The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the franchise owners in the Pakistan Super League are facing a catch-22 situation over signing on some of the high profile overseas players who went unsold in the Indian Premier League auction recently. PSL 10, to be held between April 8 to May 19, is clashing with the IPL this time and teams are keen to sign players such as David Warner and Steve Smith, who did not find takers in IPL auction.

A team source told PTI while the six franchise owners were keen to rope in some of the high profile players available after the IPL auction, the salary ceiling of USD 200,000 for players in the PSL players draft had made the situation difficult.

Big names like David Warner, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, Jonny Bairstow. Adil Rashid etc would be free of international commitments as the window from April to May is reserved for the IPL.

“But the problem is that the players draft scheduled on January 11 time is running out to find a formula to sign on high profile players and also ensure a sense of disparity doesn’t develop among players in the PSL,” said a source.

He explained that the PCB and franchise owners were aware that it was unlikely most of the high profile players unsold in the IPL would sign for under USD 200,000.

“The PSL’s new CEO, Salman Naseer has even suggested that the franchise owners directly talk to the players’ agents so that the PCB is not involved in negotiations.” The source said some of the franchise owners were reluctant to pay players anything above the salary cap for the PSL and also fear that even if a franchise signs on a high profile player directly at a higher salary it could lead to dissatisfaction among other players specially the local ones in the league.

Another franchise source said that some of the agents of those players unsold in the IPL had already made contact with some franchises inquiring about potential deals.

“Some franchises are also opposing bypassing the draft and insist that all major players should be part of it.

The IPL 2025 auction saw the 10 franchises spend a massive Rs 639.15 crore to sign 182 players the included 62 overseas stars. From Rishabh Pant commanding a record-breaking price of Rs 27 crore to 13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi becoming the youngest player to be signed for the tournament, there was no shortage of brilliant stories in the auction. However, there were some big names that failed to get any buyers and for some of them, it can be the end of the road as far as IPL is concerned. Here’s a look at 5 major superstars who went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction –

David Warner

Warner has been a mainstay of the IPL for many years and his crowing achievement was captaining the Sunrisers Hyderabad side to the title in 2016. The Australia batter is currently among the top run-scorers in the competition’s history and he even won the Orange Cap in 2015, 2017 and 2019. However, following a disappointing run with Delhi Capitals in 2024, he was not picked up in this year’s auction.

Mayank Agarwal

Mayank is widely considered to be a premier batter in domestic cricket and since 2011, he has been a part of multiple IPL sides. From starting his career with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2011 to captaining Punjab Kings, the batter has been an integral part of the tournament. In IPL 2025 auction, he was not picked by any side and considering his dwindling form in the shortest format of the sport, it can be the end of a long partnership between him and IPL.

Kane Williamson

A part of the modern ‘Big 4’ – Kane Williamson – won the Orange Cap in 2018 and even captained Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, it has been a topsy turvy ride for the New Zealand international in the IPL and with his game more suited to Test cricket, it looks like the end of the road for him.

Piyush Chawla

Piyush is unarguably one of the greatest spinners in the history of the IPL. The 35-year-old has taken 192 wickets in the competition and over the last two years, he was the lead spinner for Mumbai Indians. But, with no teams going for him in this year’s auction, it can be the end of the road for the veteran cricketer.

Jonny Bairstow

It came as a slight surprise that the destructive England opener was not chosen by any franchise in the IPL 2025 auction. Bairstow has played over 50 matches in the last five years for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings. However, a dip in performance in the past two seasons saw him missing out this year.

Skipper Jos Buttler has been ruled out of England’s T20I series against Australia due to a setback in recovering from a right calf injury. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said it places his participation in the ODI series against Australia, happening later this month in doubt. ECB further announced that Phil Salt will be assuming England captaincy duties for the T20I series in Buttler’s absence while all-rounder Jamie Overton has been drafted into the squad. Salt had captained the Manchester Originals in The Hundred this season after Buttler was ruled out due to a calf injury while preparing for the competition.

Jordan Cox, who is currently with the Test squad for the last match against Sri Lanka starting at The Oval on Friday, has been added to the ODI squad as cover. The three-match T20I series between England and Australia is set to begin next week at Rose Bowl, Southampton on September 11.

The subsequent five-match ODI series between the two teams is scheduled to start on September 19 at Trent Bridge, in what is seen as the start of a new era for England after failing to defend their ODI and T20 World Cup titles.

After the sacking of Matthew Mott, England will be coached by Marcus Trescothick in an interim capacity for the Australia series before handing over the charge to Brendon McCullum at the start of 2025.

England T20I squad: Phil Salt (captain), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Dan Mousley, Adil Rashid, Jamie Overton, Reece Topley, and John Turner

England ODI squad: Jos Buttler (captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Reece Topley, John Turner, and Jordan Cox

England have launched a new white-ball era after dropping Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali from their forthcoming clashes against Australia. Bairstow and Ali have over 400 international appearances between them but the veteran pair have been deemed expendable as England revamp their limited overs line-up following disappointing ODI and T20 World Cup campaigns. Matthew Mott was sacked as England’s limited over head coach last month and the changes continued with Monday’s squad announcement.

