Defending champions Bayer Leverkusen host Bayern Munich on Saturday needing a “perfect day” to defeat the Bavarian giants and keep the Bundesliga title race alive. Bayern come to Leverkusen with an eight-point lead at the top of the table. Both sides have only lost once in the league this season but Leverkusen have been let down by their inability to win close games, with seven draws compared to Bayern’s three. Stung by failing to win a title last year, Vincent Kompany‘s Bayern are in ominous form, having won seven league games in a row.

A win, or even a draw on Saturday for Bayern, will deal a likely fatal blow to Leverkusen’s hopes of winning back-to-back titles.

However, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso‘s record against Bayern will give the hosts hope.

Since taking over Leverkusen in October 2022, Alonso has won three and drawn two of five games against Bayern.

The most recent of those victories came in December, when Leverkusen eliminated Bayern from the German Cup in Munich after home captain Manuel Neuer saw red for the first time in his career.

In an interview with the Bundesliga website on Thursday, Leverkusen talisman Granit Xhaka backed his side.

“We can make it difficult for anyone, including Bayern Munich, we need a perfect day to beat this team, but I’m convinced we can do this,” he said.

“We won’t play for a draw, we want to win every game, whether that’s against Bayern on Saturday, or against any other team.

“Everything is still in our hands, we’ll keep going, keep believing, and try and win the next games.”

Unlike Bayern, who battled to a 2-1 victory at Celtic in the Champions League play-offs on Wednesday, Leverkusen could put their feet up in midweek, having finished in the top eight of the competition.

Both sides are benefiting from rich veins of form from their strikers.

Having struggled with a hamstring injury in December, Harry Kane has bounced back for Bayern and has nine goals in his past eight games in all competitions.

Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick is also among the goals. The Czech striker has 14 goals in his past 11 league outings.

Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund can build on their midweek 3-0 Champions League win at Sporting Lisbon, their first win under new coach Niko Kovac, when they play at rock-bottom Bochum on Saturday.

Third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, who have drawn their past three games, will also want to get their top-four bid back on track when they face Holstein Kiel.

One to watch: Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen)

Sitting behind Patrick Schick, Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz has pulled the strings all season.

So far this season, nine of Schick’s 20 goals have been assisted by Wirtz.

Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro, who oversaw Wirtz’s last contract extension with the club in 2022, told AFP in an interview on Thursday the 21-year-old “definitely makes it look easy — and that’s what makes him special.

“He has a view of the whole field. His technique, his first touch is amazing… Not that many are on his level.

Key stats

24 – St Pauli sit 14th but have conceded just 24 goals in 21 games. Only league leaders Bayern Munich have conceded fewer, with 19.

October 2021 – The date of Bayern’s last win in Leverkusen.

21 in 19 – Harry Kane has 21 goals in 19 league games this campaign, including nine penalties.

Jamal Musiala came off the bench to rescue an injury-hit Bayern Munich, scoring twice in a 4-2 win over lowly Heidenheim, sending his side six points clear in the Bundesliga on Saturday. With the top four sides all playing teams in the bottom half in this round, second-placed Frankfurt let a one-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 at home with Augsburg. Bayern dominated proceedings but were unable to turn pressure into points, with Harry Kane‘s absence telling. The German giants were one goal up at half-time after Dayot Upamecano headed from a corner 18 minutes in.

The France defender turned villain early into the second period when he passed directly to Mathias Honsak, who gleefully accepted the invitation to equalise.

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany, whose side were eliminated in the German Cup by Bayer Leverkusen midweek, brought Musiala off the bench and the 21-year-old blasted in five minutes later.

Leon Goretzka‘s late goal put Bayern on course but Heidenheim scored again, this time through Niklas Dorsch, to keep the heat on the home side,

Musiala would have the final say, dribbling on the counter from the half-way line and scoring his second.

Bayern veteran Thomas Mueller praised Musiala, telling Sky “what he’s doing, we expect that from him now.

“We’re happy we’ve got him.”

Dortmund’s ‘frustrating’ stumble

Borussia Dortmund’s away woes continued ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Barcelona when they were held to a 1-1 draw with Borussia Moenchengladbach despite another stunning Jamie Gittens goal.

