In China, around 400 people, including diplomats, academics, yoga practitioners and members of the Indian diaspora, participated in celebrations organised by the Consulate General of India in Shanghai at the Bund Finance Centre.

Addressing the gathering, Consul General Pratik Mathur described yoga as India’s gift to the world and underscored its growing role in promoting holistic health, mental well-being and active ageing, according to a statement issued by the consulate.

Mr. Mathur said that yoga transcends national boundaries and continues to inspire millions globally to embrace healthier and more balanced lifestyles.

The programme featured a guided meditation session, a Manipuri dance performance, an Indian classical music recital and a demonstration on the benefits of yoga.

“A comprehensive yoga session incorporating breathing techniques, asanas, and meditation was conducted for participants, emphasising the importance of regular practice in maintaining physical fitness, mental resilience, and overall wellness, particularly in advancing age,” the statement said.

In the U.S., hundreds of participants gathered at the iconic Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC for a yoga session organised by the Embassy of India.

“The Embassy of India marked #IDY2026 in Washington D.C. under the theme ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’ — a reminder that yoga is for everyone, at every stage of life,” the Indian mission said in a post on X.

The Indian Embassy in Washington also hosted a series of events at venues including Dupont Circle and the World Bank with local communities, besides setting up an Ayurveda corner showcasing traditional wellness practices.

In Saudi Arabia, nearly 500 participants, including government officials, diplomats, school children and Indian community members, attended an International Day of Yoga event in Riyadh.

The session was led by Saudi women yoga instructors Sima Ghannam and Malak Almughira, the Indian Embassy in Riyadh said in an X post.

“The growing popularity of yoga in Saudi Arabia marks yet another milestone in India–Saudi Arabia cultural ties,” it said.

In Japan, more than 2,100 yoga enthusiasts joined celebrations organised by the Indian Embassy at the historic Tsukiji Hongan-ji Temple in Tokyo.

“Despite the rain, with the motto ‘Yoga together, rain or shine!’, the venue was filled with energy and smiles,” the Indian Embassy in Tokyo said in a post on X.

In Canada, the Consulate General of India in Toronto marked the International Day of Yoga with a large gathering against the backdrop of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario.

Around 800 participants, including government representatives, members of the diplomatic corps, yoga practitioners, wellness organisations, and community leaders, took part in the celebrations, the Consulate General of India in Toronto said in a social media post.

Addressing the gathering, Consul General Mahavir Singhvi highlighted yoga’s ability to transcend cultural, linguistic and national boundaries, bringing people together in a “shared pursuit of well-being and reaffirming its timeless relevance as a universal path to health, harmony, and inner balance”.

“Celebrating this year’s theme — ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, a beautifully synchronised yoga session served as a powerful celebration of community, connection, and collective well-being,” the post said.

In Nepal, the Embassy of India, in collaboration with the Lumbini Development Trust, organised a yoga demonstration near the Eternal Peace Flame and the Maya Devi Temple in the Lumbini Sanskritik area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

More than 600 yoga enthusiasts participated in the event, attended by Lumbini Province Governor Krishna Bahadur Gharti Magar.

The Prime Minister also congratulated the people of Kolkata for pursuing the ‘Swachhata Se Swagat’ initiative with dedication.

Referring to this year’s International Day of Yoga theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’, Modi said the ancient practice plays a crucial role in promoting physical health, mental well-being and active ageing, thereby improving the quality of life.

“Yoga is not just physical exercise. It is not restricted to any age group. It is an expression of the human spirit,” he said.

Emphasising the importance of healthy ageing, Mr. Modi said efforts must be made to ensure that advancing age does not reduce human potential.

“When we speak of yoga for healthy ageing, we can work to ensure that age does not reduce human potential,” he said.

“Our target is to be more flexible at 40 than we were at 20. We aim to be more energetic at 50 than we were at 30,” he added.

The Prime Minister also said people should not restrict yoga to only particular occasions, and it must be made part of people’s lives.

Regular yoga practice can address concerns relating to physical and mental well-being, according to Rima Dada, media in-charge and Professor at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Speaking to The Hindu ahead of the International Day of Yoga, being observed on Sunday (June 21, 2026), Dr. Dada drew attention on the significant rise in global elderly population and making healthy ageing an important public health priority.

“While advancements in healthcare have increased life expectancy, many people spend their later years struggling with lifestyle-related diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease.’’

“Yoga is more than a set of physical exercises. It is a complete way of life that promotes healthy habits and mental discipline. Research studies have shown that consistent practice can lower biological ageing markers, improve cellular health, and enhance overall quality of life,’’ she said.

