Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag slammed a question asked by the media to Rohit Sharma, ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final against England in Guyana. After India’s win over Australia in the Super 8 stage, Pakistan legend Inzamam-ul-Haq had raised suspicion over possible ball tampering by India. The reason behind his doubt was that Arshdeep Singh was able to create reverse as early as the 15th over. While Rohit Sharma denied any wrongdoing, former India vice-captain Sehwag criticised such questions being asked to the players.

“It is not the job of a reporter to quote someone and ask others for their opinion,” said Sehwag, speaking on Cricbuzz.

“This is wrong. Do you not have a question of your own?” said Sehwag.

Sehwag said that such questions are of no help to the players, and are only useful in stirring controversies.

“You’re trying to create controversy. If I were there, I wouldn’t have replied at all,” said Sehwag.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma had completely denied any ball tampering from India, instead suggesting that it is important for critics to be “open-minded”.

“You are playing in the heat, the wicket is dry, the ball reverses automatically. It happens for all the teams. It’s important to open your mind,” said a disappointed Rohit, in response to the allegation by Inzamam.

India have been in tremendous form at the 2024 T20 World Cup, and are yet to lose a game. Supporters and fans would be hoping that the end result does not turn out like the 2023 ODI World Cup Final.

Rohit Sharma returned to his explosive best against Australia, smashing 92 off just 41 balls.

India take on England at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, where rain is expected to be 90%. In the case of a washed out match, India will qualify for the final on June 29, by virtue of finishing higher in the Super 8.

South Africa are awaiting the winner of the India-England clash.

Former Pakistan cricket team skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq courted controversy when he accused India fast bowler Arshdeep Singh of “ball tampering” during the T20 World Cup 2024. Following India’s win over Australia in the Super 8, Inzamam said that Arshdeep was getting reverse swing due to some ‘serious work on the ball’. In response, India captain Rohit Sharma rubbished any such accusation and even asked the critics to “open their minds”. Inzamam has now retorted to Rohit’s statement and cautioned him to not teach reverse-swing provided it was Pakistan who gave it to world cricket.

“Dimag to hum zarur apna khole lenge (We will definitely open our mind).” Inzamam said on 24 News.

“First thing is that he (Rohit) has admitted that it’s happening. So it means what we observed is correct. Second thing, Rohit Sharma ko humein batane ki zarurat nahi padni chahiye ke reverse swing kis tarah hota hai, kitni dhoop mei hota hai, kis pitch pe hota hai. Jo sikhane wale hain unko nahi yeh cheez sikhaya karte (there is no need for Rohit to tell us how reverse swing happens, under how much sun, on what pitch; you don’t teach something to someone who actually taught it to the world). Tell him it’s not right to talk these things,” the former Pakistan cricket team captain added.

Earlier, Rohit had a clear answer when asked about Inzamam’s allegations on Arshdeep.

Abhi kya jawab du iska mein bhai (what answer should I give, brother). Wickets are so dry (here) as you are playing in a sunny weather. All teams are getting reverse (swing). Sometimes dimaag ko kholna zaroori hai (Need to open your mind). You need to understand what the conditions are. This is not Australia or England. That’s what I will say,” Rohit said, when asked to respond.

Meanwhile, India reached the T20 World Cup 2024 final after comprehensively defeating England.

Ahead of the India vs England T20 World Cup semi-final, a very strong accusation from Pakistan great Inzamam ul Haq went viral. On his target was Indian cricket team pace bowler Arshdeep Singh and the former Pakistan captain claimed that Arshdeep Singh was getting reverse swing due to some ‘serious work’ on the ball. Indirectly, he meant that Arshdeep was unfairly tampering the ball, which is a punishable offence by the ICC.

Speaking to a Pakistani news channel, Inzamam accused Arshdeep and the Indian side of working on the ball, which helped the lanky pacer generate a reverse swing in his second spell.

“When Arshdeep was bowling the 15th over, it was reverse swinging. Is that too early with the new ball? This means the ball was ready by the 12th-13th over, it was capable of reversing. It was reverse-swinging in the 15th. Umpires need to keep their eyes open,” Inzamam told the news channel.

Inzamam further stated that, “If Pakistan bowlers did this, there would have been hue and cry. We know how to reverse it really well. If Arshdeep can reverse it in the 15th, there’s been some serious work done on the ball.

“If Bumrah does it (you can understand), his action is like that. When others with a specific action or speed do it, it means the ball has been prepared in a special way,” added Inzamam.

