Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, recently shared a harrowing experience during an interview with Joe Rogan, revealing that he was once at risk of being sentenced to death in Pakistan due to content posted on Facebook. This startling admission came amid ongoing legal battles between Meta and the Pakistani government, which has accused the platform of allowing content that violates the country’s strict blasphemy laws.

Zuckerberg’s comments shed light on the complex and often fraught relationship between global tech platforms and local governments. In this case, a specific incident involving a user-posted image, which had a drawing of Prophet Mohammed, sparked a lawsuit against Zuckerberg, with the Pakistani government seeking to hold him personally responsible for the alleged blasphemy. Although Zuckerberg expressed little concern for his own safety, acknowledging that he had no intention of visiting Pakistan, the experience highlighted the broader challenges faced by Meta and other global platforms as they navigate the intersection of free speech and local regulations.

As Zuckerberg explained, “There are places around the world that just have different values that go against our free expression values and want us to crack down and ban way more stuff than I think a lot of people would believe would be the right thing to do.” This sentiment reflects the tension between Meta’s commitment to free expression and the varying cultural norms and laws that govern online content around the world.

The issue is particularly pronounced in Pakistan, where blasphemy laws can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment or even death. The legal system in Pakistan has historically been used to target individuals and organisations accused of violating these laws. In this context, Zuckerberg’s comments underscore the need for a nuanced approach to content regulation, one that balances respect for local cultural norms with the principles of free expression.

Moreover, Zuckerberg’s remarks highlight the role of government influence in shaping the online landscape. He argued that foreign governments exerting pressure on American tech companies requires stronger support from the US government. As he noted, the “power of saying they’re going to throw you in prison” is a level of pressure that necessitates protection for tech companies.

Meta’s experience in Pakistan is not an isolated incident. Meta has had its own share of legal challenges regarding its content that some governments deem harmful, offensive, or illegal.

Months before the ongoing wildfires ravaged through Southern California, American podcaster Joe Rogan had made ominous predictions about the same. In a July 2024 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan discussed the wildfire threat with comedian Sam Morril. On the podcast, he recalled his conversation with a firefighter who predicted a catastrophic scenario for the region.

“One day, it’s going to be the right wind and fire is going to start in the right place and it’s going to burn through LA all the way to the ocean,” Rogan recounted the firefighter telling him.

In the clip, Rogan, wearing a Los Angeles Fire Department T-shirt, described how the firefighter highlighted the terrifying scale and speed at which a wildfire could spread. “These fires are so big, you’re talking about thousands of acres burning simultaneously with 40 mph (64 kmph) winds. Once it happens, it’s so spread out that there’s nothing they can do,” Rogan said.

According to The New York Post, Joe Rogan has frequently echoed his concerns about Los Angeles’ vulnerability to wildfires during various episodes of his podcast.

In 2018, while Rogan was still residing in Bell Canyon, Ventura County, he hosted English mentalist Derren Brown on The Joe Rogan Experience. Wildfires were already raging in the area, and Brown mentioned at the start of the interview that he was lucky to have made it despite the ongoing fires. Rogan responded by recounting the same warning from the firefighter, describing how the “right wind” could drive a fire from the city all the way to the ocean.

A year later, in 2019, Rogan brought up the topic again while speaking with journalist David Wallace-Wells. During their discussion on climate change, they touched on predictions that California’s wildfires could become “64 times worse by the end of the century.”

Rogan’s warning resurfaced as wildfires, especially the Palisades Fire in the west and the Eaton Fire in the east, continued to rage, forcing mass evacuations and destroying homes across Los Angeles County.

As reported by CNN, the wildfires have claimed the lives of at least 10 people. But authorities caution that the true extent of casualties may not be known until investigators safely enter the affected neighbourhoods. The fires have forced tens of thousands to flee their homes, with evacuation orders continuing to impact large parts of the region.

Popular podcast show Joe Rogan has seemingly mocked ABC show, The View’s co-host, Joy Behar, after she claimed that the former believed in ‘dragons’. Ms Behar, featuring alongside Whoppie Goldberg, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin made the remark when the panel was discussing a poll, showing the number of young American voters who received their daily news from right-leaning political influencers and podcasters. Mr Rogan’s endorsement of Donald Trump is believed to have inspired a swathe of young American voters to cast their ballot for the Republican leader in the just-concluded presidential election.

