024 match on Tuesday. Kaif lambasted Rahul for opting to bowl on a batting first pitch, while also questioning the role of the video analysts. Abhishek Porel and Tristan Stubbs slammed half-centuries as DC posted 208/4 after being invited to bat first at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. In reply, LSG were restricted to 189/9, despite a half-century each from Nicholas Pooran and Arshad Khan.

While analysing the match, Kaif didn’t mince his words and criticised Rahul for opting to bowl on a pitch where teams batting second are yet to win a game this season.

“Take the video analyst’s computer and put it away. They didn’t go with any numbers. 200 has not been chased here at all. I am telling you this year’s numbers. In all four matches, the team batting first has won. You won the toss and said you would field first,” the former DC assistant coach said on Star Sports.

Kaif lavished praise on all-rounder Arshad Khan for salvaging some pride for LSG. Arshad hit 58 off just 33 balls to keep LSG in the hunt till the last over.

“If you leave aside Arshad Khan’s knock, it was a very bad defeat. Arshad saved your pride a little. I believe it was a horrible decision not to bat first here. KL Rahul disappointed a lot as a captain. You said you would play positive but you need to make positive decisions as well,” he added.

Kaif also pointed out how LSG squandered a golden opportunity to boost their playoffs hopes by making one mistake at the toss.

“You checked the pitch and felt that it had moisture. There was no moisture – 200 is scored here. The biggest mistake was the decision at the toss. After that, you allowed them to score 200 even after dismissing Jake Fraser-McGurk. So there will be a question mark on the bowling as well.

“Delhi will not gain anything from this. They got two points but their net run rate has not improved much. Lucknow had everything to gain from this match. They had to lose or gain. If they had won, they could have reached 16 points. I believe it was an absolute flop show from Lucknow,” Kaif went on to add.

LSG are all but out of the play-off race. They would first need to win their last match by a very big margin and then hope two of CSK, SRH and RCB lose their games by very big margins.

KL Rahul took a stunning catch to dismiss Shai Hope during the IPL 2024 match between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals on Tuesday. During the 9th over of the DC innings, Hope slammed a delivery from Ravi Bishnoi straight to Rahul at cover but the LSG captain was taken by surprise. He spilled the catch for a moment before pulling off a dive and complete it before the ball hit the ground. The catch left the commentators and fans stunned as the stadium erupted and LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka was pictured giving Rahul a standing ovation following the impressive catch.

Coming to the match, Ishant Sharma took three wickets after brilliant half-centuries from Tristan Stubbs and Abishek Porel as DC registered a crucial 19-run victory over LSG.

“I feel the wicket remained the same throughout the 40 overs. When we got JFM out in the first over we should have capitalized, but they – Hope and Porel – showed a lot of intent. We did well at the back end and 200 was a par total, we should have chased it down. This has been a problem right through the season – we keep losing a lot of wickets in the powerplay, we never get a solid start to get the likes of Stoinis and Pooran in, that is the big reason why we are in this position.” Rahul said after the match.

DC captain Rishabh Pant also opened up about his team’s chances of reaching the IPL playoffs.

“Definitely Pooran was giving us a hard time. We had certain plans. The total was good enough. We kept on bowling good balls. I would say the start of the season was with a lot of hopes. Some injuries. We are still in contention even after the last game. We had a better chance of qualifying if I would have had a chance to play in the last game. Personally, it was fantastic to come back. Was heartening to see the support from entire India. Was a long time to wait after one-and-a-half years. I want to be on the field all the time. Don’t want to miss any action,” he said at the post-match presentation.

For Lucknow Super Giants, their fate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 play-off race is no longer in their own hands. With a defeat to Delhi Capitals on Tuesday, the KL Rahul-led LSG are all but out of the IPL playoff race. Since, this past few days, LSG – particularly their owner Sanjiv Goenka – has been garnering negative publicity. It was due to an animated discussion with Rahul after LSG’s loss to SunRisers Hyderabad, which was caught on camera. It led to massive trolling.

The LSG have 12 points from 13 games and their run-rate is just pathetic. Their 10-wicket loss to SunRisers Hyderabad saw it fall to -0.769. After their loss to DC, it has fallen to -0.787.  The run rate that they possess is the worst among the four teams eyeing the fourth-place spot. They are all but out of the play-off race.

After their latest loss, Goenka was photographed again with Rahul. However, it was not animated at all. Throughout the match against DC, whenever KL Rahul did something spectacular or got our, the camera almost immediately focussed towards Goenka. HIs reaction throughout the match went viral. Before the match too, an image of the duo’s meeting for dinner went viral.

They would first need to win their last match by a very big margin. They would also hope two of CSK, SRH and RCB lose their games by very big margins.

