Looking to force his way into the Indian team again, Ishan Kishan has begun his comeback journey after going through a tumultuous period or 6 months that saw him lose his place in the team in all three formats, as well as his central contract. Ishan, who hasn’t played for India since December last year, opened up about competition within the Indian team, especially considering the form the likes of Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson have shown of late, earning the selectors’ nod for T20 World Cup 2024. Samson, Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel were preferred over Ishan for the Zimbabwe series too.

In a chat with the Indian Express, Ishan said to be elated to see Pant make his comeback to the national side, and that too in some style. As far as ‘competition’ is concerned, Kishan is ready to challenge others and hope to make a comeback in the team in all three formats.

“It was heartening to see Rishabh back in action. As far as competition goes, you love challenges and when you compete with all the quality cricketers, it enhances your game. And then when you make it you feel like you have earned it. I know it’s not going to be easy. But I feel competition gives you that feeling of satisfaction. I enjoy it. I don’t take any stress about it,” he told the paper.

On his ambitions for the national team, Ishan said that he sees himself in all three formats, as was the case before hi decided to take a break.

“I see myself playing in all three formats. I have done well in T20Is, ODIs and Tests as well. I want to be part of all three formats,” he said.

“Keep myself fit and prepare for upcoming tournaments. I am not thinking too much about the future. I want to stay in the present. At this point in time, I am only focussed on how to become a better and different player from what I was six months ago. I will work on a few innovative shots and on my wicket-keeping. These are the important things, rather than thinking about what happened in the past and what will happen in the future. I am waiting for the domestic season to kick off. I want to do well for Jharkhand and then let’s see,” he added.

After months of criticism and trolling, India vice-captain Hardik Pandya finally found his night of reckoning and glory as he helped India win the T20 World Cup last week in Barbados. Prior to the tournament, Hardik was brutally targetted by fans owing to his poor form in IPL 2024, and also over the fact that he replaced Rohit Sharma as captain of the Mumbai Indians (MI). Under Hardik’s leadership, MI finished the season bottom of the points table.

Some fans were also not happy with Hardik’s inclsuion in the Indian team for the T20 World Cup. However, Hardik was one of India’s match-winners in the final and was influencial for them throughout the tournament.

His performance in the final saw a huge change in behaviour of fans towards him. In fact, a young girl even apologised to him on live television.

Now, out-of-favour India wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan has recalled what Hardik told him when fans were going after him.

“I had a gut feeling that he (Hardik) was saving it all for the World Cup. I will never forget his words: ‘Ek baar performance aa jaaye fir jo aaj gaali de rahe wahi taaliyaan bajayenge (Once I start performing, those who are abusing me will be clapping for me). This is what he told me when I was also going through a really tough time. He said ‘let people talk, we will do our best and give 100 percent to the game we love’,” Kishan told the Indian Express.

Kishan, who lost his central contract and was seen training with Hardik before the IPL, also revealed how the India vice-captain never complained about the fan’s treatment of him.

“It is difficult to explain in words the past six months he has had, as there were all kinds of things said and written about him. But he never lost his cool. I was with him during most of that time – be it training with him in Vadodara or during the IPL – and I never heard him cribbing ki yaar, aisa kyun ho raha hai mere saath (Mate, why is this happening with me). He was calm about it, took it in a very sporting manner, and just focused on the game,” he explained.

“I remember Hardik bhai saying once during the IPL, ‘Jo haath mai nahi hai uske baare mey kya sochna. Log bol rahe hain, kyu bol rahe, wo sab control nahi kar sakte (Those things which are not in our hands, we can’t control. If I keep on thinking about what people are saying, I will lose it). The same bunch that has criticised me will celebrate me in the future and I just have to take it in a very sporting manner,” Kishan added.

Real Reason Revealed” »

India wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan has opened up on him taking a break from international cricket, which led to his ouster from the team. Kishan last played for India during the third T20I of a five-match series against Australia in November last year. He was then named in the subsequent tour of South Africa, but opted out of the Test series due to personal reasons. After taking a short break, Kishan also decided to skip Ranji Trophy matches, which led to the BCCI removing him from the central contracts list.

Rahul Dravid, who was the head coach of India at that time, has suggested that if Kishan wanted to make a comeback, he must feature and perform in domestic matches.

While his decision to skip domestic matches led to severe criticism, Kishan has now revealed that he was not in the right frame of mind to play Ranji Trophy games.

“I took a break and I think it was normal. There is a rule that if you want to make a comeback you must perform in domestic cricket. It is as simple as that. Now, it was very different for me to play domestic cricket as it was not making any sense. I was not in a frame of mind to play and that is why I took a break from international cricket. It doesn’t make sense that you take a break from international cricket and then you go and play domestic matches. Fir toh aap international hi khelte (Then I could have continued playing for India),” Kishan told the Indian Express.