Gittens, who scored an excellent solo goal in last week’s 1-1 draw against Bayern, dribbled past three Gladbach defenders and blasted a shot in off the crossbar after 64 minutes to put Dortmund ahead.

Six minutes later, Pascal Gross held Tim Kleindienst away from a looping cross just inches from goal.

The hold was unnecessary as Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel got his fingers to the ball but a penalty was given on VAR review, with Kevin Stoeger converting.

Subbed on in the 89th minute, Gladbach’s Tomas Cvancara was sent off after picking up two yellows inside one stoppage-time minute, but the hosts held on to grab a point.

Dortmund have now drawn two and lost four of six away games this season.

“It’s frustrating to go home with just a point,” visiting captain Nico Schlotterbeck told Sky.

“As Dortmund you expect to win here” he added.

In Frankfurt, a goalless first half gave way to four goals in 19 second-half minutes.

Hugo Ekitike’s 55th-minute goal was cancelled out by a Phillip Tietz strike five minutes later.

Augsburg then took the lead through Samuel Essende, before Turkish teenager Can Uzun levelled things up three minutes later.

Frankfurt’s late efforts to find a winner were to no avail as the hosts dropped points in the league for the first time since late October.

Defending champions Leverkusen continued their recent resurgence, beating promoted St Pauli 2-1 thanks to first-half goals from Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah.

Injuries to Victor Boniface, Patrik Schick and Amine Adli deprived Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso of a centre-forward.

Wirtz however filled in nicely, finishing calmly in front of goal after eight minutes before Tah headed in from a cross midway through the second half.

Pauli’s Morgan Guilavogui scored late but it was not enough as Leverkusen held on to win their fifth straight game.

RB Leipzig got back to winning ways, defeating promoted Holstein Kiel 2-0 away, their first victory in the league since October.

Benjamin Sesko put the visitors in front 27 minutes in and Andre Silva converted a penalty to seal the game, his first Leipzig goal since January 2023.

Kiel fans unfurled a banner before the match depicting incoming Red Bull head of football Jurgen Klopp in crosshairs and saying the energy drinks company was “digging the grave of German football”.

Fans in Germany have been critical of Red Bulls’ involvement in the game, particularly their ownership of RB Leipzig.

Jens Stage scored the only goal as Werder Bremen won 1-0 at struggling Bochum, who have only two points in 13 games this season.

Bayern Munich were dumped out of the German Cup by holders Bayer Leverkusen as Nathan Tella’s second-half goal secured a 1-0 win for the Bundesliga champions on Tuesday, after Manuel Neuer saw the first red card of his 866-game career. The 38-year-old rushed out of the box in typical fashion 18 minutes in to the German Cup last-16 clash, taking out an advancing Jeremie Frimpong and seeing a straight red. Neuer’s sending-off brought Israel goalkeeper Daniel Peretz on for his Bayern debut, 18 months after joining the club.

Bayern, who were already without the injured Harry Kane, dug deep despite the one-man disadvantage and dominated the ball.

The visitors eventually broke through in the 69th minute, though, with Tella heading in an Alex Grimaldo cross.

Tella had only been on the field for eight minutes having come on for injured striker Patrik Schick, who himself was subbed on at half-time.

Home winger Michael Olise lashed inches wide in the fourth minute of stoppage time but Leverkusen held on to inflict a first domestic defeat on Vincent Kompany since he became Bayern coach.

“We were too hectic and tried to go forward too quickly,” Leverkusen captain Jonathan Tah told ARD. “At half-time, we said we need to be patient — and we did it.

“I didn’t know Nathan could be so good with his head.”

Neuer told reporters: “The red card decided the game. It hurt us and I’m sorry.”

Xabi Alonso‘s Leverkusen, who won an unbeaten league and cup double last season, are through to the last eight.

Bayern have won the German Cup a record 20 times — 14 more than the next best — but have not made it past the quarter-finals since 2020, when they defeated Leverkusen 4-2 in the final.

Elsewhere, a stoppage-time goal from Anthony Jung took Werder Bremen to the quarters with a 1-0 win over Darmstadt.

Stuttgart are also through after a 3-0 win at Regensburg, while Freiburg were knocked out by a 3-1 loss at Arminia Bielefeld.

