Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave the orders for a strike in Beirut on Sunday (November 23, 2025) which targeted militant group Hezbollah’s “chief of staff”, his office said.

“A short while ago, in the heart of Beirut, the IDF (Israeli military) attacked the Hezbollah chief of staff, who had been leading the terrorist organisation’s buildup and rearmament,” a brief statement said, adding that Mr. Netanyahu “ordered the attack”.

“Israel is determined to act to achieve its objectives everywhere and at all times.”

The strike, in the south of the capital, comes as Israeli airstrikes over southern Lebanon have intensified in recent weeks.

Israel’s military did not provide any other details on what it called a precise strike, nor has Hezbollah commented on the incident yet. A large plume of smoke can be seen in the busy Haret Hreik neighborhood.

One video widely circulated on social media shows dozens of people crowded around the area of the strike, which appears to be just next to a building.

There was no immediate word about casualties.

Israel and the United States have been piling the pressure on Lebanon to disarm the powerful militant group. The Lebanese military issued a plan the government approved in September that would disarm Hezbollah by the end of the year across the country.

Israel says Hezbollah is trying to rebuild its military capabilities in southern Lebanon, whereas the Lebanese government has denied those claims.

“Hezbollah is playing with fire, and the president of Lebanon is dragging his feet,” Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a statement.

Israel warned on Sunday (November 2, 2025) that its military would step up its attacks against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, a day after the Lebanese Health Ministry reported four people killed in an Israeli air strike.

Despite a November 2024 ceasefire with the Lebanese militant group, Israel maintains troops in five areas in southern Lebanon and has kept up regular strikes.

“Hezbollah is playing with fire, and the president of Lebanon is dragging his feet,” Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a statement.

“The Lebanese government’s commitment to disarm Hezbollah and remove it from southern Lebanon must be implemented. Maximum enforcement will continue and even intensify — we will not allow any threat to the residents of the north.”

Thousands of Israelis living near the northern border with Lebanon were forced to evacuate their homes for months after Hezbollah began firing rockets into Israel following the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023.

That set off a more than year-long conflict that culminated in two months of open war before last year’s ceasefire was agreed.

The Iran-backed militant group, which opposes Israel, has been badly weakened by the war but remains armed and financially resilient.

In September 2024, Israel killed the group’s longtime chief, Hassan Nasrallah, along with many other senior leaders over the course of the war.

Since the ceasefire, the United States has increased pressure on Lebanese authorities to disarm the group, a plan opposed by Hezbollah and its allies.

Ceasefire violation by Israel

Israel never stopped carrying out air strikes on Lebanon in spite of the truce — usually saying it is targeting Hezbollah positions — and has stepped up the attacks in recent days.

On Thursday, Israeli ground troops carried out a deadly raid into southern Lebanon, prompting Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to order the army to confront such incursions.

Mr. Aoun had called for talks with Israel in mid-October, after U.S. President Donald Trump helped broker a ceasefire in Gaza.

But Mr. Aoun later accused Israel of responding to his offer by intensifying its air strikes, the latest of which killed four people in Nabatiyeh district on Saturday (November 1), according to the Lebanese health ministry.

The official Lebanese National News Agency reported that the Israeli army hit a car “with a guided missile”.

The Israeli military confirmed the strike, saying it killed a member of Hezbollah’s Radwan Force in southern Lebanon.

“The terrorist was involved in transferring weapons and in efforts to reestablish Hezbollah’s terrorist infrastructure in southern Lebanon,” the military said, adding three other members of the group were also killed.

“The terrorists’ activities constituted a threat to the State of Israel and its civilians, and a violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon.”

Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem.

Beirut:

Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem on Friday declared a “great victory” against Israel in his first speech since a ceasefire went into effect in Lebanon.

“I have decided to declare… officially and clearly that we are facing a great victory that surpasses that of July 2006,” Qassem said, adding: “We won because we prevented the enemy from destroying Hezbollah… (and) from annihilating or weakening the resistance.”

Over the weekend, Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets at Israel.

New Delhi:
Israel and Hezbollah have threatened to intensify their cross-border attacks, disregarding calls from the international community to de-escalate and step back from a potential all-out war.

Here are 10 points on this big story:

  1. Hezbollah’s deputy chief, Naim Qassem, issued a defiant message that the group has entered “a new phase” in its confrontation with Israel. Qassem made his remarks following Israeli strikes on northern Lebanon that targeted Hezbollah strongholds, resulting in widespread damage and numerous casualties.

  2. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant reiterated Israel’s commitment to ensuring the security of its northern residents, stating, “Military actions will continue until we reach a point where we may ensure the safe return of Israel’s northern communities to their homes.” As both sides harden their stances, Army Chief Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi vowed that Israel would “hit anyone who threatens” its citizens.

  3. The United States, Israel’s biggest ally, has urged restraint. President Joe Biden emphasised that military escalation is not in Israel’s “best interest” and that the US is working tirelessly to prevent a broader conflict. “We’re going to do everything we can to keep a wider war from breaking out,” Biden said.

  4. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres echoed similar concerns, warning of the risk of Lebanon becoming “another Gaza” amid the ongoing Gaza conflict.