Kishan also admitted that he was disappointed with him not getting enough playing time for the Indian team, despite performing.

“It was depressing. Today I don’t want to say that everything was fine. It was not easy for me at all. You go through a lot. Mere dimag mey ye sab chalta raha ki yaar kya hoga gaya, kyu ho gaya, mere saath kyu (Questions like what happened, why me). All these things happened when I was performing,” he added.

After skipping the South Africa tour and Ranji Trophy, Kishan returned to action during the Indian Premier League earlier this year.

However, he scored just 320 runs from 14 innings at an average of 22.85 and a strike rate of 148.83.

As a result, he was not considered for T20 World Cup selection, with the management picking Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson as the two wicketkeepers.

One of the finest wicket-keeper batters in the Indian team, Ishan Kishan has had a tumultuous time over the past 6 months, which saw him losing his place in the Indian team across all three formats, as well as a place in the BCCI central contract. Ishan sought a break from India’s tour of South Africa in December last year over mental fatigue, and has since not returned to the fold. Though he played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 with the Mumbai Indians, he wasn’t picked for the recent Zimbabwe tour.

In a chat with the Indian Express, Ishan opened up his absence from the Indian team, central contract snub and the plan he has put in place to make his way into the national team.

When asked about the axe from the Indian team and the central contract snub, Ishan said: “I don’t want to be sad about anything. I’ll keep giving my best.”

The wicket-keeper batter admitted that the last few months were depressing, and what happened also mde him wonder why all this was to happen with him.

All these things happened when I was performing,” he said.

Ishan was asked about the reason behind his break, and he revealed that it was mainly travel fatigue but he didn’t feel all was well inside his head. He also said that, sadly, no one else barring his family and a few close friends understood his stance.

“I was scoring runs and then I found myself on the bench. These things do happen in a team sport. But I experienced travel fatigue. It meant there was something wrong, I was not feeling well or right and so I decided to take a break. However, sadly, barring my family and few close people no one understood that.

Fir toh aap international hi khelte (Then I could have continued playing for India),” he asserted.

After celebrating Team India’s T20 World Cup success with fans, the players have reached their respective homes to spend time with their loved ones. While India captain Rohit Sharma reached his home late on Thursday night, star batter Virat Kohli was spotted catching an early flight to London to be with his wife and kids. India vice-captain Hardik Pandya also reached his home, where he had a surprise visitor in young keeper-batter Ishan Kishan. In a viral video, the two shared a warm hug before Kishan kissed Pandya on either side his cheeks.

The moment of their bromance has gone viral on social media. “Good meri jaan. Very good, love you,” Kishan can be heard as saying to Hardik, who was having a laugh about it.

During a recent interaction with PM Narendra Modi, Pandya reflected on the last six months and revealed that he had not lost his temper once when things were going wrong, which was precisely why the victory felt all the more meaningful. Mumbai Indians (MI) supporters and social media trolls had been very harsh to Pandya during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

said that India were calm throughout the game and always believed that they could win. Despite being trolled mercilessly during the Indian Premier League, on a personal and professional level, he produced what may have been the World Cup-winning moment when he removed Heinrich Klaasen.

“The last 6 months have been very entertaining for me, there have been a lot of ups and downs and the public booed me. A lot of things happened and I always felt that if I give any answer, it would be through sports… So I believed that I would stay strong, will work hard,” Hardik Pandya said during an interaction with PM Modi at the Prime Minister’s residence in Delhi.

Kishan, on the other hand, is currently without a BCCI central contract, while also being left out of the T20 World Cup and Zimbabwe T20I squads.

He was dropped from the central contracts list after reportedly refusing to play domestic cricket.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) were forced to make three changes in the Indian squad for the T20I series against Zimbabwe as some of the members were stuck in Barbados. The likes of Yashasvi, Shivam Dube, Sanju Samson, who were all part of the Indian team for the T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, couldn’t fly out sooner from the island nation as a hurricane threat forced the government to shut down all flights. The selectors named Harshit Rana, Jitesh Singh and Sai Sudharsan as replacements for the first two matches.

While Harshit and Sudharsan were rewarded on the basis of an exemplary Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign, Jitesh has been in the mix for a couple of years now. However, their inclusion also posed a big question on certain other Team India stars who were ignored. Among those topping the list, were the likes of Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Varun Chakravarthy, Mayank Yadav, Umran Malik, Yash Dayal etc.

Ishan Kishan’s case remains arguably the most curious one. He was an all-format player for the Indian team until the tour of South Africa where he asked the BCCI for a break. A lot happened in between that series and the T20 World Cup 2024 squad selection that prompted the selectors to keep the Mumbai Indians wicket-keeper batter on the sidelines.

