New Delhi:

The Adani Group and the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) have joined hands to serve meals to devotees at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj this year.

The Mahaprasad Seva will be offered for the entire duration of the Maha Kumbh Mela, from January 13 to February 26.

To thank ISKCON for this initiative, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani on Thursday met Guru Prasad Swami, the Chairman of ISKCON Governing Body Commission (GBC).

Speaking about ISKCON’s support in offering the Mahaprasad Seva, Mr Adani said, “Kumbh is a sacred place of seva, where every devotee gets involved in the name of seva to God. It is my good fortune that we are starting the ‘Mahaprasad Seva’ for the devotees at the Maha Kumbh in collaboration with ISKCON.

“With the blessings of Maa Annapurna, free food will be provided to lakhs of devotees. Today, I got the opportunity to meet Guru Prasad Swami ji of ISKCON and I deeply experienced the power of dedication towards seva. In the true sense, seva is the highest form of patriotism. Seva is meditation, seva is prayer and seva is God.”

Guru Prasad Swami, one of the outstanding preachers of the International Krishna Consciousness Society, said, “The Adani Group has always been a shining example of corporate responsibility and social service. What makes Gautam Adani ji outstanding is his humility — he never waits to be called but moves forward to serve selflessly. We are extremely grateful for his contribution. His work inspires us to give back to the society and unite in the service of humanity.”

The Mahaprasad Seva will be offered to 50 lakh devotees and the meals will be prepared in two kitchens in and outside the mela area.

The Mahaprasad will be distributed at 40 places in the Maha Kumbh area and 2,500 volunteers will be involved in this initiative.

Golf carts have been arranged for the differently abled, elderly, and mothers with children. Five lakh copies of Geeta Saar will also be distributed among the devotees.

Dhaka:

Bangladesh’s immigration police on Sunday turned back 54 members of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) who possessed valid travel documents and wanted to cross into India from the Benapole border checkpoint.

Local media reported that the Bangladesh police did not allow them to proceed citing “suspicious travel”. Some even claimed that the total number of Hindus arriving at the border crossing was over 70.

It was reported that the Hindu devotees from various parts of Bangladesh had arrived at the land port along the international border on Saturday, wanting to leave the country through the Benapole-Petrapole crossing.

“We consulted the Special Branch of Police and received instructions from the higher authorities not to permit them,” Benapole Immigration Checkpost Officer-in-Charge (OC) Imtiaz Ahsanul Quader Bhuiya was quoted as saying by the Bangladesh’s Daily Star.

Bhuiya reportedly mentioned that the Bangladeshi authorities did not allow 54 Iskcon devotees to travel to India due to “suspicions regarding their travel purposes”.

However, several members of the group – who were made to wait at the checkpoint since Saturday night – stated that they were travelling to India for religious rituals with valid passports and visas but were still turned back on Sunday with the authorities not giving any clear reason for their action.

“We were going to participate in a religious ceremony in India, but immigration officials stopped us, citing the absence of government permission,” Saurabh Tapandar Cheli, one of the Iskcon members, told local media outlets.

The Integrated Check Post (ICP) in Petrapole on the Indian side was jointly inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina in July 2016.

The minorities in Bangladesh, especially Hindus, have come under a severe attack by Islamist elements in Bangladesh after the formation of the interim government in the country headed by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.

Earlier this week, after the arrest and denial of bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das – a spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote who is also associated with Iskcon Bangladesh – India had spotlighted that there are several documented cases of arson and looting of minorities’ homes and business establishments, as well as theft and vandalism and desecration of deities and temples, reported from Bangladesh.

“It is unfortunate that while the perpetrators of these incidents remain at large, charges should be pressed against a religious leader presenting legitimate demands through peaceful gatherings. We also note with concern the attacks on minorities protesting peacefully against the arrest of Shri Das. We urge Bangladesh authorities to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and all minorities, including their right of freedom of peaceful assembly and expression,” read a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Even as New Delhi remains concerned with the increasing extremist rhetoric and incidents of violence in Bangladesh, several radicals, including Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam – who led the so-called ‘Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’ that eventually resulted in the fall of government headed by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August – continue to orchestrate a disinformation campaign against Hindus and spiritual organisation Iskcon, calling it as an “agent of the Awami League” that should be banned in the country immediately.

After sending Chinmoy Krishna Das to jail, Bangladesh’s Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) had ordered the freezing of his bank account and also of 16 more Hindus who are associated with Iskcon in Bangladesh.

On Thursday, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had strongly condemned the “tortures” inflicted on common people by the interim government in Bangladesh and called for “immediate release” of the Hindu priest.

“A top leader of the Sanatan religious community has been unjustly arrested, he must be released immediately,” said Hasina.

The Bangladesh Awami League (AL) president and daughter of the ‘Father of the Nation’ Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also spotlighted several incidents of persecution of members of minority communities that have been reported from across 52 districts in Bangladesh since her resignation on August 5, this year.

“A temple has been burnt in Chittagong. Previously, mosques, shrines, churches, monasteries and houses of the Ahmadiyya community were attacked, vandalized and looted and set on fire. Religious freedom and security of life and property of people of all communities should be ensured,” she stated.