  5. Over the weekend, Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets that reached Kiryat Bialik near Haifa, Israel’s largest northern city, damaging infrastructure and igniting fears of further escalation. In retaliation, Israel struck Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, including an airbase and military production facilities. The exchange of fire led Israel’s civil defence agency to order schools in the north to shut down.

  6. Lebanon’s health ministry reported that three people were killed in Israeli strikes on southern areas, while Hezbollah confirmed that two of its fighters were killed. The Israeli army reported that over 150 rockets, missiles, and drones were fired into its territory overnight from Lebanon.

  7. Israel’s recent airstrikes, including an attack on the densely populated Dahiyeh neighbourhood in Beirut, killed Ibrahim Aqil, head of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force.

  8. Hezbollah has signalled that it will not be deterred, with Qassem stating that the group is prepared to face “all military possibilities.” This comes as Israel continues to target Hezbollah’s military infrastructure, attempting to prevent the group from expanding its influence along the Israeli-Lebanese border.

  9. Despite mediation efforts led by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, the conflict shows no sign of abating. Attempts to secure a ceasefire and facilitate hostage release have stalled, with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty indicating that the situation between Israel and Hezbollah is negatively affecting efforts to stabilize Gaza.

  10. The United Nations has described the situation as being “on the brink of an imminent catastrophe.”

The IDF stated that their air raids hit approximately 290 Hezbollah sites.

New Delhi:

  1. On Saturday night, Hezbollah fired at least 10 missiles into northern towns and cities of Israel’s Jezreel Valley, the Times of Israel reported. This was the deepest incursion by Hezbollah rockets into Israeli territory since the conflict began in early October. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intercepted most of the missiles, but one man in his 60s suffered minor injuries from shrapnel.
  2. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the missile barrage and stated that it had aimed at the Ramat David Airbase. Located 50 km from the Lebanon border, the airbase is a key strategic site for the Israeli Air Force.
  3. In response, Israeli jets carried out a series of retaliatory strikes across southern Lebanon. The IDF reported that its airstrikes targeted at least 110 Hezbollah positions, including rocket launchers and operational facilities. The IDF claims it successfully disrupted Hezbollah’s preparations for further rocket launches.
  4. The IDF stated that their Saturday afternoon air raids hit approximately 290 Hezbollah sites, including thousands of rocket launcher barrels, as part of their strategy to dismantle Hezbollah’s rocket-firing capabilities. These preemptive strikes were launched to degrade Hezbollah’s ability to launch large-scale attacks on Israeli territory.
  5. The intensification of Israeli airstrikes follows Hezbollah’s earlier attack on Israeli military targets, including seven positions in northern Israel and the Golan Heights. Israel’s military reported that Hezbollah had fired about 90 rockets at Israeli forces during these engagements.
  6. In addition to military targets, Israel conducted an airstrike on southern Beirut, killing senior Hezbollah commanders. According to Lebanon’s Health Ministry, the strike left 37 people dead. Among those killed were three children and seven women. Hezbollah confirmed that Ibrahim Aqil, the head of its elite Radwan Force, and other high-ranking commanders were among the dead.
  7. Following the loss of its commanders, Hezbollah vowed retaliation. Ahmed Mahmud Wahbi, another high-ranking Hezbollah commander, was also killed in the same Israeli strike. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah condemned the attack, calling it an act of war, and promised retribution against Israel.
  8. The United Nations has expressed concern over the situation, calling for “maximum restraint” from all parties. Germany and other nations have urged an immediate de-escalation. International mediators, particularly from the United States, are working to prevent the Israel-Hezbollah conflict from spiralling into a regional war.
  9. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced an expansion of the country’s war objectives, including the return of northern Israeli residents, who have been forced to evacuate due to Hezbollah’s attacks. Netanyahu said the military’s focus was on dismantling Hezbollah’s ability to pose a threat to Israel’s northern borders, stating that the country’s actions speak for themselves.
  10. Amid the heightened conflict, the US State Department has issued an advisory for American citizens in Lebanon, urging them to leave the country while commercial flights are still available. The US raised its travel advisory for Lebanon in July following another Israeli strike that killed a Hezbollah commander in Beirut.

Israeli military intercepted all the drones that Hezbollah launched, Benjamin Netanyahu said.

Jerusalem:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Sunday’s strikes in Lebanon were “not the final word” in his country’s military campaign against Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.

“We are striking Hezbollah with surprising, crushing blows… This is another step towards changing the situation in the north and safely returning our residents to their homes. And, I repeat, this is not the final word,” Netanyahu told a cabinet meeting.

He said the military destroyed thousands of “short-range rockets, all of which were intended to harm our civilians and forces in the Galilee”.

“Additionally, the IDF (Israeli military) intercepted all the drones that Hezbollah launched at a strategic target in central Israel,” he said, without identifying what the target was.

Israeli media however reported the target Hezbollah aimed to strike was the headquarters of the Israeli Mossad spy agency near Tel Aviv.

Israel launched a pre-emptive strike on Lebanon on Sunday

Doha:

Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on Sunday hailed strikes by Lebanon’s Hezbollah against Israel, calling it a “strong and focused response”.

“We emphasize that this strong and focused response, which struck deep inside the Zionist entity, is a slap in the face” for the Israeli government, Hamas said in a statement after Hezbollah said it launched a large-scale operation using rockets and drones.