Rohit was asked about Inzamam’s comment in the pre-match media interaction here and he dismissed it, advising the former batter to have an open mind.

That’s what I will say,” Rohit said, when asked to respond to Inzamam’s observation.

India defeated 2021 T20 World Cup champions Australia by 24 runs in Gros Islet on Monday to set up a semifinal clash against England with left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh grabbing three wickets to halt the Kangaroos’ charge in the chase of 205.

India scored 205 batting first and then restricted Australia to 181/7.

Australia were in the game and required 81 runs in eight overs with eight wickets in hand. But they lost the plot during Arshdeep’s second spell, which fetched him two wickets in the 16th and 18th overs.

Former Pakistan captains Inzamam-ul-Haq and Saleem Malik have accused India pacer Arshdeep Singh and the team of altering the conditions of the ball during their T20 World Cup Super 9 match against Australia. Inzamam said that India must have tampered the ball in the middle overs to help Arshdeep in getting reverse swing from the new ball. Inzamam and Malik also slammed the umpires for not staying alert to the situation, with the latter even suggesting that the officials do favour certain teams, adding that India are one of them.

Inzamam pointed out that getting reverse swing with the new ball is difficult, unless the condition is altered.

“When Arshdeep Singh was bowling the 15th over, there was reverse swing. With the new ball, it is too early. This means that the ball was tampered around the 12th or 13th over to get reverse swing. So, the umpires should keep their eyes open,” Inzamam said during a discussion on 24 News.

“There is a saying that the umpires keep their eyes closed for some teams, and India are one of them. I remeber getting fined for reporting a similar situation during a game against Pakistan,” Malik pointed out.

Inzamam also suggested that the umpires would have taken extremeif there was a Pakistan player in that situation.

“If this was the case with the Pakistan bowlers, there would have been a lot of discussion on the same. If Arshdeep’s ball is reversing in the 15th over, it is evident that something was done to the ball,” Inzamam added.

Meanwhile, Arshdeep leads the wicket-taking charts for India in the ongoing tournament. With figures of 3 for 37, Arshdeep also climbed to the second spot in the tournament’s wicket-takers chart with 15 wickets in six games with Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi sitting on top with 16 wickets in seven games.

After the match, Arshdeep gave credit to Jasprit Bumrah for his brilliant bowling throughout the tournament.

“I guess a lot of credit goes to Jassi bhai (Jasprit Bumrah) because he puts a lot of pressure on the batters – he gives, what, three or four runs in an over – so batters are coming hard against me, and I just have to try and bowl my best ball and there are a lot of chances of getting wickets there,” he said.

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has opened up on the team’s elimination from the T20 World Cup. Pakistan failed to get out of the group stage after losing to USA and India, respectively. India and USA secured their place in the Super 8 stage from Group A, finishing first and second with seven and five points, respectively. With Pakistan failing to get out of the group stage for the first time in T20 World Cup, Inzamam hinted at changes in the side, and admitted that the team is on a decline.

Inzamam pointed out how Pakistan have managed to perform better than other sides in T20s, but their performances have not been up to the mark of late.

“Our cricket in declining. I am not saying this because of the loss against USA. We also lost to Ireland (before the World Cup). We lost to New Zealand’s third string side at home and also the England. Prior to this, our performances in T20 format has been better than others. But our cricket has been on a downward trajectory of late. I am not saying that we should sack some players and get new ones, but the PCB needs to have dialogue on the reason behind such a decline,” Inzamam said on his YouTube channel.

Pakistan’s elimination was confirmed on Friday when USA joined arch-rivals India as the second team from Group A in the Super Eight round, following a washout in Florida.

Pakistan cricketers face the risk of having their central contracts reviewed and their salaries potentially reduced by the PCB following their early exit from the T20 World Cup.

According to a report, the board said that some officials and former players had advised PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi to reassess the central contracts given to the players during his predecessor Zaka Ashraf’s tenure.

Pakistan opened their campaign with a Super Over upset against co-hosts USA before facing a close six-run loss against arch-rivals India. However, they defeated Canada by seven wickets but it was too late for Babar and Co. to make their case for the second round. In the last group stage fixture, Pakistan will take on Ireland in Florida on Sunday.

