All the 10 Indian Premier League franchises have announced their retentions ahead of the 2025 auction. Among the biggest highlights of the deadline day, three major captains Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have been released by their franchises Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively. As the trio enter the auction pool, there are some other star players too who will be in focus of the franchises in the bidding war. Let’s have a look at five players who could fetch massive amount at IPL 2025 auction –

1.) KL Rahul: Wicketkeeper-batters are expected to get great attention this auction. Rahul has been a consistent performer and also holds captaincy experience in IPL. These add to his already illustrious portfolio.

2.) Rishabh Pant: He has been one of the most explosive batters, not only in IPL but also in world cricket. Add the leadership abilities and some quality wickeeping skills and Pant becomes a rare commodity.

3.) Ishan Kishan: The southpaw is just another explosive wicketkeeper-batter, who is expected to attract a lot of bidders during the IPL 2025 auction. Kishan is a proven performer in IPL as well as the international stage.

4.) Shreyas Iyer: The title-winning captain, who has been released by KKR, would also be in the minds of franchises like Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bangaluru and Delhi Capitals. Given that Iyer led KKR to the title in IPL 2024, his stakes must have reached an all-time high.

5.) Arshdeep Singh: A left-arm pacer of his quality is expected to get a lot of interest from bidders. Quality left-arm pacers already have high stake even in international cricket not only in IPL. The fact that Arshdeep is an Indian pacer will help him become the cynosure of all eyes at the auction.

Ishan Kishan has made a remarkable return to red-ball cricket. He is playing for Jharkhand against Madhya Pradesh in the ongoing Buchi Babu tournament in Tamil Nadu. On his first day of action, the star was quite impressive with his glovework behind the stumps as Madhya Pradesh won the toss and opted to bat first. On the second day, Kishan boasted of his batting skills. The southpaw slammed his century in 86 balls. He got there with two consecutive sixes.

Watch it here:

Kishan, who was not part of Jharkhand’s original long list, took the decision to participate, and he was drafted in when he communicated this to the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA), according to an ESPNcricinfo report.

The report further stated that Kishan’s return to the Ranji Trophy fold is also expected during the 2024-25 season, after he informed the state selectors of his desire to return.

His last domestic first-class game was in December 2022. He stayed away from the Ranji Trophy towards the end of the 2023-24 domestic season, and this proved costly for him, as he was removed from the central contract list for not prioritising domestic cricket.

“With Ishan, it was never about ability. It was only about whether he was ready to return. The decision was with him. When he was not included in the initial list, it was only because we hadn’t heard from him. The moment he expressed his keenness to return, he was drafted in,” a JSCA functionary was quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

The 26-year-old made his Test debut during India’s West Indies tour in 2023, filling in for an injured Rishabh Pant. His last first-class game was the second Test of that tour. Though selected for the South Africa series, he opted out due to mental fatigue.

Kishan has featured in two Tests, 17 ODIs and 11 T20Is in 2023. He was also part of India’s squad during their run to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, and featured in two matches at the top of the order when Shubman Gill was out ill.

Buchi Babu tournament, which was revived last year after a gap of six years, is being conducted in the four-day red-ball format, akin to the procedure followed in league stages of Ranji Trophy.

It then serves as vital preparation for the 12 participating teams ahead of the upcoming 2024/25 domestic season.

Shreyas Iyer, the IPL-winning skipper of the KKR team of which Gambhir was the mentor, made a deserving national comeback after a rap on the knuckles from the selection committee for repeatedly avoiding domestic cricket last season. The batter had attributed it to his dodgy lower back. Iyer wasn’t technically dropped from ODIs as he had scored a fifty in the last ODI that India played but now that he is back in the mix, he will get his central contract back automatically. But the same can’t be said about Ishan Kishan, who is believed to be nowhere on the selection radar.

If sources are to be believed, he will only be back in reckoning after a full season of domestic cricket, and playing IPL to IPL is harming his cause. Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Sanju Samson are the first three designated keepers in two white-ball formats.

Riyan and Harshit called in for ODIs

The BCCI media statement stated that the Board “will continue to monitor player availability and participation in the upcoming domestic cricket season, 2024-25.” Assam’s Riyan Parag has reaped benefits for his stupendous performance in last year’s Vijay Hazare National one-dayers where he scored seven half-centuries. It has been learnt that the national selection committee will give full importance to domestic cricket performances.

Rookie pacer Harshit Rana, who had 19 wickets for KKR in this year’s IPL and was selected for the first two Zimbabwe T20Is, has been included in the ODI squad as it is believed that the selectors think it is the best time to broaden their pool of pacers and check how they fare at the elite level.

Abhishek Sharma, who scored a 46-ball-hundred, missed out as there is no place for him at No. 3 where the skipper himself will bat. Similarly, Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad also didn’t find a place.