“I think that’s why people like our show, because they know that we are checked by ABC News…We went from Walter Cronkite, basically, to this guy Joe Rogan, who believes in dragons. I checked it,” said Ms Behar.

“And he also thinks that they, dragons-like, I guess, dinosaur-type of animals, roamed the Earth when people did. So this is a type of really, really bad information that’s going out there. But it’s possible Donald Trump did roam the Earth when dinosaurs were here,” she added.

As the video of Ms Behar’s monologue went viral, Mr Rogan quote posted it and said: “That’s my new official X description.”

At the time this article went live, Mr Rogan’s bio/description on the X platform read: “Dragon Believer.”

Rogan goes on a spree

Mr Rogan fired another shot at the hosts of the ABC show when he shared a clip of his podcast interview with Frrest Galante — a well-known adventurer. Sharing a YouTube link, Mr Rogan captioned it as saying, “Were dragons real animals?”

“It’s so possible that something that flew like a pterodactyl, like we think of pterodactyls as being like bat wings, maybe they had feathers, maybe that a gigantic predatory bird and maybe some of those things looked like dragons,” Rogan said in the video.

Afterwards, Mr Rogan went on a spree on his X timeline, posting a number of messages and links, strengthening his argument about dragons being real.

Earlier this week, Sunny Hostin was forced to read a legal disclaimer on air after alleging that former Attorney General nominee, Matt Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old girl and was engaged in illegal sex trafficking.

Donald Trump’s Veep Pick JD Vance Triggers Row https://artifex.news/teens-become-trans-to-get-into-ivy-leagues-jd-vance-triggers-row-joe-rogan-6919289/ Fri, 01 Nov 2024 04:48:22 +0000 https://artifex.news/teens-become-trans-to-get-into-ivy-leagues-jd-vance-triggers-row-joe-rogan-6919289/ Read More “Donald Trump’s Veep Pick JD Vance Triggers Row” »

Republican Vice-Presidential nominee JD Vance recently triggered a row by making controversial remarks on transgender and nonbinary people, suggesting that some white children are incentivised to “become” trans to get college admissions into Ivy Leagues.

Mr Vance made the statement during an interview podcast with Joe Rogan.

“If you are a middle-class or upper-middle-class white parent, and the only thing that you care about is whether your child goes into Harvard or Yale, obviously that pathway has become a lot harder for a lot of upper-middle class kids…The one way that those people can participate in the DEI (Diversity, equity, and inclusion) bureaucracy in this country is to be trans,” he told Mr Rogan.

Mr Vance also had some outrageous views on transgender rights and whether they should be allowed to play on sports teams that match their gender identity.

“I’m the father of a two-year-old daughter. I don’t want her going into athletic competitions where I’m terrified she’s gonna get bludgeoned to death because we’re allowing a six-foot-one male to compete with her in sports,” he said.

According to Mr Vance, Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump may get the “normal gay” vote.

“I won’t be surprised if Trump won the normal gay guy vote because again, they just wanted to be left alone,” he said.

Abortion Rights

Mr Vance also touched upon abortion rights in the US and spoke dismissively of it. According to him, women are “publicly celebrating their abortions by baking birthday cakes and posting about it” – which Mr Rogan disagreed with.

“I think it’s six weeks is a limit to when you can have an abortion, which a lot of people think then you can’t even tell whether or not you are pregnant, and this puts a lot of women in very vulnerable positions. And then there is this thought that they could go to another state where it is legal and have an abortion, but they could be possibly prosecuted for that in their state. That’s concerning to me,” Mr Rogan said.

To this, Mr Vance said that he has “not heard of any women being arrested for traveling to have an abortion”.

Mr Vance, in the three-hour episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, also spoke on Mr Trump’s assassination attempt and climate change. He also joked about recent US President Joe Biden’s “garbage” comment against Mr Trump, saying that Mr Biden is helping the former US President win the election.