Shaheen Afridi criticises by Inzamam-ul-Haq© X (Twitter)

Shaheen Afridi has been a busy man in the Pakistan Super League, becoming a constant topic of chatter among fans and experts. His decision to promote himself up the order hasn’t been well received by some former cricketers and even the legendary Inzamam-ul-Haq had a critical analysis of the southpaw despite him scoring 55 runs off 34 balls for Lahore Qalandars against Quetta Gladiators. Afridi stitched a 91-run partnership with Abdullah Shafique for the 4th wicket, but his team went on to lose the match.

“This partnership between Abdullah Shafique and Shaheen Afridi… if you look at the scorecard, then it looks very impressive, scoring 55 off 34 balls and the other scoring 59 off 39 balls. But the scorecard doesn’t do justice to it. They played all the overs – almost 14 – and all you could take the total to was 167, whereas it should have been 200-plus. Did anyone feel that Lahore will be able to win from here? Or will Lahore defend it?” asked a miffed Inzamam on Suno News.

With Abdullah in the middle since the powerplay and Shaheen from the 10th over, Inzamam feels the duo should’ve scored runs at a much-faster rate. A total of 166 for the loss of just 4 wickets isn’t justifiable, as far as the former Pakistan captain is concerned.

Inzamam further said that had specialist T20 batters like Sikandar Raza and David Wiese played as many deliveries as Shaheen and Shafique did, the score would’ve been much higher.

“Shaheen coming in to bat at No. 5 but scoring at that pace is not good for the team. Had specialists like David Wiese and Sikandar Raza faced 34 balls, the score could have been better. He should’ve put pressure on Abdullah Shafique too, asking him “bhai… tu tez khel (boss, score faster). If a batter is playing from the first over to the last, and score 60 runs, it isn’t acceptable. They need to take care of one big fact. If you start getting into individual efforts, the team’s cause will go for a toss,” asserted Inzamam.

Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has criticised the country’s cricket board for removing Muhammed Hafeez as Team Director due to recent poor results, asserting that it is unfair to “target” ex-players in administrative roles when officials are refusing to shoulder any responsibility for the side’s performance. The PCB had last month parted ways with Hafeez after a 0-3 Test defeat in Australia followed by a 1-4 T20 International series loss to New Zealand. Hafeez’s contract, initially short-term, concluded after the T20 series in New Zealand, following the sports ministry’s recommendation against a long-term agreement.

“Can someone explain the reasoning behind removing Muhammad Hafeez as team director but retaining Wahab Riaz as chief selector after the Australian and New Zealand tours?” Inzamam said on a TV show.

“Weren’t both appointed at same time and given same responsibilities so why has only Hafeez been held accountable and not Wahab Riaz?” he asked.

The former cricket great, who resigned as chief selector in acrimonious circumstances during last year’s World Cup, also urged the PCB to start respecting players.

“The PCB Chairman no doubt is a highly respectable position but don’t former captains and stalwarts deserve the same amount of respect from the top board officials,” said Inzamam.

Inzamam alleged that during his dispute with the Board over conflict of interest allegations, he was shown no respect by former PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf.

“We had a meeting scheduled at the PCB offices after this story about me having a conflict of interest as chief selector broke out.

“I was sitting with (PCB officials) Salman Naseer and Aliya Rasheed waiting for the chairman to come,” he recalled.

“But he went to the academy and from there called Naseer and Aliya to meet him and I was told to wait as he would not be seeing me. Only Aliya returned after a time and told me about the inquiry committee,” he added.

Inzamam said the Ashraf’s attitude was hurtful.

“I was hurt by this behaviour from the Chairman. Every detail of agents and their companies who work with players are available with ICC and PCB and it was not such a big deal and I told them I would resign and they can complete their inquiry,” Inzamam stated.

The former skipper said he was still waiting for the PCB to release findings of the inquiry committee which probed into his conflict of interest case.

“Pakistan cricket cannot be run in this manner. It is time the board officials also accepted responsibility for their actions,” he asserted.

Inzamam also said he never wanted to take over as chief selector before the Asia Cup last year as the previous selection committee had already picked the squad.

Former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has stepped down as Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) chief selector on Sunday after allegations of a conflict of interest.

His resignation comes after Pakistani media reported one of his co-directors in a U.K.-based company, Yazoo International Ltd, is managing director of Saya Corporation, an agency representing some major Pakistani cricketers.

The players include captain Babar Azam, bowler Shaheen Afridi and wicketkeeper and batter Mohammad Rizwan, who is also a director at Yazoo, according to U.K. public sector database gov.uk.

