Hawk-Eye founder Paul Hawkins has slammed Michael Vaughan for the former England player’s remark on the technology following Joe Root‘s controversial dismissal in Ranchi Test against India. During the guests’ second innings, a Ravichandran Ashwin delivery crashed into Root’s pad but the umpire was not convinced about the LBW shout. India went for a review. Although it seemed like the majority of the ball was pitched outside the leg-stump, the technology deemed it fair and gave it out. Some experts and fans were not happy with the decision with Vaughan asking for more transparency in the system so that the viewers also get to see what happens during the tracking process to put “the noise to bed”.

Hawkins, in a recent interaction, revealed how the Hawk-Eye technology actually works during a Decision Review System (DRS) and the measures that are taken to maintain transparency and minimize errors.

“For every day, the guys will go out and measure the width of the stumps. And so that gets entered into the system. So you’re working off of the actual width of those stumps… So you calibrate the system for the environment that it’s there,” said the technology founder on The Analyst podcast.

“A good process that’s evolved in terms of quality control is that there is a van camera, which is more an internal process, making sure people aren’t on their phones. But the best thing in terms of quality control is an automatic screengrab of the tracking system is taken and that automatically goes to the ICC. So whilst it will never go to broadcast because there’s lots of intellectual property within those screengrabs for the internal quality control for the people that need to make sure that the technology providers are providing accurate answers, that’s all done,” he added.

Hawkins, particularly, also reacted to Vaughan’s suggestion and criticised the ex-player’s “unfortunate” view.

“The commentary, I think, is a little bit uneducated. It is unfortunate from Vaughan, because, obviously he was a fantastic player, really enjoyed watching him play, and a great commentator, very entertaining. But I think it’s a responsibility to the game, in terms of journalism. Perhaps a little bit more preparation in terms of his role as a journalist may help him explain what’s happening to the huge fan base of cricket so that what he writes is factually correct. In the same way as Hawk-Eye has an obligation to be factually correct, perhaps journalists do too,” said Hawkins.

Joe Root did not bring out the sweep shot until he faced his 115th ball on a clement Friday at Ranchi and unleashed only a solitary reverse sweep while constructing a slow-burning hundred to save the day for England. Root’s unbeaten 106 off 226 balls, which was made at a strike rate of 46.90, was, perhaps, the most anti-Bazball innings that might have been played in the Brendon McCullum era. But then Root needed to rediscover that dogged Yorkie inside him – for himself and the team.

He entered the fourth Test against India on the back of 29, 2, 5, 16, 18, 7 in his last Test innings and that 18 in the first innings at Rajkot might have hurt him deeply.

England were at a dominant 224 for two, well in sight of India’s first innings total of 445. But Root decided to reverse lap Jasprit Bumrah for Yashasvi Jaiswal to pull off a smart catch at slip.

His dismissal sparked an England collapse as the tourists were bundled out for 319, and India converted that lead into a record victory and a 2-1 series lead.

It sparked the discussion about the careless side of Bazball, and Root’s 50-plus average during the McCullum reign was not good enough to slow down the wagging fingers at him.

The 33-year-old needed an innings of substance for that, and he had to return to his original batting ways. Ian Chappell, a cricketing master-brain, offered a similar thought.

“Root had a bloody fine record playing normally, and he was a quick scorer playing normally. I don’t see why he’s trying to change things drastically, and I’ve never believed you should play premeditated shots,” Chappell told World Wide Sports.

Root did precisely that, curbing his desire for fancy. However, it is not that the former England captain cannot pull off the extraordinary.

A quick look at a You Tube clip of Root reverse scooping Pat Cummins during the Ashes last year will offer validation for his skill level.

But that was at Edgbaston and the pitch there had a lot more carry than the ones in the sub-continent, and playing those shots might have been a tad easier for him.

So, Root had to be cautious and judicious here. But it was not all catnip for Root as he had to ward off a few uncomfortable moments during his innings.

In the very first ball he faced, debutant pacer Akash Deep brought one back into Root to ping his pads but in DRS, taken by Rohit Sharma, it was evident that the ball was missing the leg-stump.

Later, Mohammed Siraj too hit his pads with an in-swinger as Root almost paid for his delayed front foot movement but for a feather of an inside edge. He was 82 then.

When Root was on 97, Akash Deep’s reverse swinging in-dipper came in and slammed into his pads, but umpire Rod Tucker deemed that the ball was doing too much.

But, as any other great batter, he showed braveness to move on from those momentary discomforts to build an old-fashioned Test innings.

He struck just nine boundaries, including a flowing drive through covers off Akash Deep to reach his 31st Test hundred, but lack of big hits never bothered him.

Root was content in taking those singles and twos to put his and the team’s score on an upwardly mobile curve.

His approach was more sanguine than flashy, but received its appreciation from the high priests Ben Stokes and McCullum when they signalled thumbs up from the dressing room to celebrate his century.

The more cynical among us would point to the absence of the rested Bumrah for Root’s success.

But Test cricket is all about a match-up between possibilities, and none knows that better than Root.

Batter Zak Crawley hailed Joe Root and called him England’s best player following his record-breaking ton on Day 1 of the fourth Test against India in Ranchi. Root with his unbeaten 106* brought England back into the game after debutant pacer Akash Deep provided India with a dream start. His knock was a mix of patience and composure as he picked his moments to find the fence and kept the scoreboard ticking. He completed his 31st Test ton and showed a gesture towards the dugout with skipper Ben Stokes showcasing the same gesture towards the 33-year-old.