For all ages

Advising people of all ages, especially senior citizens, to incorporate yoga into their daily routine, the physician said that regular practice of yoga postures improves flexibility, balance and neuromuscular coordination, while meditation helps reduce stress and oxidative damage.

Dr. Rima also noted that regular yoga practice can play a vital role in managing Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) by improving hormonal balance, regulating menstrual cycles, supporting healthy weight management and reproductive health.

The theme for the 12th International Day of Yoga is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”

The yoga event will take place on the banks of Srinagar’s Dal Lake.

Srinagar:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the 10th International Yoga Day celebrations this morning from Jammu and Kashmir — an event that has received massive national and global attention in which the location plays no small part.

Here are top 10 points on this big story:

  1. The yoga event took place on the banks of Srinagar’s Dal Lake, at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex. This year’s theme, “Yoga for Self and Society”, emphasises yoga’s vital role in fostering individual well-being and social harmony.

  2. Moderate to heavy rain was reported throughout the Kashmir Valley. Rainfall was also witnessed around Dal Lake. PM Modi did different yoga asanas in an indoor hall along with a reduced number of guests due to the rain in Srinagar.

  3. The 30-minute yoga session was supposed to begin at 7 am but was delayed due to the rain. The event is being attended by, among others, Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha and Ayush Minister Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav.

  4. Over the years, PM Modi has led Yoga Day celebrations at various iconic locations, including Delhi’s Kartavya Path, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi and Jabalpur. Last year, he led the events at the UN Headquarters in New York, which is expected to bring more attention to the Srinagar programme.

  5. Jammu and Kashmir has made headlines lately because of its record turnouts during the recently concluded general election and the terror backlash that followed.  This month, four attacks have taken place in the Jammu region, including the attack on a busful of pilgrims in Reasi district that claimed 10 lives.

  6. Massive security drills have taken place in and around Srinagar. High alert has been declared across the district. The Special Protection Group has conducted mock drills on all the routes leading to the SKICC. The venue of the function – taken over by the SPG two days ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit — has been thoroughly sanitised.

  7. In addition to SPG, Marco commandos of the navy are stationed around the SKICC. Deep combing operations have regularly been taking place at the Dal Lake. The area has been declared a “No-drone zone”.

  8. As a special initiative, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is organising a unique initiative, ‘Yoga for Space’, to mark the International Day of Yoga 2024. All scientists and officials of ISRO will perform Yoga together as per the Common Yoga Protocol guidelines.

  9. The team from the Gaganyaan project is also set to join the global campaign of International Yoga Day by practicing yoga on the occasion.

  10. The Prime Minister, who reached Srinagar today, is on his first visit to the state after being elected for a historic third term. At an event for the young people on Thursday evening at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Complex, he said the assembly polls and statehood for Jammu and Kashmir are “not far off”.

Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India and combines physical postures (called asanas), breathing exercises (pranayamas) and meditation. Known for improving flexibility, strength and balance, it also benefits us mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

As we approach International Yoga Day 2024 on June 21, let’s look back at how this day came to be.

When was the first International Yoga Day celebrated?

The first International Yoga Day was celebrated on June 21, 2015. The idea for International Yoga Day was first proposed on September 27, 2014, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.

He spoke about yoga’s ancient heritage and its potential to foster global health and peace. PM Modi, at the time, stressed that yoga was not just about physical exercise but a way to discover a sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature.

Following this proposal, on December 11, 2014, the United Nations officially proclaimed June 21 as International Yoga Day. This decision was supported by 177 member states.

The theme for International Yoga Day 2024 is “Yoga for Self and Society.”

International Yoga Day: Significance

International Yoga Day aims to raise awareness about the many benefits of practising yoga and to encourage people worldwide to integrate yoga into their daily lives. Since its inception, it has grown into a global event with millions of participants from various cultures and backgrounds, all coming together to celebrate the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of yoga.

On this day, various events such as mass yoga sessions, workshops, and seminars are organized globally, often featuring renowned yoga practitioners.

The day aims to raise global awareness about how yoga improves physical health by improving flexibility, strength and endurance, and helps manage issues like back pain and heart problems.

Beyond physical benefits, yoga supports mental well-being by reducing stress, improving concentration and promoting mental clarity, with breathing exercises and meditation helping to manage anxiety and depression.

Spiritually, yoga fosters inner peace and self-awareness, guiding people toward a deeper connection with themselves.