Three-time winners Stuttgart were dominant against their second-division opponents, taking the lead just 10 minutes in thanks to a clever individual goal from Enzo Millot.

Japanese defender Anrie Chase headed in from a free-kick nine minutes later to double the visitors’ lead — his first goal for Stuttgart.

Nick Woltemade broke through and rounded the goalkeeper to score Stuttgart’s third.

Beaten finalists in 2022, Freiburg were heavy favourites to beat third-division Bielefeld and looked on course when Michael Gregoritsch won a penalty 15 minutes in, drawing a clumsy foul from Maximilian Grosser.

But Florent Muslija’s tame spot-kick was easily saved.

The hosts then took the lead thanks to an excellent long-range effort from Christopher Lannert on 28 minutes, before Gregoritsch gave away a penalty, which was nervelessly converted by Julian Kania nine minutes before the break.

Gregoritsch pulled one back just after the hour, but Louis Oppie put Bielefeld out of reach with a goal nine minutes from time.

On Wednesday, RB Leipzig — winners in 2022 and 2023 — host five-time winners Eintracht Frankfurt.

Harry Kane limped off but Jamal Musiala‘s 85th-minute header salvaged a 1-1 draw for Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich at the home of rivals Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. England captain Kane pulled up with a left thigh issue after 33 minutes, shortly after compatriot Jamie Gittens had opened the scoring for Dortmund. However, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said he was optimistic Kane’s injury was “not too bad” with Tuesday’s German Cup last-16 match against holders Leverkusen looming.

“He (Kane) says it’s not too serious. Let’s hope so,” said Kompany with the 31-year-old set to undergo scans.

Bayern’s seven-point lead can be cut to four when second-placed Eintracht Frankfurt play Heidenheim on Sunday.

Dortmund went back above Freiburg, who beat Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-1 on Saturday, into fifth place but remain 10 points behind the leaders.

This Klassiker was a meeting between the teams with the best home and away records in the Bundesliga, and always promised to be an entertaining contest.

Bayern started the game on top but Dortmund steadied the ship and took the lead in the 27th minute through Gittens’ superb individual goal.

Dortmund captain Nico Schlotterbeck spotted the run of Gittens, whose stepover left Konrad Laimer in his wake. His searing pace kept him clear of Laimer down the left flank and he finished expertly past Manuel Neuer

It was a moment of brilliance from the Englishman and a repayment to coach Nuri Sahin for the faith he has shown in the 20-year-old, handing him 14 starts already this season.

It was also the first goal Bayern had conceded since October 23, breaking a run of clean sheets that had stretched back eight games in all competitions.

Bayern’s problems were compounded five minutes later with the loss of Kane but Neuer kept the Bavarians in the game keeping out a Marcel Sabitzer shot with his right leg just after the hour mark.

Bayern controlled much of the second half but could not convert their ball superiority into goals, until Bayern’s best player on the night Musiala secured a point.

Leroy Sane’s free-kick struck the Dortmund wall, Sane found Michael Olise, whose pinpoint cross was nodded in by Musiala.

“We’re happy to have come back, I think we deserved it,” said Thomas Mueller, Kane’s replacement from the bench.

Schick keeps Leverkusen in touch

Earlier, Patrik Schick scored the winner as Bayer Leverkusen edged Union Berlin 2-1 to keep Bayern in sight.

Leverkusen had flown out of the blocks, taking the lead inside two minutes through Jeremie Frimpong before Jeong Woo-yeong struck back for the hosts to restore parity before the break.

But the champions found a winner in the 71st minute, with Czech forward Schick meeting Florian Wirtz‘s cross to settle a finely balanced game in their favour.

Wolfsburg pulled off a shock 5-1 win at RB Leipzig, giving former Leipzig coach Ralph Hasenhuettl a triumphant return to his former club.

Leipzig endured a nightmare start, with Wolfsburg leading 2-0 inside the first five minutes.

Algerian striker Mohamed Amoura opened the scoring in the fourth minute, with Tiago Tomas doubling the advantage a minute later.

Amoura added his second after 16 minutes, and Joakim Maehle piled on the misery for the hosts after the break.

