Iran should not use the Strait of Hormuz, which it has blocked since the start of the West Asia war, as a means to blackmail Gulf states, Qatar’s top diplomat and premier said on Tuesday (May 12, 2026).

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani was speaking during a press conference in Doha with Turkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan — close allies who have emerged as key intermediaries in the Iran-U.S. talks alongside mediator Pakistan.

“Iran should not use this strait as a weapon to pressure or to blackmail the Gulf countries,” the Qatari Minister said.

Mr. Fidan also said the strait must not be “used as a weapon”, according to an Arabic translation of his Turkish comments.

Gulf countries have borne the brunt of Iran’s attacks during the war, with Tehran targeting U.S. assets but also civilian infrastructure, airports and energy facilities.

Its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas usually passes, has also halted crucial maritime exports for the energy-rich Gulf, straining their economies.

Highlighting Qatar’s growing role in peace talks, Sheikh Mohammed said a visit he made to the United States in recent days sought to bolster mediation efforts to end the war.

“The visit focused primarily on supporting the Pakistani diplomatic efforts and ensuring a positive response to these efforts to reach a solution as quickly as possible,” he said.

Ankara has been in close contact with Qatar and other Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait, “particularly regarding the ongoing negotiations”, Mr. Fidan said.

Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium must be “taken out” before the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran can be considered over, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told an American broadcaster yesterday.

“It’s not over, because there’s still nuclear material — enriched uranium — that has to be taken out of Iran. There are still enrichment sites that have to be dismantled,” Mr. Netanyahu said in an interview that aired yesterday on the CBS News program “60 Minutes.”

“You go in and you take it out,” the Israeli leader said when asked how the uranium could be removed.

Mr. Netanyahu said U.S. President Donald Trump had a similar position.

Saudi Arabia, Russia and five other OPEC+ countries increased their oil production quota on Sunday (May 3, 2026) in an expected move aimed at demonstrating continuity at the cartel after the shock withdrawal of the United Arab Emirates.

The seven major producers will add “188,000 barrels per day” to their total production quota for June, as part of “their collective commitment to support oil market stability,” according to a statement published by OPEC+. The statement made no mention of the United Arab Emirates, which quit the body this week.

The crucial Strait of Hormuz will not reopen until the United States lifts its naval blockade on Iranian ports, Tehran said Saturday, as a top official warned that a final peace deal remained “far” off.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of the Iranian parliament, said in a televised address that there has been “progress” in talks with Washington “but there are many gaps and some fundamental points remain.”

“We are still far from the final discussion,” said Mr. Ghalibaf, one of Tehran’s negotiators in the talks aimed at ending the war launched by Israel and the United States against the Islamic Republic.

Facing a looming U.S. deadline, Iran’s President said Tuesday (April 7, 2026) that 14 million Iranians, including himself, have volunteered to sacrifice their lives in the war.

President Masoud Pezeshkian made the comment on X just ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s deadline to bomb power stations and bridges in Iran if it doesn’t loosen its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz.

The figure is double other figures mentioned by state media in the past about volunteers the government had been soliciting by text messages and media as the war went on.

Iran is home to 90 million people. Many remain angry at the government over its bloody crackdown on nationwide demonstrations and the 14 million figure likely is aimed at trying to dissuade the promised American bombing campaign.

“More than 14 million Iranian people have declared their readiness to sacrifice their lives in the [self-sacrificing] campaign,” Pezeshkian wrote. “I too have been, am, and will remain ready to give my life for Iran.”
