The exclusion of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the list of centrally-contracted players was a decision that was solely taken by chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has revealed, asserting that “nobody is indispensable”. Kishan and Iyer were left out after failing to show up for domestic engagements despite a directive from the BCCI. While Kishan went on a long break after the end of the ODI World Cup last year and remained unavailable until the IPL, Iyer eventually did feature in a few matches for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy including the semifinal and the final.

However, Iyer still found himself at the receiving end after it emerged that he had attended a Kolkata Knight Riders’ camp in Mumbai when his domestic side was busy playing a Ranji Trophy fixture.

“You can check the constitution. I am just a convener (of the selection meeting),” he said during a media interaction at the BCCI head office here on Thursday.

“That decision lies with Ajit Agarkar, even when these two players (Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer) who did not play domestic (cricket), the decision to drop them (from the central contracts list) was only his.

“My role is just to implement. And we have got new players (in place), like Sanju (Samson). Nobody is indispensable,” he added.

Shah reiterated the Board’s position that Indian players will have to prioritise domestic cricket.

In the days leading up to the contract snub, Shah had stated before the third Test between India and England in February this year that he would completely back the chief selector’s decision for any action on players who do not comply with the Indian captain and team management’s requirement for participation in domestic cricket.

Shah said he spoke with the players after their exclusion.

“Yes, I had spoken with them. Media had even carried the reports,” he said.

“Even Hardik (Pandya) said if BCCI is considering me for white-ball, then I am ready to play Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Any player will have to play, even if they do not want to, they will have to,” Shah continued.

Talking about high scores in this year’s IPL, Shah said ultimately, it comes down to who is playing well and who, as a player, can sustain performance.

“Whoever plays well in the IPL… like say Ishan Kishan, he finds it difficult to take part with the Indian team but he can play in Mumbai Indians as a player. There he can play in a relaxed manner.

“In Team India, you have to prove yourself, give back to back performances. The one who can handle that can be described as a right player,” he added.

Shah also revealed details of his conversation with Kishan, which took place after Mumbai Indians’ match against Gujarat Titans.

“No, I did not advise him anything. It was just a friendly talk that he should do well and I speak with all players like that,” he said.

While there have been a few media reports mentioning an increase in the match fees for domestic players in the country, Shah said there is no such plan.

“We have increased the pay anyway and also incentivised Test cricket. We had increased the pay by 100 per cent in 2022,” Shah added.

It was yet another forgettable outing for Mumbai Indians at the IPL 2024. Mitchell Starc picked up four wickets as a disciplined bowling performance helped Kolkata Knight Riders seal a 24-run victory over Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League on Friday. Chasing a below-par 170, Mumbai lost wickets at regular intervals to be bowled out for 145 off 18.5 overs at the Wankhede Stadium.

Suryakumar Yadav raised hopes with a 35-ball 56 but his dismissal in the 16th over tilted the scales in favour of Kolkata.  This was Kolkata’s first win at the Wankhede ground in 12 years and seventh from 10 games this season.

Mumbai slumped to ninth position in the 10-team competition after their eighth loss in 11 games.  Kolkata are placed second and well poised to make it to the play-offs.

“Obviously we couldn’t form partnerships and kept losing wickets,” said Mumbai skipper Hardik Pandya.

“There are a lot of questions that will take time to answer. But for now, not much to say.”

Mumbai were off to a shaky start, with Starc flattening the leg-stump of Ishan Kishan (13) and Varun Chakravarthy sending back Naman Dhir (11).

Ishan Kishan’s dismissal saw Rohit Sharma‘s wife Ritika Sajdeh reacting strongly.

The home team got another big jolt when Rohit Sharma, who came in as an impact sub, miscued a shot to be caught off Sunil Narine for 11.

Pandya’s poor run of form continued as he was out for one, much to the disappointment of the strong home crowd.

Yadav hit his third half-century of the season and Tim David chipped in with 24 but Kolkata did well to rein in the five-time champions.

Earlier, Kolkata lost five quick wickets including that of the prolific Phil Salt (five) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (six) after being put in to bat.

Tottering at 57-5, Venkatesh Iyer (70) and impact sub Manish Pandey (42) steadied Kolkata with an 83-run stand and ensured a respectable total on the board.

Iyer, who hit a century at the same ground last season, hit three sixes and six fours in his fighting 52-ball knock.

“It’s an extremely good feeling, because we haven’t won at Wankhede for 12 years,” said Kolkata’s Varun Chakravarthy.

“This is a very special win because we were down and out in the first innings. The way Venkatesh and Manish pulled it back was great.”

Jasprit Bumrah and Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Thushara were the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets each and troubling the batsmen with their line and length on a lively wicket.