“We’re chuffed for him, to be honest. We never doubted Joe, we just think if he gets couple of lowies, he’s even more due than before, so we fully expected him to go out and get runs in this game. He deserves everything he gets, he works so hard at his game and he always comes good,” Crawley said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

When the conditions were tricky, Root held on to his nerves and along with Ben Foakes he ensured that England went wicketless in the second session for the first time in the series.

Both batters stitched up a 114-run partnership and drove England towards a competitive score after they were reduced to 112/5.

“He’s probably the only bloke in our team who could have done that knock; he’s that good, he’s our best player and he’s stepped up when we needed him to. We needed him to get a score, and he got a score like he’s done for so many years now. He’s just a phenomenal player, one of the best – if not the best – player we’ve ever had for England,” Crawley added.

Coming to the day’s action, at stumps, England posted a score of 302/7 with Root and Ollie Robinson unbeaten with scores of 106(226) and 31(60) respectively.

Root and Robinson stitched up an unbeaten 57-run stand which allowed England to amass runs at a healthy run rate. Their unbeaten partnership ensured England went past the 300-run mark and finished the day on a dominant note.

Experienced batter Joe Root became England’s most successful batter after he became the first batter from his nation to go past the 19,000-run mark following his unbeaten ton against India on Day 1 of the fourth Test. Root tapped into his prime form to pull England back into the game after debutant pacer Akash Deep provided India with a dream start. Along with Ben Foakes, he stitched up a 114-run partnership and ensured that England went wicketless in the second session for the first time in the series. With an exquisite drive, he found the boundary line to raise his bat for his 31st Test ton.

With his knock of 106*, Root has now amassed 19,014 runs and became the first England batter to do so. His closest competitor is former England skipper Alastair Cook who struck 15,737 runs during his decorated career.

Root’s knock was a perfect blend of patience and aggression as he picked his moments to find the boundary line which kept the scoreboard ticking.

With his game-changing knock, Root brought up his 10th Test ton against India in 52nd innings which is the most by any batter in the format.

Australia’s veteran batter Steve Smith has nine tons against India in red ball cricket. Cricket legends Gary Sobers, Viv Richards and Ricky Ponting have eight tons each to their name against India.

Coming to the day’s action, at stumps, England posted a score of 302/7 with Root and Ollie Robinson unbeaten with scores of 106(226) and 31(60) respectively.

Root’s composure was on full display while making his first appearance of the tour, Robinson caught the eye of the spectators with a six and a four during the final overs of the day’s play.

Root and Robinson stitched up an unbeaten 57-run stand which allowed England to amass runs at a healthy run rate. Their unbeaten partnership ensured England went past the 300-run mark and finished the day on a dominant note.

Joe Root Added To England Squad For First ODI Against Ireland At His Own Request https://artifex.news/joe-root-added-to-england-squad-for-first-odi-against-ireland-at-his-own-request-4400827/ Mon, 18 Sep 2023 14:48:55 +0000 https://artifex.news/joe-root-added-to-england-squad-for-first-odi-against-ireland-at-his-own-request-4400827/ Read More “Joe Root Added To England Squad For First ODI Against Ireland At His Own Request” »

Former England Test skipper Joe Root has been added to England’s first ODI squad against Ireland at Headingley at his own request. England’s initial squad didn’t include a single player from their provisional ODI World Cup squad for the three-match ODI series. Harry Brook was the only exception, he was a part of the ODI series but after being included in the squad in place of Jason Roy, he will rest for the entire series. Root will be looking to gain some momentum before the ODI World Cup commences on October 5. He has struggled for form during England’s recently concluded 3-1 series win over New Zealand, making 6, 0 and 4 in the first three games before a rusty knock of 29(40) in the fourth ODI at Lord’s. His knock further exposed his lack of rhythm and consistency in the 50-over format.

Overall since England’s triumph in the 2019 World Cup, he has only batted 16 times in ODI format.

England’s national selector Luke Wright, revealed Root’s “asked to be involved” in Wednesday’s first ODI.

“Like for a lot of people, he is getting that rhythm of 50-over cricket. Obviously, we don’t play [much of] it in this country, but a lot of those lads haven’t played a lot of 50-over cricket, especially someone like Joe,” Wright said as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

“He just wanted a bit more time. It’s a great thing for someone to still have that desire to keep wanting to do more and more. It shows where he’s at with his game and what makes him such a world-class player that, when he doesn’t feel quite right, he still wants to tinker and do more. As much as we probably thought he needed a break as well, he just wanted another go,” Wright added.

Wright went on to indicate that Roy who is suffering from back spasms could feature in the second as well as the third ODI against Ireland.

“We’ve given Jason the option of being involved and he still has the option,” Wright said. “He wasn’t expected to be in that Ireland squad and then to get the news that he was missing out on the World Cup came as a bit of a hammer blow, so we’ve left that with Jason…. We’ll work on that one over the next few days.”

England will play the first ODI against Ireland on Wednesday at Headingley.

England squad vs Ireland: Zak Crawley (c), Ben Duckett (vc), Rehan Ahmed, Joe Root (first ODI only), Brydon Carse, Sam Hain, Will Jacks, Craig Overton, Matthew Potts, Phil Salt, George Scrimshaw, Jamie Smith, Luke Wood.
