Iran fires missiles at Israel after Trump threatens weeks of strikes

Israel said it came under Iranian missile fire on Thursday (April 2, 2026) after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to bomb the Islamic republic into the “Stone Ages” with heavy strikes in the next two to three weeks.

In a speech from the White House, Mr. Trumpsought to reassure war-weary Americans that the military campaign that began on February 28 was coming to an end, vowing “extremely hard” strikes against Iran.

“Thanks to the progress we’ve made, I can say tonight that we are on track to complete all of America’s military objectives shortly, very shortly,” Mr. Trumpsaid.

The war’s “core strategic objectives are nearing completion”, he said, warning however that “over the next two to three weeks, we are going to bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong”.

His address came as Britain was set to host a meeting onThursday (April 2, 2026) with about 35 countries on how to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz that Iran has effectively blocked without a deal to end the war.

The U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran that started the war killed senior officials in the Islamic republic’s military forces and government, including supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose son has since replaced him.

Mr. Trump, whose approval rating is sinking over the war, indicated that talks may be possible with Iran’s new leadership, which he described as “less radical and much more reasonable” than its predecessor.

He warned that if no agreement with Tehran was struck, Washington had “our eyes on key targets including the country’s electric generating plants”.

Despite Mr. Trump’sthreats, Israel’s military said Iran twice fired missiles at the country after his address, part of four barrages detected within six hours on Thursday (April 2, 2026).

Iran has dismissed Washington’s ceasefire overtures, describing U.S. demands to end the conflict as “maximalist and irrational”.

“Messages have been received through intermediaries, including Pakistan, but there is no direct negotiation with the US,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, quoted by the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) on Thursday (April 2, 2026).

Pro-government Iranians in the capital Tehran were also defiant at the funeral of a Revolutionary Guards naval commander who was killed in an Israeli strike.

“This war has lasted a month. However long it takes, we will continue,” said Moussa Nowruzi, a 57-year-old pensioner. “We will resist until the end.”

Gulf protection

Mr. Trump also assured regional allies Israel and Gulf nations that Washington would protect them from Iranian retaliatory fire, as more attacks were reported across the region on Thursday (April 2, 2026).

He addressed Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain — battered by Iranian drone and missile attacks — that the United States “will not let them get hurt or fail in any way, shape or form”.

As Israel prepared for the Passover holiday, which began at sunset on Wednesday (April 1, 2026), air raid sirens sounded repeatedly in the Tel Aviv area.

On Thursday (April 2, 2026), the United Arab Emirates said its air defences were again responding to missile and drone “threats”.

The Revolutionary Guards also confirmed hitting an oil tanker in the Gulf they said belonged to Israel. A British maritime security agency said the vessel was struck off Qatar, reporting damage but no casualties.

In Lebanon, militant group Hezbollah said its fighters launched drones and rockets at northern Israel on Thursday (April 2, 2026), with the Israeli military’s Home Front Command saying air raid sirens were activated across the border.

A day earlier, Israel killed a top Hezbollah commander, two sources toldAFP, in a Beirut strike that the Lebanese health ministry said killed seven people.

Authorities in Lebanon say Israeli attacks have killed more than 1,300 people in the country since war erupted between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah on March 2.

Hormuz ‘courage’

Hours before Mr. Trump’saddress, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian asked the American people whether the conflict was truly putting “America First”, accusing Washington of war crimes and of being influenced by Israel.

Mr. Trump had claimed earlier Wednesday (April 1, 2026) that Iran’s president had sought a ceasefire, but said the Islamic republic must first reopen the Strait of Hormuz — which he said in his address would happen “naturally” once the conflict ended.

In his speech he called for countries that receive oil through the Strait of Hormuz to show “courage” and seize the key waterway.

On Thursday (April 2, 2026), the British-led virtual meeting of dozens of nations will “assess all viable diplomatic and political measures that we can take to restore freedom of navigation” in the strait, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

But Mr. Trump’sremarks did little to calm energy markets rocked by the waterway’s de facto closure, with oil prices surging Thursday (April 2, 2026). Brent jumped more than 4% to more than $105, while West Texas Intermediate climbed 3%to hit around $103.