Five uncapped players have been called up for Marcus Trescothick‘s first assignment as interim coach.

Left-arm seamer Josh Hull, all-rounder Jacob Bethell and pace bowler John Turner were selected in both formats, while Dan Mousley and Jordan Cox come into the T20 group. Moeen had been an influential vice-captain to Jos Buttler but is now 37 and has acknowledged his international career was winding down.

His role as a spin bowling all-rounder will be covered by his Warwickshire team-mates Bethell and Mousley. Bairstow turns 35 next month but there is no such sense that he is ready to bring the curtain down on his England days.

He was an integral part of the white-ball revolution that carried the side to 50-over World Cup glory in 2019, scoring centuries against India and New Zealand in must-win games at that tournament.

Despite having around 14 months left on the two-year central contract he signed last October, Bairstow lost his Test spot earlier this year after winning his 100th cap over the winter.

Chris Jordan has also been axed, while Liam Livingstone has retained his T20 spot but misses out on the 50-over matches.

Durham seamer Brydon Carse was selected after completing a three-month ban for historical betting offences on Wednesday. He has not played competitively since May 10 due to his suspension but has been offered an instant return by England’s selectors.

Jofra Archer, whose only cricket since the T20 World Cup has been in the Hundred, retains his place in both squads.

The three-match T20 series against Australia starts at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton the day after England’s third and final Test concludes against Sri Lanka. Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith and Matthew Potts will take a short break before joining up with Trescothick’s ODI team for the five-match series.

Joe Root is not included in what is believed to be a case of workload management ahead of a busy winter. Zak Crawley, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood are all out injured but fast bowler Saqib Mahmood returns after recovering from his own fitness issues.

England T20 squad to face Australia: Jos Butter (capt), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Dan Mousley, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Reece Topley, John Turner.

England ODI squad to face Australia: Jos Buttler (capt), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Reece Topley, John Turner.

England batter and former skipper Joe Root shared his surprising take on the incident that saw Jonny Bairstow dismissed uniquely in the Ashes series 2023 against Australia. Root highlighted the need for players to be more aware while acknowledging the legality of the dismissal. It was the second Test of the Ashes series as England were in the midst of a challenging run-chase of 371 runs. Jonny Bairstow, known for his resilience at the crease, was on 10 runs when the moment of controversy unfolded. After ducking a ball, Bairstow casually stepped outside his crease, assuming the ball was dead. However, Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey seized the opportunity, swiftly stumping Bairstow before he could return to safety.

The dismissal, which came on the fourth day of the game, was pivotal. England, needing 371 runs, was skittled for 327, resulting in a 2-0 series lead for Australia. The manner of Bairstow’s dismissal sparked an uproar.

Members of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) voiced their displeasure at the Australian team as they returned to the Long Room for lunch, and debates raged about the ‘Spirit of Cricket’. Many argued that Bairstow should have been warned, while others maintained that the dismissal, though controversial, was within the laws of the game.

In the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Board’s documentary, ‘The Ashes 2023 Our Take’, Joe Root reflects on the incident with candor. “Initially I was quite angry, but I think when you are involved in the game it is very difficult to put yourself in the other position. So I would like to say I would have dealt with it differently (than Australia), but I could very easily have done the same thing,” Root admitted.

Root’s perspective is one of understanding and realism. “Jonny will hate me saying this, but if you stay in your crease you can’t get given out can you? At the end of the day it is within the laws of the game. You should be aware as a player,” he added.

Root lauded the leadership of skipper Ben Stokes, who rallied the team in the face of adversity. Stokes’ resilience and strategic acumen led England to a 2-2 draw in the series, a remarkable comeback after the contentious dismissal at Lord’s. The team won the third and fifth Tests comprehensively, and the fourth Test at Manchester was only interrupted by rain, preventing what could have been an England victory.

Root’s reflections extend to the broader impact of the incident on the team’s spirit. “It deserved more than for us to come out on the wrong end of that (Lord’s) result. For England’s captain to show us this is how we play our cricket regardless of the situation, regardless of what people might have said in the first innings, how we got dismissed, reckless, careless, no thought behind it. It was a really powerful moment for us as a team and the rest of the series as well,” he concluded.

In the end, while Australia retained the prestigious Ashes urn by drawing the series, they failed to win a series in England for the first time since 2001.