Ultra-aggressive cricket, especially in the powerplay, has transformed the shortest format but it remains to be seen if the players can replicate it in the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Americas, said Lucknow Super Giants head coach Justin Langer. IPL teams have scored 200 or more 37 times this season so far but LSG managed to achieve the feat only once — against Chennai Super Kings last month — and Langer admitted that they had struggled in the powerplay.

“The Lucknow wicket has been a real contest between bat and ball whereas a lot in this tournament has been very one sided towards the bat. So that’s certainly, we haven’t capitalised in our powerplay like some of the other teams have,” Langer said after LSG lost by 19 runs to Delhi Capitals here on Tuesday night.

“…it’s been absolutely amazing watching some of these powerplays. It’s almost transformed the game. And whether people can continue to do this and whether they can do it during the World Cup, time will tell. But it’s certainly been ultra aggressive cricket.” Defending 209, DC had reduced LSG to 71 for 5 but pace all-rounder Arshad Khan gave a real scare when he slammed an unbeaten 33-ball 58 before the hosts held their nerves to limit the visitors to 189 for 9.

“I think Arshad is a very good cricketer. You saw that he swung the ball early. He’s a good fieldsman and to be able to bat like that, he’s a very good package,” Langer said.

“I’ve thought the whole way through watching this tournament that he’s got huge potential and he showed some of that tonight. So when he becomes more consistent, particularly with his bowling, he could be a real handful and a very, very good all-around cricketer.” For DC, Tristan Stubbs was sensational as he smashed a 25-ball 57 and then returned to take a wicket.

“I think Tristan Stubbs, that wicket was important obviously. We tried (Deepak) Hooda when the two left-handers were in and he got a wicket for us two games ago, he didn’t get one this game, whereas Stubbs did,” Langer said.

“So I thought if we had been a little more intelligent with our batting today, that was a chaseable score on this wicket. He’s (Stubbs) a very good cricketer. I’ve been seeing the power plays in the first six, but we’re also seeing the way some of these teams are finishing off, and I think Stubbs is an outstanding cricketer.” Talking about the focus on match-ups these days, Langer said: “There’s so much data these days, so when you do your analysis leading into every game and what often happens traditionally is left-handers don’t have as much impact on the game against off-spin when the ball’s spinning away.

“You saw Bishy (Ravi Bishnoi) bowled beautifully when they’re spinning away, whereas when the ball’s spinning back into the left-hander or the off-spin is spinning back into the right-hander, it tends to be more in the arc to be hitting some of these sixes.

“So generally the thinking is that the ball that’s turning away from the batsman, left or right, is the way that most teams tend to match it up. Often when a wicket quickly falls, you look to get an off spinner on … and the truth is, there’s not too many Ravi Ashwins or Nathan Lyons in the world. So it’s a specialist role, that’s why often part-timers are used.”

All Indian bowlers are doing good job: Amre

DC are missing some key players but they ended things on a high and assistant coach Pravin Amre credited the back-up players and Indian bowlers for producing the goods.

“It’s a new team, I look personally at many positives. As a find, Jake, Stubbs, Porel are good finds for us and even Rasik. I think last four games, he really contributed well and as an Indian, bowling in a death, I think that’s a specialist job. He backed himself very well,” he said.

“So I think last four or five games, all Indian bowlers are doing good job. I think that was very important for us, like the way Khaleel bowled, Mukesh bowled, Ishant bowled, I think that was very positive for us as a franchise.

“In IPL, you have to expect the unexpected. Harry Brooks was not there, then (Mitchell) Marsh had to go, also (David) Warner got injured. So auction table team was not playing but the back-up players came and delivered. To finish at number five, I think that’s a special achievement.” PTI ATK SSC SSC

Lucknow Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka invited skipper KL Rahul to his house following the massive controversy over their fiery conversation after the loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024. According to LSG insiders, Rahul attended the dinner at Goenka’s house on Monday. Earlier, Goenka was caught on camera having an animated conversation with Rahul and head coach Justin Langer after the heavy defeat. The incident led to massive criticism from both experts and fans with Goenka facing outrage for publicly berating the cricketer. However, it seems like there is no rift in the LSG camp as a picture of KL Rahul hugging Sanjiv Goenka has gone viral on social media.

Lucknow Super Giants are still in the IPL 2024 playoffs race as they can book their spot in the Top 4 with victories in the two remaining matches. They take on Delhi Capitals on Tuesday.

LSG will have to win both of their remaining matches and that will take them to 16 points.

If Chennai Super Kings beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad win one out of their remaining two matches, all 3 sides can end up with 16 points and LSG may not qualify due to their inferior Net Run Rate (NRR).

If SRH win both of their matches and CSK lose to RCB, LSG will go through at No. 4.

If SRH lose both of their matches, LSG can go through by winning their remaining matches irrespective of what happens in the clash between CSK and RCB.