Ishan was reportedly asked to play Ranji Trophy for Jharkhand and a few other domestic events if he is to be considered for selection but he decided to train with Hardik Pandya for the IPL 2024 campaign.

The move from the Mumbai Indians star didn’t seem to have gone well with the BCCI bosses and the selectors who didn’t pick him for the Zimbabwe series, despite Sanju Samson’s unavailability for the first two matches. The pecking order, at present suggests that Ishan isn’t even the 4th choice option in the shortest format. Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Dhruv Jurel, and Jitesh Sharma seem to be ahead of him in the race.

Ishan’s case isn’t an isolated one, similar questions can be asked about players like 7 other players including KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, two Indian veterans, who weren’t picked for the Zimbabwe tour either.

In the bowling unit, the absence of Varun Chakravarthy, Mayank Yadav, Umran Malik, Yash Dayal etc also poses some big questions while many feel that an all-rounder like Venkatesh Iyer could also have been considered.

India’s squad for T20Is vs Zimbabwe: Shubman Gill (Captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Nitish Reddy, Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, Tushar Deshpande.

Changes for first two T20Is: Harhit Rana, Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma

Former India batter Aakash Chopra feels star batter Rohit Sharma and young wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan might not play for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). There has been an uncertainity over Rohit’s future at MI ever since he was relieved of his captaincy duties by franchise. MI appointed Hardik as captain for IPL 2024 but the five-time champions endured a disastrous season, finishing at the bottom of the 10-team points table. Sharing his views on MI’s possible strategy for IPL 2025 mega auction, Chopra suggested that Rohit might’ve played his last game for the franchise.

He also added that keeper-batter Kishan might be released by the team due to his price tag. However, he suggested that MI might use the ‘Right to Match’ card on Kishan if needed.

“I think they will let Ishan Kishan go. They might use the ‘Right to Match’ card because 15.5 crores is just too much money. I don’t think Ishan will be retained,” the ex India cricketer said on his YouTube channel.

“I think Rohit Sharma has played his last match for the Mumbai Indians, whether he doesn’t want to be retained or the franchise lets him go,” he added.

“Either way, I see them parting ways. I don’t think you will be seeing Rohit Sharma in the Mumbai Indians jersey again. That’s just my understanding. I might be wrong but I feel, either which way, Rohit Sharma will not be playing for the Mumbai Indians when you start the next season,” he further explained.

The next assignment for Rohit will be to lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. India will face Ireland in their tournament opener on June 5.

Hardik’s inclusion in the squad was a matter of discussion among experts but the selectors decided to show trust in the all-rounder as he was appointed the vice-captain.

The exclusion of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the list of centrally-contracted players was a decision that was solely taken by chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has revealed, asserting that “nobody is indispensable”. Kishan and Iyer were left out after failing to show up for domestic engagements despite a directive from the BCCI. While Kishan went on a long break after the end of the ODI World Cup last year and remained unavailable until the IPL, Iyer eventually did feature in a few matches for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy including the semifinal and the final.

However, Iyer still found himself at the receiving end after it emerged that he had attended a Kolkata Knight Riders’ camp in Mumbai when his domestic side was busy playing a Ranji Trophy fixture.

“You can check the constitution. I am just a convener (of the selection meeting),” he said during a media interaction at the BCCI head office here on Thursday.

“That decision lies with Ajit Agarkar, even when these two players (Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer) who did not play domestic (cricket), the decision to drop them (from the central contracts list) was only his.

“My role is just to implement. And we have got new players (in place), like Sanju (Samson). Nobody is indispensable,” he added.

Shah reiterated the Board’s position that Indian players will have to prioritise domestic cricket.

In the days leading up to the contract snub, Shah had stated before the third Test between India and England in February this year that he would completely back the chief selector’s decision for any action on players who do not comply with the Indian captain and team management’s requirement for participation in domestic cricket.

Shah said he spoke with the players after their exclusion.

“Yes, I had spoken with them. Media had even carried the reports,” he said.

“Even Hardik (Pandya) said if BCCI is considering me for white-ball, then I am ready to play Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Any player will have to play, even if they do not want to, they will have to,” Shah continued.

Talking about high scores in this year’s IPL, Shah said ultimately, it comes down to who is playing well and who, as a player, can sustain performance.

“Whoever plays well in the IPL… like say Ishan Kishan, he finds it difficult to take part with the Indian team but he can play in Mumbai Indians as a player. There he can play in a relaxed manner.

“In Team India, you have to prove yourself, give back to back performances. The one who can handle that can be described as a right player,” he added.

Shah also revealed details of his conversation with Kishan, which took place after Mumbai Indians’ match against Gujarat Titans.

“No, I did not advise him anything. It was just a friendly talk that he should do well and I speak with all players like that,” he said.

While there have been a few media reports mentioning an increase in the match fees for domestic players in the country, Shah said there is no such plan.