“After the killing of innumerable Awami League leaders and workers, students and members of the law and order forces, harassment is going on through assaults and arrests. I strongly condemn and protest against these anarchist activities,” Hasina added.

Mr Das said two devotees who had gone to meet jailed monk Chinmaya Das were arrested.

Kolkata:

Two more Hindu priests were arrested in Bangladesh, ISKCON Kolkata spokesperson Radharamn Das claimed on Saturday.

Speaking to PTI, Radharamn Das said, “I have received information that two more ISKCON monks have been arrested by police in Bangladesh.” In a post on X on Friday night, Radharamn Das said, “In the meantime, bad news has come: two devotees who went with prasad for Chinmaya Prabhu were arrested on their way back to the temple, and Chinmaya prabhu’s secretary is also missing. Please pray for them.”

Earlier on Friday, Radharamn had posted, “Another Brahmachari, Sri Shyam Das Prabhu, was arrested by Chattogram Police today.” “Does he look like a terrorist? #FreeISKCONMonks Bangladesh. The arrest of innocent #ISKCON brahmacharis are deeply shocking & disturbing,” Radharamn posted on X on Saturday. His comments comes comes in the backdrop of unconfirmed reports of arrest of three more ISKCON monks, days after the arrest of spiritual leader Chinmay Das.

Chinmaya Das, who also served as a spokesperson for Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, was arrested at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday while en route to Chattogram to attend a rally. He was denied bail and sent to jail on Tuesday by the Chattogram Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Historically, Hindus made up approximately 22 per cent of Bangladesh’s population during the 1971 Liberation War.

The Hindu population, once a substantial demographic in Bangladesh, has experienced a significant decline in recent decades, with the minority community now comprising only around 8 per cent of the country’s total population.

This drop is largely attributed to a combination of socio-political marginalisation, exodus and sporadic violence over the years.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said Chinmoy Krishna Das is “standing up for people’s rights”,

New Delhi:

Spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar today spoke up in support of the Hindu religious leader arrested in Bangladesh, questioning “What kind of justice targets one who stands with the affected people”.

Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a prominent former leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in Bangladesh, was arrested in Dhaka on Monday after protests by the Hindu community in Rangpur, demanding stronger legal protections for minority groups. He has been accused of sedition and was denied bail by a Dhaka court on Tuesday.

Bangladesh has seen widespread political violence and protests over minority rights since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In a video statement today, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said, “The treatment meted out to the minorities of Bangaldesh is extremely painful. It is a religious leader’s duty to stand with the affected people. Human rights are being violated today, and what kind of justice targets a person standing with the affected?”

The priest, he added, is “standing up for people’s rights”,

“He did not use guns, he did not hurt anyone. He is giving courage to people who are fearful and helpless. This is the duty of any religious leader. He is just doing his job. He is protesting peacefully, which is the right of every citizen,” Sri Sri Ravi Shankar added, appealing to Muhammad Yunus, Chief advisor to Bangladesh’s caretaker government to release him.

India has condemned the arrest and urged Bangladeshi authorities to ensure the safety and security of Hindus and other minorities.
In a statement, the foreign ministry said there are documented cases of arson and looting of minorities’ homes and business establishments, as well as theft, vandalism and desecration of deities and temples in Bangladesh.

“It is unfortunate that while the perpetrators of these incidents remain at large, charges should be pressed against a religious leader presenting legitimate demands through peaceful gatherings,” the ministry statement read.

Despite assuring the Odisha government and Puri’s Gajapati Maharaja that it would not hold an untimely Rath Yatra outside India, ISKCON has organised a ‘chariot parade’ in Houston in the United States.

The parade, featuring a replica of Lord Jagannath’s ‘Nandighosa’ chariot without the deities of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, Goddess Subhadra, and Sudarsan Chakra, was held on November 9 as part of ISKCON’s ‘Festival of Bliss’, triggering a strong backlash from devotees and authorities in Odisha.

The incident has drawn criticism from Puri Govardhan Peeth spokesperson Matru Prasad Mishra, who condemned the event as a “conspiracy against our religion” and demanded a ban on the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) in India.

“Though Houston ISKON had given written assurance to Puri Gajapati Maharaja and Odisha government that they will not hold untimely Ratha Yatra, they did it, which is a conspiracy against our religion,” Mr. Mishra said.

Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Sunday (November 10, 2024) said the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration in Puri would make a decision on the matter and the State government would back whatever action it decides to take.

Meanwhile, in a statement uploaded on its website, Houston ISKON chief Saranga Thakur Dasa said the temple had initially planned the chariot parade with the deities.

“However, there was a concern raised by some of our friends in the local community, so we decided to make a slight change of plans,” it said.

For ISKCON, the opportunity to have festival attendees have a darshan of Lord Jagannath is a central feature of the event. For others, however, compliance to ancient tradition and calendars is the priority, it added.

“We understand there is a meeting planned in India next month between ISKCON and Puri officials to discuss these points in detail, and to seek mutual agreement whereby – as much as possible – the traditional calendar as well as the Lord’s desire for people all over the world to have His darshan and participate in His festivals can be honoured,” the statement said.
