Telugu choreographer Jani Master was today granted bail by the Telangana High Court in a sexual harassment case. Master – who has worked on dance sequences in big-ticket films like ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Pushpa: The Rise’ – was arrested last month after a 21-year-old employee accused him of sexual harassment over several years, including when she was a minor.

The young woman said she first met Jani Master – whose real name is Shaik Jani Basha – at an event in 2017. Two years later he offered her a job as an assistant choreographer, which she accepted.

The alleged sexual assaults took place subsequently, including once at a hotel Master and she, as well as two other male dancers, were staying in during a show in Mumbai.

The woman also accused Master of threatening her with physical violence if she filed a complaint, and that he mentally harassed her during photoshoots and rehearsals.

Master reportedly even forced her to convert and ‘marry’ him, despite being married; on one occasion, she has said, both Master and his wife entered her room and slapped her.

He was arrested on September 19 amid a MeToo row in Tollywood and Mollywood.

Earlier this month, the National Film Awards Cell of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting suspended the National Film Award to be presented to Master, citing allegations of sexual assault.

He would have been felicitated at the ceremony for his work on the song “Megham Karukkatha” in 2022’s Tamil movie “Thiruchitrambalam”.

On Thursday, Master – suspended by the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce and a workers’ union – was taken into custody in Bengaluru and will be shifted to Hyderabad. The choreographer has worked on films like ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Pushpa: The Rise’.

In her complaint, she said Jani Master and two other male assistants had travelled to Mumbai.

The woman said she was normally accompanied by her mother but was not this time since her tickets were not available. The woman has also accused Master of threatening her with physical violence if she filed a complaint, and that he mentally harassed her during photoshoots and rehearsals.

The police in the remand report said the victim, who was 16 at the time, was sexually abused multiple times for four years.

According to the complaint he even forced her to convert to his religion and ‘marry’ him.

On Tuesday, actor Jhansi, the Chairperson of the Chamber’s panel to probe sexual harassment claims told NDTV the allegations against Master – rape and criminal intimidation – will attract charges under the stringent POCSO, or Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Jani Master is also a member of actor-politician Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena, which is allied with the Telugu Desam Party of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

The Jana Sena has ordered Master to stay away from its political events at this time.

An FIR has been filed against renowned choreographer in the Telugu film industry, Jani Master, after a former colleague accused him of sexually assaulting her multiple times over several years.  

The complainant has alleged that the sexual harassment started when she was still a minor. A case has now been registered against Jani Master, who has worked as a choreographer in big-ticket movies such as Baahubali and Pushpa: The Rise.

The woman has alleged multiple incidents of sexual assault. She had approached the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce with allegations against the choreographer. The film body has a panel to tackle sexual harassment cases. Jhansi, actor and the chairperson of the panel, told NDTV that the complainant was a minor when the sexual assault first started and this would attract provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The film body took over the matter and advised her to approach the police too.

The film body also asked the Telugu dance directors’ body, of which Jani Master is president, not to allow him to discharge any function.

An FIR has been registered following a complaint by the woman. Jani Master has been charged under sections of rape and criminal intimidation. The woman has said in her complaint that she had worked with Jani Master as an assistant.

The choreographer, she has alleged, sexually assaulted her multiple times during their shoots in different cities. She has also said she faces a threat to her life and that the accused had also threatened that she won’t get any work opportunities.

Jani Master is a member of the Pawan Kalyan-led Jana Sena, which is part of the ruling coalition in Andhra Pradesh. The Jana Sena said Jani Master has been asked to stay away from the party’s events.

Police in Telangana’s Rayadurgam have filed a ‘zero’ FIR, or a first information report, based on a complaint by the woman who said Jani Master, who has also worked in Kannada and Hindi films, assaulted multiple times, including once at a Mumbai hotel.

The cops are trying to contact the woman to record a detailed statement, but she is “unreachable” at this time, Chief Inspector Krishna Reddy told reporters Tuesday afternoon.

According to the woman, she met Master at an event in 2017. Two years later he offered her a job as an assistant choreographer, which she accepted. The alleged sexual assault took place after that – at a hotel Master and she, and other dancers, were staying in during a Mumbai show.

In her complaint she said Jani Master and two other male assistants had travelled to Mumbai.

The woman said she would normally have been accompanied by her mother, but was not this time since there tickets were not available. She also claimed Master threatened her if she told anyone of the assault and continued to harass her during shoots.

According to the complaint he even forced her to convert to his religion and ‘marry’ him.

Over the next few months Master would apparently frequently summon her to his cabin and sexually assault her, threatening to ruin her career if she did not comply each time.

The woman has also alleged Master would show up at her home some nights and, on one occasion, his wife (he was already married) and Master barged into her room and slapped her.

Meanwhile, acting swiftly to evade political backlash, actor-politician Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party (a member of the BJP-led alliance at the centre) has ordered Master to stay away from its events.

Master, a member of the Jana Sena, has told local media he has not been expelled, and has no issues with the party leadership’s instruction.

The allegation comes amid over churn in the Kerala movie business after the release of a partly redacted judicial committee report triggered an avalanche of sex assault allegations against senior actors and filmmakers. That list includes M Mukesh – an MLA with Kerala’s ruling CPIM.

Popular actors and directors like Nivin Pauly, Jayasurya, Mukesh, and Siddique all face multiple charges of assault and/or rape, and are being investigated by a special police team set up by the Kerala government. They have all denied the claims and labelled them “baseless”.

The allegations roiling the Kerala film industry, called Mollywood, include some shocking stories, like actor Sowmya saying she was “groomed as a sex slave” by a director from Tamil Nadu. They have also led to a fierce political fight between the CPIM and the opposition.

And it isn’t just the Kerala movie industry in the spotlight; the Congress has come under attack after one a state leaders, Simi Bell John, spoke of a ‘casting couch’ in the party’s state ranks. The claim has been denied and Ms John expelled for “colluding with political rivals”.