The Mumbai Indians vs Lucknow Super Giants match turned into a low-scoring thriller, despite the latter cruising at one stage while chasing a 145-run target set by the former. A flurry of wickets in the middle overs, meant that LSG were 132/5 in 18 overs. Things turned even more interesting as Ayush Badoni was run out on the first ball of the 19th over. However, it was not a clean run out and the decision to give the batter run out was slammed as ‘terrible, weirdest, poor’ by fans and experts.

It all happened when Ayush Badoni was trying for a second run off the first ball by Hardik Pandya. MI wicketkeeper Ishan Ishan Kishan first missed a chance toi hit the stumps but then did it on second attempt. Badoni’s dive was outstretched but whether his bat popped up while reaching the crease was not clear. The third umpire deemed it out. Irfan Pathan slammed the decision.

After restricting Mumbai Indians to paltry 144, Lucknow Super Giants huffed and puffed to victory in a rather dull match of the IPL 2024 so far.

Marcus Stoinis was the star of the day as his all-round performance of 62 with the bat and 1 for 19 with the ball helped LSG register a crucial four-wicket win over MI at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, here on Tuesday.

In the chase of below par score of 145 at the slow wicket, Nuwan Thushara landed an early strike dismissing Arshin Kulkarni for the golden duck. KL Rahul dropped the anchor role as he was 5 off 13 after three overs and already set up to stay there till the end, giving up the responsibility of making a play to the other batters.

Thushara and Gerald Coetzee had given KL Rahul two freebies down leg side and he was unable to connect with either of them. But Coetzee was smoked for 15-runs in the second over courtesy of back-to-back boundaries from Stoinis.

LSG lost skipper Rahul on 28 to a wonderful catch by Mohammad Nabi off Hardik Pandya which pulled Mumbai back in the game as both added 58 off 40 deliveries for the second wicket.

Stoinis was looking good and Deepak Hooda was decent in the four balls he had faced. It was an uphill task for MI as they needed a few wickets to script a turn around on a wicket which looked slightly sluggish.

Stoinis was impressive with another fifty, but LSG stumbled toward the end, taking the game until the last over. The experience of Nicholas Pooran came in handy as the home team successfully went past the finish line with 4 balls to spare.

LSG moved to the third spot in the IPL 2024 points table, leapfrogging CSK while MI are ninth in points table with just 3 wins in 10 matches.

Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan was on Saturday reprimanded and fined 10 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during a match against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

“Kishan committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction,” an IPL statement read.

“For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.” Article 2.2 includes any action(s) outside the course of normal cricket actions, such as hitting or kicking the wickets and any action(s) which deliberately (i.e. intentionally), recklessly or negligently (in either case even if accidental) results in damage to the advertising boards, boundary fences, dressing room doors, mirrors, windows and other fixtures and fittings.

It also includes abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during a match, even though the IPL organisers didn’t clarify Kishan’s offence.

Punjab Kings will square off against Mumbai Indians in the 33rd match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Thursday. Led by stand-in captain Sam Curran, Punjab Kings will aim to return to winning ways after losing their last two matches. With four points from six matches, the Kings are placed seventh in the IPL 2024 standings. Similarly, Mumbai Indians will look to bounce back after succumbing to a 20-run defeat against Chennai Super Kings in their previous outing.

Having registered two wins and four losses, the Hardik Pandya-led Mumbai are languishing eighth in the IPL 2024 standings.

Ahead of another crucial IPL 2024 clash, we look at the predicted XIs of both sides.

PBKS Predicted XI

Atharva Taide

Young Atharva Taide is expected to retain his place in Punjab Kings’ playing XI in the absence of the injured Shikhar Dhawan. Atharva, who replaced Shikhar in their last game, scored 15 off 12 balls and will look to make the most of his opportunity against MI.

Jonny Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow has failed to convert his starts into a big score in IPL 2024. The England cricketer has scored just 96 runs in six matches at an average of 16 but PBKS will be banking on Bairstow to come good and show his true potential with the bat on Thursday.

Sam Curran

England all-rounder Sam Curran will be the stand-in captain in place of Dhawan. Apart from his leadership, PBKS will need Curran to contribute with both bat and ball. Curran has picked up eight wickets and scored 126 runs in six games so far.

Jitesh Sharma

Wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma showed glimpses of returning to form in the last PBKS game. Batting in the middle-order, Jitesh scored 29 off 24 balls to help PBKS post a respectable total and he will be looking to have a bigger impact against MI.

Shashank Singh

Shashank Singh has grabbed the limelight with his impressive batting performances this season. Shashank has already amassed 146 runs in six matches at an average of 73 and a strike rate of 184.81. He will aim to continue his scintillating form.