USA vs England LIVE Updates, T20 World Cup 2024: A win for England over USA in their final Super 8 game of the 2024 T20 World Cup may not be enough to send them through to the semi-finals. Currently with a lower net run rate than both South Africa and West Indies, a narrow win for the hosts could see England crash out. However, facing a USA side that has lost its momentum, England will fancy their chances to pull off a dominant victory. USA’s purple patch is well and truly over, after three consecutive losses. With semi-final hopes dashed, USA will be aiming to pull off one more upset in the 2024 T20 World Cup. (Live Scorecard | Points Table)

England opener Phil Salt said the convincing eight-wicket victory over the West Indies in their Super Eight clash has given his side “confidence and momentum” at the right time in the T20 World Cup after a chaotic run in the event’s group stage. Salt played a major hand in the win here, racing his way to an unbeaten 87 off 47 balls as the defending champions replied to the home team’s 180/4 with 181/2 in 17.3 overs.

“It’s been a very stop-start (tournament) for us. We had a hiccup against Australia and then, the rain out against Scotland. It didn’t really feel like we played much cricket up to this point,” Salt said in the post-match press meet.

“I feel in tournament cricket, you need a bit of confidence and momentum at the right time and you need to keep building on it. So, to get a win against the hosts gives us the first push in that direction,” he added.

The stats would show that Salt made his runs at a strike-rate in excess of 185, but the right-hander had to knuckle down a bit after the quick dismissals of Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali before opening up again.

Salt said he was eyeing the right moment to attack the West Indies bowlers.

“It was more about me batting through, once Jos got out, I was always going to sort of play the anchor role, especially when we sent Moeen as the lefty.

“I think it was about me just batting through that period and waiting for my time to strike,” he noted.

The 27-year-old Welshman switched to top gear in the 16th over bowled by Romario Shepherd, smashing 30 runs off the pacer to seal the chase.

“Obviously, Shepherd coming back from that end was my time to pull the trigger. In the back of my head I did, (visualise it) but I didn’t vocalise it to Jonny (Bairstow, his batting partner). I didn’t want him to say no.

“I feel like they’ve got such good spinners and they’ve bowled really well through the middle, so, I felt like the first sniff I got, I had to take that chance,” he added.

Salt also lauded pacer Jofra Archer and leg-spinner Adil Rashid for restricting the West Indies to a sub-200 total.

“I think we bowled really well coming here for the first time. I think we would have definitely taken 180. We had some really good plans and we kept a few of their main guys quiet.

“So, I think from Jofra and Rash (Rashid) that’s a really experienced, skilled bit of reading the game and then the execution,” said Salt.

Phil Salt slammed a belligerent unbeaten 87 as defending champions England began their T20 World Cup Super Eights campaign with a crushing eight-wicket win over the West Indies in St Lucia. Coming off a scorching display against Afghanistan, West Indies amassed a competitive 180 for four, but England waltzed to 181 for two in 17.3 overs in their Group 2 match. Salt led their charge with a bruising innings that came off 47 balls with seven fours and five sixes. The opener received copious help from Jonny Bairstow (48*).

But equal amount of credit should be given to the English bowlers too for producing as many as 51 dot balls with Jofra Archer (1/34) and Adil Rashid (1/21) accounting for 22 of them in their tidy spells.

Salt made full use of his reprieve by Nicholas Pooran on seven to cart the Windies bowlers around in the company of Bairstow as the Englishmen together milked 97 runs from 44 balls for the third wicket, while negotiating the hosts’ spin attack in the middle overs.

After a sedate start, England broke loose in the second over when skipper Jos Buttler struck two boundaries off Romario Sheperd to take 12 runs. Salt then came to his own, hammering an Andre Russell slower one for a six.

The duo continued their assault and Salt finished the power play smashing Alzarri Joseph for a four and a six to lift England to 58 for no loss in six overs, the best powerplay score by any team against the Caribbeans in this tournament.

Off-spinner Roston Chase finally gave the breakthrough when he noticed Buttler stepping forward and speared in a 108.9 kph delivery to catch the England skipper off guard.

The ball hit him hard and low on the front pad to be trapped leg before but it was a minor aberration as England pressed forward with determination towards a win.

Earlier, Windies got off to a splendid start as Brandon King and Johnson Charles opened with authority. The pair had the Windies flying at 40 for no loss in the fifth over, before they were hit with a cruel blow.

Attempting to drive Sam Curran down the ground, King (23; 13b) picked up what appeared to be a side strain and had to retire hurt.

The in-form Pooran joined Charles at the crease, lifting them to 54 in the power-play Pooran smoked Mark Wood for a leg-side six to start the eighth over, but England managed to tighten the screws after the drinks.

That was the final boundary before the mid-innings break.

Charles then ended a brief lull by smashing Rashid for a six.

But in the next over, England struck with Moeen Ali dismissing Charles (38; 34b), who holed out to Harry Brook at long-on.

Captain Rovman Powell took on off-spinner Ali with a maximum and went on to smash Liam Livingstone for three sixes in five balls in a 20-run over.

But Livingstone had the last laugh, picking up the crucial wicket of Powell (36 off 17) off his last delivery.

The English found some fight in the final five overs.

Archer found the edge of Pooran’s bat, as the heavy hitter removed for 36 off 32. Rutherford then dominated the strike in the last few overs to lift their total but that was not enough for them.