Leipzig captain Willi Orban tapped in a late consolation, but it was too little, too late, as

Leipzig conceded four for the second consecutive league game and are now winless in six games, including four in the league, after their fast start to the season, slipping to fourth.

In contrast, Wolfsburg have climbed to seventh and are unbeaten in their last five league games.

Elsewhere, Freiburg held off Borussia Moenchengladbach to win 3-1 and bounce back from their 4-0 trouncing in Dortmund last weekend.

In Bremen, Stuttgart striker Ermedin Demirovic scored a brace as the visitors twice fought back to secure a 2-2 draw.

A first-half penalty by Phillip Tietz gave Augsburg a 1-0 win over Bochum, who remain rooted to the bottom of the table with two points.

An incredible long-range goal from Jamal Musiala took Bayern Munich five points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table with a 1-0 win at St Pauli on Saturday, as their major title rivals stumbled. While Bayern fought hard to win in Hamburg, defending champions Bayer Leverkusen, second-placed RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund all dropped points. St Pauli, promoted in the summer, fought hard against their heavily favoured opponents and wanted to avoid a repeat of the 8-1 thrashing handed out last time Bayern visited.

Musiala, who scored the only goal in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Benfica, won the ball centrally before advancing and letting fly from just under 30 metres, his shot bouncing in off the crossbar.

The 21-year-old now has scored five in his past four games since returning from a hip injury.

Musiala told Sky Germany he “didn’t know” he could shoot from such a distance, adding: “I’ve practiced a bit in training to shoot from distance… but not that far!

“That it went in today made me happy… It was my first goal from outside the box this season and I’m always trying to work on different things to improve myself.”

RB Leipzig were held to a scoreless draw at home with Borussia Moenchengladbach, the Saxons’ third 0-0 in the league this season.

Gladbach, floating in mid-table, were stronger in the opening half, Germany striker Tim Kleindienst having a shot saved on the 22nd-minute mark and Franck Honorat hitting the crossbar.

Leipzig kicked into gear in the second, Christoph Baumgartner and Lois Openda both spurning good chances for the opener.

The draw means Leipzig have dropped five points in their past six games and are in danger of losing touch with Bayern.

“We threw everything into it but we were missing the last pass, the last bit of quality,” Leipzig striker Yussuf Poulsen told Sky.

“We wanted the win, we had the right attitude but we needed a bit more quality — we’ll work on it over the international break.”

Can sent off, Dortmund lose

Injury-hit Dortmund suffered yet another setback, losing 3-1 at Mainz after Emre Can was sent off in the 27th minute for a studs-up tackle on Lee Jae-sung.

Can, playing in the unfamiliar centre-back position, was replaced by Felix Nmecha, another midfielder, who was at fault for Mainz’s opener, allowing an unmarked Lee to head in.

Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy won and converted a penalty to level things up but Jonathan Burkardt put Mainz back in front just before half-time, slamming in a Danny da Costa pass from close range.

Paul Nebel added a third early in the second period to put Mainz on course for their first home win.

A frustrated Julian Brandt did not point the finger at his captain, saying “(Can) knows he has to be a bit more careful and he’s annoyed about what he did… but that’s not why we conceded three goals.”

Champions League finalists last season, Dortmund have lost their past six away games in all competitions.

Leverkusen’s title defence continued to stutter with a 1-1 draw at last-placed Bochum, who equalised in the final minute.

Leverkusen were ahead from the 18th minute onwards after Florian Wirtz slid a ball across the turf and into the path of Patrik Schick, who blasted home.

The visitors seemed on track for victory until Bochum’s Koji Miyoshi popped up to grab a loose ball after a mistake from Jonathan Tah and slide it in at the near post.

Leverkusen captain and goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky called the late goal “a bitter slap in the face”.

Leverkusen are now nine points behind Bayern and have dropped 13 points this campaign, more than they did across all 34 games last season.

The draw was just Bochum’s second point this season after 10 games in their first match under veteran coach Dieter Hecking.

Elsewhere, Werder Bremen won 2-1 at home against Holstein Kiel thanks to an 89th-minute goal from Oliver Burke.