Liam Livingstone

Flamboyant all-rounder Liam Livingstone has been an integral member of Punjab Kings since 2022. The hard-hitting batter has shown good form in IPL 2024, having scored 104 runs in four games at an average of 52 and a strike rate of 160. He has also bagged one wicket with his off-spin.

Ashutosh Sharma

Ashutosh Sharma has been one of the more consistent performers for PBKS this season. The 25-year-old has slammed 95 runs in three matches at a brilliant strike rate of 197.92 while also maintaining an average of 47.50 and could be a game-changer against MI.

Harpreet Brar

Left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar has been economical for the Kings in IPL 2024. Apart from bowling with an economy of 7.20, Brar has also scalped four wickets in six matches and will look to add to his tally in Mullanpur.

Harshal Patel

Right-arm pacer Harshal Patel has provided key breakthroughs for PBKS in IPL 2024. Bowling in the middle and death overs, Harshal has claimed seven wickets in six matches and will look to restrict the MI batters in their upcoming fixture.

Kagiso Rabada

Kagiso Rabada has been the joint-leading wicket-taker for the Kings this season so far. The South African pacer has already bagged nine wickets in six games at an economy of 7.95. He will aim to provide early breakthroughs against a star-studded MI’s batting line-up.

Arshdeep Singh

Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was expensive against Rajasthan Royals in Punjab’s last game but will look to bounce back after he finished with figures of 1/45 in his 3.5 overs. While Arshdeep has conceded a few runs in the death overs, he has picked up nine wickets – the joint most by a Punjab player along with Rabada.

MI Predicted XI

Rohit Sharma

Former MI captain Rohit Sharma scored his second century in the IPL in his team’s previous outing. Chasing 207 against CSK, Rohit smashed an unbeaten 63-ball 105 at the Wankhede Stadium. While MI failed to chase down the target, they will hope Rohit can continue his form against PBKS.

Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper)

Star wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been MI’s second-highest run-getter this season. Opening the batting, Ishan has amassed 184 runs in six matches at an average of 30.67 and a strike rate of 178.64.

Suryakumar Yadav

The world’s top-ranked T20I batter, Suryakumar Yadav, has been inconsistent for MI this season. The swashbuckling batter has recorded scores of 0, 52, 0 in IPL 2024 so far and MI will need Suryakumar to fire against PBKS to bag two crucial points.

Hardik Pandya (captain)

MI’s newly-appointed captain Hardik Pandya will aim to contribute with both bat and ball on Thursday. The Indian star all-rounder has scored 131 runs and bagged three wickets in six matches so far.

Tilak Varma

Tilak Varma has been an integral member of MI’s playing XI since 2022. The southpaw has already accumulated 174 runs in six matches this season, including a 34-ball 64 against SRH.

Tim David

Hard-hitting Tim David could play a pivotal role against PBKS in Mullanpur. The 28-year-old has scored 128 runs in six games at an average of 42.67 and a strike rate of 156.09.

Romario Shepherd

Romario Shepherd could be a game-changer against a struggling PBKS outfit. While the bowling all-rounder has smashed 55 runs at a strike rate of 305.55 this season, MI will expect more from him on the bowling front as he looks to add to his solitary wicket in IPL 2024.

Mohammad Nabi

Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi adds variety to MI’s bowling department. The former Afghanistan captain bowls right-arm off-spin and can also score quick-fire runs in the lower middle order. Since his IPL debut in 2017, Nabi has picked up 13 wickets and scored 184 runs.

Shreyas Gopal

Shreyas Gopal is another quality inclusion in Mumbai Indians’ playing XI. The right-arm off-spinner dismissed CSK’s star opener Rachin Ravindra in his only over in MI’s last game. Apart from his off-spin, Gopal can also score some valuable runs. In the IPL, the 30-year-old has bagged 49 wickets and scored 180 runs.

Jasprit Bumrah

MI’s bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been the second-leading wicket-taker in IPL 2024. The right-arm pacer has picked 10 wickets in six matches at an impressive economy of 6.08.

Mumbai Indians batter Romario Shepherd slammed 32 runs in the final over to claim a massive record during the IPL 2024 match against Delhi Capitals on Sunday. Shepherd took DC fast bowler Anrich Nortje to the cleaners as he scored two fours and four sixes to register the costliest over of this year’s competition. The West Indies international started the over with a four straight down the ground followed by a six over long-on. The third delivery from Nortje was a straight one but Shepherd shuffled across the stumps and heaved it for another six on the leg-side. A six over sweeper cover and a four through long-on followed with Shepherd finishing the show with a massive hit over wide long-on.