“I am stepping down from the post to offer the PCB the opportunity to conduct a transparent inquiry,” Inzamam said in a statement released by the board. “If the committee finds me not guilty, I will resume my role as the chief selector.”

The PCB said it had set up a five-member fact-finding committee to look into the allegations.

The allegations surfaced in the middle of Pakistan’s struggling World Cup campaign, where they sit seventh in the points table after four successive defeats. It is their worst losing streak in tournament history.

Inzamam-ul-Haq has resigned from the post of Pakistan cricket team chief selector over potential ‘conflict of interest’. The resignation came amid Pakistan’s disappointing show in the Cricket World Cup 2023 where they have won just two out their six matches and are most likely to be eliminated in the group stage. According to a Geo News report, Inzamam is a shareholder in “Yazo International Limited.” The company by owned by several cricketers’ agent Talha Rehmani. The company represents multiple cricketers like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Afridi. The ongoing dispute over the player salaries have resulted in major controversy over Inzamam’s involvement and that may have ultimately led to his resignation from the position.

According to another report in Dawn, Haq “said he went to the PCB after the allegations and asked the board to hold an inquiry.:

“People speak without research. Questions were raised on me so I decided that it was better I resign,” Inzamam said in a statement according to Geo News.

“People are making statements without research. I told the PCB to do their research. I have no relation with the player-agent company,” he clarified.

Inzamam served as the chief selector from August 2016 until July 2019 and he was reinstated ahead of Asia Cup 2023. “I told the board that if they had any doubts, they should investigate it.”

The PCB has also set up a five-member fact-finding committee to investigate allegations in respect of conflict of interest reported in the media.

Meanwhile, Pakistan coach Grant Bradburn on Monday shrugged off claims his players haven’t been paid for five months, insisting the squad was determined to rescue their faltering World Cup campaign.

Pakistan are on the verge of a group stage exit at the tournament and need to defeat Bangladesh on Tuesday to preserve any slim hopes of making the semi-finals.

As well as four defeats in six games so far, Pakistan’s World Cup journey has been plagued by arguments over pay and delays in agreements over central contracts.

On Monday, three players in the squad confirmed to AFP that they had not been paid.

“In terms of the noise around the team, look, playing for Pakistan and working within this team is a huge privilege,” said Bradburn on Monday.

“To prepare ourselves and give our best are the things that we focus on, the things within our control and there are great expectations and we’re desperate to make our nation proud.”

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said that contracts have been sent to India and the players have signed. That should pave the way for payments to be organised, the PCB claimed.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam finds himself in a never-seen-before situation, facing criticism from virtually every Pakistan fan, former cricketer, or expert. Since Pakistan’s unexpected defeat against Afghanistan, the entire cricketing fraternity back home has turned against Babar, criticising his leadership skills. Shahid Afridi, one of the greats of the game, has ripped into Babar for his captaincy style that has failed to get the best out of the team. Afridi urged Babar to lead by example if he is to turn things around in the coming games of the World Cup.

Sharing examples from his own days as an active cricketer, Afridi said: “When you are not in the game [not focused], then these things [fielding issues] will happen. When you are trying to hide somewhere, when you are not thinking positively, I think that at times we are waiting for miracles, miracles don’t just happen. They happen with brave men who know how to fight,” Afridi said while talking Samaa TV.

“Look, a captain is everything. If a captain gives his best, dives during the field, backs other players between overs, the entire team will get [more] active, because when they see that the captain is giving his all and we are not, they feel ashamed that my captain is doing so much, why can’t I be the same?”

“It has happened in the past, when I was the captain or Mohammad Yousuf was, when we used to run in the ground and support players, then the entire team used to charge up. When Inzamam would dive during the field, then, believe me, we players used to feel ashamed that why are we not diving when the captain is. At the end of the day, everything comes right back to the captain.”

Afridi cited the examples of other teams like Australia who refused to go easy on opponents, no matter the situation. He urged Babar to always think about applying pressure irrespective of the likely outcome of the match.

“It is the captain’s job to apply pressure, a pacer is bowling and there is no slip? Four are required on 12 balls and you’ve taken backward point? Apply pressure. What do the Australians do? They take one to two wickets and then put all of their players in the circle to apply pressure, like they did against Pakistan.

“Captaining your national side is a matter of honour but it is not a bed of roses. When you do good, everyone praises you and when you don’t, everyone blames you as well as the head coach,” Afridi added.
