The advisory urges users to update their Apple devices to the latest versions of software.

Days after Apple launched its highly anticipated iPhone 16 series, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a high-risk warning concerning multiple vulnerabilities found in several Apple products. The advisory, issued on September 19, affects a wide range of Apple software versions, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and visionOS.

Affected Products

CERT-In’s advisory outlines the affected Apple products as follows:

  • iOS: Versions prior to 18 and 17.7
  • iPadOS: Versions prior to 18 and 17.7
  • macOS Sonoma: Versions prior to 14.7
  • macOS Ventura: Versions prior to 13.7
  • macOS Sequoia: Versions prior to 15
  • tvOS: Versions prior to 18
  • watchOS: Versions prior to 11
  • Safari: Versions prior to 18
  • Xcode: Versions prior to 16
  • visionOS: Versions prior to 2

Key Risks and Impacts

The vulnerabilities are rated as “high” risk and, if exploited, could allow attackers to:

  • Gain unauthorised access to sensitive information
  • Execute arbitrary code on the device
  • Bypass critical security restrictions
  • Cause denial-of-service (DoS) conditions
  • Elevate privileges to gain control over the system
  • Perform spoofing attacks
  • Engage in cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks

Potential Impacts by Product

  • iOS and iPadOS: Users with iOS versions prior to 18 or 17.7 could face DoS attacks, information disclosure, and security restriction bypassing.
  • macOS (Sonoma, Ventura, Sequoia): Users running older versions of macOS may experience data manipulation, DoS, privilege elevation, and cross-site scripting.
  • tvOS and watchOS: These products face similar risks of DoS attacks, XSS vulnerabilities, and information disclosure.
  • Safari and Xcode: Older versions could be vulnerable to spoofing and security restriction bypassing.
  • visionOS: Users may be at risk of data manipulation, DoS and information disclosure.

CERT-In Recommendations

The advisory urges users to update their Apple devices to the latest versions of software to mitigate the risks. Users are also advised to monitor their devices for any unusual activity and ensure proper cybersecurity measures are in place.

Apple has 6 per cent share by volume and 16 per cent by value in India.

New Delhi:

Apple has seen a surge in pre-orders for its ‘Make in India’ iPhone 16 in the country, as the company gears up to make its latest iPhone line-up available on September 20, trade analysts said on Thursday, adding that the new devices are set to break previous export records.

The ongoing channel checks suggest that iPhone 16 Pro models are also witnessing a strong traction from buyers, owing to its more strategic and accessible pricing, in comparison to the 15 series.

The new iPhones will be available at Apple retail and online stores in India — Apple BKC (Mumbai) and Apple Saket (New Delhi) – along with the company’s authorised sellers, from September 20.

According to Counterpoint Research Director Tarun Pathak, there is a strong pre-order demand for the base iPhone 16 model compared to last year, and with attractive financing options, “the new 16 series is set to break previous records”.

The analysts expect a healthy mix of upgrades this year for Apple in the country. The momentum is great with the government’s thrust on local manufacturing as the iPhone 16 models are being manufactured/assembled in India with simultaneous availability along with global market.

Prabhu Ram, VP-Industry Research Group, CyberMedia Research (CMR), told IANS that Apple is benefiting from the strong tailwinds rising from the premiumisation wave in the Indian smartphone market.

“The older generation iPhone 14 and 13 series will also gain traction in the festive season,” he added.

Apple’s latest iPhone 16 is being produced and launched globally from the Indian factories. Driven by the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, the tech giant reached around $5 billion in iPhone exports from India in the April-August period this fiscal (FY25).

As per industry data, this is a growth of over 50 per cent from the same period of first five months in FY24.

The iPhone 16 Pro series benefits from more strategic and accessible pricing compared to its previous generation. This is expected to drive upgrades in the Indian market, making it more appealing to a wider range of consumers.

Globally, iPhone 16 series first-weekend pre-order sales are estimated at about 37 million units, as per industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Meanwhile, Apple revenues in India are likely to grow 18 per cent (year-on-year) in 2024 and the new iPhone 16 series would help the company further solidify its presence in the country, along with boosting its exports figures.

Apple has 6 per cent share by volume and 16 per cent by value in India. The double-digit growth will continue, with revenues expected to cross the $10 billion mark in 2025 in the country.

The iPhone production in India has gone up from less than 1 per cent in 2017 to 10 per cent in 2023 and plans are to scale it up to 25 per cent of global shipments by 2025, according to global investment firm Jefferies.

The iPhone 16 lineup was launched at Apple’s ‘It’s Glowtime’ event on Monday.

New Delhi:

Noting that Apple’s latest iPhone 16 is being produced and has been launched globally from Indian factories, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday said that ‘Make in India’ initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is driving the creation of iconic products for the world.

Apple on Monday announced iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, built for Apple Intelligence, “the easy-to-use personal intelligence system that understands personal context to deliver intelligence that is helpful and relevant while protecting user privacy”.

This is the first time Apple has assembled its iPhone 16 Pro models outside China, highlighting a major shift in the tech giant’s global production strategy.

“Apple’s latest iPhone 16 being produced and launched globally from Indian factories! PM @narendramodi Ji’s ‘Make in India’ initiative is now driving the creation of iconic products for the world,” Vaishnaw said in a post on X.

The move underscores Apple’s strategic efforts to diversify its manufacturing base and enhance its global supply chain resilience.

According to GSM Arena, Apple’s decision to assemble its iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models in India reflects a broader trend of companies seeking to reduce their dependence on single countries for production.

For the past seven years, Apple has been progressively ramping up its production in India. This expansion is expected to elevate India’s share in Apple’s total iPhone production from approximately 14 per cent earlier this year to 25 per cent by next year.

In addition to the iPhone 16 Pro, there are reports indicating that Apple plans to begin production of the iPhone 17 exclusively in India.

By diversifying its production strategy, Apple aims to mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on any single country, particularly in light of geopolitical shifts and supply chain uncertainties.

Here are some products tech behemoth Apple launched at the event:

NEW IPHONE LINEUP

The iPhone 16, starting at $799, comes in two sizes — 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches. The phones are powered by the new A18 chips, which feature a 16-core neural engine designed for generative AI-linked tasks and Apple Intelligence.
