New Delhi:
Maharashtra saw a saffron wave as the BJP-led Mahayuti decimated the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi in state elections while INDIA bloc held its fortress in Jharkhand. Bypoll results were also declared for 48 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha seats.

Here are the top 10 points in this big story:

  1. Mahayuti – an alliance of the BJP and the Shiv Sena and NCP factions led by Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar – swept the Maharashtra polls, winning 235 of the total 288 seats. The BJP got the largest share – 132, followed by Sena (57) and NCP (41).

  2. The Maha Vikas Aghadi – comprising Congress and the Shiv Sena and NCP factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar, together won 49 seats, less than half of the BJP’s solo tally.

  3. Sena (UBT) was the highest scorer in the opposition camp with 20 seats while the Congress ended with 16. Sharad Pawar’s NCP won just 10 seats, the worst ever performance by the veteran politician.

  4. Having lost their party’s name and symbol to mutinies by their trusted aides, this was a prestige battle for both Mr Thackeray and Mr Pawar and the crushing defeat now raises a question mark on their political future.

  5. The defeat is followed by another blow for the opposition bloc – Maharashtra assembly may not have a Leader of Opposition this time. A party with 10 percent of 288 or 29 seats can claim the post, but none in the MVA have reached the mark.

  6. The dilemma now for the Mahayuti will be to choose a leader for the top post. Both Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis – the two top contenders for the Chief Minister’s post – have asserted that they will consult all allies and take a decision together.

  7. In Jharkhand, the INDIA bloc won 56 out of 81 seats while the NDA ended with 24. Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha bagged the highest number of seats – 34 – while Congress won 16, Rashtriya Janata Dal 4, and CPI(ML)(L) 2.

  8. For the Congress, the bright spot was Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s debut from Wayanad, which was vacated by Rahul Gandhi as he moved to his mother’s Rae Bareli seat. She won the Kerala seat by a whopping 4 lakh votes, a bigger margin than her brother. The Congress also won the other parliamentary bypoll in Maharashtra’s Nanded.

  9. The assembly by-elections saw the NDA win 20 out of the total 48 seats. The saffron alliance performed well in Assam, Rajasthan, and Bihar, and dealt a setback to Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress won three seats in Karnataka while Trinamool swept all six in Bengal.

  10. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed party workers at the BJP headquarters last evening and congratulated the Mahayuti alliance for the historic mandate. His speech included a message of unity that has been part of the Maharashtra campaign discourse – “ek hain toh safe hai (united we are safe)”.

The JMM looks set to not only return to power, but also better its 2019 tally.

New Delhi:

For Hemant Soren, the beginning and end of 2024 could not have been more different.

Less than a month into the year, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader was taken into custody by the Enforcement Directorate in a land scam case and he had made sure he resigned as the Jharkhand chief minister before he was arrested. Now, with a month left in the year, Mr Soren has emerged as the architect of a thumping victory, ensuring that the INDIA alliance remains in power in the state and he gets a second straight term as chief minister.

The JMM leader also suffered multiple other setbacks in between.

After Mr Soren’s arrest on January 31, his sister-in-law, Sita Soren – the wife of his late brother Durga Soren – joined the BJP in March. She was miffed over alleged moves to make Mr Soren’s wife, Kalpana, the chief minister in his absence and was expelled from the JMM for ‘anti-party’ activities in May.

The former chief minister was then granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court in June, five months after his arrest. The court held that, prima facie, he was not guilty and was not likely to commit a similar offence, noting that both conditions for bail under the stringent Prevention of Money Laundering Act had been met.

Champai Soren – a close aide of JMM chief Shibu Soren and widely seen as the number three in the party – was appointed the chief minister in Hemant Soren’s absence. Trouble began brewing, however, when the party asked him to resign in July after Mr Soren’s release.

“When the leadership had changed, I was given responsibility. You know the sequence of events. After Hemant Soren came back, we (the coalition) picked him as our leader and I have resigned. I am following the decision taken by the coalition,” an upset Champai Soren had said after resigning in July.

He joined the BJP a month later, claiming that he had been “humiliated and insulted” and wanted to deliver justice to the people. The BJP also accused the JMM-Congress alliance of allowing “infiltration” in the state, an issue that appeared to be gaining traction among voters.

Despite all this, and some seat-sharing trouble with allies like the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Mr Soren ensured that his party bettered its tally to a projected 33 this year in the 81-member Assembly, up from 30 in 2019. Good performances from the Congress, RJD and CPI (ML) have taken the ruling coalition’s number to 55, with the BJP-led alliance ahead in only 25 seats.

Jharkhand Election Results: Hemant Soren’s JMM is poised to form government again.

