Iran considers as “terrorist groups” the armies of EU countries ‍that listed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on the bloc’s list of terrorist organisations, the Speaker of the Iranian ‌parliament said on Sunday (February 1, 2026).

The European Union marked a symbolic shift in its approach to Iran’s leadership on Thursday (January 29) by designating the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organisation, following what turned out to be the Islamic Republic’s bloodiest crackdown of protests since its establishment in 1979.

“By trying to hit the Revolutionary Guards… the Europeans actually shot themselves in the foot and once again made a decision against the interests of their people by blindly obeying the Americans,” the Speaker, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, told his fellow lawmakers, who all wore Revolutionary Guards uniforms in support of the elite force.

“According to Article 7 of the law on countermeasures against the designation of the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organisation, ‌the armies of European countries are considered terrorist ‌groups.”

Mr. Qalibaf said the national security parliamentary commission would deliberate on the expulsion of EU countries’ ‍military attaches and follow up on the issue with the Foreign Ministry.

Lawmakers shouted “Death to America, Shame on you Europe” after ‍the speaker had finished his address.

The Revolutionary Guards issued a statement on Sunday (February 1) saying that the EU’s decision complicated “the path to constructive interaction and cooperation” while strengthening “confrontational approaches”.

Set up after Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution to protect the Shi’ite clerical ruling system, the Revolutionary Guards wield great sway in the country, controlling swathes of the economy and armed forces.

The EU’s move comes as the United States builds up its naval presence in the Middle East after President Donald Trump repeatedly threatened Iran if it did not agree to a nuclear deal or failed to stop killing protesters.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Sunday (February 1) that if the U.S. attacked Iran it would become a regional conflict, state media reported.

The Commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on Thursday (January 22, 2026) warned Israel and the U.S. against “miscalculations” in the wake of mass protests, saying the force had its “finger on the trigger”.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly left open the option of new military action against the Islamic Republic after Washington backed and joined Israel’s 12-day war in June.

A fortnight of protests starting in late December shook the clerical leadership under supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but the movement has petered out in the face of a crackdown that activists say has left thousands dead.

Guards Commander General Mohammad Pakpour warned Israel and the United States “to avoid any miscalculations, by learning from historical experiences and what they learned in the 12-day imposed war, so that they do not face a more painful and regrettable fate”.

“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and dear Iran have their finger on the trigger, more prepared than ever, ready to carry out the orders and measures of the supreme Commander-in-Chief — a leader dearer than their own lives,” he said, referring to Mr. Khamenei.

His comments came in a written statement quoted by state television marking the national day in Iran to celebrate the Guards, a force whose mission is to protect the 1979 Islamic revolution from internal and external threats.

Activists accuse the Guards of playing a frontline role in the deadly crackdown on protests. The group is sanctioned as a terrorist entity by countries including Australia, Canada and the United States, and campaigners have long urged similar moves from the EU and UK.

Mr. Pakpour took over as Guards Commander last year after his predecessor Hossein Salami was one of several key military figures killed in an Israeli strike during the 12-day war, losses which revealed Israel’s deep intelligence penetration of the Islamic republic.

Giving their first official toll from the protests, Iranian authorities on Wednesday (January 21, 2026) said 3,117 people were killed.

The statement from the Islamic Republic’s Foundation for Martyrs and Veterans sought to draw a distinction between “martyrs”, who it said were members of security forces and innocent bystanders, and what it described as “rioters” backed by the U.S..

Of its toll of 3,117, it said 2,427 people were martyrs.

However, rights groups say the heavy toll was caused by security forces firing directly on protesters and that the actual number of those killed could be far higher and even extend to over 20,000.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said “the future for the Iranian people can only be in a regime change”, adding that “the Ayatollah regime is in quite a fragile situation”.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards threatened to carry out “crushing attacks” against regional foe Israel if it retaliated for a missile attack under way on Tuesday.

“If the Zionist regime reacts to Iranian operations, it will face crushing attacks,” the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement carried by the Fars news agency.

On Tuesday evening, Iran launched a missile attack targeting Israel’s commercial hub Tel Aviv, state media reported.

The United States had spoken of an imminent Iranian ballistic missile attack against Israel and warned it would have “severe” consequences for Tehran.

Iranian media carried online footage of what they said were missiles being launched against Israel.

State television played joyful songs over the footage and its anchor congratulated “the brave Iranian people”.

Tuesday’s attack was Iran’s second on Israel after a a missile and drone attack in April in retaliation for a deadly Israeli air strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.

Nearly all the munitions fired in that attack were intercepted by Israel or its allies.

An Israeli strike on Beirut on Friday killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, whose Lebanese militant group has been armed and financed by the Islamic republic for years.

Nasrallah was killed alongside General Abbas Nilforoushan, a top commander of the Quds Force, the Guards’ foreign operations arm.

Iran vowed Nilforoushan’s killing “will not go unanswered”.

At the UN General Assembly in New York last month, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused Israel of warmongering while Iran had exercised restraint.

He suggested Iran had held back retaliation for the killing of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July, fearing it could derail US-backed efforts for a Gaza ceasefire.

“We tried to not respond. They kept telling us we were within reach of peace, perhaps in a week or so,” he said.

On Sunday, Pezeshkian said promises by the US and its allies of a “ceasefire in exchange for Iran’s non-reaction to Haniyeh’s killing were completely false”.

He added that “giving these criminals (Israel) a chance would only encourage them to commit more crimes.”

“Senior officials of Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad have held talks with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah about achieving “real victory” in their war with Israel,” the Lebanese group said on October 25.

The Hezbollah statement did not specify when or where Nasrallah met with Hamas number two Saleh al-Aruri and Islamic Jihad leader Ziad Nakhaleh beyong saying that it was at a undisclosed location in Lebanon.

News of the meeting comes as Hezbollah and allied Palestinian factions exchange daily fire with the Israeli Army across the Lebanon-Israel border, raising fears of a new front in Israel’s war with Hamas in Gaza.

The three groups are part of the “axis of resistance” — Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian and other Iran-backed armed groups opposed to Israel.

They discussed what “the axis of resistance must do at this critical stage to achieve real victory… in Gaza and Palestine and stop” Israel’s “brutal aggression”, the statement said.

They also discussed “recent events in the Gaza Strip since the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood” — the unprecedented October 7 Hamas attack that killed more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, in Israel.

The Health Ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza says 5,791 people have been killed, again mostly civilians, as Israel has bombarded the territory. Hassan Nasrallah and the Palestinian militant leaders “agreed to keep coordinating and daily following up on developments,” the statement added.

Hezbollah and Hamas have long been part of a “joint operations room” with the Quds Force — the foreign operations arm of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards — a source close to Hezbollah previously told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“The meeting also touched upon the cross-border fire on the Lebanon-Israel border,” the statement said.

At least 52 people have been killed in Lebanon according to an AFP tally, mostly Hezbollah combatants but also four civilians, including Reuters journalist Issam Abdallah. Four people have been killed in Israel, including one civilian.
