Niclas Fuellkrug gave Borussia Dortmund a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday as the journeyman striker outshone superstar Kylian Mbappe on the night. Seeking a return to the final for the first time since 2013, the 1997 winners were dogged and determined, outmuscling their heavily favoured opponents in front of more than 80,000 fans. Fuellkrug, playing in his first Champions League season at the age of 31, collected a lofted pass from centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck in the 36th minute and blasted a low shot into the left corner of the net.

PSG, led by Kylian Mbappe, hit the post twice in quick succession early in the second-half but could not break through.

“I think we today showed a classic team performance. Each helped the other to win the game. We needed a bit of luck a couple of times, but we can be very satisfied with our performance,” said long-serving centre-back Mats Hummels.

“It was a very satisfying, very grown-up performance from us.”

Dortmund, who had already lost and drawn against PSG this season in the group stage, can continue to dream of a return to Wembley 11 years after their last Champions League final.

Despite the setback, however, PSG will remain confident of overturning the deficit at home next week against a side they thoroughly outclassed at their home venue in September.

“The Parc (PSG’s stadium) and our supporters are giving us hope for the second leg, and we know we can do much better,” PSG captain Marquinhos told Canal+.

Dortmund manager Edin Terzic said pre-match PSG were “built to win the Champions League” since the Qatari takeover a decade ago.

Nowhere was the contrast between the two clubs greater than PSG’s global superstar Mbappe, playing in his last season for his hometown club, and journeyman Dortmund striker Fuellkrug, who was playing second-division football this time two years ago.

PSG hit post twice

Spurred on by a passionate home crowd who booed and whistled every Mbappe touch, Dortmund had the best of the opening stages, Jadon Sancho shining down the right flank.

Marcel Sabitzer had Dortmund’s best chance of an opener after 14 minutes, blasting straight at Gianluigi Donnarumma from a tight angle.

The opener came after 36 minutes thanks to some superb old-school forward play from Fuellkrug.

Centre-back Schlotterbeck had the ball well in his own half and thought about a safe pass back to the ‘keeper but instead punted it forward, with only Fuellkrug aware of the idea.

The striker controlled the ball with one touch and drilled a low shot past a helpless Donnarumma.

Fresh from wrapping up the Ligue 1 title at the weekend, PSG had few chances despite their attacking riches in the opening half, registering zero shots on target.

The visitors however sprung to life after half-time, Mbappe rattling the inside of one post seconds before former Dortmund wing-back Achraf Hakimi rattled the inside of the other.

PSG should have equalised after 56 minutes, Marquinhos curled a beautiful pass through a crowded Dortmund box but Fabian Ruiz’s diving header went wide.

Another former Dortmund player Ousmane Dembele blasted over right in front of goal with 10 minutes remaining.

The impressive Sancho laid on an excellent pass for Julian Brandt with moments left but Dortmund’s hopes of a second were snuffed out by some desperate PSG defending.

The victory, along with Tuesday’s 2-2 draw between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the other semi-final, guarantees Germany rather than England or France an extra Champions League place for next season.

That has already secured Dortmund’s place in the competition next season.

Even though both sides are in the shadow of Xabi Alonso‘s unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen, there is still plenty to play for in Saturday’s Bayern Munich-Borussia Dortmund clash. With a 10-point lead with eight games to play, Leverkusen are on course for a maiden Bundesliga crown. Second-placed Bayern could be as many as 13 points behind at kick-off, should Leverkusen win at home against Hoffenheim earlier on Saturday. A Leverkusen title would mark the first time since 2009, and just the fifth time in the past three decades, that neither Bayern nor Dortmund has finished atop the table.

Saturday’s match between the traditional powers remains crucial for both sides.

Bayern risk a first loss at home to their biggest domestic rivals since 2014.

They will also want to keep up their momentum ahead of a visit to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter finals in early April, the last piece of silverware the trophy-hungry club can reasonably expect this season.

While pride may be at stake for Bayern, fourth-placed Dortmund are in danger of missing the Champions League next season, with RB Leipzig one point behind.

For a club which relies heavily on Champions League income, missing out on the top four could have huge ramifications for Dortmund.

Former Bayern captain Philipp Lahm said fireworks were guaranteed on Saturday.

“A rivalry has risen between Dortmund and Bayern. It’s the Bundesliga, it’s the match of the round on Saturday,” Lahm told AFP.

“A lot is at stake, especially for Dortmund, because the Champions League is the minimal goal they want to achieve.”

Lahm welcomed Leverkusen’s challenge, saying “it’s very, very important that the Bundesliga is exciting again and that someone can push or even take over Bayern.”

In a stellar 659-game career, Lahm faced Dortmund more than any other opponent. He captained Bayern to a 2-1 win over their rivals in the 2013 Champions League final.

Since that match, Bayern have won 23 of 32 games between the clubs.

Bayern legend Lothar Matthaeus told AFP that he backed his former side to continue their recent dominance.

“The title race is over for Bayern Munich. This game is more important for Borussia Dortmund, but Bayern’s DNA is to win each and every game — and they’ll do it again.”