New Delhi:

As the JMM-led INDIA bloc crossed the majority mark in the Jharkhand Assembly elections, Chief Minister Hemant Soren took to social media to share a photograph of him and his children. The JMM chief and his wife Kalpana Soren are parents to two boys. Sharing a picture of his two sons, he wrote, “My strength.”

The ruling JMM-led alliance – which includes the Congress and the RJD – under Mr Soren’s leadership, appears poised to secure a majority in the 81-member Assembly, as per the latest Election Commission data. With leads in 51 seats, the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance seems to have effectively countered the BJP-led NDA, which was ahead in 29 constituencies.

The BJP entered the fray with aggressive campaigning, focusing on issues such as “infiltrators” in the Santhal Parganas region. However, this narrative appears to have been overshadowed by the JMM’s emphasis on tribal identity and local pride, particularly amidst controversies surrounding Mr Soren’s legal battles and allegations of corruption.

According to the latest trends, the JMM was leading in 31 seats, the Congress in 14, and the RJD in four. The BJP held 26 leads, while smaller parties, including the AJSU Party and LJP (Ram Vilas), were ahead in a few scattered constituencies.

Key figures in the race include BJP state president Babulal Marandi, who maintained a lead in Dhanwar, and Congress heavyweight Rameshwar Oraon, who led in Lohardaga. On the JMM front, Mr Soren himself held a comfortable lead in Barhait, while his wife, Kalpana Soren, was trailing in Gandey.

The elections saw a record voter turnout of 67.74%, the highest since Jharkhand’s formation in 2000. Held in two phases on November 13 and 20, the polls reflected a deeply divided electorate. Exit polls had predicted a range of outcomes, with some forecasting a clear NDA win, while others saw the JMM-led bloc emerging victorious.

The JMM’s steady climb in the early hours of counting, despite a BJP surge, highlights the shifting dynamics of Jharkhand’s political landscape. The party’s grassroots connections, coupled with its emphasis on tribal rights and welfare, seem to have paid dividends against the BJP’s focus on national issues.

As counting progresses, the INDIA bloc appears confident of crossing the majority mark of 41 seats. If the trends hold, Hemant Soren is set to return as Chief Minister, buoyed by what he has described as the “strength” drawn not just from his family but also from the people of Jharkhand.

Mr Raut alleged a “money machine” was installed in every constituency.

New Delhi:

With leads pointing to a rout for his party and the Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut claimed that there is something amiss (‘gadbad’) in the election and said that the projected results are not acceptable to the opposition coalition. He also called for elections to be held again, using ballot papers.

The BJP has hit back, saying that the Rajya Sabha MP suffers from mental bankruptcy.

As of 11.30 am, the ruling Mahayuti, consisting of the BJP, the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, was ahead in 220 of Maharashtra’s 288 seats. The Mahayuti, which has the Congress, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) as its constituents, was projected to win just 56. Even the Shiv Sena (UBT) scion, Aaditya Thackeray, was trailing Milind Deora of the rival Sena faction by 600 votes.

If the numbers hold, it will be an unprecedented victory for the Mahayuti, and Mr Raut said this was one of the reasons he felt that the numbers were suspect.

“There is definitely something amiss,” the Rajya Sabha MP said, but refused to elaborate on whether he was referring to electronic voting machines or something else.

“A money machine was installed in every constituency. Eknath Shinde was saying that he would resign if any of his sitting MLAs lost. Does this happen in any election? What kind of confidence and what kind of a democracy is this? Does anyone get more than 200 seats? There has been dishonesty (‘beimani’) in the state. The results are such that you have implied that the voters of the state are dishonest; the voters of this state are not dishonest,” Mr Raut thundered.

Asked whether his party would accept the results, he said, “No, and I think even the people will not accept the results. I am saying again and again that this cannot be the people’s verdict… How is it possible for Eknath Shinde’s faction to get 60 seats, for Ajit Pawar to get 40 seats and for the BJP to win 125 seats?”

In a post on X later, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader repeated the charges and also called for elections to be held again, using ballot papers.

As of 11.30 am, the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde was leading in 54 seats – just two lower than the undivided party’s tally in 2019 – while the Shiv Sena (UBT) was ahead in 20.

Hitting out at Mr Raut, BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said the opposition cries foul and begins raising questions about EVMs whenever the results are not in its favour.

“Sanjay Raut suffers from mental bankruptcy and no one takes him seriously in Maharashtra. The results in Wayanad (where Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is winning) are fine… the INDIA alliance feels that they will win in Jharkhand and the EVMs are fine there, EVMs were fine in Jammu and Kashmir. But there is something amiss in Haryana and  Maharashtra. Whenever they (opposition parties) lose an election or a case in court, they start abusing EVMs, the Election Commission and courts,” Mr Poonawalla sneered.