LSG assistant coach Lance Klusener earlier opened up about the entire controversy.

“I don’t see any problem with some robust discussion between two cricket lovers. So for us, I guess it’s just a storm in a teacup. We love a robust discussion. I think that’s how teams get better. So, it’s not a big thing for us,” the South African said during the pre-match press conference.

Lucknow Super Giants found themselves in a unique firefighting mode after the infamous on-field episode between skipper KL Rahul and co-owner Sanjeev Goenka. The animated chatter between the two after the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad became a big talking point on social media, giving birth to many theories. Even LSG assistant coach Lance Klusener had to explain the conversation between skipper Rahul and franchise owner Goenka in the pre-match press conference ahead of the Delhi Capitals contest. While Klusener labelled it a “robust discussion” between “two cricket lovers”, Rahul’s wife Athiya Shetty’s post has triggered a new ‘storm’.

In a cryptic post, Athiya wrote: “The calm after the storm’.

After enduring a staggering 10-wicket defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad last week, a video from the animated discussion between Rahul and Goenka took over social media.

After the conversation between the two became public, reports surfaced about Rahul leaving the franchise next season. Klusener ruled out a possible dispute between the two and claimed that it is not a “big thing” for LSG.

“I see no problem in a robust discussion between two cricket lovers. For us, it is a storm in a teacup. It’s not a big thing for us,” LSG assistant coach Klusener said in the pre-match press conference on Monday ahead of their clash against DC on Tuesday.

This season, Rahul struggled to muster up runs at a quick pace under his belt in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. The experienced wicketkeeper batter has 460 runs to his name in 12 matches at an average of 38.33 and a strike rate of 136.09.

Despite his struggles to play those quick-fire knocks in the opening phase of the game, Klusener feels that according to him Rahul has proved that he is a quality player and hasn’t played badly this season.

“It is a long competition, it has been documented that very few batters have gone through 15 or 16 games playing better at some stages than others KL has proved that he is quality and I don’t think he has played bad at all at the moment. I think we have so much high expectations from him and I think he is a game away from blowing open for us,” Klusener added.

Lucknow Super Giants assistant coach Lance Klusener on Monday played down team owner Sanjiv Goenka’s public outburst on their skipper KL Rahul, terming it “storm in a tea cup” and said he didn’t find any issue in a “robust discussion between two cricket lovers”. Social media has been abuzz after Goenka was seen having an animated chat, purportedly reprimanding Rahul after LSG’s record demolition at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad, last Wednesday. There have been speculations about Rahul’s future as LSG skipper also, but Klusener said there has been “certainly no discussions around” the matter. “I don’t see any problem with some robust discussion between two cricket lovers. So for us, I guess it’s just a storm in a teacup. We love a robust discussion. I think that’s how teams get better. So, it’s not a big thing for us,” the South African said during the pre-match press conference.

“This IPL has been tough for Rahul”

Opening the batting, Rahul has scored 460 runs but his strike-rate reads 136.09, and it has put pressure on the LSG middle-order comprising Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran.

Klusener, however, backed the senior batter.

“KL has got his own unique style which has made him a fantastic player and respected around the world. I think this IPL has been exceptionally tough for him because we’ve kept losing wickets at stages which hasn’t allowed him to kick on where he likes. He probably feels like he’s always having to rebuild.

“I think as a batting unit around KL, we haven’t been as good as we should. It’s just been extremely tough conditions for him. That’s something we’ve chatted about as well — we’ve just kept losing wickets at tough times.” However, Klusener said a big knock from Rahul was just around the corner.

“Then batters coming in, seem to have to be rebuilding the whole time and not just coming into a platform. So, I think by KL’s standards, he probably would have liked to have kicked on in a few more games.

“Probably (he) would have liked to have at least one or two hundreds that haven’t worked out for him. But there’s still a couple of games left. He’s in a good space. So, we’ve got our fingers crossed again for him,” he said.

LSG bowling unit was at the receiving end of a brutal onslaught from SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, who racked up a record 167 in 9.4 overs.

“By the bowling unit’s high standards, they didn’t execute as well as they would have liked to on that surface and then you mix in two players who played absolutely beautifully and quite often that ends in a poor result for the team that doesn’t bring their best skills,” Klusener said.

“It was just a mix of some exceptionally hard batting and I don’t think we executed our skills as well as we should have and you mix that together, it doesn’t normally end well.” LSG are currently at the seventh spot with 12 points, making the remaining two games a must-win contest to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

“I think we’ve been just a little bit inconsistent by our own high standards. We just need to deal with the fact of where we are now and make sure that we become consistent.

“As a team, we want to win the IPL, we probably need to win five in a row, which I think RCB has just done five in a row.

“So that’s just proved that for us it’s absolutely possible, but that’s just the big picture. We need to get over the line tomorrow before we can have any other aspirations.”