One to watch: Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)

Having shaken off an ankle injury which kept him out of England’s March friendlies, Harry Kane is fit and ready to take on Dortmund.

In his first ‘Klassiker’ appearance in November, Kane scored a hat-trick to demolish the home side.

Kane has 31 goals in 26 league games this season.

Dortmund manager Edin Terzic praised the striker on Thursday, telling reporters “Harry Kane has an outstanding tally in his first Bayern season.

“He’s extremely important for them in attack as we saw first hand. He has scored as many goals as our top three goalscorers put together.”

Key stats

70 – Bayer Leverkusen have 70 points with eight games remaining. Last year, Bayern and Dortmund finished on 71 after 34 games, with the Bavarians winning the title on goal difference.

56 – Third-placed Stuttgart have 56 points after 26 games. In 2006-07, Stuttgart won the title with 70 points after 34 games.

13 – Struggling Darmstadt have just 13 points this season, just three more than 10, the worst mark of all time set in 1965-66 by one-season wonders Tasmania Berlin.

Borussia Dortmund’s coach and sporting director both praised Jadon Sancho after the England winger’s goal secured a 2-1 win at Werder Bremen on Saturday. The win, which kept Dortmund in fourth place and on course for Champions League football next season, was set up by Sancho’s first goal since returning from Manchester United on loan in January. Sancho dribbled in from the left flank before scoring in a trademark solo effort reminiscent of his peak at Dortmund three years ago.

“Doing something like that, you can of course see what a great footballer he is,” Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl said of Sancho.

The goal put Dortmund 2-0 up, but the visitors lost Marcel Sabitzer to a straight red card shortly after and held on for a half to ensure a 2-1 win.

It was his first goal in eight matches after returning to the side — and his first in Dortmund colours in 1,031 days dating back to May 2021.

Kehl, who played a key role in bringing Sancho back to the club on a loan until the summer, said the 23-year-old was “rewarded” for his hard work.

“You can see how he can make the difference, especially in one-on-one situations.”

Prior to Saturday, Sancho had laid on two assists since returning in January.

“Everyone is happy for Jadon because they saw how hard he was working and how willing he was to help the team.

“Goals help. He’s had one or two assists before, but this goal will help him and give him a boost.”

Sancho had barely played this season after falling out with United manager Erik ten Hag, who would not allow him to train with the first team.

Dortmund coach Edin Terzic, who was in charge as an interim manager when the Black and Yellows won the German Cup in 2021 thanks to two goals from Sancho, praised the winger.

“It’s an example of what he’s capable of and hopefully he can continue like this.

“He’s not limiting himself to scoring a goal — it was his entire performance.

“We know he’s not 100 percent, there’s no way he can be (after a long layoff). But we’ll get him there.”

Kehl compared Sancho’s return to a player returning from injury and said Dortmund would need the winger in Wednesday’s Champions League last 16 second leg at home to PSV Eindhoven.

“You should not forget that he didn’t play for a long time. It’s like when a player has a cruciate ligament injury and is out for a long time.

“We need him and we will again on Wednesday and for the coming weeks.”

Dortmund drew 1-1 in the first leg in the Netherlands and need a win to ensure progression to the quarter finals.

Jadon Sancho‘s Manchester United future was plunged into further doubt on Thursday as the club said the England winger will train on his own due to a “squad discipline issue”. Sancho was dropped for United’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal earlier this month for what United manager Erik ten Hag deemed poor performances in training. The 23-year-old responded by posting on social media that he had been made “a scapegoat for a long time”.

In a statement, United said: “Jadon Sancho will remain on a personal training programme away from the first-team group, pending resolution of a squad discipline issue.”

Sancho was considered one of the brightest young talents in European football when he joined United for £73 million ($91 million) from Borussia Dortmund two years ago.

But he has struggled to live up to that price tag at Old Trafford, scoring just 12 goals in 82 appearances. The former Manchester City youth player was given time off between October and February last season to complete an individual winter fitness programme in the Netherlands.

Ten Hag has proven to be a strict disciplinarian even with some of his biggest stars at Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo‘s second spell at the club was cut short after he criticised the former Ajax manager in a television interview, while Marcus Rashford was benched for a match last season after arriving late to a team meeting.

Sancho’s absence compounds a miserable start to the season for United on and off the field. Ten Hag’s men have lost two of their opening four Premier League games.

United are currently without Brazilian winger Antony after he was given a leave of absence to fight allegations of domestic abuse made by his former girlfriend.

United also received criticism for their handling of Mason Greenwood, who has joined Spanish side Getafe on loan, after agreeing with the player that his career at the club could not continue.

The 21-year-old had faced charges including attempted rape and assault, but prosecutors announced in February this year that the case had been dropped after key witnesses withdrew and new evidence came to light.

Initial reports suggested United were planning to reintroduce the striker to the team before a public outcry sparked the decision to part ways. Meanwhile, protests against United’s owners, the Glazer family, remain a common occurence at home matches as a process for the Americans to sell the club appears to have ground to a halt.
