A 75-year-old retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer was allegedly assaulted by a bus conductor in Jaipur, for reportedly refusing to pay an extra fare of Rs 10, police said on Sunday.

The incident, a video of which has gone viral, took place on Friday, when the victim missed the correct bus stop, and was asked to pay an extra fare of Rs 10 for the ride till the next stop.

According to Kanota Station House Officer (SHO) Uday Singh, the retired bureaucrat, RL Meena, was supposed to alight at Kanota bus stand on Agra Road. The conductor, however, failed to inform him about the stop, following which the bus reached the next stop at Nayla.

An argument broke out when the conductor asked Mr Meena for the extra fare, but the latter refused to pay. As the conductor pushed Mr Meena, he slapped the conductor, who then assaulted him, Mr Singh said.

The 44-second viral video also shows the conductor continuously hitting the retired bureaucrat, as several passengers look on, till the victim deboards the bus.

Mr Singh said the conductor was identified as Ghanshyam Sharma. A complaint was registered against him on the basis of a complaint by Mr Meena at Kanota police station on Saturday, and a detailed probe is underway.

Sources said the accused conductor has been suspended by Jaipur City Transport Services Limited for misconduct.

The students outside the coaching centre in Jaipur.

Jaipur:

Nearly a dozen students fainted after fumes engulfed a coaching institute in Jaipur on Sunday evening.

According to the police, the cause of the fumes that enveloped Utkarsh Coaching Centre, in Gopalpur, could not be immediately ascertained.

A possible gas leak, toxic fumes from a gutter or smoke billowing from the kitchen of a house adjacent to the coaching facility are among the possible causes that are being investigated, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Yogesh Srivastav said.

There were 350 students inside the coaching centre at the time of the incident.

Some of them fainted as the windows and doors of the premises were shut, leading to suffocation, ACP Srivastav said.

Five students were taken to Somani Hospital while two were admitted in Metro Mass Hospital. The students are out of danger.

Rajasthan government has constituted a committee to probe the matter. (Representational)

Jaipur:

A 10-year-old boy allegedly bitten by a rat on one of his toes while undergoing treatment for cancer at a government hospital here has died, an official said on Saturday.

While the State Cancer Institute, where the boy was admitted on December 11, said the death was caused by “septicaemia shock and high infection” and not a rat bite, the Rajasthan government has constituted a committee to probe the matter.

Hospital superintendent Dr Sandeep Jasuja said, “The child also had fever and pneumonia. He died due to high infection septicaemia shock on Friday”.

Medical education secretary Ambrish Kumar has sought a report from the principal of Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Medical College which is associated with the State Cancer Institute, officials said.

According to a news report published in a vernacular daily shortly after being admitted, the child started crying. When his family members removed the blanket he was lying under, they saw blood oozing from one of his toes due to a rat bite.

The family members alerted the nursing staff present there who bandaged the leg after applying first aid.

Dr Sandeep Jasuja said that they treated the child as soon as they received the information about the rat bite. He said that directives have been sent to ensure cleanliness in the hospital premises.