One-fifth of global oil normally passes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards vowed on Wednesday (April 2, 2026) to keep it shut to the country’s “enemies”.

After a wave of anti-government demonstrations that crested in Iran in January over economic grievances, some Iranians still privately long for political change, particularly after Mr. Trump himself had promised to come to their aid.

“He betrayed the Iranians,” said one woman in her 30s, requesting anonymity for security reasons. Sounding resigned, she added she no longer expects a change of government, but “if they could grant us more freedoms, we could live with that”.

Iran fired a salvo of ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday in retaliation for Israel’s campaign against Tehran’s Hezbollah allies in Lebanon.

Alarms sounded across Israel and explosions could be heard in Jerusalem and the Jordan River Valley after Israelis piled into bomb shelters. Reporters on state television lay flat on the ground during live broadcasts.

Reuters journalists saw missiles intercepted in the airspace of neighbouring Jordan. Israeli military said Iran fired around 180 missiles. “IDF (Israeli Army) systems have identified approximately 180 missiles fired towards Israeli territory from Iran,” it said.

Earlier, the military had announced that any ballistic missile strike from Iran was expected to be widespread and told the public to shelter in safe rooms in the event of an attack.

Iran has vowed to retaliate following attacks that killed the top leadership of its Hezbollah allies in Lebanon. The firing of missiles came after Israel said its troops had launched ground raids into Lebanon, though it described the forays as limited.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards threatened to carry out “crushing attacks” against Israel if it retaliated for the missile attack.

“If the Zionist regime reacts to Iranian operations, it will face crushing attacks,” the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement carried by the Fars news agency.

The IRGC said the attack was “in accordance with the United Nations Charter”.

It said it came “after a period of restraint” following an “attack on the sovereignty” of Iran — a reference to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in late July.

After the attack, Iran suspended flights at Tehran international airport, Iranian media reported late Tuesday.

“For the time being, we have suspended incoming and outgoing flights at Tehran International Airport,” the ISNA news agency quoted airport chief Said Chalandari as saying.

Hamas praised Iran’s missile attack as “heroic”.

“The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) blesses the heroic rocket launches carried out by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in Iran against wide areas of our occupied lands,” a statement said, adding it was “in revenge for the blood of our heroic martyr”.

In Washington, U.S. President Joe Biden said the U.S. was prepared to help Israel defend itself from Iranian missile attacks. “We discussed how the United States is prepared to help Israel defend against these attacks, and protect American personnel in the region,” Mr. Biden said on X about a meeting held with Vice President Kamala Harris and the White House national security team earlier in the day.

Iran has fired missiles at Israel and all civilians in the country are in bomb shelters, the Israeli military said on Tuesday. The attack comes amid Israel’s ground offensive in Lebanon to target Hezbollah and days after the militant outfit’s commander Hassan Nasrallah and a top official from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were killed in Israel strikes in Beirut.

The Israeli foreign ministry also cited the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) and said at 10.08 pm IST that the missiles were fired a “short while ago”. Confirming the attack, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said it was in response to the killing of Nasrallah, Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh and its own senior commander Abbas Nilforoushan. Reuters quoted Israeli media as saying that as many as 100 missiles had been launched.

Videos showed debris from missiles intercepted by Israel’s famed Iron Dome and Arrow defence systems raining down on Tel Aviv. The Israeli defence forces also confirmed that blasts had been heard in “Jerusalem and elsewhere”. There have been no reports of any casualties so far.

“Iran’s attack is continuing. You are requested to remain in a protected space until further notice. The explosions you are hearing are from interceptions or fallen projectiles,” the army said in a statement to Israelis, a report by news agency AFP said.

“A short while ago, missiles were launched from Iran towards the State of Israel. Israelis are instructed to remain alert and precisely follow the Home Front Command’s instructions,” the Israeli foreign ministry’s handle said in a post on X.

“In the last few minutes, the Home Front Command has distributed life-saving instructions in various areas across the country. The IDF is doing and will do everything necessary to protect the civilians of the State of Israel,” it said.

The news of the missiles being launched came shortly after reports of a suspected “terror” shooting in Israel’s commercial capital Tel Aviv. Police in the city said at least four people were killed.
