Gurugram:

A man was arrested for allegedly defrauding a person by posing as a representative of a matrimonial site, police said on Monday.

The accused, Jafir Ansari, from Jargarhi village in Jharkhand’s Deoghar district, was arrested from Chennai on Sunday, they said.

Police recovered 14 mobile phones, a silver bar, eight Aadhaar cards, six ATM and credit cards, and a PAN card from his possession, officials added.

A man lodged a complaint in Cyber Crime police station (South) alleging that on December 2, Rs 1988 was automatically debited from his bank account as a part of the company’s auto-pay feature, they said.

On December 3, he searched for the platform’s customer care number online to deactivate the auto-pay feature, police said.

After contacting a number listed on the internet, he received a return call after sometime. The caller claimed to assist him and later switched to a WhatsApp call, citing network issues, they said.

In his complaint he said that the caller sought personal information, under the guise of help. Sensing something was amiss, the complainant contacted his bank’s customer care to close his account, the police said.

However, by then Rs 5 lakh had already been withdrawn from his account, they added, citing his complaint.

Following the complaint, an FIR was registered and a team led by Inspector Naveen Kumar traced and arrested the accused, the police said.

During interrogation, Ansari revealed that he and his associates posed as the matrimonial site’s customer care representatives, using manipulated contact numbers that appeared in online search results, they said.

The accused targeted users seeking assistance, gaining access to sensitive bank account information by sending malicious links and persuading victims to share their screens, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cyber) Priyanshu Dewan said.

He said that efforts are underway to nab the rest of Ansari’s associates.

Physical tests under Jharkhand excise constable examinations began on August 22 (Representational)

Ranchi:

Eleven candidates died while undertaking physical tests during a drive to recruit excise constables in Jharkhand, police said on Sunday.

Physical tests under the Jharkhand excise constable competitive examinations began on August 22 in seven centres across Ranchi, Giridih, Hazaribag, Palamu, East Singhbhum and Sahebganj districts.

Four deaths happened in Palamu, two persons each died in Giridih and Hazaribag, and one person each in Ranchi’s Jaguar centre, and East Singhbhum’s Mosabani and Sahebganj centres, said IG (Operations) Amol V Homkar.

He said cases of unnatural death were registered and investigations were underway.

A total of 1,27,772 aspirants appeared for the physical tests till August 30, out of which 78,023 cleared it, he added.

Mr Homkar said adequate arrangements, including medical teams, medicines, ambulance, mobile toilets and drinking water, were ensured at all centres.

Alleging that the deaths happened due to mismanagement by the authorities, the BJP youth wing demonstrated against the JMM-led government in Ranchi’s Albert Ekka Chowk.

Dhanbad:

Rats were blamed for destroying 10 kg of bhang and nine kg of ganja, confiscated and stored in a police station in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district.

The police informed the matter to a court in the district, an advocate associated with the case concerned said on Sunday.

The police submitted a report to Principal District and Sessions Judge Ram Sharma on Saturday after the court directed the officer in-charge of Rajganj police station to produce the bhang and ganja seized six years ago.

The officer in his report said that rats had completely destroyed the narcotics substances stored in the malkhana (store) of the police station.

A report has also been registered in this regard at the police station, the officer said.

On December 14, 2018, Rajganj police arrested one Shambhu Prasad Agrawal and his son with 10 kg of bhang and nine kg of ganja. An FIR had also been lodged against them in the police station.

During the trial, the court had ordered the Investigating Officer in the case, Jayprakash Prasad, to produce the confiscated bhang and ganja in court on April 6.

“Prasad appeared in the court on Saturday with an application of the Rajganj police station officer in-charge saying that rats destroyed all confiscated material,” defence lawyer in the case, Abhay Bhatt, told PTI.

Bhatt said it appeared that his client was framed in false cases, as the police could not be able to exhibit the confiscated materials.

According to the police, seven people are involved in the case and three have been arrested.

Dumka (Jharkhand):

Jharkhand Police has handed over a compensation of Rs 10 lakhs to the husband of a Spanish woman who was allegedly gang-raped in Dumka on Friday.

According to the police, the Spanish woman was gang-raped in Hansdiha police station limits when she was en route to Nepal from West Bengal.

“We did a fast investigation and from the side of district administration, we are providing all the help to them (rape survivor and husband). Under the victim compensation scheme, we have given them Rs 10 lakh. We will try for a speedy trial and conviction of the accused,” Anjaneyulu Dodde, Deputy Commissioner, said on Monday.

The woman and her husband were on a bike tour across India and the incident reportedly happened when they were resting inside a tent in a deserted area in Kurmahat village.

The husband of the rape survivor thanked the police for the very “fast investigation”.

According to the police, seven people are involved in the case and three have been arrested.

They were remanded in judicial custody after being produced in a local court on Sunday.

The incident sparked a scathing attack from the BJP against the state government.

“This is a stain on the state. This shows the deteriorating law and order situation in the state and that even foreigners aren’t safe here. The police should act soon, and the government should also take cognizance of it and take strict action against such anarchists. This government has completely failed,” Anant Ojha, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, said on Saturday.

Referring to the incident, Jharkhand Minister Banna Gupta said that the state government is committed to taking strict action against the accused.
