West Indies crashed to a 127-run loss against Pakistan in the first Test in Multan, but it wasn’t on a sour note for all players of the team. In fact, despite the crushing defeat, West Indies bowlers Gudakesh Motie, Jomel Warrican and Jayden Seales set a record – not with the ball, but with the bat. The trio set the record of the first instance in the 148 years of Test cricket history, since the first Test match in March, 1877, when the three last batters made the highest scores for the team in an innings.

In their first innings, West Indies were tottering at 66/8, but managed to post 137 in the end thanks to the efforts of their number 9, 10 and 11 batters. Motie, coming in at No. 9, scored 19 runs, No. 10 Warrican top-scored with 31 and No. 11 Seales hit 22.

No other batter in the top eight crossed more than 11, making this the first instance in Test cricket history that the three highest scores in an innings have come from the last three batters.

It was also only the third time in Test cricket history that the top two run-scorers in an innings were the last two batters.

Hilariously, all three batters got out for ducks in the second innings, as West Indies collapsed to 123 all out and lost the game by a massive margin.

Despite the defeat, it was a memorable Test match for Warrican. Having picked up three wickets in the first innings, Worrican picked up his best-innings figures of 7/32 in the second, ending with career-best Test match figures of 10/101.

The second Test between Pakistan and West Indies starts on January 25, also at Multan. West Indies need to win the match to avoid finishing last in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle table.

Pakistan vs West Indies, 1st Test Day 2 LIVE Updates: Day 2 of the first Test between Pakistan and West Indies got off to a bleak start, much like Day 1, with the start of play delayed due to dense fog in Multan. Only 41.3 overs of play were possible on the first day, where Pakistan rebuilt to 143/4 at Stumps, after tottering at 46/4 at one stage. Wicket-keeper batter Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel are at the crease, having both completed their half-centuries on Day 1. West Indies’ 23-year-old pacer Jayden Seales impressed with three wickets, but they will look to the likes of Gudakesh Motie to bag them more wickets in the spin-friendly conditions. Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan hit unbeaten half-centuries to lead a Pakistan fightback in the first Test against the West Indies on Friday as the hosts reached 143-4 at the close of a fog-hit opening day. When bad light in Multan ended play with just 41.3 overs bowled, Shakeel was on 56 for his ninth half- century and Rizwan was 51 not out for his 11th. The pair added 97 after coming together with Pakistan in real trouble at 46-4. The left-right combination of Shakeel and Rizwan negotiated the three-spinner West Indies attack with aplomb after fast bowler Jayden Seales initially left the home team struggling.

“This pitch is tough to bat on,” said Rizwan.

“We batted with caution and just took advantage of loose balls. It’s tough to judge what should be a good total, but we will target 300 plus.”

Sensing the dry and grassless Multan Stadium pitch will be tricky for batting on the last two days — and with spin set to play a major role — the home team opted to bat after winning the toss.

But play was delayed because of early morning fog compounded by poor air quality, resulting in limited visibility and wiping out the first session.

Shakeel has so far cracked four boundaries while Rizwan has seven hits to the fence.

Seales finished with 3-21 off 10 overs.

“My aim was to build pressure and get wickets,” he said. “I sense spin will play a major role on this pitch going forward.”

Both teams started with three spinners and just one frontline fast bowler, and the tourists opened the bowling with left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie alongside Seales.

It was Seales who provided the breakthrough, forcing an edge off debutant Muhammad Hurraira to wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach in the sixth over. Hurraira scored six.

Three overs later, Motie dismissed skipper Shan Masood off a faint edge to the wicketkeeper for 11, before Seales trapped Kamran Ghulam leg-before with a sharp incoming delivery for five.

It became 46-4 when Babar Azam edged Seales behind the wicket for eight, continuing a poor run of scores at home for Pakistan’s premier batter.

The two-match series is part of the World Test Championship. Pakistan currently rank eighth and the West Indies ninth and last.

West Indies pacer Jayden Seales achieved a remarkable feat with his four-wicket haul on Day 2 of the 2nd Test against Bangladesh on Monday at Sabina Park in Kingston. Seales scripted his name on the record book as he delivered the best economical spell in men’s Test cricket since 1978. He achieved the milestone against Bangladesh in the 2nd Test. The Caribbean bowler picked up four wickets and gave just five runs in his 16-over spell. The 23-year-old had an economy rate of 0.30, which is considered the best figure a bowler achieved in Test cricket since 1978. Earlier in 2015, India pacer Umesh Yadav held the top place on the chart with a figure of 3/9 with an economy rate of 0.42.

Coming to the match, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat against the Caribbeans in the second Test.

Shadman Islam (64 runs from 137 balls, 5 fours and 1 six) and skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz (36 runs from 75 balls, 2 fours) were the only top batters for the tourists and they propelled Bangladesh to 164 in the first inning. Shahadat Hossain Dipu (22 runs from 89 balls, 2 fours) assisted the other two batters to add some runs on the scoreboard.

The rest of the Bangladesh batters crumbled infront of the West Indies bowling attack.

Jayden Seales led the Caribbean bowling attack as he picked up four wickets and gave just four runs. Shamar Joseph too had a good spell in the second Test as he bagged three wickets. Meanwhile, Kemar Roach took two wickets and Alzarri Joseph picked one wicket in their respective spells.

Kraigg Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis opened for the Caribbeans in their first inning. The openers could only make a 25-run partnership. Nahid Rana made the first breakthrough of the inning as he removed Louis from the inning.

West Indies ended the second day at 70/1, with Kraigg Brathwaite and Keacy Carty unbeaten on 33 (115) and 19 (60), respectively.