“We have increased the pay anyway and also incentivised Test cricket. We had increased the pay by 100 per cent in 2022,” Shah added.

It was yet another forgettable outing for Mumbai Indians at the IPL 2024. Mitchell Starc picked up four wickets as a disciplined bowling performance helped Kolkata Knight Riders seal a 24-run victory over Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League on Friday. Chasing a below-par 170, Mumbai lost wickets at regular intervals to be bowled out for 145 off 18.5 overs at the Wankhede Stadium.

Suryakumar Yadav raised hopes with a 35-ball 56 but his dismissal in the 16th over tilted the scales in favour of Kolkata.  This was Kolkata’s first win at the Wankhede ground in 12 years and seventh from 10 games this season.

Mumbai slumped to ninth position in the 10-team competition after their eighth loss in 11 games.  Kolkata are placed second and well poised to make it to the play-offs.

“Obviously we couldn’t form partnerships and kept losing wickets,” said Mumbai skipper Hardik Pandya.

“There are a lot of questions that will take time to answer. But for now, not much to say.”

Mumbai were off to a shaky start, with Starc flattening the leg-stump of Ishan Kishan (13) and Varun Chakravarthy sending back Naman Dhir (11).

Ishan Kishan’s dismissal saw Rohit Sharma‘s wife Ritika Sajdeh reacting strongly.

The home team got another big jolt when Rohit Sharma, who came in as an impact sub, miscued a shot to be caught off Sunil Narine for 11.

Pandya’s poor run of form continued as he was out for one, much to the disappointment of the strong home crowd.

Yadav hit his third half-century of the season and Tim David chipped in with 24 but Kolkata did well to rein in the five-time champions.

Earlier, Kolkata lost five quick wickets including that of the prolific Phil Salt (five) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (six) after being put in to bat.

Tottering at 57-5, Venkatesh Iyer (70) and impact sub Manish Pandey (42) steadied Kolkata with an 83-run stand and ensured a respectable total on the board.

Iyer, who hit a century at the same ground last season, hit three sixes and six fours in his fighting 52-ball knock.

“It’s an extremely good feeling, because we haven’t won at Wankhede for 12 years,” said Kolkata’s Varun Chakravarthy.

“This is a very special win because we were down and out in the first innings. The way Venkatesh and Manish pulled it back was great.”

Jasprit Bumrah and Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Thushara were the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets each and troubling the batsmen with their line and length on a lively wicket.

The Mumbai Indians vs Lucknow Super Giants match turned into a low-scoring thriller, despite the latter cruising at one stage while chasing a 145-run target set by the former. A flurry of wickets in the middle overs, meant that LSG were 132/5 in 18 overs. Things turned even more interesting as Ayush Badoni was run out on the first ball of the 19th over. However, it was not a clean run out and the decision to give the batter run out was slammed as ‘terrible, weirdest, poor’ by fans and experts.

It all happened when Ayush Badoni was trying for a second run off the first ball by Hardik Pandya. MI wicketkeeper Ishan Ishan Kishan first missed a chance toi hit the stumps but then did it on second attempt. Badoni’s dive was outstretched but whether his bat popped up while reaching the crease was not clear. The third umpire deemed it out. Irfan Pathan slammed the decision.

After restricting Mumbai Indians to paltry 144, Lucknow Super Giants huffed and puffed to victory in a rather dull match of the IPL 2024 so far.

Marcus Stoinis was the star of the day as his all-round performance of 62 with the bat and 1 for 19 with the ball helped LSG register a crucial four-wicket win over MI at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, here on Tuesday.

In the chase of below par score of 145 at the slow wicket, Nuwan Thushara landed an early strike dismissing Arshin Kulkarni for the golden duck. KL Rahul dropped the anchor role as he was 5 off 13 after three overs and already set up to stay there till the end, giving up the responsibility of making a play to the other batters.

Thushara and Gerald Coetzee had given KL Rahul two freebies down leg side and he was unable to connect with either of them. But Coetzee was smoked for 15-runs in the second over courtesy of back-to-back boundaries from Stoinis.

LSG lost skipper Rahul on 28 to a wonderful catch by Mohammad Nabi off Hardik Pandya which pulled Mumbai back in the game as both added 58 off 40 deliveries for the second wicket.

Stoinis was looking good and Deepak Hooda was decent in the four balls he had faced. It was an uphill task for MI as they needed a few wickets to script a turn around on a wicket which looked slightly sluggish.

Stoinis was impressive with another fifty, but LSG stumbled toward the end, taking the game until the last over. The experience of Nicholas Pooran came in handy as the home team successfully went past the finish line with 4 balls to spare.

LSG moved to the third spot in the IPL 2024 points table, leapfrogging CSK while MI are ninth in points table with just 3 wins in 10 matches.