The destructive batting display left the Mumbai Indians dressing room completely stunned with Sachin Tendulkar applauding the effort and skipper Hardik Pandya‘s expressions going viral on social media.

Mumbai Indians posted an imposing 234 for 5 against Delhi Capitals on a placid track.

Former skipper Rohit Sharma provided a blazing start, scoring 49 off 27 balls and added 80 for the opening stand in just 7 overs with Ishan Kishan (42 off 23 balls), while Hardik Pandya (39 off 33 balls) and Tim David (45 not out off 21 balls) also got useful runs at the back-end.

But it was Romario Shepherd, who smashed 39 of 10 balls with 32 coming off the final over from Anrich Nortje (2/65 in 4 overs) that might have taken the target beyond DC’s reach.

Axar Patel (2/35) provided important breakthroughs for DC.

Mumbai Indians star batter Ishan Kishan and spinner Kumar Kartikeya were among the players who wore superhero jumpsuits as punishments. As the team was leaving Mumbai a day after its IPL 2024 match against Rajasthan Royals, the likes of Kishan and Kartikeya were among the four MI players who were punished. It is worth noting that the five-time champions MI punish their players, who are late to team meetings, in this funny way. MI also uploaded a video on social media in which the four players could be seen donning the funny jumpsuits. “Punishment jumpsuits are back,” was the caption of the video.

Boult’s sensational spell of left-arm pace helped restrict hosts Mumbai to 125-9, a total Rajasthan overhauled with 27 balls to spare for their third win of the season in three matches.

Five-time winners Mumbai, who named Hardik Pandya as captain in place of veteran Rohit Sharma, fell to their third loss to stay bottom of the 10-team table.

Pandya had another unforgettable evening after he met with boos at the toss by the home fans, prompting presenter Sanjay Manjrekar to say “behave”.

“Yes, a tough night, we didn’t start the way we wanted to start,” Pandya said after the loss.

Pandya top-scored with 34 for Mumbai but admitted his wicket made them slip.

“I wanted to counter, we were in a decent position to get us around 150-160,” said Pandya. “But my wicket allowed them to get back more into the game, I needed to do a lot more.”

In-form Rajasthan batter Riyan Parag hammered an unbeaten 54 off 39 balls for his second successive fifty as he steered the team to victory with two sixes and a four.

But Rajasthan bowlers ruled with Boult’s lethal opening burst giving way to Yuzvendra Chahal‘s 3 for 11 with his leg-spin.

It was a night to forget for five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians as their wait for a win at the IPL 2024 continued. Facing Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium, in their first home game this season, MI slumped to a six-wicket loss. This is their third straight defeat, thus making their comeback all the harder. Opting to bowl first, Rajasthan Royals stopped Mumbai Indians at 125 for nine and then chased down the target with 27 balls to spare. The in-form Riyan Parag again played very well to remain not out on 54 off 39 balls.

MI were off to a disastrous start as they found themselves tottering at 20 for four in the innings’ fourth over in their season’s first home game. Again subjected to booing by fans, MI skipper Hardik Pandya responded with a 21-ball 34, while Tilak Varma chipped in with 32 in 29 deliveries. Veteran pacer Trent Boult bowled extremely well to finish with 3/22, while leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal ended with excellent figures of 3/11, including picking the big wicket of Pandya when he was looking good for more runs.

The match also saw a scary moment as a fan breached security to run towards Rohit Sharma direction. The former MI captain looked scared. The person then hugged Rohit before shaking hands with Ishan. The security staff then took him away.

Rohit Sharma on Monday equalled the unwanted record for most ducks in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. In the first over of the match between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals at Wankhede Stadium, Rohit edged one to wicketkeeper Sanju Samson in Trent Boult’s over, his 17th duck in IPL history, levelling the dubious record held by Dinesh Karthik. Rohit’s record of 17 ducks is followed by Glenn Maxwell, Piyush Chawla, Mandeep Singh and Sunil Narine, who all got out on ducks 15 times.

Coming to the match, relentless spells from Trent Boult, Nandre Burger and Yuzvendra Chahal ripped apart Mumbai Indians’ (MI) batting order, helping Rajasthan Royals (RR) restrict MI to 125/9 in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 here at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.

Chahal and Boult bowled their heart out against Mumbai, bagging three wickets each, while Nandre Burger returned with two scalps. Captain Hardik Pandya scored the highest for the MI with 34 off 21 deliveries while Tilak Varma played a crucial knock of 32 runs in 29 balls. Rajasthan Royals bowlers absolutely bossed Mumbai batters as Pandya-led Mumbai’s homecoming did not go according to their plan so far as the team posted their lowest total in their IPL.