Amid Ishan Kishan Saga, Sunil Gavaskar Suggests BCCI To “Double, Triple” Ranji Trophy Fees https://artifex.news/amid-ishan-kishan-saga-sunil-gavaskar-suggests-bcci-to-double-triple-ranji-trophy-fees-5246243/ Sat, 16 Mar 2024 12:29:23 +0000 https://artifex.news/amid-ishan-kishan-saga-sunil-gavaskar-suggests-bcci-to-double-triple-ranji-trophy-fees-5246243/ Read More “Amid Ishan Kishan Saga, Sunil Gavaskar Suggests BCCI To “Double, Triple” Ranji Trophy Fees” »

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar on Friday urged the BCCI to bring in the recently-launched incentive system for Tests into domestic cricket, saying it would encourage more players to participate and have lesser pull outs. The BCCI announced its incentive policy right after the conclusion of the five-Test series against England while also naming its list of players who have been given contracts for the period of October 2023 to September 2024. As per the announcement, those who play 75 per cent of India’s Tests both home and away could earn Rs 60 lakh per match.

“I think what Rahul Dravid said, when it was announced in Dharamsala, that he would like to call it a reward,” Gavaskar told the media on the sidelines an event to mark the completion of 25 years of The Champs Foundation.

“That is a wonderful thing by the BCCI to reward those who would be playing but I would also request the BCCI to ensure that the feeder to the Test team, which is the Ranji Trophy, that is also looked after.

“(If) the Ranji Trophy fees can be doubled or tripled, certainly there’ll be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy, (and a) lot less pull outs from the Ranji Trophy, because if the fees of playing a Ranji Trophy match is a good fee there will be less people pulling out for various reasons.

“They will all be wanting to play with the slab system — every 10 first-class matches you get that much more, so I would request the BCCI to look at that aspect as well.”

The legendary batter welcomed the recent emphasis shown by the Indian cricket board to have more frontline players participating in domestic cricket.

“It is something that everybody is aware of. It is something that should be looked up by every cricketer — domestic cricket is actually how they have come up. If they hadn’t started at the domestic cricket level, be it the domestic T20, the domestic one-day tournament or the Ranji Trophy, they wouldn’t be where they are,” Gavaskar said.

“Very few cricketers (are there) who’ve actually come up from not having played domestic cricket, they always have played some domestic cricket, it could be junior cricket or U-19 cricket or something like that. That has to be something that every cricketer must never forget.”

Gavaskar also urged the BCCI to have a look at the scheduling of the Ranji Trophy, which ran from a little over two months from January 5 to March 14 this year.

More importantly, the scheduling which had three-day breaks between most games was tough to deal with for the players.

It is something which India all-rounder Shardul Thakur and Tamil Nadu skipper R Sai Kishore also talked about, warning that players across the countries will start getting injured if the schedule is not changed.

“That’s (a relook at the schedule) something that should be considered because you have to have a situation… In the three-day gap what happens is that there’s probably a day in between in travel,” Gavaskar said.

“During travel, there’s no time to go to the physio and maybe take his help to get fit from a niggle. So, probably there should be a little bit of gap so that the player get adequate time,” he added.

Gavaskar said Ranji Trophy should be played from October to mid December followed by the white-ball competitions.

“That way, everybody will be available to play except for the ones featuring for India. There will be no real excuse to pull out. With the one-dayers beginning from January, people who are in the IPL can have enough practice from then.”

Gavaskar also said Test cricket will continue to survive.

“Test cricket will definitely be around. You might not have a five-Test match series between every country, only two or three might play five-Tests. Any tour now will be a mix of Tests, T20Is and ODIs,” he said.

After all-rounder Hardik Pandya was ruled out of the game with an ankle injury, another Indian player Suryakumar Yadav was injured during the nets session ahead of India’s ICC Cricket World Cup clash against New Zealand at Dharamshala on Sunday. India will lock horns against New Zealand at Dharamshala on Sunday. Both teams are undefeated in the tournament, having won four matches each and having eight points. New Zealand is at the top due to a better net run rate. Notably, India has not beaten the Kiwis at any ICC tournament since 2003.

During the nets, Suryakumar was hit on his wrist while facing a throwdown specialist during his practice. Surya was in heavy pain and had to leave the session.

This year, Suryakumar has played 14 ODIs, scoring 283 runs in 13 innings at an average of 23.58 with two fifties and best score of 72*. He has scored runs at a strike rate of over 113. Due to his hitting skills and 360-degree shots, he is viewed as an X-Factor for Men in Blue. With Hardik Pandya out due to an ankle injury, a spot was potentially left open for him to grab as a lower middle-order finisher.

Also, Ishan Kishan was stung by a honey bee at the back of his neck while practising and had to be rushed out of the practice. However, he is okay.

In 17 ODIs this year, Ishan has scored 456 runs at an average of 35.07 and a strike rate of over 93. He has hit four fifties in 15 matches, with the best score of 82.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav.

New Zealand squad: Kane Williamson (c), Trent Boult, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitch Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Will Young.