A second-half Jamal Musiala goal got Bayern Munich back on track in the Champions League with a 1-0 home win over Benfica on Wednesday. Struggling in Europe after back-to-back losses left them outside the knockout places, Musiala broke through the stubborn Benfica defence, heading in a Harry Kane assist. Bayern were dominant in possession but carved out few clear-cut chances, lacking fluency in front of a silent home crowd who refused to sing out of respect for a hospitalised fan.

Despite the win, Bayern still have work to do in Europe, with this season’s Champions League final on home soil.

The German giants sit 17th, one behind Dinamo Zagreb who they beat 9-2 in their opener. Bayern face French champions Paris Saint-Germain next in the competition.

“We had good moments. The opponent defended well. It was very important to get three points today,” Musiala said after the match.

“We don’t have to win every game by four or five goals. Sometimes 1-0 is enough. We had to be patient. Now we carry on and look to the next game.”

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said: “Sometimes it’s good to win like this — even though we of course prefer to win by three or four.

“I knew we needed to stay patient and calm. We did that well. It was a good game and a good win.”

Unbeaten at the top of Bundesliga table under Kompany, Bayern have struggled in the Champions League this season despite the barnstorming opener against Zagreb.

A 1-0 loss at Aston Villa and a 4-1 thrashing by a supercharged Barcelona under former Bayern boss Hansi Flick had the six-time European champions flagging in the Champions League’s new single-league format.

With the match delayed by 15 minutes due to public transport issues and with their home fans silent due to a medical emergency in the stands, Bayern struggled.

Bayern captain Manuel Neuer told reporters the side “didn’t celebrate in the cabin like we normally would” due to the incident.

Musiala and Michael Olise dribbled in from either flank but were unable to break through a Benfica side looking to sit deep and take advantage of Bayern’s risky high line on the counter.

The best chance of the opening half fell to Serge Gnabry, who forced a strong save out of Anatoliy Trubin on the half-volley after 38 minutes.

As the game wore on Bayern grew nervous, even if Benfica had few genuine chances as they looked for a first win in their 11th match against the hosts.

Leroy Sane added speed after his substitution and the former Manchester City winger would prove crucial, finding Kane who in turn set up Musiala to break the deadlock with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Bayern’s final match before the international break comes on Saturday in Hamburg against St Pauli.

Germany have called up Stuttgart’s Jamie Leweling to replace Jamal Musiala.© AFP

Bayern Munich forward Jamal Musiala has been ruled out of this weekend’s Bundesliga clash with Eintracht Frankfurt and Germany’s two Nations League matches this month with a hip injury, the club said Friday. Musiala, 21, was named in Julian Nagelsmann’s squad on Wednesday for the games against Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Netherlands, but will play no part.

“Following an examination by the club’s medical staff, Jamal Musiala will be sidelined for the time being with a hip problem,” Bayern said on their social media accounts.

Musiala, who has played 36 times for Germany and scored six goals, has found the net three times so far this season for Bayern.

Germany have called up Stuttgart’s Jamie Leweling to replace him.

Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala turned on the style, laying on goals for each other, as a new-look Germany beat Hungary 5-0 in Duesseldorf on Saturday. The young forwards showed the future is bright for the football-mad nation after the retirements of 2014 World Cup winners Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos and Thomas Mueller, along with captain Ilkay Gundogan. After 27 minutes, Wirtz found Musiala who squared for Niclas Fuellkrug to open the scoring.

Wirtz’s long pass allowed Musiala to double Germany’s lead in the second-half, with the Bayern Munich forward returning the favour with an assist shortly after.

Aleks Pavlovic scored with 13 minutes remaining — his first goal in Germany colours — before Kai Havertz won and converted a penalty with nine minutes remaining.

With Wirtz and Musiala both 21 and Havertz 25, the convincing win suggests Germany has the talent to overcome this summer’s departures, two years out from the 2026 World Cup.

“It’s fun to play with Flo (Wirtz)” Musiala told ZDF, adding “we need to keep building our chemistry, using every game.”

“It’s a lot of fun,” Fuellkrug told ZDF. “I really enjoyed watching when Flo and Jamal got into it in the second half — they’re pretty hard to stop when they’re like that.

“We’re really lucky to have them in the team — it’s a gift. It’ll be fun for every German fan watching in the next few years.”

New captain Joshua Kimmich said “to start so dominantly and with such gravity — I’m just proud of the team.”

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, who on Friday doubled down on his publicly stated desire to win the next World Cup, praised the atmosphere in the camp.

“The chemistry is incredible and has been like that for three or four months — and we’ll need that if we want to fulfil our dreams.”

Nagelsmann praised Wirtz and Musiala, saying “when both are up for it and they step on the gas, it’s going to be tough.

“When they’re on the pitch and they connect with each other, it’s nice to watch.”

– New-look Germany –

Former Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross was asked to fill Kroos’ boots, while goalie Marc-Andre ter Stegen wore the Germany number one for the first time.

Unable to find a way to play the two forwards alongside each other at the Euros, Nagelsmann started both Fuellkrug and Havertz.

Yet to score since moving to West Ham in the summer, Fuellkrug gave Germany the lead after 27 minutes.

Wirtz found Musiala with a sublime chip, allowing the Bayern forward to square for Fuellkrug to score his 14th goal in 22 international matches.

Havertz missed two clear chances to close the opening half and Hungary were strong early in the second, until Wirtz unleashed Musiala on the counter to score after 58 minutes.

Musiala returned the favour just eight minutes later, cutting the ball for Wirtz who hit a low shot into the bottom corner of the net.

The goals opened the floodgates for the home side, with Aleks Pavlovic — who missed Euro 2024 with illness — scoring just before Havertz sealed the result from the spot.

Germany travel to face the Netherlands in Amsterdam on Tuesday, while Hungary host Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Harry Kane helped drag Bayern Munich to a come-from-behind 3-2 win at Wolfsburg on Sunday in new manager Vincent Kompany‘s Bundesliga debut. Jamal Musiala put Bayern 1-0 up after 19 minutes but Wolfsburg took the lead with two Lovro Majer goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Bayern were nervy, with Ralph Hasenhuettl’s side pouncing on several defensive errors. A Kane header forced Wolfsburg’s Jakub Kaminski into an own goal after 65 minutes and the England captain set up Bayern’s third, laying on a pass for Serge Gnabry‘s 82nd-minute strike.

“It’s not perfect yet”, Kane told Bayern TV after the match, saying his side “got punished a little” in the second-half.

“We’re still obviously implementing some of the ideas of the coach.

“Obviously, the team is a lot stronger than this. I’m happy we’ve got a good week to work now, to get to work on the ideas the coach wants.”

Bayern midfielder Joshua Kimmich echoed Kane’s sentiments on network DAZN, saying “we lost control of the game due to many mistakes”, adding they “reacted well” when they fell 2-1 behind.

With 20 minutes gone, Kane, starting his first match since the Euro 2024 final in Berlin, found Sacha Boey on the right flank.

The French defender dribbled past two Wolfsburg defenders and cut the ball across for Musiala, who tapped home to open the scoring.

Musiala has six goals in eight games against Wolfsburg, more than any other side.

Cool Majer

Wolfsburg were lucky to get away with what appeared to be a handball in the box 10 minutes later, with Kane shown a yellow card for remonstrating with the referee.

Bystanders in the first-half, Wolfsburg burst into life early in the second, grabbing the lead inside the first 10 minutes.

Boey, who was making just his second start for Bayern since joining in January, went from hero to villain just a minute after the break, bringing down Tiago Tomas in the box.

Majer coolly slotted home, sending Manuel Neuer the wrong way.

The Croatia midfielder hit the post with Neuer flatfooted just a minute later but did not need to wait long for another opportunity, his 55th-minute goal putting Wolfsburg in front.

Patrick Wimmer pressed Kim Min-jae into a mistake, collected possession and advanced on goal, drawing Neuer and laying off for Majer to score.

Kane was crucial in helping Bayern draw level after 65 minutes. The England captain headed a deflected Joshua Kimmich cross goalwards and the ball bounced in off Wolfsburg’s Kaminski.

Kane created Bayern’s winner with eight minutes remaining, finding Gnabry who booted home from close range.

Bundesliga winners in 2009, Wolfsburg have not beaten Bayern since 2015, a run of 21 matches.

Later on Sunday, promoted St Pauli host Heidenheim in the final match of the round.
